A simple but self-consistent microscopic theory for the time dependent solvation energy of both ions and dipoles is presented which includes, for the first time, the details of the self-motion of the probe on its own solvation dynamics. The theory leads to several interesting predictions. The most important of them is that, for dipolar solvation, both the rotational and the translational motions of the dipolar solute probe can significantly accelerate the rate of solvation. In addition, the rotational self-motion of the solute can also give rise to an additional mechanism of nonexponentiality in solvation time correlation functions in otherwise slow liquids. A comparison between the present theoretical predictions and the recent experimental studies of Maroncelli et al. on solvation dynamics of aniline in l-propanol seems to indicate that the said experiments have missed the initial solvent response up to about 45 ps. After mapping the experimental results on the redefined time scale, the theoretical results can explain the experimental results for solvation of aniline in 1-propanol very well. For ionic solvation, the translational motion is significant for light solutes only. For example, for Li+ in water, translational motion speeds up the solvation by about 20%. The present theory demonstrates that in dipolar solvation the partial quenching of the self-motion due to the presence of specific solute-solvent interactions (such as H-bonding) may lead to a much slower solvation than that when the self-motion is present. This point has been discussed. In addition, we present the theoretical results for solvation of aniline in propylene carbonate, Here, the solvation is predicted to be complete within 15-20 ps.

Three new cationic amphiphiles bearing anthraquinone moieties at the polar headgroup region were synthesized, The single-chain amphiphile, N,N-dimethyl-N-octadecyl-N-(9,10-dihydro dioxoanthracen-2-ylmethyl)ammonium bromide 1, in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide upon dispersion in water gave co-micellar aggregates containing covalently attached anthraquinone residues at the polar aqueous interfaces. The other two double-chain amphiphiles, N,N-dioctadecyl-N-methyl-N-(9,10-dihydro-9,10-dioxoanthracen-2-ylmethyl)ammonium bromide 2 and N,N-dimethyl-N-(1,2-bispalmitoyloxypropanyl)-N-(9,10-dihydro-9,10-dioxanthracen-2-ylmethyl)ammonium bromide 3, however, on dispersion in aqueous media produced vesicular aggregates. The critical temperatures for the gel to liquid-crystalline-like phase transition processes for the vesicular systems were determined by following temperature-dependent changes in the ratios of keto-enol tautomeric forms of benzoylacetanilide doped within respective. vesicular assemblies. The redox chemistry of the these supramolecular assemblies was also studied by following the time-dependent changes in the ITV-VIS absorption spectroscopy in the presence of exogenous reducing or oxidizing agents, Electrochemical studies using glassy carbon electrodes reveal that redox-active amphiphiles adsorb on to the glassy carbon surfaces to form electroactive deposits when dipped into aqueous suspensions of either of these aggregates irrespective of the micellar or vesicular nature of the dispersions.

Damage detection by measuring and analyzing vibration signals in a machine component is an established procedure in mechanical and aerospace engineering. This paper presents vibration signature analysis of steel bridge structures in a nonconventional way using artificial neural networks (ANN). Multilayer perceptrons have been adopted using the back-propagation algorithm for network training. The training patterns in terms of vibration signature are generated analytically for a moving load traveling on a trussed bridge structure at a constant speed to simulate the inspection vehicle. Using the finite-element technique, the moving forces are converted into stationary time-dependent force functions in order to generate vibration signals in the structure and the same is used to train the network. The performance of the trained networks is examined for their capability to detect damage from unknown signatures taken independently at one, three, and five nodes. It has been observed that the prediction using the trained network with single-node signature measurement at a suitability chosen location is even better than that of three-node and five-node measurement data.

Time-dependent wavepacket propagation techniques have been used to calculate the absorption spectrum and the resonance Raman excitation profiles of the n-pi* transition in azobenzene. A comparison of both the calculated absorption spectrum and excitation profiles with experiment has been made. From an analysis of the data, it is concluded that the Raman intensities are mainly due to resonance from the n-pi* transition and not from the pre-resonance of the pi-pi* transition, as reported earlier. We find that the isomerization pathway is through the inversion mechanism rather than by rotation. This is the first direct spectroscopic evidence for the isomerization pathway in trans-azobenzene.

A newly developed and validated constitutive model that accounts for primary compression and time-dependent mechanical creep and biodegradation is used for parametric study to investigate the effects of model parameters on the predicted settlement of municipal solid waste (MSW) with time. The model enables the prediction of stress strain response and yield surfaces for three components of settlement: primary compression, mechanical creep, and biodegradation. The MSW parameters investigated include compression index, coefficient of earth pressure at-rest, overconsolidation ratio, and biodegradation parameters of MSW. A comparison of the predicted settlements for typical MSW landfill conditions showed significant differences in time-settlement response depending on the selected model input parameters. The effect of lift thickness of MSW on predicted settlement is also investigated. Overall, the study shows that the variation in the model parameters can lead to significantly different results; therefore, the model parameter values should be carefully selected to predict landfill settlements accurately. It is shown that the proposed model captures the time settlement response which is in general agreement with the results obtained from the other two reported models having similar features. We analyze the origin of de-enhancement for a number of vibrational modes in the 2(1)A(g) excited state of trans-azobenzene. We have used the time-dependent wave packet analysis of the RR intensities by including the multimode damping effects in the calculation. This avoids the use of unrealistically large values for the damping parameter. It is concluded that the de-enhancement is caused by the interference between the two uncoupled electronic states, and that the intensities observed under the so-called symmetry forbidden 2(1)A(g) <-- 1(1)A(g) transition are purely due to resonance excitation. It is also observed that the use of the time-dependent approach to study the de-enhancement effects caused by multiple electronic states on the RR intensities is not necessarily useful if one is interested in the structural dynamics.

