CMOS/SOS devices have lower carriers mobility and higher channel leakage current than bulk silicon CMOS devices. These mainly results from the defects of heteroepitaxial silicon film, especially from the defects near Si-Sapphire interface. This paper describes the experiment results of CMOS/SOS devices characteristics improved by a better epitaxial silicon quality which is obtained by a modified solid phase epitaxy.

An augmented immersed interface method (IIM) is proposed for simulating one-phase moving contact line problems in which a liquid drop spreads or recoils on a solid substrate. While the present two-dimensional mathematical model is a free boundary problem, in our new numerical method, the fluid domain enclosed by the free boundary is embedded into a rectangular one so that the problem can be solved by a regular Cartesian grid method. We introduce an augmented variable along the free boundary so that the stress balancing boundary condition is satisfied. A hybrid time discretization is used in the projection method for better stability. The resultant Helmholtz/Poisson equations with interfaces then are solved by the IIM in an efficient way. Several numerical tests including an accuracy check, and the spreading and recoiling processes of a liquid drop are presented in detail. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A slab optical waveguide (SOWG) has been used for study of adsorption of both methylene blue (MB) and new methylene blue (NMB) in liquid-solid interface. Adsorption characteristics of MB and NMB on both bare SOWG and silanized SOWG by octadecyltrichlorosilane (ODS) were compared. The simultaneous determinations of both MB and NMB were explored by flow injection SOWG spectrophotometric analysis and artificial neural networks (ANNs) for the first time. Concentrations of MB and NMB were estimated simultaneously with the ANNs. Results obtained with SOWG were compared with those got by conventional UV-visible spectrophotometry. A simple preparation process of alkylamide phase for reversed-phase HPLC (RP-HPLC) is described. The process includes aminopropyltrimethoxysilane firstly reacted with octanoyl chloride, then the intermediate was coupled onto porous silica. The resultant bonded silica has a reproducible ligand surface concentration and homogenous bonded ligand distribution on the porous silica. Characterization of prepared packing was carried out with elemental analysis, solid-state C-13 NMR and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR). Chromatographic evaluations were carried out by using a mixture of organic compounds including acidic, basic and neutral analytes under methanol/water as binary mobile phase. The results showed that the stationary phase have excellent chromatographic properties and can be efficiently used for the separation of basic compounds.

A new kind of bismuth film modified electrode to sensitively detect trace metal ions based on incorporating highly conductive ionic liquids 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium hexafluorophosphate (BMIMPF6) in solid matrices at glassy carbon (GC) was investigated. Poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS), silica, and Nafion were selected as the solid matrices. The electrochemical properties of the mixed films modified GC were evaluated. The electron transfer rate of Fe(CN)(6)(4-)/Fe(CN)(6)(3-) can be effectively improved at the PSS-BMIMPF6 modified GC.

The formation of reversed micelles and the roles of extractant and extracted complexes were investigated in the Cyanex923/n-heptane/H2SO4 system. Interfacial tension (gamma), electrical conductivity (kappa), and water content measurements showed that Cyanex923 had a tendency to self-assemble, forming reversed micelles. The changes in electrical conductivity with concentration of H2SO4 in the organic phase (CH2SO4,(0)) exhibited an S-type curve: a correlation was found between the change in electrical conductivity and the water content as a function of CH2SO4,(0),.

5,10,15,20-Tetra-[(p-alkoxy-m-ethyloxy)phenyl]porphyrin and [5-(p-alkoxy)phenyl-10,15,20-tri-phenyl]porphyrin and their holmium(III) complexes are reported. They display a hexagonal columnar discotic columnar Col(h)) liquid crystal phase and were studied by cyclic voltammetry, surface photovoltage spectroscopy (SPS), electric-field-induced surface photovoltage spectroscopy (EFISPS) and luminescence spectroscopy. Within the accessible potential window, all these compounds exhibit two one-electron reversible redox reactions. Quantum yields of Q band are in the region 0.0045-0.21 at room temperature. The SPS and EFISPS reveal that all the compounds are p-type semiconductors and exhibit photovoltaic response due to pi-pi* electron transitions.

