The approach called generator coordinate Hartree-Fock (GCHF) method is used in the selection of Gaussian basis set [25s18p for O ((3)p), 31s21p14d for Mn (S-6), and 33s22p16d9f for Pr ((4)J)] for atoms. The role of the weight functions in the assessment of the numerical integration range of the GCHF equations is shown. These basis sets are contracted to (25s18p/9s5p), (31s21p14d/9s6p4d), and (33s22pl6d9f118sl2p5d3f) by segmented contraction scheme of Dunning and they are utilized in calculations of Restricted-Open-HF (ROHF) Total and Orbital energies of the (MnO+1)-Mn-3 and (PrO+1)-Pr-1 fragments, to evaluate their quality in molecular studies. The addition of one d polarization function in the contracted (9s5p) basis set for O(P-3) atom and their application with the contracted (9s6p4d), (18s21p5d3f) basis sets for Mn (S-6) and Pr-Pr ((4)j) atoms lead to the electronic structure study of PrMnO3. The dipole moment, the total energy, and total atomic charges properties were calculated and were carried out at ROHF level with the [PrMnO3](2) fragment. The calculated values show that PrMnO3 does not present piezoelectric properties. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The Generator Coordinate Hartree-Fock (GCHF) method is applied to generate extended (20s14p), (30s19p13d), and (31s23p18d) Gaussian basis sets for the 0, Mn, and La atoms, respectively. The role of the weight functions (WFs) in the assessment of the numerical integration range of the GCHF equations is shown. These basis sets are then contracted to [5s3p] and [11s6p6d] for 0 and Mn atoms, respectively, and [17s11p7d] for La atom by a standard procedure. For quality evaluation of contracted basis sets in molecular calculations, we have accomplished calculations of total and orbital energies in the Hartree-Fock-Roothaan (HFR) method for (MnO1+)-Mn-5 and (LaO1+)-La-1 fragments. The results obtained with the contracted basis sets are compared with values obtained with the extended basis sets. The addition of one d polarization function in the contracted basis set for 0 atom and its utilization with the contracted basis sets for Mn and La atoms leads to the calculations of dipole moment and total atomic charges of perovskite (LaMnO3). The calculations were performed at the HFR level with the crystal [LaMnO3](2) fragment in space group C-2v the values of dipole moment, total energy, and total atomic charges showed that it is reasonable to believe that LaMnO3 presents behaviour of piezoelectric material. Mixed oxide compounds, such as TiO2-SnO2 system are widely used as gas sensors and should also provide varistor properties modifying the TiO2 surface. Therefore, a theoretical investigation has been carried out characterizing the effect of SnO2 on TiO2 addition on the electronic structure by means of ab initio SCF-LCAO calculations using all electrons. In order to take into account the finite size of the cluster, we have used the point charge model for the (TiO2)(15) cluster to study the effect on electronic structure of doping the TiO2 (110) Surface. The contracted basis set for titanium (4322/42/3), oxygen (33/3) and tin (43333/4333/43) atoms were used. The charge distributions, dipole moments, and density of states of doping TiO2 and vacancy formation are reported and analysed. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In a previous report we studied theoretically the piezoelectric effect in barium titanate (BaTiO3) [O. Treu Filho, J.C. Pinheiro, R.T. Kondo, J. Mol. Struct. (THEOCHEM), 671 (2004) 71]. In this article we applied the Hartree-Fock (HF) theory in the investigation of piezoelectricity in LaFeO3. Initially, the generator coordinate HF (GCHF) method was used to build 22s14p, 30s19p13d, and 32s24p17d Gaussian basis sets for O(3p), Fe(D-5), and La(D-2) atoms. Then those basis sets were contracted to [7s6p], [13s8p6d], and [18s13p7d], respectively. The quality of the contracted basis sets in polyatomic calculations was evaluated through calculations of total and orbital energies (HOMO and HOMO-1) of (FeO1+)-Fe-2 and (LaO1+)-La-1. Finally, the