Urbanization and the ability to manage for a sustainable future present numerous challenges for geographers and planners in metropolitan regions. Remotely sensed data are inherently suited to provide information on urban land cover characteristics, and their change over time, at various spatial and temporal scales. Data models for establishing the range of urban land cover types and their biophysical composition (vegetation, soil, and impervious surfaces) are integrated to provide a hierarchical approach to classifying land cover within urban environments. These data also provide an essential component for current simulation models of urban growth patterns, as both calibration and validation data. The first stages of the approach have been applied to examine urban growth between 1988 and 1995 for a rapidly developing area in southeast Queensland, Australia. Landsat Thematic Mapper image data provided accurate (83% adjusted overall accuracy) classification of broad land cover types and their change over time. The combination of commonly available remotely sensed data, image processing methods, and emerging urban growth models highlights an important application for current and next generation moderate spatial resolution image data in studies of urban environments.

Background: The physical environment plays an important role in influencing participation in physical activity, although which factors of the physical environment have the greatest effect on patterns of activity remain to be determined. We describe the development of a comprehensive instrument to measure the physical environmental factors that may influence walking and cycling in local neighborhoods and report on its reliability. Methods: Following consultation with experts from a variety of fields and a literature search, we developed a Systematic Pedestrian and Cycling Environmental Scan (SPACES) instrument and used it to collect data over a total of 1987 kilometers of roads in metropolitan Perth, Western Australia. The audit instrument is available from the first author on request. Additional environmental information was collected using desktop methods and geographic information systems (GIS) technology. We assessed inter- and intra-rater reliability of the instrument among the 16 observers who collected the data. Results: The observers reported that the audit instrument was easy to use. Both inter- and intra-rater reliability of the environmental scan instrument were generally high. Conclusions: Our instrument provides a reliable, practical, and easy to-use method for collecting detailed street-level data on physical environmental factors that are potential influences on walking in local neighborhoods.

This paper addresses the investment decisions considering the presence of financial constraints of 373 large Brazilian firms from 1997 to 2004, using panel data. A Bayesian econometric model was used considering ridge regression for multicollinearity problems among the variables in the model. Prior distributions are assumed for the parameters, classifying the model into random or fixed effects. We used a Bayesian approach to estimate the parameters, considering normal and Student t distributions for the error and assumed that the initial values for the lagged dependent variable are not fixed, but generated by a random process. The recursive predictive density criterion was used for model comparisons. Twenty models were tested and the results indicated that multicollinearity does influence the value of the estimated parameters. Controlling for capital intensity, financial constraints are found to be more important for capital-intensive firms, probably due to their lower profitability indexes, higher fixed costs and higher degree of property diversification.

