Bismuth germanate films were prepared by dip coating and spin coating techniques and the dependence of the luminescent properties of the samples on the resin viscosity and deposition technique was investigated. The resin used for the preparation of the films was obtained via Pechini method, employing the precursors Bi(2)O(3) and GeO(2). Citric acid and ethylene glycol were used as chelating and cross-linking agents, respectively. Results from X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy indicated that the films sintered at 700 degrees C for 10 h presented the single crystalline phase Bi(4)Ge(3)O(12). SEM images of the films have shown that homogeneous flat films can be produced by the two techniques investigated. All the samples presented the typical Bi(4)Ge(3)O(12) emission band centred at 505 nm. Films with 3.1 mu m average thickness presented 80% of the luminescence intensity registered for the single crystal at the maximum wavelength. Published by Elsevier B.V.

The reaction of dimethylthallium(III) hydroxide with picolinic acid (Hpic), 3-hydroxypicolinic acid (H(2)3hpic) and 6-hydroxypicolinic acid (H(2)6hpic) in an aqueous/methanol mixture afforded the complexes [TlMe(2)(pic)] (1), [TlMe(2)(H3hpic)] (2) and [TlMe(2)(H6hpic)] (3), respectively. Complex 3`, [NaTlMe(2)(6hpic)(2)](n), was obtained as a minor product from a methanolic solution of 3. Compounds 1-3 were characterized by IR and Raman spectroscopy and, in the cases of 1, 2 and Y, by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Complex 3` is the first example of an H6hpic(-) heterobimetallic compound to be isolated. The (1)H and (13)C NMR spectra of 1 and 2 are also discussed. (c) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A very unusual triple structural transition pattern below room temperature was observed for the antifilarial drug diethylcarbamazine citrate. Besides the first thermal, crystallographic, and vibrational investigations of this first-line drug used in clinical treatment for lymphatic filariasis, a noteworthy behavior with three structural transformations as a function of temperature was demonstrated by differential scanning calorimetry, Raman spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray diffractometry. Our X-ray data on single crystals allow for a complete featuring and understanding of all transitions, since the four structures associated with the three solid-solid phase transformations were accurately determined. Two of three structural transitions show an order-disorder mechanism and temperature hysteresis with exothermic peaks at 224 K (T(1)`) and 213 K (T(2)`) upon cooling and endothermic ones at 248 K (T(1)) and 226 K (T(2)) upon heating. The other transition occurs at 108 K (T(3)) and it is temperature-rate sensitive. Molecular displacements onto the (010) plane and conformational changes of the diethylcarbamazine backbone as a consequence of the C-H center dot center dot center dot N hydrogen bonding formation/cleavage between drug molecules explain the mechanism of the transitions at T(1)`/T(2). However, such changes are observed only on alternate columns of the drug intercalated by citrate chains, which leads to a doubling of the lattice period along the a axis of the 235 K structure with respect to the 150 and 293 K structures. At T(2)`/T(1), these structural alterations occur in all columns of the drug. At T(3), there is a rotation on the axis of the N-C bond between the carbamoyl moiety and an ethyl group of one crystallographically independent diethylcarbamazine molecule besides molecular shifts and other conformational alterations. The impact of this study is based on the fascinating finding in which the versatile capability of structural adaptation dependent on the thermal history was observed for a relatively simple organic salt, diethylcarbamazine citrate.

For the first time, crystals of suitable size for X-ray diffractometry structure determination (Dian important anti-HI V drug were prepared under solvothermal conditions. In this study, the crystal structure of didanosine (2`,3`-dideoxyinosine, ddI) in the form of a hydrate was determined using single-crystal X-ray diffractometry. Powder X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the solid-state phase of the drug incorporated into pharmaceutical solid dosage forms is isostructural to the solvothermally prepared ddI material, even though they do not exhibit an identical chemical composition due to different water fractions occupying hydrophobic channels formed within the crystal lattice. Two ddI conformers are present in the structure, in agreement with a previous structure elucidation attempt. Concerning the keto enol equilibrium of ddI, our crystal data and vibrational characterizations by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and FT-Raman spectroscopy techniques were conclusive to state that both conformers exist in the keto form, contrary to solid-state NMR spectroscopic assignments that suggested ddI molecules occur as enol tautomers. In addition, characterizations by thermal (differential scanning calorimetry) and spectroscopic techniques allowed us to understand the structural similarities and the differences related to the hydration pattern of the nonstoichiometric hydrates.

