Organic-inorganic composite membranes comprising Nation with inorganic materials such as silica, mesoporous zirconium phosphate (MZP) and mesoporous titanium phosphate (MTP) are fabricated and evaluated as proton-exchange-membrane electrolytes for direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). For Nation-silica composite membrane, silica is impregnated into Nation matrix as a sol by a novel water hydrolysis process precluding the external use of an acid. Instead, the acidic nature of Nation facilitates in situ polymerization reaction with Nation leading to a uniform composite membrane. The rapid hydrolysis and polymerization reaction while preparing zirconia and titania sols leads to uncontrolled thickness and volume reduction in the composite membranes, and hence is not conducive for casting membranes. Nafion-MZP and Nafion-MTP composite membranes are prepared by mixing pre-formed porous MZP and MTP with Nation matrix. MZP and MTP are synthesised by co-assembly of a tri-block co-polymer, namely pluronic-F127, as a structure-directing agent, and a mixture of zirconium butoxide/titanium isopropoxide and phosphorous trichloride as inorganic precursors. Methanol release kinetics is studied by volume-localized NMR spectroscopy (employing ``point resolved spectroscopy'', PRESS), the results clearly demonstrating that the incorporation of inorganic fillers in Nation retards the methanol release kinetics under osmotic drag. Appreciable proton conductivity with reduced methanol permeability across the composite membranes leads to improved performance of DMFCs in relation to commercially available Nafion-117 membrane.

Eight new open-framework inorganic-organic hybrid compounds based on indium have been synthesized employing hydrothermal methods. All of the compounds have InO6, C2O4, and HPO3/HPO4/SO4 units connected to form structures of different dimensionality Thus, the compounds have zero- (I), two- (II, III, IV, V, VII, and VIII), and three-dimensionally (VI) extended networks. The formation of the first zero-dimensional hybrid compound is noteworthy In addition, concomitant polymorphic structures have been observed in the present study. The molecular compound, I, was found to be reactive, and the transformation studies in the presence of a base (pyridine) give rise to the polymorphic structures of II and III, while the addition of an acid (H3PO3) gives rise to a new indium phosphite with a pillared layer structure (T1). Preliminary density functional theory calculations suggest that the stabilities of the polymorphs are different, with one of the forms (II) being preferred over the other, which is consistent with the observed experimental behavior. The oxalate units perform more than one role in the present structures. Thus, the oxalate units connect two In centers to satisfy the coordination requirements as well as to achieve charge balance in compounds II, IV, and VI. The terminal oxalate units observed in compounds I, IV, and V suggest the possibility of intermediate structures. Both in-plane and out-of-plane connectivity of the oxalate units were observed in compound VI. The 31 compounds have been characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and P-31 NMR studies.

A solvothermal reaction of ZnO, boric acid (B(OH)(3)), and aliphatic airlines in a water-pyridine mixture gave four zinc borate phases of different dimensionalities: [Zn(B4O8H2)(C3H10N2)], I (one-dimensional); [Zn(B4O8H2)(C3H10N2)] H2O, II (two-dimensional); [Zn(B5O10H3)(C10H24N4)]center dot H2O, III (two-dimensional): and [Zn-2(B8O15H2)(C3H10N2)(2)], IV (three-dimensional). The structures are formed by the connectivity involving polyborate chains and layers with Zn2+ species. In all the compounds, the amine molecules act its file ligand binding either the same or different zn centers. The formation of two different structures, II and IV, from the same amine by varying the reaction time is noteworthy. Transformation studies on II indicate that the formation of IV. from II, is facile and has been investigated for the first time. Two of file compounds, I and III, exhibit activity for second-order nonlinear optical behavior. The UV exposure of the sample indicates the absorption of all the UV radiation suggesting that the zinc borate compounds could be exploited for UV-blocking applications. The compounds have been characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, UV-vis, photoluminescence, and NMR studies.

