This paper proposes a novel high capacity robust audio watermarking algorithm by using the high frequency band of the wavelet decomposition at which the human auditory system (HAS) is not very sensitive to alteration. The main idea is to divide the high frequency band into frames and, for embedding, to change the wavelet samples depending on the average of relevant frame¿s samples. The experimental results show that the method has a very high capacity (about 11,000 bps), without significant perceptual distortion (ODG in [¿1 ,0] and SNR about 30dB), and provides robustness against common audio signal processing such as additive noise, filtering, echo and MPEG compression (MP3).

The objective of this work was to evaluate the ideal feeding rate and frequency for juvenile pompano (Trachinotus marginatus). Two experiments were carried out in a completely randomized design, with three replicates each. In experiment I, 25 fish (4.8±0.6 g and 6.48±0.01 cm) were stocked in 15 tanks (50 L) during 21 days and fed 4, 8, 12, 16, and 20% body weight per day. In experiment II, 20 fish (4.1±0.1 g and 6.6±0.1 cm) were stocked in 15 tanks (40 L) during 28 days and fed 2, 6, 8, and 10 times a day. The tested feeding rates and frequencies did not influence survival. Final weight and length in experiment I were significantly lower in fish fed 4% body weight per day, whereas in experiment II only weight was significantly lower in fish fed 2 and 6 times a day. At the end of both experiments, apparent feed conversion showed significant difference, with the worst value observed for fish fed 20% body weight per day in experiment I and 2 times a day in experiment II. Juvenile pompano show better growth performance when fed 8% body weight per day and 8 times a day.

The integration of electric motors and industrial appliances such as pumps, fans, and compressors is rapidly increasing. For instance, the integration of an electric motor and a centrifugal pump provides cost savings and improved performance characteristics. Material cost savings are achieved when an electric motor is integrated into the shaft of a centrifugal pump, and the motor utilizes the bearings of the pump. This arrangement leads to a smaller configuration that occupies less floor space. The performance characteristics of a pump drive can be improved by using the variable-speed technology. This enables the full speed control of the drive and the absence of a mechanical gearbox and couplers. When using rotational speeds higher than those that can be directly achieved by the network frequency the structure of the rotor has to be mechanically durable. In this thesis the performance characteristics of an axial-flux solid-rotor-core induction motor are determined. The motor studied is a one-rotor-one-stator axial-flux induction motor, and thus, there is only one air-gap between the rotor and the stator. The motor was designed for higher rotational speeds, and therefore a good mechanical strength of the solid-rotor-core rotor is required to withstand the mechanical stresses. The construction of the rotor and the high rotational speeds together produce a feature, which is not typical of traditional induction motors: the dominating loss component of the motor is the rotor eddy current loss. In the case of a typical industrial induction motor instead the dominating loss component is the stator copper loss. In this thesis, several methods to decrease the rotor eddy current losses in the case of axial-flux induction motors are presented. A prototype motor with 45 kW output power at 6000 min-1 was designed and constructed for ascertaining the results obtained from the numerical FEM calculations. In general, this thesis concentrates on the methods for improving the electromagnetic properties of an axial-flux solid-rotor-core induction motor and examines the methods for decreasing the harmonic eddy currents of the rotor. The target is to improve the efficiency of the motor and to reach the efficiency standard of the present-day industrial induction motors equipped with laminated rotors.

This correspondence studies the formulation of members ofthe Cohen-Posch class of positive time-frequency energy distributions.Minimization of cross-entropy measures with respect to different priorsand the case of no prior or maximum entropy were considered. It isconcluded that, in general, the information provided by the classicalmarginal constraints is very limited, and thus, the final distributionheavily depends on the prior distribution. To overcome this limitation,joint time and frequency marginals are derived based on a "directioninvariance" criterion on the time-frequency plane that are directly relatedto the fractional Fourier transform.