contracted basis sets were supplemented with polarization and diffuse functions and used to investigate the piezoelectricity in LaFeO3. The calculated properties were dipole moment, total energy, and atomic charges and the analysis of those properties showed that covalent bonds constitute the electronic structure of [LaFCO3](2) fragment. Therefore, it is reasonable to believe that LaFeO3 does not present piezoelectric properties. (C) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Yttrium-aluminum oxides are interesting compounds and they have been extensively used as host for lasers and phosphors, due to their stable physical and chemical properties. The fabrication of yttrium-aluminum garnet (YAG) has been investigated thoroughly. Single-crystal YAG is expensive and to produce it a new way has been investigated. This process consists of modifying the methodology of reagents mixture and the process of heating them. The microwave irradiation is used to heat-treat the oxide mixture. The traditional synthesis of YAG powders occurs through the reaction of aluminum and yttrium powders at high temperatures. With this work we investigated the preparation of YAG by non-hydrolytic sol-gel route as an alternative methodology to obtain yttrium-aluminum matrix from inorganic precursors (yttrium and aluminum chloride). The preparation of the gel was carried out in an oven-dried glassware. The AlCl3, YCl3 and ethanol were reacted in reflux under argon atmosphere. Europium III chloride was added as a structural probe. The powder was dried and heat-treated in modified microwaves. The samples were pre-treated at 50 and 800 C during I h and then heated in microwaves for 30 s, 2 and 4 min. The formation process and structure of the powders were studied by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), photoluminescence (PL) and transmission electronic microscopy (TEM). XRD presents only picks corresponding to the YAG phase and confirmed by TEM. PL date showed that the YAG phase was formed in 2 min with the samples pre-treated at 50 C. For the samples pretreated at 800 degrees C, the YAG phase appears in 30s. The excitation spectra present a maximum of 394 nm corresponding to the L-5(6) level and emission spectra of Eu III ion present bands characteristic transitions arising from the D-5(0) -> F-7(J) (J= 1, 2, 3, 4) monifolds excited at their maximum. The magnetic dipole D-5(0) -> F-7(1) transition presents more intensity than the electric dipole D-5(0) -> F-7(2) transition. This methodology showed efficiency in obtaining YAG phase. Vitreous samples were prepared in the (100 2 x) NaPO3-x WO3 (0 <= x <= 70) glass forming system using conventional melting-quenching methods. The structural evolution of the vitreous network was monitored as a function of composition by thermal analysis, Raman spectroscopy and high resolution one- and two-dimensional P-31 solid state NMR. Addition of WO3 to the NaPO3 glass melt leads to a pronounced increase in the glass transition temperatures, suggesting a significant increase in network connectivity. At the same time Raman spectra indicate that up to about 30 mol% WO3 the tungsten atoms are linked to some non-bridging oxygen atoms (W-O- or W=O bonded species), suggesting that the network modifier sodium oxide is shared to some extent between both network formers. W-O- W bond formation occurs only at WO3 contents exceeding 30 mol%. P-31 magic angle spinning (MAS)-NMR spectra, supported by two-dimensional J-resolved spectroscopy, allow a clear distinction between species having two, one, and zero P-O-P linkages. The possible formation of some anionic tungsten sites suggested from the Raman data implies an average increase in the degree of polymerization for the phosphorus species, which would result in diminished P-31/Na-23 interactions. This prediction is indeed confirmed by P-31{Na-23} and Na-23{P-31} rotational echo double resonance (REDOR) NMR results, which indicate that successive addition of WO3 to NaPO3 glass significantly diminishes the strength of phosphorus-sodium dipole-dipole couplings.

