Cette thèse traite de la chimie des complexes pinces de Ni(II) ainsi que des complexes cyclométallés de Ni(II) comportant au moins un motif phosphinite. Elle se divise en trois parties. La première concerne la synthèse, la caractérisation, le mécanisme de formation et la réactivité des complexes pinces de Ni(II) à base de ligand de type POCOP 1,3-(i-Pr2PO)2C6H4. De nouveaux ligands de type R-(POCOP) = κP,κC,κP-{Rn-2,6-( R'2PO)2C6H4-n}; Rn = 4-OMe, 4-Me, 4-CO2Me, 3-OMe, 3- CO2Me, 3,5-t-Bu2 ; R' = i-Pr, t-Bu ont été synthétisés suite à l'addition de chlorophosphine ClPR'2 à une solution de résorcinol ou dérivés en présence de base. La synthèse des complexes R-(POCOP)Ni(Br) s'effectue à partir du ligand correspondant en présence de base, et de {NiBr2(NCiPr)}n. Ce nouveau précurseur de nickel est synthétisé à partir de brome de nickel métallique dans l'isobutyronitrile. Il est stable sous atmosphère inerte et sa solubilité dans les solvants polaires permet d'étudier les synthèses des complexes en milieu homogène. Le mécanisme de formation des complexes portant des ligand pinces (PCsp3P) 1,3-(i- Pr2PCH2CH2)2CH2, (POCsp3OP) 1,3-(i-Pr2POCH2)2CH2, (PCsp2P) 1,3-(i- Pr2PCH2)2C6H4, Rn-(POCsp2OP) 1,3-(i-Pr2PO)2C6H4-n via nickellation du lien C-H a été investigué avec une méthode de réaction de com©tition. Cette étape a été déterminée comme étant de nature électrophile. Les complexes résultants ont été complètement caractérisés. Une corrélation a notamment été effectuée entre le déplacement chimique du Cipso en spectroscopie RMN 13C et le potentiel d'oxydation Eox en voltamétrie cyclique. Une nouvelle méthode de synthèse directe verte "one pot" a été mise en place. En faisant réagir à 75 °C un mélange hétérogène de II résorcinol, de chlorodiisopropylphosphine et de nickel métallique en poudre, on obtient le complexes pince (POCOP)Ni(Cl) avec des rendements allant jusqu'à 93%. La réactivité de ces complexes POCOP a été investiguée pour des réactions de fluorination et trifluorométhylation des halogénures d'alkyle. La synthèse du (POCOP)Ni(F) a lieu à partir de précurseur (POCOP)Ni(X) (X=Br, Cl), en présence d'un large excès de fluorure d'argent AgF. Ce complexe catalyse la fluorination du bromure de benzyle et peut être converti en (POCOP)Ni(CF3) en présence de réactif du Ruppert, Me3SiCF3. La réaction entre (POCOP)Ni(CF3) et le bromure de benzyle dans les solvants aromatiques mène à la conversion totale du complexe en (POCOP)Ni(Br) et à l'inattendue benzylation du solvant aromatique utilisé. La seconde partie concerne la synthèse des nouveaux complexes non symétriques à base de ligands comportant un motif imidazolo-phosphine (PIMCOP) 3-[2-(R2P)-C3H2N2]-(R2PO)-C6H3, imidazoliophosphine (PIMIOCOP) 3-[2-(R2P)-3- (CH3)-C3H2N2]-(R2PO)-C6H3] et carbène N-hétérocyclique (NHCCOP). La double déprotonation du 3-hydroxyphenyl-imidazole suivi de l'addition de deux équivalents de chlorodiphenylphosphine mène à l'obtention du ligand PIMCOP 3-[3-(CH3)- C3H2N2]-(R2PO)-C6H3. L'étape de nickellation a lieu comme dans le cas des composés (POCOP)Ni. La méthylation du motif imidazole du (PIMCOP)Ni(Br) par le triflate de méthyle MeOTf, donne le dérivé (PIMIOCOP)Ni(Br). Ce dernier est converti en (NHCCOP)Ni(Br) après l'addition de chlorure de tétraéthylamonium NEt4Cl. Les analogues i-Pr2P de ces complexes sont synthétisés en remplaçant ClPPh2 par ClPiPr2. On obtient les es¨ces cationiques [(PIMCOP)Ni(NCCH3)][OTf], [(PIMIOCOP)Ni(NCCH3)][OTf]2 et III [(NHCCOP)Ni(NCCH3)][OTf] suite à l'addition en solution dans l'acétonitrile de triflate d'argent AgOTf. Ces es¨ces ont été utilisés comme catalyseurs pour la synthèse d'amidine à partir de benzonitrile et de diverse amines aliphatiques. Enfin des complexes orthonickellés trans-Ni[(ĸ2-P,C-P(OC6H4)-(iPr2)( iPr2P(OC6H5))]Br à base de phosphinite ont été synthétisés et caractérisés. Les ligands sont synthétisés par réaction d'un phénol et de chlorodiisopropylphosphine en présence de base. L'ajout de {NiBr2(NCiPr)}n et de triéthylamine permet l'orthométallation via une étape de nickellation C-H. Un intermédiaire trans- [NiBr2{PiPr2(OC6H5)}2] de cette réaction a été isolé. Le complexe dimère peut réagir avec des es¨ces électrophiles mener à l'ortho-fonctionnalisation de la phosphinite.