In this master's thesis a mechanical model that is driven with variable speed synchronous machine was developed. The developed mechanical model simulates the mechanics of power transmission and its torsional vibrations. The mechanical model was developed for the need of the branched mechanics of a rolling mill and the propulsion system of a tanker. First, the scope of the thesis was to clarify the concepts connected to the mechanical model. The clarified concepts are the variable speed drive, the mechanics of power transmission and the vibrationsin the power transmission. Next, the mechanical model with straight shaft line and twelve moments of inertia that existed in the beginning was developed to be branched considering the case of parallel machines and the case of parallel rolls. Additionally, the model was expanded for the need of moreaccurate simulation to up to thirty moments of inertia. The model was also enhanced to enable three phase short circuit situation of the simulated machine. After that the mechanical model was validated by comparing the results of the developed simulation tool to results of other simulation tools. The compared results are the natural frequencies and mode shapes of torsional vibration, the response of the load torque step and the stress in the mechanical system occurred by the permutation of the magnetic field that is arisen from the three phase short circuit situation. The comparisons were accomplished well and the mechanical model was validated for the compared cases. Further development to be made is to develop the load torque to be time-dependent and to install two frequency converters and two FEM modeled machines to be simulated parallel.

Hitsattujen rakenteiden väsymiskestävyyttä pystytään parantamaan jälkikäsittelymenetelmillä, joistayksi, ultraäänikäsittely muokkaa hitsin geometriaa ja aiheuttaa puristusjäännösjännitystilan. Tässä tutkimuksessa verrataan kokeellisesti kuormaa kantamattoman hitsatun ja ui -käsitellyn rivan väsymislujuutta toisiinsa. Tutkimusohjelmaan kuuluu kahta teräslajia ja sekä vakio - että vaihtuva - amplitudista kuormitusta. Ultraäänikäsittelyllä saavutetaan väsymiskestoiän parantuminen vakio - ja vaihtuva - amplitudisella kuormituksella. Perusaineen lujuudella ei ole merkittää vaikutusta väsymislujuuteen kun liitos on hitsatussa tilassa. Tällöin väsymiskestävyyden määrää hitsin rajaviivan jännityskeskittymä. Ultraäänikäsitellyn hitsatunliitoksen väsymiskestävyys on suurempi korkeamman lujuuden omaavilla teräksillä. Tästä syystä korkealujuuksisten terästen käyttö ultraäänikäsiteltynä väsyttävästi kuormitetuissa kevytrakenteissa on perusteltua.

In peripheral tissues circadian gene expression can be driven either by local oscillators or by cyclic systemic cues controlled by the master clock in the brain's suprachiasmatic nucleus. In the latter case, systemic signals can activate immediate early transcription factors (IETFs) and thereby control rhythmic transcription. In order to identify IETFs induced by diurnal blood-borne signals, we developed an unbiased experimental strategy, dubbed Synthetic TAndem Repeat PROMoter (STAR-PROM) screening. This technique relies on the observation that most transcription factor binding sites exist at a relatively high frequency in random DNA sequences. Using STAR-PROM we identified serum response factor (SRF) as an IETF responding to oscillating signaling proteins present in human and rodent sera. Our data suggest that in mouse liver SRF is regulated via dramatic diurnal changes of actin dynamics, leading to the rhythmic translocation of the SRF coactivator Myocardin-related transcription factor-B (MRTF-B) into the nucleus.

We present a new global method for the identification of hotspots in conservation and ecology. The method is based on the identification of spatial structure properties through cumulative relative frequency distributions curves, and is tested with two case studies, the identification of fish density hotspots and terrestrial vertebrate species diversity hotspots. Results from the frequency distribution method are compared with those from standard techniques among local, partially local and global methods. Our approach offers the main advantage to be independent from the selection of any threshold, neighborhood, or other parameter that affect most of the currently available methods for hotspot analysis. The two case studies show how such elements of arbitrariness of the traditional methods influence both size and location of the identified hotspots, and how this new global method can be used for a more objective selection of hotspots.