Recently three different experimental studies on ultrafast solvation dynamics in monohydroxy straight-chain alcohols (C-1-C-4) have been carried out, with an aim to quantify the time constant (and the amplitude) of the ultrafast component. The results reported are, however, rather different from different experiments. In order to understand the reason for these differences, we have carried out a detailed theoretical study to investigate the time dependent progress of solvation of both an ionic and a dipolar solute probe in these alcohols. For methanol, the agreement between the theoretical predictions and the experimental results [Bingemann and Ernsting J. Chem. Phys. 1995, 102, 2691 and Horng et al. J: Phys, Chern, 1995, 99, 17311] is excellent. For ethanol, propanol, and butanol, we find no ultrafast component of the time constant of 70 fs or so. For these three liquids, the theoretical results are in almost complete agreement with the experimental results of Horng et al. For ethanol and propanol, the theoretical prediction for ionic solvation is not significantly different from that of dipolar solvation. Thus, the theory suggests that the experiments of Bingemann and Ernsting and those of Horng et al. studied essentially the polar solvation dynamics. The theoretical studies also suggest that the experimental investigations of Joo et al. which report a much faster and larger ultrafast component in the same series of solvents (J. Chem. Phys. 1996, 104, 6089) might have been more sensitive to the nonpolar part of solvation dynamics than the polar part. In addition, a discussion on the validity of the present theoretical approach is presented. In this theory the ultrafast component arises from almost frictionless inertial motion of the individual solvent molecules in the force field of its neighbors.

Thin films of barium strontium titanate (BST) including BaTiO3 and SrTiO3 end members were deposited using the metallo-organic decomposition (MOD) technique. Processing parameters such as nonstoichiometry, annealing temperature and time, film thickness and doping concentration were correlated with the structural and electrical properties of the films. A random polycrystalline structure was observed for all MOD films under the processing conditions in this study. The microstructures of the films showed multi-grains structure through the film thickness. A dielectric constant of 563 was observed for (Ba0.7Sr0.3)TiO3 films rapid thermal annealed at 750 degrees C for 60 s. The dielectric constant increased with annealing temperature and film thickness, while the dielectric constant could reach the bulk values for thicknesses as thin as similar to 0.3 mu m. Nonstoichiometry and doping in the films resulted in a lowering of the dielectric constant. For near-stoichiometric films, a small dielectric dispersion obeying the Curie-von Schweidler type dielectric response was observed. This behavior may be attributed to the presence of the high density of disordered grain boundaries. All MOD processed films showed trap-distributed space-charge limited conduction (SCLC) behavior with slope of similar to 7.5-10 regardless of the chemistry and processing parameter due to the presence of main boundaries through the film thickness. The grain boundaries masked the effect of donor-doping, so that all films showed distributed-trap SCLC behavior without discrete-traps. Donor-doping could significantly improve the time-dependent dielectric breakdown behavior of BST thin films, mostly likely due to the lower oxygen vacancy concentration resulted from donor-doping. From the results of charge storage density, leakage current and time-dependent dielectric breakdown behavior, BST thin films are found to be promising candidates for 64 and 256Mb ULSI DRAM applications. This paper presents nonlinear finite element analysis of adhesively bonded joints considering the elastoviscoplastic constitutive model of the adhesive material and the finite rotation of the joint. Though the adherends have been assumed to be linearly elastic, the yielding of the adhesive is represented by a pressure sensitive modified von Mises yield function. The stress-strain relation of the adhesive is represented by the Ramberg-Osgood relation. Geometric nonlinearity due to finite rotation in the joint is accounted for using the Green-Lagrange strain tensor and the second Piola-Kirchhoff stress tensor in a total Lagrangian formulation. Critical time steps have been calculated based on the eigenvalues of the transition matrices of the viscoplastic model of the adhesive. Stability of the viscoplastic solution and time dependent behaviour of the joints are examined. A parametric study has been carried out with particular reference to peel and shear stress along the interface. Critical zones for failure of joints have been identified. The study is of significance in the design of lap joints as well as on the characterization of adhesive strength. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Using an efficient numerical scheme that exploits spatial symmetries and spin parity, we have obtained the exact low-lying eigenstates of exchange Hamiltonians for ferric wheels up to Fe-12. The largest calculation involves the Fe-12 ring which spans a Hilbert space dimension of about 145x10(6) for the M-S=0 subspace. Our calculated gaps from the singlet ground state to the excited triplet state agree well with the experimentally measured values. Study of the static structure factor shows that the ground state is spontaneously dimerized for ferric wheels. The spin states of ferric wheels can be viewed as quantized states of a rigid rotor with the gap between the ground and first excited states defining the inverse of the moment of inertia. We have studied the quantum dynamics of Fe-10 as a representative of ferric wheels. We use the low-lying states of Fe-10 to solve exactly the time-dependent Schrodinger equation and find the magnetization of the molecule in the presence of an alternating magnetic field at zero temperature. We observe a nontrivial oscillation of the magnetization which is dependent on the amplitude of the ac field. We have also studied the torque response of Fe-12 as a function of a magnetic field, which clearly shows spin-state crossover.

