The use of a number of perovskite phases M MO3-x, as the only forming additive in ZnO ceramics, produces a high nonlinearity index, ?(up to 45), where M is a multivalent transition?metal ion and M is an alkaline earth or a rare?earth ion. From this study, the formation parameters crucial to high nonlinearity, such as nonstoichiometry in the as?received ZnO powder, low x values of the additives and fast cooling rate after the sintering, are explainable on the basis of a depletion layer formation at the presintering stage. This is because of the surface states arising out of the chemisorbed oxygen. The depletion layer is retained during sintering as a result of the higher valence state of M ions, preferentially present at the grain?boundary regions. The fast cooling freezes in the high?temperature concentration of donor?type defects, thereby decreasing the depletion layer width.

In the Tl1-yPbyCaSr2Cu2O7 system, monophasic superconducting compositions are formed in the range 0.25 < y < 0.60 and the minimum Pb content required to stabilize the tetragonal 1122 phase is about 25%. Maximum Tc is found when y = 0.5, at which composition the hole concentration is optimal. Metallic compositions of Tl1?yPbyCaSr2Cu2O7 (y = 0.25) and Tl0.75Pb0.25Y1?xCaxSr2Cu2O7 (0.80 less-than-or-equals, slant X less-than-or-equals, slant 1.0) become superconducting on decreasing the oxygen content by vacuum annealing.

Nanosized powders of TiO2 (anatase) were prepared by the hydrothermal method, acid-medium hydrolysis or by vacuum freeze-drying of sols, and annealing at temperatures <700-degrees-C. Photocatalytic activities of these powders in the mineralization of phenol, were evaluated in comparison to that of Degussa P25. Kinetic data indicated that surface hydroxylation had a retarding effect on the degradation of phenol. Formation of stable peroxotitanium species were observed on hydroxylated powders, whereas only V(Ti)-O- hole trap centres were detected by EPR on the heat treated samples. The data supports direct hole oxidation of the substrate preadsorbed on the photocatalyst, which is otherwise blocked by surface hydroxyls.

A solid-state miscibility gap in the pseudo-binary system BaO-SrO is delineated by X-ray diffraction studies on samples equilibrated either in vacuum or under flowing inert gas at temperatures between 1073 and 1423 K. For the SrxBa1-xO solid solution an asymmetric phase boundary, characterized by a critical temperature of 1356 (+/-4) K and composition x=0.55 (+/-0.008), is obtained. Thermodynamic mixing properties of the solid solution, derived from the experimental phase boundary compositions and temperatures, can be represented by the expression: Delta G(E)=x(1-x){33 390-7.09T)x+(29 340-6.23T)(1-x)} J mol(-1)It is necessary to include excess entropy terms to obtain a good fit to the experimental data. The chemical spinodal curve is computed from the thermodynamic parameters

The dependence of optical constants, structure and composition of titania thin films on the process parameters has been investigated. Films were deposited using both reactive electron beam evaporation and ion Assisted Deposition(IAD). If has been observed that the refractive index of IAD films is higher than that for the reactively deposited films, without much difference in the extinction coefficient. Electron paramagnetic resonance has been used to estimate qualitatively the presence of non-stoichiometry in the films. It has been found that these spectra correlate very well the optical behaviour of the films. X-ray diffraction studies revealed that the neutral oxygen deposited films were stress free, while the IAD films showed tensile stress. The lattice parameters showed anisotropic change with ion beam parameters.

The review is concerned with models that analyze transport:processes that occur during microwave heating. Early models on microwave. heating used Lambert's law to describe the microwave power absorption. Over the last decade, models for transport processes have been developed with the microwave power derived from Maxwell's equations. Those models, primarily based on plane waves, have been used for analyzing microwave heating of solids, liquids, emulsions, microwave thawing and drying. The models illustrate phenomena such a resonances, hot spots, edge and runaway heating. The literature on microwave sintering, susceptor heating and microwave assisted synthesis is largely experimental in nature and only key issues are highlighted. To fully appreciate the models for microwave heating, a section on the theory of electromagnetic wave propagation is included, where expressions for the electric field in dielectric slabs and cylinders are presented.