Temperature and frequency dependence of the F-19 nuclear spin relaxation of the fluoroindate glass, 40InF(3)-20ZnF(2)- 20SrF(2)-2GaF(3)-2NaF-16BaF(2) and the fluorozirconate glass, 50ZrF(4)-20BaF(2)-21LiF-5LaF(3)-4AlF(3); are reported. Measurements were undertaken on pure and Gd3+ doped samples, in the temperature range of 185-1000 K, covering the region below and above the glass transition temperature, T-g. The temperature and frequency dependence of the spin-lattice relaxation rate, T-1(-1), measured in the glassy state at temperature <300 K, is less than the observed dependence at higher temperatures. At temperatures >T-g, the fluorine mobility increases, leading to a more efficient spins lattice relaxation process. Activation energies, for F- motion, are 0.8 eV for the fluoroindate glass and 1 eV for the fluorozirconate glass. The addition of Gd3+ paramagnetic impurities;at 0.1-wt%, does not alter the temperature and frequency dependence of T-1(-1), but increases its magnitude more than one order of magnitude. At temperatures <400 K, the spin-spin relaxation time, T-2(-1), measured for all samples, is determined by the rigid-lattice nuclear dipole-dipole coupling, and it is temperature independent within the accuracy of the measurements. Results obtained for the pure glass, at temperatures >400 K, show that T-2(-1) decreases monotonically as the temperature increases. This decrease is explained as a consequence of the motional narrowing effect caused by the onset of the diffusive motion of the F- ions, with an activation energy around 0.8 eV. For the doped samples, the hyperfine interaction with the paramagnetic impurities is most effective in the relaxation of the nuclear spin, causing an increase in the T(2)(-1)s observed at temperatures >600 K. Monte Carlo simulation results for pure liquid acetone and water-acetone mixtures calculated in the isothermal and isobaric (NPT) ensemble at T=298K and p=1.0atm are presented. The TIP4P model was used for water and optimized potential for liquid simulation (OPLS) force field parameters used for acetone. The results obtained for the average configurational energy as a function of the mole fraction are in good accord with experimental data. Energy partitioning and co-ordination numbers results calculated for equimolar water-acetone solution are compared to similar data obtained for other water-organic liquid mixtures. These results show an increase in water-water interaction energy and co-ordination numbers when the interaction between water and organic liquid molecules decrease. Distribution functions for pure liquid acetone and water-acetone mixtures are presented. Dipole-dipole angular correlation functions obtained for pure liquid acetone show a predominance of dimers with parallel alignment of dipole moments. Radial distribution functions from water-acetone interaction show characteristic features of hydrogen bonded liquids. Radial and angular distribution functions for water-water correlation calculated in pure water and in equimolar water-acetone mixture are compared, showing very similar features in both systems. To gain a fuller understanding of the regions of the Staphylococcus aureus alpha-toxin important in pore formation, we have used Forster dipole-dipole energy transfer to demonstrate that a central glycine-rich region of alpha-toxin (the so-called ''hinge'' region) inserts deeply into the bilayer on association of toxin with liposomes. Mutant alpha-toxins with unique cysteine (C) residues at positions 69 and 130 [Palmer, M., et al. (1993) J. Biol. Chem. 268, 11959) were reacted with the C-specific fluorophore acrylodan, which acted as an energy donor. The chosen acceptor was N-(7-nitrobenz-2-oxa-13-diazol-4-yl)-1,2-bis(hexadecanoyl) -sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine (NBD-PE). Measurement of the degree of donor quenching with increasing NBD-PE in the inner bilayer leaflet enables the distance of closest approach between donor and acceptor to be estimated. For toxin labeled with acrylodan at position 130 (in the hinge region), this distance is approximately 5 +/- 2 Angstrom, showing that the probe is close to the inner surface of the liposomes. A second probe labeled at position 69 (in the N-terminal domain) shows negligible energy transfer, indicating a distance of closest approach >40 Angstrom. This implies that this N-terminal region remains ''outside'' the liposome. We propose a model in which the central region of the alpha-toxin inserts into the membrane and possibly participates in forming the wall of the pore.

The complex analysis of dielectric/capacitance is a very useful approach to separate different polarization contributions existing in polycrystalline ceramics. In this letter, the authors use this type of spectroscopic analysis to separate the bulk's dielectric dipolar relaxation contributions from the polarization contribution due to space charge in the grain boundaries of a CaCu3Ti4O12/CaTiO3 polycrystalline composite system. The bulk dielectric dipolar relaxation was attributed to the self-intertwined domain structures from the CaCu3Ti4O12 phase coupled to the dipole relaxation from the CaTiO3 phase, while the space charge relaxation was attributed to the Schottky-type potential barrier responsible for the highly non-Ohmic properties observed in this composite polycrystalline system.