Left rostral dorsal premotor cortex (rPMd) and supramarginal gyrus (SMG) have been implicated in the dynamic control of actions. In 12 right-handed healthy individuals, we applied 30 min of low-frequency (1 Hz) repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) over left rPMd to investigate the involvement of left rPMd and SMG in the rapid adjustment of actions guided by visuospatial cues. After rTMS, subjects underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging while making spatially congruent button presses with the right or left index finger in response to a left- or right-sided target. Subjects were asked to covertly prepare motor responses as indicated by a directional cue presented 1 s before the target. On 20% of trials, the cue was invalid, requiring subjects to readjust their motor plan according to the target location. Compared with sham rTMS, real rTMS increased the number of correct responses in invalidly cued trials. After real rTMS, task-related activity of the stimulated left rPMd showed increased task-related coupling with activity in ipsilateral SMG and the adjacent anterior intraparietal area (AIP). Individuals who showed a stronger increase in left-hemispheric premotor-parietal connectivity also made fewer errors on invalidly cued trials after rTMS. The results suggest that rTMS over left rPMd improved the ability to dynamically adjust visuospatial response mapping by strengthening left-hemispheric connectivity between rPMd and the SMG-AIP region. These results support the notion that left rPMd and SMG-AIP contribute toward dynamic control of actions and demonstrate that low-frequency rTMS can enhance functional coupling between task-relevant brain regions and improve some aspects of motor performance.