One-dimensional (1D) proton NMR spectra of enantiomers are generally undecipherable in chiral orienting poly-gamma-benzyl-L-glutamate (PBLG)/CDCl3 solvent. This arises due to large number of couplings, in addition to superposition of spectra from both the enantiomers, severely hindering the H-1 detection. On the other hand in the present study the benefit is derived front the presence of several couplings among the entire network of interacting protons. Transition selective 1D H-1-H-1 correlation experiment (1D-COSY) which utilizes the Coupling assisted transfer of magnetization not only for unraveling the overlap but also for the selective detection of enantiopure spectrum is reported. The experiment is simple, easy to implement and provides accurate eanantiomeric excess in addition to the determination of the proton-proton couplings of an enantiomer within a short experimental time (few minutes). Pivaloyl-L-Pro-Aib-N-methylamihdaes been shown to possess one intramolecular hydrogen bond in (CD&SO solution, by 'H-nmr methods, suggesting the existence of p-turns, with Pro-Aib as the corner residues. Theoretical conformational analysis suggests that Type II P-turn conformations are about 2 kcal mol-' more stable than Type 111 structures. A crystallographic study has established the Type I1 /%turn in the solid state. The molecule crystallizes in the space group P21 with a = 5.865 8, b = 11.421 A, c = 12.966 A, /3 = 97.55", and 2 = 2. The structure has been refined to a final R value of 0.061. The Type I1 p-turn conformation is stabilized by an intramolecular 4 - 1 hydrogen bond between the methylamide NH and the pivaloyl CO group. The conformational angles are @pro= -57.8", $pro = 139.3', @Aib = 61.4', and $Ajb = 25.1'. The Type 11 /%turn conformation for Pro-Aib in this peptide is compared with the Type I11 structures observed for the same segment in larger peptides.

The blue emission of ethyl-hexyl substituted polyfluorene (PF2/6) films is accompanied by a low energy green emission peak around 500 nm in inert atmosphere. The intensity of this 500 nm peak is large in electroluminescence (EL) compared to photoluminescence (PL)measurements. Furthermore, the green emission intensity reduces dramatically in the presence of molecular oxygen. To understand this, we have modeled various nonradiative processes by time dependent quantum many body methods. These are (i) intersystem crossing to study conversion of excited singlets to triplets leading to a phosphorescence emission, (ii) electron-hole recombination (e-hR) process in the presence of a paramagnetic impurity to follow the yield of triplets in a polyene system doped with paramagnetic metal atom, and (iii) quenching of excited triplet states in the presence of oxygen molecules to understand the low intensity of EL emission in ambient atmosphere, when compared with that in nitrogen atmosphere. We have employed the Pariser-Parr-Pople Hamiltonian to model the molecules and have invoked electron-electron repulsions beyond zero differential approximation while treating interactions between the organic molecule and the rest of the system. Our time evolution methods show that there is a large cross section for triplet formation in the e-hR process in the presence of paramagnetic impurity with degenerate orbitals. The triplet yield through e-hR process far exceeds that in the intersystem crossing pathway, clearly pointing to the large intensity of the 500 nm peak in EL compared to PL measurements. We have also modeled the triplet quenching process by a paramagnetic oxygen molecule which shows a sizable quenching cross section especially for systems with large sizes. These studies show that the most probable origin of the experimentally observed low energy EL emission is the triplets.

In3+ was used as dopant for BaZrO3 proton conductor and 30 at%-doped BaZrO3 samples (BaZr0.7In 0.3O3-δ, BZI) were prepared as electrolyte materials for proton-conducting solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). The BZI material showed a much improved sinteractivity compared with the conventional Y-doped BaZrO 3. The BZI pellets reached almost full density after sintering at 1600 °C for 10 h, whereas the Y-doped BaZrO3 samples still remained porous under the same sintering conditions. The conductivity measurements indicated that BZI pellets showed smaller bulk but improved grain boundary proton conductivity, when compared with Y-doped BaZrO3 samples. A total proton conductivity of 1.7 × 10-3 S cm -1 was obtained for the BZI sample at 700 °C in wet 10% H 2 atmosphere. The BZI electrolyte material also showed adequate chemical stability against CO2 and H2O, which is promising for application in fuel cells.