Single-walled carbon nanohorn (SWCNH) was developed as new adsorbent for solid-phase extraction using 4-nitrophenol as representative. The unique exoteric structures and high surface area of SWCNH allow extracting a large amount of 4-nitrophenol over a short time. Highly sensitive determination of 4-nitrophenol was achieved by linear sweep voltammetry after only 120 s extraction. The calibration plot for 4-nitrophenol determination is linear in the range of 5.0 x 10(-8) M-1.0 x 10(-5) M under optimum conditions. The detection limit is 1.1 x 10(-8) M. The proposed method was successfully employed to determine 4-nitrophenol in lake water samples, and the recoveries of the spiked 4-nitrophenol were excellent (92-106%).

A new cyclic guanidinium ionic liquid OGI (1,3-dimethyl-2-N ''-methyl-N ''-octylimidazoguanidinium iodide) has been used as a quasi-solid-state electrolyte for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs), and 6.38% conversion efficiency was achieved at AM 1.5 simulated sunlight (9.81 mW cm(-2)). Further gelation with SiO2 nanoparticles afforded the solid-state electrolyte, which presented overall conversion efficiency of 5.85%. The diffusion properties of these OGI-based electrolytes were investigated. In the meantime, the optimal structure and ion-pairing interaction in OGI have been proposed by density functional theoretical calculation (DFT) at the B3LYP/6-21G(d,p) level.

As a green process, electrochemistry in aqueous solution without a supporting electrolyte has been described based on a simple polyelectrolyte-functionalized ionic liquid (PFIL)-modified electrode. The studied PFIL material combines features of ionic liquids and traditional polyelectrolytes. The ionic liquid part provides a high ionic conductivity and affinity to many different compounds. The polyelectrolyte part has a good stability in aqueous solution and a capability of being immobilized on different substrates. The electrochemical properties of such a PFIL-modified electrode assembly in a supporting electrolyte-free solution have been investigated by using an electrically neutral electroactive species, hydroquinone ( HQ) as the model compound. The partition coefficient and diffusion coefficient of HQ in the PFIL film were calculated to be 0.346 and 4.74 X 10(-6) cm(2) s(-1), respectively. Electrochemistry in PFIL is similar to electrochemistry in a solution of traditional supporting electrolytes, except that the electrochemical reaction takes place in a thin film on the surface of the electrode. PFILs are easily immobilized on solid substrates, are inexpensive and electrochemically stable. A PFIL-modified electrode assembly is successfully used in the flow analysis of HQ by amperometric detection in solution without a supporting electrolyte.

The adsorption behavior of methanol, ethanol, n-butanol, n-hexanol and n-octanol on mica surface was investigated by atomic force microscopy. All these alcohols have formed homogeneous films with different characteristics. Upright standing bilayer structure was formed on methanol adsorbed mica surface. For ethanol, bilayer structure and monolayer one were simultaneously formed, while for n-butanol and n-hexanol, rough films were observed. What was formed for n-octanol? Close-packed flat film was observed on n-octanol adsorbed mica substrate, the film was assumed to be a tilted monolayer. The possible adsorption model for each alcohol molecule was proposed according to its adsorption behavior.

Ceramic carbon materials were developed as new sorbents for solid-phase extraction of organic compounds using chlorpromazine as a representative. The macroporosity and heterogeneity of ceramic carbon materials allow extracting a large amount of chlorpromazine over a short time. Thus, the highly sensitive and selective determination of chlorpromazine in urine sample was achieved by differential pulse voltammograms after only 1-min extraction. The total analysis time was less than 3 min. In comparison with other electrochemical and electrochemi-luminescent methods following 1-min extraction, the proposed method improved sensitivity by about 2 and 1 order of magnitude, respectively. The fast extraction, diversity, and conductivity of ceramic carbon materials make them promising sorbents for various solid-phase extractions, such as solid-phase microextraction, thin-film microextraction, and electrochemically controlled solidphase extraction. The preliminary applications of ceramic carbon materials in chromatography were also studied.