La collaboration CLIC (Compact LInear Collider, collisionneur linéaire compact) étudie la possibilité de réaliser un collisionneur électron-positon linéaire à haute énergie (3 TeV dans le centre de masse) et haute luminosité (1034 cm-2s-1), pour la recherche en physique des particules. Le projet CLIC se fonde sur l'utilisation de cavités accélératrices à haute fréquence (30 GHz). La puissance nécessaire à ces cavités est fournie par un faisceau d'électrons de basse énergie et de haute intensité, appelé faisceau de puissance, circulant parallèlement à l'accélérateur linéaire principal (procédé appelé « Accélération à Double Faisceau »). Dans ce schéma, un des principaux défis est la réalisation du faisceau de puissance, qui est d'abord généré dans un complexe accélérateur à basse fréquence, puis transformé pour obtenir une structure temporelle à haute fréquence nécessaire à l'alimentation des cavités accélératrices de l'accélérateur linéaire principal. La structure temporelle à haute fréquence des paquets d'électrons est obtenue par le procédé de multiplication de fréquence, dont la manipulation principale consiste à faire circuler le faisceau d'électrons dans un anneau isochrone en utilisant des déflecteurs radio-fréquence (déflecteurs RF) pour injecter et combiner les paquets d'électrons. Cependant, ce type de manipulation n'a jamais été réalisé auparavant et la première phase de la troisième installation de test pour CLIC (CLIC Test Facility 3 ou CTF3) a pour but la démonstration à faible charge du procédé de multiplication de fréquence par injection RF dans un anneau isochrone. Cette expérience, qui a été réalisée avec succès au CERN au cours de l'année 2002 en utilisant une version modifiée du pré-injecteur du grand collisionneur électron-positon LEP (Large Electron Positron), est le sujet central de ce rapport. L'expérience de combinaison des paquets d'électrons consiste à accélérer cinq impulsions dont les paquets d'électrons sont espacés de 10 cm, puis à les combiner dans un anneau isochrone pour obtenir une seule impulsion dont les paquets d'électrons sont espacés de 2 cm, multipliant ainsi la fréquence des paquets d'électrons, ainsi que la charge par impulsion, par cinq. Cette combinaison est réalisée au moyen de structures RF résonnantes sur un mode déflecteur, qui créent dans l'anneau une déformation locale et dépendante du temps de l'orbite du faisceau. Ce mécanisme impose plusieurs contraintes de dynamique de faisceau comme l'isochronicité, ainsi que des tolérances spécifiques sur les paquets d'électrons, qui sont définies dans ce rapport. Les études pour la conception de la Phase Préliminaire du CTF3 sont détaillées, en particulier le nouveau procédé d'injection avec les déflecteurs RF. Les tests de haute puissance réalisés sur ces cavités déflectrices avant leur installation dans l'anneau sont également décrits. L'activité de mise en fonctionnement de l'expérience est présentée en comparant les mesures faites avec le faisceau aux simulations et calculs théoriques. Finalement, les expériences de multiplication de fréquence des paquets d'électrons sont décrites et analysées. On montre qu'une très bonne efficacité de combinaison est possible après optimisation des paramètres de l'injection et des déflecteurs RF. En plus de l'expérience acquise sur l'utilisation de ces déflecteurs, des conclusions importantes pour les futures activités CTF3 et CLIC sont tirées de cette première démonstration de la multiplication de fréquence des paquets d'électrons par injection RF dans un anneau isochrone.<br/><br/>The Compact LInear Collider (CLIC) collaboration studies the possibility of building a multi-TeV (3 TeV centre-of-mass), high-luminosity (1034 cm-2s-1) electron-positron collider for particle physics. The CLIC scheme is based on high-frequency (30 GHz) linear accelerators powered by a low-energy, high-intensity drive beam running parallel to the main linear accelerators (Two-Beam Acceleration concept). One of the main challenges to realize this scheme is to generate the drive beam in a low-frequency accelerator and to achieve the required high-frequency bunch structure needed for the final acceleration. In order to provide bunch frequency multiplication, the main manipulation consists in sending the beam through an isochronous combiner ring using radio-frequency (RF) deflectors to inject and combine electron bunches. However, such a scheme has never been used before, and the first stage of the CLIC Test Facility 3 (CTF3) project aims at a low-charge demonstration of the bunch frequency multiplication by RF injection into an isochronous ring. This proof-of-principle experiment, which was successfully performed at CERN in 2002 using a modified version of the LEP (Large Electron Positron) pre-injector complex, is the central subject of this report. The bunch combination experiment consists in accelerating in a linear accelerator five pulses in which the electron bunches are spaced by 10 cm, and combining them in an isochronous ring to obtain one pulse in which the electron bunches are spaced by 2 cm, thus achieving a bunch frequency multiplication of a factor five, and increasing the charge per pulse by a factor five. The combination is done by means of RF deflecting cavities that create a time-dependent bump inside the ring, thus allowing the interleaving of the bunches of the five pulses. This process imposes several beam dynamics constraints, such as isochronicity, and specific tolerances on the electron bunches that are defined in this report. The design studies of the CTF3 Preliminary Phase are detailed, with emphasis on the novel injection process using RF deflectors. The high power tests performed on the RF deflectors prior to their installation in the ring are also reported. The commissioning activity is presented by comparing beam measurements to model simulations and theoretical expectations. Eventually, the bunch frequency multiplication experiments are described and analysed. It is shown that the process of bunch frequency multiplication is feasible with a very good efficiency after a careful optimisation of the injection and RF deflector parameters. In addition to the experience acquired in the operation of these RF deflectors, important conclusions for future CTF3 and CLIC activities are drawn from this first demonstration of the bunch frequency multiplication by RF injection into an isochronous ring.<br/><br/>La collaboration CLIC (Compact LInear Collider, collisionneur linéaire compact) étudie la possibilité de réaliser un collisionneur électron-positon linéaire à haute énergie (3 TeV) pour la recherche en physique des particules. Design aspects of the Transversally Laminated Anisotropic (TLA) Synchronous Reluctance Motor (SynRM) are studied and the machine performance analysis compared to the Induction Motor (IM) is done. The SynRM rotor structure is designed and manufactured for a30 kW, four-pole, three-phase squirrel cage induction motor stator. Both the IMand SynRM were supplied by a sensorless Direct Torque Controlled (DTC) variablespeed drive. Attention is also paid to the estimation of the power range where the SynRM may compete successfully with a same size induction motor. A technicalloss reduction comparison between the IM and SynRM in variable speed drives is done. The Finite Element Method (FEM) is used to analyse the number, location and width of flux barriers used in a multiple segment rotor. It is sought for a high saliency ratio and a high torque of the motor. It is given a comparison between different FEM calculations to analyse SynRM performance. The possibility to take into account the effect of iron losses with FEM is studied. Comparison between the calculated and measured values shows that the design methods are reliable. A new application of the IEEE 112 measurement method is developed and used especially for determination of stray load losses in laboratory measurements. The study shows that, with some special measures, the efficiency of the TLA SynRM is equivalent to that of a high efficiency IM. The power factor of the SynRM at rated load is smaller than that of the IM. However, at lower partial load this difference decreases and this, probably, brings that the SynRM gets a better power factor in comparison with the IM. The big rotor inductance ratio of the SynRM allows a good estimating of the rotor position. This appears to be very advantageous for the designing of the rotor position sensor-less motor drive. In using the FEM designed multi-layer transversally laminated rotor with damper windings it is possible to design a directly network driven motor without degrading the motorefficiency or power factor compared to the performance of the IM.