We present an extensive study on magnetic and transport properties of La(0.85)Sr(0.15)CoO(3) single crystals grown by a float zone method to address the issue of phase separation versus spin-glass (SG) behavior. The dc magnetization study reveals a kink in field-cooled magnetization, and the peak in the zero-field-cooling curve shifts to lower temperature at modest dc fields, indicating the SG magnetic phase. The ac susceptibility study exhibits a considerable frequency-dependent peak shift (similar to 4 K) and a time-dependent memory effect below the freezing temperature. In addition, the characteristic time scale tau(0) estimated from the frequency-dependent ac susceptibility measurement is found to be similar to 10(-13) s, which matches well with typical values observed in canonical SG systems. The transport relaxation study evidently demonstrates the time-dependent glassy phenomena. In essence, all our experimental results corroborate the existence of SG behavior in La(0.85)Sr(0.15)CoO(3) single crystals.

Current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of quench condensed, superconducting, ultrathin Bi films in a magnetic field are reported. These I-V's show hysteresis for all films, grown both with and without thin Ge underlayers. Films on Ge underlayers, close to superconductor-insulator transition, show a peak in the critical current, indicating a structural transformation of the vortex solid. These underlayers, used to make the films more homogeneous, are found to be more effective in pinning the vortices. The upper critical fields (B-c2) of these films are determined from the resistive transitions in perpendicular magnetic field. The temperature dependence of the upper critical field is found to differ significantly from Ginzburg-Landau theory, after modifications for disorder.

We consider evolving exponential RGGs in one dimension and characterize the time dependent behavior of some of their topological properties. We consider two evolution models and study one of them detail while providing a summary of the results for the other. In the first model, the inter-nodal gaps evolve according to an exponential AR(1) process that makes the stationary distribution of the node locations exponential. For this model we obtain the one-step conditional connectivity probabilities and extend it to the k-step case. Finite and asymptotic analysis are given. We then obtain the k-step connectivity probability conditioned on the network being disconnected. We also derive the pmf of the first passage time for a connected network to become disconnected. We then describe a random birth-death model where at each instant, the node locations evolve according to an AR(1) process. In addition, a random node is allowed to die while giving birth to a node at another location. We derive properties similar to those above.

We obtain, by extensive direct numerical simulations, time-dependent and equal-time structure functions for the vorticity, in both quasi-Lagrangian and Eulerian frames, for the direct-cascade regime in two-dimensional fluid turbulence with air-drag-induced friction. We show that different ways of extracting time scales from these time-dependent structure functions lead to different dynamic-multiscaling exponents, which are related to equal-time multiscaling exponents by different classes of bridge relations; for a representative value of the friction we verify that, given our error bars, these bridge relations hold.

A cationic amphiphile, cholest-5en-3 beta-oxyethyl pyridinium bromide (PY(+)-Chol), is able to efficiently disperse exfoliated graphene (GR) in water by the physical adsorption of PY(+)-Chol on the surface of GR to form stable, dark aqueous suspensions at room temperature. The GRPY(+)-Chol suspension can then be used to solubilize Tamoxifen Citrate (TmC), a breast cancer drug, in water. The resulting TmCGRPY(+)-Chol is stable for a long time without any precipitation. Fluorescence emission and UV absorption spectra indicate the existence of noncovalent interactions between TmC, GR, and PY(+)-Chol in these suspensions. Electron microscopy shows the existence of segregated GR sheets and TmC ribbons in the composite suspensions. Atomic force microscopy indicates the presence of extended structures of GRPY(+)-Chol, which grows wider in the presence of TmC. The slow time-dependent release of TmC is noticed in a reconstituted cell culture medium, a property useful as a drug carrier. TmCGRPY(+)-Chol selectively enhanced the cell death (apoptosis) of the transformed cancer cells compared to normal cells. This potency is found to be true for a wide range of transformed cancer cells viz. HeLa, A549, ras oncogene-transformed NIH3T3, HepG2, MDA-MB231, MCF-7, and HEK293T compared to the normal cell HEK293 in vitro. Confocal microscopy confirmed the high efficiency of TmCGRPY(+)-Chol in delivering the drug to the cells, compared to the suspensions devoid of GR.