The ligand bis(diphenylphosphino) isopropylamine (dppipa) has been shown to be a versatile ligand sporting different coordination modes and geometries dictated by copper(I). Most of the molecular structures were confirmed by X-ray crystallography. It is found in a chelating mode, in a monomeric complex when the ligand to copper ratio is 2:1. A tetrameric complex is formed when low ratios of ligand to metal (1: 2) were used. But with increasing ratios of ligand to metal (1: 1 and 2: 1), a trimer or a dimer was obtained depending on the crystallization conditions. Variable temperature P-31{H-1} NMR spectra of these complexes in solution showed that the Cu-P bond was labile and the highly strained 4-membered structure chelate found in the solid state readily converted to a bridged structures. On the other hand, complexes with the ligand in a bridging mode in the solid state did not form chelated structures in solution. The effect of adding tetra-alkylammonium salts to solutions of various complexes of dppipa were probed by P-31{H-1} NMR and revealed the effect of counter ions on the stability of complexes in solution. A solvothermal reaction of Al2O3, H3BO3, pyridine, and H2O at 180 degrees C/7 days in the presence of organic amine molecules gave rise to four new aluminoborates, [(C6H18N2)(AlB6O13H3)], I; [(C5H16N2) (AlB5O10)]center dot 2H(2)O, II; [(C5H16N2)-(AlB5O10)], III; and [(C5H17N3)(AlB5O10)] center dot H2O, IV, with two- and three-dimensional structures. All the structures have been formed by the connectivity involving Al3+ ions and [B5O10] cyclic pentaborate units. In 1, the 3-connected trigonal nodes form a layer that resembles a graphite structure has been observed. The compounds II, III, and IV, have 4-connected nodes that forms a diamond related three-dimensional structure. The formation of solvatomorphs in II and III is noteworthy and has been observed first time in a family of amine template aluminoborates. A comparison of the various aluminoborate structures reveals subtle relationships between the organic amines (length of the amines) and the final framework structures. The compounds have been characterized using a variety of techniques including IR, second-order optical behavior, and MAS NMR studies.

Isoquinoline was prepared through the Beckmann rearrangement of cinnamaldoxime over different H-zeolites, K-10 montmorillonite clay, amorphous SiO2–Al2O3 and γ-alumina under well-optimized conditions of temperature, weight hourly space velocity and catalyst loading. Cinnamaldoxime under ambient reaction conditions over the catalysts underwent migration of the anti-styryl moiety to electron deficient nitrogen (Beckmann rearrangement) followed by an intramolecular cyclization to yield isoquinoline. Cinnamo-nitrile (dehydration product) and cinnamaldehyde were formed as by-products. Isoquinoline formation was high on zeolite catalysts (ca. >86.5%) and mordenite (ca. 92.3%) was the most efficient in the series. Catalysts were susceptible for deactivation and the decrease in the percentage conversion of oxime with time is associated with a corresponding increase in the acid hydrolysis producing salicylaldehyde at later stages of the reaction. However, these catalysts retain activity considerably and can be recycled without loss of activity and change of product distribution.
Mixed saturated-unsaturated alkyl-chain assemblies: Solid solutions of zinc stearate and zinc oleate
Resumo:
The linear saturated stearic acid and the bent mono-unsaturated oleic acid do not mix and form solid solutions. However, the zinc salts of these acids can. From X-ray diffraction and DSC measurements we show that the layered zinc stearate and zinc oleate salts form a homogeneous solid solution at all composition ratios. The solid solutions exhibit a single melting endotherm, with the melting temperature varying linearly with composition but with the enthalpy change showing a minimum. By monitoring features in the infrared spectra that are characteristic of the global conformation of the hydrocarbon chain, and hence can distinguish between stearate and oleate chains, it is shown that solid solution formation is realized by the introduction of gauche defects in a fraction of the stearate chains that are then no longer linear. This fraction increases with oleate concentration. It has also been possible from the spectroscopic measurements to establish a quantitative relation between molecular conformational order and the thermodynamic enthalpy of melting of the solid solutions.