Biodiesel production using microalgae is attractive in a number of respects. Here a number of pros and cons to using microalgae for biofuels production are reviewed. Algal cultivation can be carried out using non-arable land and non-potable water with simple nutrient supply. In addition, algal biomass productivities are much higher than those of vascular plants and the extractable content of lipids that can be usefully converted to biodiesel, triacylglycerols (TAGs) can be much higher than that of the oil seeds now used for first generation biodiesel. On the other hand, practical, cost-effective production of biofuels from microalgae requires that a number of obstacles be overcome. These include the development of low-cost, effective growth systems, efficient and energy saving harvesting techniques, and methods for oil extraction and conversion that are environmentally benign and cost-effective. Promising recent advances in these areas are highlighted.

The use of industrial wastes rich in mineral nutrients and carbon sources to increase the final microalgal biomass and lipid yield at a low cost is an important strategy to make algal biofuel technology viable. Using strains from the microalgal collection of the Université de Montréal, this report shows for the first time that microalgal strains can be grown on xylose, the major carbon source found in wastewater streams from pulp and paper industries, with an increase in growth rate of 2.8 fold in comparison to photoautotrophic growth, reaching up to µ=1.1/day. On glycerol, growth rates reached as high as µ=1.52/day. Lipid productivity increased up to 370% on glycerol and 180% on xylose for the strain LB1H10, showing the suitability of this strain for further development for biofuels production through mixotrophic cultivation.

A recently established strain collection of freshwater microalgae native to Quebec was examined for physiological diversity. The 100 strains appeared very heterogeneous in terms of growth when they were cultured at 10±2 °C or 22±2 °C on the secondary effluent from a municipal wastewater treatment plant (WW) and defined BBM medium. Scatterplots were used to examine the diversity in physiology that might be present in the collection. These showed a number of interesting results. There was a fair amount of dispersion in growth rates by media type independent of temperature. Surprisingly considering that all the isolates had been initially enriched on BBM, the distribution was quite symmetrical around the iso-growth line, suggesting that enrichment on BBM did not seem to bias the cells for growth on this medium versus WW. As well, considering that all the isolates had been initially enriched at 22 °C, it is quite surprising that the distribution of specific growth rates was quite symmetrical around the iso-growth line with roughly equal numbers of isolates found on either side. Thus enrichment at 22 °C does not seem to bias the cells for growth at this temperature versus 10°C. The scatterplots obtained when the percentage lipid of cultures grown on BBM were compared with cultures grown on WW at either 10 °C or 22 °C made it apparent that lipid production was favored by growth on WW at either temperature and that lipid production does not seem to be particularly favored by one temperature over the other. When the collection was queried for differences with respect to sampling location, statistical analysis showed that roughly the same degree of physiological diversity was found with samples from the two different aggregate locations.

