We conducted a survey to determine the vectors of malaria in six localities of Serra do Navio municipality, State of Amapá, from 1990 to 1991. Malaria infection rates of 29.3%, 6.2% and 20.4% were detected by human blood smears in Colônia Água Branca, Porto Terezinha and Arrependido, respectively. There was no malaria infection detected in Serra do Navio. Fifteen species were identified among 3,053 anopheline mosquitoes collected by human bait and 64.4% were identified as Anopheles albitarsis s.l., 16.7% An. braziliensis, 9.5% An. nuneztovari and 5.8% An. triannulatus. An. darlingi, the main vector of malaria in the Amazon region of Brazil, was scare. Using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), a total positive rate of 0.8% (23/2876) was found for six species: fifteen An. albitarsis s.l., four An. nuneztovari, and one of each: An. braziliensis, An. triannulatus, An. oswaldoi and An. rangeli. Nine of 23 positive mosquitoes were infected with Plasmodium malariae, eight with P. vivax VK210, three with P. vivax VK247 and three with P. falciparum. Since An. albitarsis s.l. was collected feeding on humans, was present in the highest density and was positive by ELISA for malaria sporozoites, it probably plays an important role in malaria transmission in this area.

The prevalence of antibodies to hepatitis B core antigen in 552 prime blood donors was of 9.4%. The majority (71.2%) has antibodies to hepatitis B surface antigen. The hepatitis B surface antigen was present in 0.7%, all of them antibodies to hepatitis B core antigen positive.

Major and trace element compositions, stable H and 0 isotope compositions and Fe 31 contents of amphibole megacrysts of Pliocene-Pleistocene alkaline basalts have been investigated to obtain information on the origin of mantle fluids beneath the Carpathian-Pannonian region. The megacrysts have been regarded as igneous cumulates formed in the mantle and brought to the surface by the basaltic magma. The studied amphiboles have oxygen isotope compositions (5.4 +/- 0.2 %., 1 sigma), supporting their primary mantle origin. Even within the small 6180 variation observed, correlations with major and trace elements are detected. The negative delta(18)O-MgO and the positive delta(18)O-La/Sm(N) correlations are interpreted to have resulted from varying degrees of partial melting. The halogen (F, Cl) contents are very low (< 0.1 wt. %), however, a firm negative (F+Cl)-MgO correlation (R(2) = 0.84) can be related to the Mg-Cl avoidance in the amphibole structure. The relationships between water contents, H isotope compositions and Fe 31 contents of the amphibole megacrysts revealed degassing. Selected undegassed amphibole megacrysts show a wide 813 range from -80 to -20 parts per thousand. The low delta D value is characteristic of the normal mantle, whereas the high delta D values may indicate the influence of fluids released from subducted oceanic crust. The chemical and isotopic evidence collectively suggest that formation of the amphibole megacrysts is related to fluid metasomatism, whereas direct melt addition is insignificant.

In the last few years the number of human cases of American visceral leishmaniasis in the Metropolitan Region of Belo Horizonte (MRBH), Minas Gerais, Brazil has increased, indicating an elevation in the transmission rate of the disease. The total number of notified human cases in the MRBH since 1994, when the first case was identified, up to 1999 was 345 of which 223 (65%) were from the city itself, indicating an urbanization of the disease in this region of Minas Gerais. The age distribution of visceral leishmaniasis cases in the MRBH shows a higher prevalence in children from 0-4 years old, responsible for 28.9% of the notifications. Clinical and immunological findings from dogs infected with Leishmania chagasi are described. The majority of these animals showed no sign of the disease. Sera from all infected dogs showed detectable Leishmania-induced high titles of antibodies based on the results of an indirect fluorescent antibody test. Samples of isolated Leishmania from human and dogs were characterized as L. (L.) chagasi by biochemical and molecular techniques.

Lutzomyia umbratilis, a known vector of Leishmania guyanensis in the north of Amazon basin, has been exclusively found in the Amazonian region. Here we report for the first time the occurrence of this species in northeastern Brazil. The epidemiological importance of the occurrence of this species in the Atlantic Forest is commented.