A class of conjugated molecules containing donor (thiophene) and acceptor (malononitrile) is synthesized by Knoevenagel condensation reaction between 2-(2,6-dimethy1-4H-pyran-4-ylidene) malononitrile and thiophene carbaldehyde containing two and three thiophene units. The resulting molecules are characterized by H-1 and C-13 NMR. We have performed UV-vis absorption, fluorescence, and cyclic voltammetry measurements on these materials. The spectroscopic and electrochemical measurements proved beyond doubt that these materials possess lowexcitation gap and are suitable for being an active material in various electronic devices. We have also performed electronic structure calculations using density functional theory (DFT) and INDO/SCI methods to characterize the ground and excited states of this class of molecules. These donor-acceptor molecules show a strong charge transfercharacter that increases with the increase in the number of thiophene rings coupled to the malononitrile acceptor moiety. We have also calculated the pi-coherence length, Stoke's shift, and effect of solvents on excited states for this class of molecules, Our theoretical values agree well with experimental results.

Fermentable components of municipal solid wastes (MSW) such as fruit and vegetable wastes (FVW), leaf litter, paddy straw, cane bagasse, cane trash and paper are generated in large quantities at various pockets of the city. These form potential feedstocks for decentralized biogas plants to be operated in the vicinity. We characterized the fermentation potential of six of the above MSW fractions for their suitability to be converted to biogas and anaerobic compost using the solid-state stratified bed (SSB) process in a laboratory study. FVW and leaf litter (papermulberry leaves) decomposed almost completely while paddy straw, sugarcane trash, sugarcane bagasse and photocopying paper decomposed to a lower extent. In the SSB process between 50-60% of the biological methane potential (BMP) could be realized. Observations revealed that the SSB process needs to be adapted differently for each of the feedstocks to obtain a higher gas recovery. Bagasse produced the largest fraction of anaerobic compost (fermentation residue) and has the potential for reuse in many ways.

The conformational properties of foldamers generated from alpha gamma hybrid peptide sequences have been probed in the model sequence Boc-Aib-Gpn-Aib-Gpn-NHMe. The choice of alpha-aminoisobutyryl (Aib) and gabapentin (Gpn) residues greatly restricts sterically accessible coil formational space. This model sequence was anticipated to be a short segment of the alpha gamma C-12 helix, stabilized by three successive 4 -> 1 hydrogen bonds, corresponding to a backbone-expanded analogue of the alpha polypeptide 3(10)-helix. Unexpectedly, three distinct crystalline polymorphs were characterized in the solid state by X-ray diffraction. In one form, two successive C-12 hydrogen bonds were obtained at the N-terminus, while a novel C-17 hydrogen-bonded gamma alpha gamma turn was observed at the C-terminus. In the other two polymorphs, isolated C-9 and C-7 hydrogen-bonded turns were observed at Gpn (2) and Gpn (4). Isolated C-12 and C-9 turns were also crystallographically established in the peptides Boc-Aib-Gpn-Aib-OMe and Boc-Gpn-Aib-NHMe, respectively. Selective line broadening of NH resonances and the observation of medium range NH(i)<-> NH(i+2) NOEs established the presence of conformational heterogeneity for the tetrapeptide in CDCl3 solution. The NMR results are consistent with the limited population of the continuous C-12 helix conformation. Lengthening of the (alpha gamma)(n) sequences in the nonapeptides Boc-Aib-Gpn-Aib-Gpn-Aib-Gpn-Aib-Gpn-Xxx (Xxx = Aib, Leu) resulted in the observation of all of the sequential NOEs characteristic of an alpha gamma C-12 helix. These results establish that conformational fragility is manifested in short hybrid alpha gamma sequences despite the choice of conformationally constrained residues, while stable helices are formed on chain extension.