Electric motors driven by adjustable-frequency converters may produce periodic excitation forces that can cause torque and speed ripple. Interaction with the driven mechanical system may cause undesirable vibrations that affect the system performance and lifetime. Direct drives in sensitive applications, such as elevators or paper machines, emphasize the importance of smooth torque production. This thesis analyses the non-idealities of frequencyconverters that produce speed and torque ripple in electric drives. The origin of low order harmonics in speed and torque is examined. It is shown how different current measurement error types affect the torque. As the application environment, direct torque control (DTC) method is applied to permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSM). A simulation model to analyse the effect of the frequency converter non-idealities on the performance of the electric drives is created. Themodel enables to identify potential problems causing torque vibrations and possibly damaging oscillations in electrically driven machine systems. The model is capable of coupling with separate simulation software of complex mechanical loads. Furthermore, the simulation model of the frequency converter's control algorithm can be applied to control a real frequency converter. A commercial frequencyconverter with standard software, a permanent magnet axial flux synchronous motor and a DC motor as the load are used to detect the effect of current measurement errors on load torque. A method to reduce the speed and torque ripple by compensating the current measurement errors is introduced. The method is based on analysing the amplitude of a selected harmonic component of speed as a function oftime and selecting a suitable compensation alternative for the current error. The speed can be either measured or estimated, so the compensation method is applicable also for speed sensorless drives. The proposed compensation method is tested with a laboratory drive, which consists of commercial frequency converter hardware with self-made software and a prototype PMSM. The speed and torque rippleof the test drive are reduced by applying the compensation method. In addition to the direct torque controlled PMSM drives, the compensation method can also beapplied to other motor types and control methods.

Bien que présenté comme un modèle de stabilité, le fédéralisme est constamment remis en question. Le but de l'article est de présenter quelques-unes de ses caractéristiques lues à travers les effectifs de la fonction publique en Suisse. Pour ce faire, nous distinguerons quatre types d'employeurs : Confédération, cantons, communes et corporations de droit public, lesquels représentent 10,5 % du total des actifs en Suisse. Nous analyserons la densité administrative, la variation des emplois et le degré de décentralisation selon la culture, le territoire et la religion. Il ressort que la fonction publique intermédiaire, c'est-à-dire les cantons, joue le premier rôle avec ses 140'000 emplois en équivalents plein temps (EPT) sur un total de 328'000, en hausse de 10,3 % par rapport à 2001. Les communes comptent 38 % des agents publics (+3,6 % par rapport à 2001), loin devant la Confédération, 11 % du total (en perte de vitesse : -1,2 %) et les corporations de droit public, 9 % du total (+14,5 %). Le taux d'administration est plus élevé dans la partie francophone que dans la partie germanophone, ainsi que dans les centres économiques et les zones frontières. Les écarts entre les cantons peuvent varier du simple au triple. En fait, deux modèles politico-administratifs transparaissent : le premier « cantonaliste » et davantage étatiste dans la partie latine, l'autre « communaliste » et décentralisé, dominant dans la partie germanophone. Le quotient de décentralisation administrative montre de grandes différences entre l'est et l'ouest, qui s'estompent toutefois avec la modernisation des institutions et le repositionnement de la Suisse face à l'Europe.