We study the existence of asymptotically almost periodic classical solutions for a class of abstract neutral integro-differential equation with unbounded delay. A concrete application to partial neutral integro-differential equations which arise in the study of heat conduction in fading memory material is considered. (C) 2011 Elsevier Inc. In this paper we study the approximate controllability of control systems with states and controls in Hilbert spaces, and described by a second-order semilinear abstract functional differential equation with infinite delay. Initially we establish a characterization for the approximate controllability of a second-order abstract linear system and, in the last section, we compare the approximate controllability of a semilinear abstract functional system with the approximate controllability of the associated linear system. We discuss the existence of mild, classical and strict solutions for a class of abstract differential equations with nonlocal conditions. Our technical approach allows the study of partial differential equations with nonlocal conditions involving partial derivatives or nonlinear expressions of the solution. Some concrete applications to partial differential equations are considered. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Research documents related to the morphology and function of style branches and stigmatic surface of Asteraceae are still rather few, and the literature reports are thus controversial. We report in the present study that the stigmatic surfaces of two non-related species of Asteraceae (Lessingianthus grandiflorus and Lucilia lycopodioides) have features of semidry stigmas. Sporodermis of both species was also analyzed so that we could understand how the stigmatic surface works during pollen deposition and rehydration. Stylar branches and pollen grains (sporodermis) were studied using scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM) and histochemistry techniques. The inner and marginal bands of stylar branches in these species display intermediary features between the dry and wet types of stigma: the cuticle characterizes the dry stigma and cells with secretory activity characterize the wet stigma; these showed differences from what has been described to the Asteraceae family, where stigmatic surface of species from several tribes is considered dry. Pollen grains are medium-size to large with exine ornamentation (echinate and echinolophate) and abundant secretion which latter characterizes pollenkitt. We can assume that two processes might help pollen grain hydration on stigmatic surface in Lessingianthus grandiflorus and Lucilia lycopodioides: (1) the presence of pollenkitt, as observed in the secretory content inside exine cavities and around pollen grains; and (2) the secretory activity of stigmatic surface cells, whose secretion accumulates among intercellular and subcuticular spaces and leads to cuticle disruption during the floral receptive phase. Our results suggest that ultrastructural and histochemical studies should be considered when describing stigmatic surface and that the ""semidry"" feature within Asteraceae should be investigated still more in detail, so that the taxonomic or adaptation value of this trait in the family can be verified. Purpose: To compare the ability of Subjective assessment of optic nerve head (ONH) and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) by general ophthalmologists and by a glaucoma expert with objective measurements by optical coherence tomography (Stratus OCT, Carl Zeiss Meditec Inc), confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscope (HRT III; Heidelberg Engineering, Heidelberg. Germany), and scanning laser polarimetry (GDx enhanced corneal compensation; Carl Zeiss Meditec Inc, Dublin, CA) in discriminating glaucomatous and normal eyes. Methods: Sixty-one glaucomatous and 57 normal eyes or 118 subjects Were included in the study. Three independent general ophthalmologists and I glaucoma expert evaluated ONH stereo-photographs. Receiver operating characteristic curves were constructed for each imaging technique and sensitivity at fixed specificity was estimated. Comparisons or areas under these curves (aROCs) and agreement (k) were determined between stereophoto grading and best parameter from each technique. Results: Best parameter from each technique showed larger aROC (Stratus OCT RNFL 0.92; Stratus OCT ONH vertical integrated area = 0.86; Stratus OCT macular thickness = 0.82; GDx enhanced corneal compensation = 0.91, HRT3 global cup-to-disc ratio = 0.83; HRT3 glaucoma probability score numeric area score 0.83) compared with stereophotograph grading by general ophthalmologists (0.80) in separating glaucomatous and normal eyes. Glaucoma expert stereophoto grading provided equal or larger aROC (0.92) than best parameter of each computerized imaging device. Stereophoto evaluated by a glaucoma expert showed better agreement with best parameter of each quantitative imaging technique in classifying eyes either as glaucomatous or normal compared with stereophoto grading by general ophthalmologists, The combination Of Subjective assessment of the optic disc by general ophthalmologists with RNFL objective parameters improved identification of glaucoma patients in a larger proportion than the combination of these objective parameters with Subjective assessment of the optic disc by a glaucoma expert (29.5% vs. 19.7%, respectively). Conclusions: Diagnostic ability of all imaging techniques showed better performance than subjective assessment of the ONH by general ophthalmologists, but not by It glaucoma expert, Objective RNFL measurements may provide improvement in glaucoma detection when combined with subjective assessment of the optic disc by general ophthalmologists or by a glaucoma expert.

Lymphangioma is a rare benign tumor characterized by proliferating lymph vessels and composed of large cyst spaces with endothelium-lined channels of varying dimensions. The incidence of lymphangioma is approximately one in 6000 pregnancies. Less than 1 % of lymphangiomas are purely mediastinal. The great majority of cases are of cystic lymphangioma, but very rarely there is a mixed lesion consisting of multiple cysts of dilated capillary and lymph vessels. We report a case of posterior mediastinal lymphangioma diagnosed at 28 weeks` gestation, in which three-dimensional ultrasonography was helpful in determining the precise location of the tumor. A Cesarean section was performed at 39 weeks and the tumor was resected on the 5(th) day postdelivery; histological examination revealed a mixed cystic lymphangioma. Copyright (C) 2008 ISUOG. in humans, adverse pregnancy outcomes (low birth weight, prematurity, and intrauterine growth retardation) are associated with exposure to urban air pollution. Experimental data have also shown that such exposure elicits adverse reproductive outcomes. We hypothesized that the effects of urban air pollution on pregnancy outcomes could be related to changes in functional morphology of the placenta. To test this, future dams were exposed during pregestational and gestational periods to filtered or nonfiltered air in exposure chambers. Placentas were collected from near-term pregnancies and prepared for microscopical examination. Fields of view on vertical uniform random tissue slices were analyzed using stereological methods. Volumes of placental compartments were estimated, and the labyrinth was analyzed further in terms of its maternal vascular spaces, fetal capillaries, trophoblast, and exchange surface areas. From these primary data, secondary quantities were derived: vessel calibers (expressed as diameters), trophoblast thickness (arithmetic mean), and total and mass-specific morphometric diffusive conductances for oxygen of the intervascular barrier. Two-way analysis of variance showed that both periods of exposure led to significantly smaller fetal weights. Pregestational exposure to nonfiltered air led to significant increases in fetal capillary surface area and in total and mass-specific conductances. However, the calibers of maternal blood spaces were reduced. Gestational exposure to nonfiltered air was associated with reduced volumes, calibers, and surface areas of maternal blood spaces and with greater fetal capillary surfaces and diffusive conductances. The findings indicate that urban air pollution affects placental functional morphology. Fetal weights are compromised despite attempts to improve diffusive transport across the placenta.

