There is generally a lack of knowledge on how marine organic carbon accumulation is linked to vertical export and primary productivity patterns. In this study, a multi-proxy geochemical and organic-sedimentological approach is coupled with organic facies modelling focusing on regional calculations of carbon cycling and carbon burial on the western Barents Shelf between northern Scandinavia and Svalbard. OF-Mod 3D, an organic facies modelling software tool, is used to reconstruct the marine and terrestrial organic carbon fractions and to make inferences about marine primary productivity in this region. The model is calibrated with an extensive sample dataset and reproduces the present-day regional distribution of the organic carbon fractions well. Based on this new organic facies model, we present regional carbon mass accumulation rate calculations for the western Barents Sea. The calibration dataset includes location and water depth, sand fraction, organic carbon and nitrogen data and calculated marine and terrestrial organic carbon fractions.

The Labrador Sea is a particularly suitable high-latitude basin for investigating U and Th behavior in deep-sea sediments. During the late Quaternary, the cyclic development and decay of huge ice sheets on adjacent land masses resulted in large-amplitude changes in sedimentation rates and organic paleoproductivities. The resulting magnification of U and Th response is well illustrated by high-resolution studies on piston-cored sediments from the Greenland continental rise at Ocean Drilling Program Leg 105 Site 646 spanning isotopic stages 8 to 1. Our results show a clear positive correlation of 238U/232Th ratios with organic paleoproductivity indicators (e.g., dinocyst) due to U uptake in the water column and/or during the early early diagenesis of organic matter responding to carbon fluxes and to their climate forcing. 230Th excesses over 234U exceed the theoretical value of the 230Th rain from the overlying water column, indicating lateral input possibly from the Greenland slope and shelf. Because these horizontal fluxes of 230Th may be partly controlled by physical parameters, 230Th excesses cannot be unequivocally correlated with sedimentation rates and/or productivity as reported elsewhere. In this subarctic basin characterized by low overall organic carbon burial, the 238U/232Th ratio appears to be a sensible geochemical indicator of organic activity and paleoproductivity.

Stable isotopic analyses of bulk carbonates recovered from Ontong Java Plateau during Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 192 (Holes 1183A and 1186A) show an ~0.5 per mil increase in d18O values from the upper Campanian/lower Maastrichtian to the upper Maastrichtian. This shift is consistent with widespread evidence for cooling at this time. Similar shifts were found at other localities on Ontong Java Plateau (Deep Sea Drilling Project [DSDP] Sites 288 and 289 and ODP Site 807) and at DSDP Site 317 on Manihiki Plateau. These data extend evidence for Maastrichtian cooling into the southwestern tropical and subtropical Pacific. The record of apparent cooling survives despite a significant diagenetic overprint at all sites. Comparing average Maastrichtian d18O values among sites suggests that diagenesis caused d18O to first be shifted toward higher values and then back toward lower values as burial depth increased. Carbon isotopes at the six sites show no apparent primary shifts, but at four sites, the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary interval coincides with a negative excursion attributed to alteration of sediments near the boundary.