The effects of 100 MeV Oxygen and 200 MeV Silver ions on the structural and transport properties of YBCO thin films are reported. Both normal state and superconducting properties were studied on Laser ablated and high pressure oxygen sputtered films. Precise electrical resistance and critical current measurements near T-c were made and the data obtained were analysed in the light of existing models of para-coherence near T-c and the other aspects of radiation damage arising from microstructural studies such as atomic force microscopy (AFM). There was evidence of sputtering by high energy ions from AFM measurement. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

The effect of aluminosilicate (Al2SiO5) on the upturn characteristics of ZnO varistor ceramics has been investigated. Addition of Al2SiO5 shifts the point of upturn above 10(4) A cm(-2). The extended nonlinearity in the high current density region is better correlatable to the presence of higher density of trap stales and changing pattern of trap depths at the grain boundary interface as much as the grain interior conductivity. Microstructure studies show the formation and involvement of a liquid phase during sintering. The secondary phases, predominantly are antimony spinel, Zn7Sb2O12, zinc silicate, Zn2SiO4 and magnesium aluminium silicate. MgAl2Si3O10. Energy dispersive X-ray analyses (EDAX) show that Al and Si are distributed more in the grain boundaries and within the secondary phases than in the grain interiors. Capacitance-voltage analyses and dielectric dispersion studies indicate the presence of negative capacitance and associated resonance, indicative of the oscillatory charge redistribution involving increased trapping at the interface states. The admittance spectroscopy data show that the type of trap slates remains unaltered whereas the addition of Al2SiO5 increases the density of low energy traps. Sintering, electrical conductivity and thermal expansion behaviour of combustion synthesised strontium substituted rare earth manganites with the general formula Ln(1-x)Sr(x)MnO(3) (Ln = Pr, Nd and Sm; x = 0, 0.16 and 0.25) have been investigated as solid oxide fuel cell cathode materials. The combustion derived rare earth manganites have surface area in the range of 13-40 m(2)/g. Strontium substitution increases the electrical conductivity values in all the rare earth manganites. With the decreasing ionic radii of rare earth ions, the conductivity value decreases. Among the rare earth manganites studied, (Pr/Nd)(0.75)Sr0.25MnO3 show high electrical conductivity ( > 100 S/cm). The thermal expansion coefficients of Pr0.75Sr0.25MnO3 and Nd0.75Sr0.25MnO3 were found to be 10.2 x 10(-6) and 10.7 x 10(-6) K-1 respectively, which is very close to that of the electrolyte (YSZ) used in solid oxide fuel cells. The optimisation is reported on the design of unbalanced magnetron (UBM) sputtering cathodes. For the study, a planar circular cathode backed by a double-coil electromagnet (compatible for a 100 mm diameter target) was developed. The variation of the structure and strength of the magnetic field in front of the target was investigated for different current combinations in the electromagnetic coils, and its effect on the sputtering process was analysed. The observations on the magnetic field geometry revealed some interesting features, such as the balancing point of the fields along the axis (null-point), and the zero axial region over the target surface (B-z = 0 ring). The positions of both could be controlled by adjusting the ratio of the electric current in the coils. The magnetic field null-point could be used as a reference for the region of homogeneous film growth. The B-z = 0 ring was the location where the glow discharge concentrated (or where the maximum target erosion occurred). The diameter of the ring determined the area covered by the discharge and thus the sputtering efficiency. The optimum substrate position can be fixed according to the position of the null-point and optimisation of sputtering can be achieved by adjusting the diameter of the B-z = 0 ring. The results of this study should be helpful in the designing of an ideal UBM using permanent magnets as well as electromagnets. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Recently, we demonstrated a very general route to monolithic macroporous materials prepared without the use of templates (Rajamathi et al. J. Mater. Chem. 2001, 11, 2489). The route involves finding a precursor containing two metals, A and B, whose oxides are largely immiscible. Firing of the precursor followed by suitable sintering results in a monolith from which one of the oxide phases can be chemically leached out to yield a macroporous mass of the other oxide phase. The metals A and B that we employed in the demonstration were Ni and Zn. From the NiO-ZnO monolith that was obtained by decomposing the precursor, ZnO could be leached out at high pH to yield macroporous NiO. In the present work, we show that combustion-chemical (also called self-propagating) decomposition of a mixture of Ni and Zn nitrates with urea as a fuel yields an intimate mixture of the oxides that can be sintered and leached with alkali to form a macroporous NiO monolith. The new process that we present here thereby avoids the need for a crystalline single-source precursor. A novel and unanticipated aspect of the present work is that the combination of high temperatures and rapid quenching associated with combustion synthesis results in an intimate mixture of wurtzite ZnO and the metastable rock-salt Ni1-xZnxO where x is about 0.3. Leaching this monolith with alkali gives a macroporous mass of rock-salt Ni1-xZnxO, which upon reduction in H-2/Ar forms macroporous Ni and ZnO. There are thus two stages in the process that lead to two modes of pore formation. The first is associated with leaching of ZnO by alkali. The second is associated with the reduction of porous Ni1-xZnxO to give porous Ni and ZnO.

