Respiratory bacterial pathogens in pigs are currently treated with antibiotics. Intervet - Schering Plough markets an antibiotic called Nurflor (Florfenicol) targeting respiratory pathogens. This project tests the effectiveness of this antibiotic against a series of respiratory pathogens. 6 isolates will be tested per serovar/strain and the isolates will be from 4 different farms using MIC testing. The sensitivity of Florfenicol will be compared to sensitivity of the organisms to Tilmicosin and Amoxicillin. Development of resistance to certain antibiotics have been reported, so it is important to have alternative antibiotics available to treat the respiratory pathogens on farms.

The aim of the project is to prove that live vaccination on the farm will protect the piglets from heterologous challenge with H. parasuis. The steps to achieve the aim of the project are to find a dose rate on the farm which guarantees colonisation of the vaccine strain and is safe On farm vaccinated and unvaccinated pigs are then shifted to CAAS at three weeks of age and challenged with a heterologous strains. The method is then applied on a large piggery for a period of nearly 12 months. We will also develop a freeze drying method and a technical manual of procedures to identify serovars prevailing on pig farms and which serovar to include into the vaccine.

Manure management emissions may present much greater opportunity for greenhouse gas mitigation in the feedlot, pig, chicken meat, egg and diary industries, than the current IPCC and DCC calculation guidelines suggest. Current literature and understanding of manure mass loss throughout the manure management system does not support these current guidelines; in which the emission rates are fixed and consequently don't allow incentives for reduced emissions.

There is a need to have infertile male cattle in the Australian beef herd. There is, currently, no non-invasive alternative to the castration of cattle, nor is there likely to be one in the near future. There is ample scientific evidence demonstrating that castration causes stress and pain, and with the community increasingly scrutinising farming practices and seeking assurance that they are humane, there is a clear need to develop practical strategies for minimising the pain and stress associated with castration.

Fowl cholera, caused by P. multocida, is a serious disease of poultry with sudden surges in mortality and an emerging disease of the free ranged poultry industries. This project will develop a more rapid and cost effective screening method for P. multocida. The impacts of this new method are manifold: It will lead to an improved understanding of the epidemiology of fowl cholera and the possible sources of entry onto the farm leading to improved biosecurity measures and control programs. Another impact is improved serotyping, which will ensure more effective and targeted vaccination programs. Improving prevention and control programs and decreasing the reliance on antibiotics will enhance the sustainability and profitability of the industry.

Enteric fermentation of methane by ruminant animals represents a major source of anthropogenic methane production. Methane produced in this manner is released to the atmosphere where it is highly efficient at absorbing thermal radiation, which consequently increases the global surface temperature. Although many different strategies to control ruminant methane emissions have been considered, few are currently considered viable. Obligate and acultative methane oxidising bacteria (MOB) and anaerobic methane oxidising archaea (ANME) play a fundamental role in the carbon cycle by metabolising methane before it is released into the atmosphere. Because of this, methanotrophic microorganisms represent a novel biological control agent in mitigating ruminant methane emissions. This project aims to characterise methanotrophic microorganisms from a range of environments, and to subsequently determine the metabolic activity of these microorganisms under in vitro rumen-like conditions.

This project will identify and evaluate grazing management and related practices for beef enterprises in northern Australia that will assist them to build resilience and adapt to a changing and more variable climate. With input from scientists and experienced producers, the trade-offs or synergies between production, sustainability and profitability indicators associated with different management practices will be evaluated in the target regions, using a bio-economic modelling framework. The latter will account for region-specific, climate-change outlooks.

This scoping study will quantitatively evaluate options for the Australian prawn farming industry to meet all or part of its energy needs using renewable technology. Modelling will be used to assess the optimal renewable energy investment strategy for the industry that can be adopted on a farm by farm basis.