In this paper we present a new neuroeconomics model for decision-making applied to the Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The model is based on the hypothesis that decision-making is dependent on the evaluation of expected rewards and risks assessed simultaneously in two decision spaces: the personal (PDS) and the interpersonal emotional spaces (IDS). Motivation to act is triggered by necessities identified in PDS or IDS. The adequacy of an action in fulfilling a given necessity is assumed to be dependent on the expected reward and risk evaluated in the decision spaces. Conflict generated by expected reward and risk influences the easiness (cognitive effort) and the future perspective of the decision-making. Finally, the willingness (not) to act is proposed to be a function of the expected reward (or risk), adequacy, easiness and future perspective. The two most frequent clinical forms are ADHD hyperactive (AD/HDhyp) and ADHD inattentive (AD/HDdin). AD/HDhyp behavior is hypothesized to be a consequence of experiencing high rewarding expectancies for short periods of time, low risk evaluation, and short future perspective for decision-making. AD/HDin is hypothesized to be a consequence of experiencing high rewarding expectancies for long periods of time, low risk evaluation, and long future perspective for decision-making.

Background: Many chronic liver diseases lead to progressive hepatic fibrosis, a condition that can ultimately result in loss of organ function and severe portal hypertension necessitating hepatic transplantation. Within the last few decades, studies have been conducted to demonstrate the possibility of drug modulation of hepatic fibrogenesis. Regarding biliary obstruction, it has been suggested that administration of corticosteroids could promote better late outcomes for children with biliary atresia submitted to Kasai`s portoenterostomy. Models used to test potential antifibrogenic drugs such as pentoxifylline (PTX) have not included growing animals. Methods: In this experimental study, 119 young rats (21st or 22nd days) were submitted to laparotomy and common bile duct ligation (CBDL) or to sham surgery (SHAM). Animals were allocated into 5 groups, according to surgical procedure, and administered the following solutions: (1) CBDL + distilled water, (2) SHAM + distilled water, (3) CBDL + PTX, (4) CBDL + prednisolone (PRED), and (5) CBDL + PTX + PRED (PTX + PRED). Each group was further divided into 2 subgroups according to the length of the experiment (15 or 30 days). At the end of the defined period, animals were weighed, and a hepatic fragment was collected from each one for analyses. Results: The PTX animals exhibited increased weight gain compared to animals in the PRED or PTX + PRED groups. Animals from the 3 therapeutic groups (PTX, PRED, and PTX + PRED) showed diminished collagen-filled area in portal spaces. Total portal space area was increased in the PTX group. Conclusions: Hepatic fibrosis induced by bile duct ligation in young rats could be modulated by pharmacologic interventions. Administration of PTX or PRED, or the combination of both, resulted in diminished collagen-filled areas in portal spaces. (C) 2009 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Background and Objectives: Some authors states that the removal of lymph node would only contribute towards assessing the lymph node status and regional disease control, without any benefit for the patients` survival. The aim of this paper was to assess the influence of the number of surgically dissected pelvic lymph nodes (PLN) on disease-free Survival. Methods: Retrospective cohort study on 42 women presenting squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the uterine cervix, with metastases in PLN treated by radical surgery. The Cox model was used to identify risk factors for recurrence. The model variables were adjusted for treatment-related factors (year of treatment, surgical margins and postoperative radiotherapy). The cutoff value for classifying the lymphadenectomy as comprehensive (15 PLN or more) or non-comprehensive (<15 PLN) was determined from analysis of the ROC curve. Results: Fourteen recurrences (32.6%) were recorded: three pelvic, eight distant, two both pelvic and distant, and one at an unknown location. The following risk factors for recurrence were identified: invasion of the deep third of the cervix and number of dissected lymph nodes <15. Conclusions: Deep invasion and non-comprehensive pelvic lymphadenectomy are possible risk factors for recurrence of SCC of the uterine cervix with metastases in PLN. J. Surg. Oncol. 2009;100:252-257.