Vitreous samples were prepared in the (100 - x)% NaPO3-x% MoO3 (0 <= x <= 70) glass-forming system by a modified melt method that allowed good optical quality samples to be obtained. The structural evolution of the vitreous network was monitored as a function of composition by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Raman scattering, and solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) for P-31, Na-23, and Mo-95 nuclei. Addition of MoO3 to the NaPO3 glass melt leads to a pronounced increase in the glass transition temperatures up to x = 45, suggesting a significant increase in network connectivity. For this same composition range, vibrational spectra suggest that the Mo6+ ions are bonded to some nonbridging oxygen atoms (Mo-O- or Mo=O bonded species). Mo-O-Mo bond formation occurs only at MoO3 contents exceeding x = 45. P-31 magic-angle spinning (MAS) NMR spectra, supported by two-dimensional J-resolved spectroscopy, allow a clear distinction between species having two, one, and zero P-O-P linkages. These sites are denoted as Q(2Mo)((2)), Q(1Mo)((2)), and Q(0Mo)((2)), respectively. For x < 0.45, the populations of these sites can be described along the lines of a binary model, according to which each unit of MoO3 converts two Q(nMo)((2)) sites into two Q((n+1)Mo)((2)) sites (n = 0, 1). This structural model is consistent with the presence of tetrahedral Mo(=O)(2)(O-1/2)(2) environments. Indeed, Mo-95 NMR data suggest that the majority of the molybdenum species are four-coordinated. However, the presence of additional six-coordinate molybdenum in the MAS NMR spectra indicates that the structure of these glasses may be more complicated and may additionally involve sharing of network modifier oxide between the network formers phosphorus and molybdenum. This latter hypothesis is further supported by Na-23{P-31} rotational echo double resonance (REDOR) data, which clearly reveal that the magnetic dipole-dipole interactions between P-31 and Na-23 are increasingly diminished with increasing molybdenum content. The partial transfer of modifier from the phosphate to the molybdate network former implies a partial repolymerization of the phosphate species, resulting in the formation of Q(nMo)((3)) species and accounting for the observed increase in the glass transition temperature with increasing MoO3 content that is observed in the composition range 0 <= x <= 45. Glasses with MoO3 contents beyond x = 45 show decreased thermal and crystallization stability. Their structure is characterized by isolated phosphate species [most likely of the P(OMo)(4) type] and molybdenum oxide clusters with a large extent of Mo-O-Mo connectivity.

The generator coordinate Hartree-Fock method was used to develop 20s17p, 30s20p14d, and 30s21p16d Gaussian basis sets for the O ((3)p), Mn (S-6), and Y (D-2) atoms, respectively. The Gaussian basis sets were contracted to 20s17p/9s7p, 30s20p14d/11s7p7d, and 30s21p16d/14s7p7d and utilized in calculations of total energy and orbital energies of the (MnO1+)-Mn-5 and (YO1+)-Y-3 fragments to evaluate its quality in molecular studies. Finally, the contracted basis set for O atom was supplemented with one polarization function of d symmetry and used along with the other contracted basis sets (for Mn and Y) to calculate dipole moments, total energy, and total atomic charges in YMnO3 in space group D-6h. The analysis of those properties showed that is reasonable to believe that YMnO3 present behavior of piezoelectric material. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The mechanical properties of metals with bee structure, such as niobium and their alloys, are changed of a significant way by the introduction of heavy interstitial elements. These interstitial elements (oxygen, for example) present in the metallic matrix occupy octahedral sites and constitute an elastic dipole of tetragonal symmetry and might produce anelastic relaxation. Polycrystalline samples of Nb-0.3 wt.% Ti (Nb-Ti) alloy with oxygen in solid solution were analysed. The anelastic spectroscopy measurements had been made in a torsion pendulum, with frequencies in the Hz range, in a temperature range between 300 and 700 K. The results showed thermally activated relaxation structures were identified four relaxation process attributed to stress-induced ordering of single oxygen, nitrogen and carbon atoms around niobium and stress-induced ordering of single oxygen atoms around titanium atoms.