Raman and electronic spectra of the [3,5-bis(dicyanomethylene)cyclopentane-1,2,4-trionate] dianion, the croconate violet (CV), are reported in solutions of ionic liquids based on imidazolium cations. Different normal modes of the CV anion, nu (C=O), nu (CO) + nu (CC) + nu (CCN), and nu(C N), were used as probes of solvation characteristics of ionic liquids, and were compared with spectra of CV in common solvents. The spectra of CV in ionic liquids are similar to those in dichloromethane solution, but distinct from those in protic solvents such as ethanol or water. The UV-vis spectra of CV in ionic liquids strongly suggest pi-pi interactions between the CV anion and the imidazolium cation. Copyright (C) 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Asystematic study on the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) for 3,6-bi-2-pyridyl-1,2,4,5-tetrazine (bptz) adsorbed onto citrate-modified gold nanoparticles (cit-AuNps) was carried out based on electronic and vibrational spectroscopy and density functional methods. The citrate/bptz exchange was carefully controlled by the stepwise addition of bptz to the cit-AuNps, inducing flocculation and leading to the rise of a characteristic plasmon coupling band in the visible region. Such stepwise procedure led to a uniform decrease of the citrate SERS signals and to the rise of characteristic peaks of bptz, consistent with surface binding via the N heterocyclic atoms. In contrast, single addition of a large amount of bptz promoted complete aggregation of the nanoparticles, leading to a strong enhancement of the SERS signals. In this case, from the distinct Raman profiles involved, the formation of a new SERS environment became apparent, conjugating the influence of the local hot spots and charge-transfer (CT) effects. The most strongly enhanced vibrations belong to a(1) and b(2) representations, and were interpreted in terms of the electromagnetic and the CT mechanisms: the latter involving significant contribution of vibronic coupling in the system. Nitrate reduction on palladium multilayers deposited on platinum single crystal electrodes was studied by cyclic voltammetry and FTIR spectroscopy in acid and alkaline media. The results are compared with those obtained with bulk palladium single crystals. The reaction is sensitive to the electrode surface structure, the reactivity depending on the solution pH. In acid solution nitrate was reduced at potentials below the potential of zero total charge (pztc), when the electrode is negatively charged. Competition between nitrate, hydrogen and anion adsorption and NO formation and accumulation at the surface are proposed as the main reasons for the slow reaction rate. On the bulk palladium single crystal electrodes, NO formation leads to a fast blockage of the surface resulting in a very low activity for nitrate reduction. In alkaline solution, nitrate is reduced at more positive potentials with significantly higher current being measured on the Pd multilayer on Pt(100) electrode. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. The time dependence of the concentration of CO2 in an electrochemical thin layer cavity is studied with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) in order to evaluate the extent to which the thin layer cavity is diffusionally decoupled from the surrounding bulk electrolyte. For the model system of CO on Pt(111) in 0.1 M HClO4, it is found that the concentration of CO2, formed by electro-oxidation of CO, equilibrates rapidly with the surrounding bulk electrolyte. This rapid equilibration indicates that there is diffusion out of the thin layer, even on the short time scales of typical infrared experiments (1-3 min). However, since the measured CO2 absorbance intensity as a function of time is reproducible to within 10%, a new time-dependent method for surface coverage calibration using solution-phase species is proposed.

Thin films were prepared using glass precursors obtained in the ternary system NaPO(3)-BaF(2)-WO(3) and the binary system NaPO(3)-WO(3) with high concentrations of WO(3) (above 40% molar). Vitreous samples have been used as a target to prepare thin films. Such films were deposited using the electron beam evaporation method onto soda-lime glass substrates. Several structural characterizations were performed by Raman spectroscopy and X-ray Absorption Near Edge Spectroscopy (XANES) at the tungsten L(I) and L(III) absorption edges. XANES investigations showed that tungsten atoms are only sixfold coordinated (octahedral WO(6)) and that these films are free of tungstate tetrahedral units (WO(4)). In addition, Raman spectroscopy allowed identifying a break in the linear phosphate chains as the amount of WO(3) increases and the formation of P-O-W bonds in the films network indicating the intermediary behavior of WO(6) octahedra in the film network. Based on XANES data, we suggested a new attribution of several Raman absorption bands which allowed identifying the presence of W-O and W=O terminal bonds and a progressive apparition of W-O-W bridging bonds for the most WO(3) concentrated samples (above 40% molar) attributed to the formation of WO(6) clusters. The compounds [Cu(N-3)(NSC)(tmen)](n) (1), [Cu(N-3)(NCO)(tmen)](n) (2) and [Cu(N-3)(NCO)(tmen)](2) (3) (tmen = N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine) were synthesized and studied by i.r. spectroscopy. Single crystals of compounds (1) and (3) were obtained and characterized by X-ray diffraction. The structure of compound (1) consists of neutral chains of copper(II) ions bridged by a single azido ligand showing the asymmetric end-to-end coordination fashion. Each copper ion is also surrounded by the other three nitrogen atoms: two from one N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine and one from a terminal bonded thiocyanate group. Compound (2) decomposes slowly in acetone and the product formed [Cu(N-3)(NCO)(tmen)](2) (3) crystallizes in the monoclinic system (P2(1)). The structure of (3) consists of dimeric units in which the Cu atoms are penta-coordinated and connected by p(1,3) bridging azido and cyanate ligands. In both cases the five coordinated atoms give rise to a slightly distorted square-based pyramid coordination geometry at each copper ion. The thermal behavior of [Cu(N-3)(NSC)(tmen)](n) (1) and [Cu(N-3)(NCO)(tmen)](n) (2) were investigated and the final decomposition products were identified by X-ray powder diagrams.

Transparent glasses were synthesized in the NaPO3-BaF2 WO3 tertiary system and several structural characterizations were performed by X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XANES) at the tungsten L-I and L-III absorption edges and by Raman spectroscopy. The electrodeposition of manganese oxide films onto a platinum substrate was investigated by means of in situ ellipsometry. In the thickness range from 0 to 150 nm, the anodic oxide behaves as an Isotropic single layer with optical constants that are independent of thickness. Deviations at higher thickness are explained in terms of anisotropic properties of the film. The electroreduction of thin films (up to ca. 150 nm) in an alkaline electrolyte leads to a decrease in both the refractive index and the extinction coefficient and is accompanied by a thickness increase of ca. 10%. The Mn(IV) to Mn(III) conversion takes place from the oxide/electrolyte interface inwards. © 2004 The Electrochemical Society. All rights reserved.