The non-resonant perturbation formula for the measurement of interaction impedance of a folded-waveguide slow-wave structure was derived for the relevant electromagnetic field configuration at the axis of the beam-hole of the structure. Efficacy of the theory was benchmarked through virtual measurement using 3D electromagnetic modeling in CST-studio.

Partially grain-oriented (48%) ceramics of strontium bismuth tantalate (SrBi2Ta2O9) have been fabricated via conventional sintering. The grain-orientation factor of the ceramics was determined, as a function of both the sintering temperature and duration of sintering using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) techniques. Variations in microstructural features (from acircular to plate like morphology) as a function of sintering temperature of the pellets were monitored by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The dielectric constant and loss measurements as functions of both frequency and temperature have been carried out along the directions parallel and perpendicular to the pressing axis. The anisotropy (epsilon(rn)/epsilon(rp)) associated was found to be 2.21. The effective dielectric constant of the samples with varying porosity was predicted using different dielectric mixture formulae. The grain boundary and grain interior contributions to the dielectric properties were rationalized using the impedance spectroscopy. The pyroelectric coefficient for strontium bismuth tantalate ceramic was determined along the parallel and perpendicular directions to the pressing axis and found to be -23 muC/m(2)K and -71 muC/m(2)K, respectively at 300 K. The ferroelectric properties of these partially grain-oriented ceramics are superior in the direction perpendicular to the pressing axis to that in the parallel direction.

We describe here a photoelectron spectroscopy beamline installed on Indus-1 storage ring. Initially we give a brief description of optical and mechanical layout of beam-line. The beamline optics was designed to cover energy range from 10 eV to 200 eV and it consists of a pre-focusing mirror, a toroidal grating monochromator and a post-focusing mirror. We then discuss indigenously developed ultra high vacuum compatible work station to carry out angle integrated photoemission experiments. The beamline has been successfully commissioned and photoemission measurements on a variety of standard samples are presented.

The low thermal expansion ceramic system, Ca1-xSrxZr4P6O24, for the compositions with x = 0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75 and 1 was synthesized by solid-state reaction. The sintering characteristics were ascertained by bulk density measurements. The fracture surface microstructure examined by scanning electron microscopy showed the average grain size of 2.47 mum for all the compositions. The thermal expansion data for these ceramic systems over the temperature range 25-800degreesC is reported. The sinterability of various solid solutions and the hysteresis in dilatometric behaviour are shown to be related to the crystallographic thermal expansion anisotropy. A steady increase in the amount of porosity and critical grain size with increase in x is suggested to explain the observed decrease in the hysteresis.