The present work is a base line attempt to investigate and assess the toxicities of three surfactants viz. anionic sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), non ionic Triton X-1OO (TX-IOO) and cationic cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB). These compounds represent simple members of the often neglected group of aquatic pollutants i.e. the anionic alkyl sulfates, non ionics and the cationics. These compounds are widely used In plastic industry, pesticide/herbicide formulations, detergents, oil spill dispersants, molluscicides etc. The test organisms selected for the present study are the cyanobacterium Synechocystis salina Wislouch representing a primary producer in the marine environment and a fresh water adapted euryhaline teleost Oreochromis mossambicus (peters) at the consumer level of the ecological pyramid. The fish species, though not indigenous to our country, is now found ubiquitously in fresh water systems and estuaries. Also it is highly resistant to pollutants and has been suggested as an indicator of pollution in tropical region .

Design of a compact microstrip band reject filter is proposed. The device consists of an Open Loop Rectangular Resonator (OLRR) coupled to a microstrip line. The transmission line has a U-bend which enhances the coupling with the OLRR element and reduces the size of the filter. The filter can be made tunable by mounting variable capacitance to the system. Simulated and experimental results are presented.

A compact, planar, wideband antenna designed by modifying the coplanar waveguide is presented in this letter. The proposed antenna finds a wide range of applications including advanced wireless systems (AWS), DCS-1800, DCS-1900/PCS/PHS, WiBro, BlueTooth/WLAN/WiBree/ZigBee, DMB, Global Star Satellite Phones, and digital cordless phones. Wide bandwidth > 75% centered at 2.50 GHz, quasi-omnidirectional radiation coverage along with moderate gain and efficiency are the salient features of the antenna. A prototype fabricated on a substrate with dielectric constant 4.4 and thickness 1.6 mm occupies an area of (31times 64) mm2. Details of antenna design and discussions on the effect of various antenna parameters on the radiation characteristics are presented.

The present investigation revealed three types of circulating haemocytes in the haemolymph of F. indicus: hyalinocytes, small-granule haemocytes, and large-granule haemocytes. Intermediate stages indicate the maturing process of a single cell. The presence of enzymes such as peroxidase, phenoloxidase and acid phosphatase in the haemocytes, and the substantial production of oxygen radicals during phagocytosis show that the haemocytes are capable of mounting a fme cellular defense mechanism. The enzyme activities of the serum and the presence of agglutinins in the serum, which may act as opsonins, agglutinate foreign particles and augment phagocytosis, confirm the presence of a superior humoral immune system in F. indicus.Bacterial infection caused considerable variations in the cellular and humoral factors, such as the number of circulating cells and haemagglutinating activity, especially in the initial hours of infection. The total haemocyte count, haemagglutination titer and phenoloxidase enzyme showed significant reductions on bacterial presence and could be used as indicators of bacterial infection.The number of circulating cells showed drastic fluctuation on exposure to pollutants. Nuvan at low concentrations was able to produce changes in the haemolymph factors and in the tissue organization, which implies that the animal is under stress and is easily prone to infections. Exposure to nuvan resulted in significant variation in all of the cellular and humoral factors, especially, the total haemocyte count, percentage of small granule haemocytes, phagocytic activity and the haemagglutinating activity, which might be good indicators of pesticide pollution. Heavy metal exposure caused significant increase in total haemocyte count and reduction in phenoloxidase enzyme activity Even changes in the physio-chemical parameters, such as salinity caused fluctuations in the defense factors, indicating stress in this euryhaline species. The dietary incorporation of a commercial immunostimulant containing P-l,3 glucan resulted in stimulation of some of the humoral defense factors of F indicus, but was time dependent. The modulations, on exposure to various external factors, in the cellular and humoral factors, especially, total haemocyte count, phagocytic activity, haemagglutinating activity and the phenoloxidase and acid phosphatase enzymes suggest that these parameters could be used as indicators of the health status of F indicus, which assist in better monitoring and effective health management of this important cultured species.

This work was focused to study the immobilization of enzymes on polymers. A large range of polymer matrices have been employed as supports for enzyme immobilization. Here polyaniline (PAN!) and poly(0~toluidine) (POT) were used as supports. PANI and POT provides an excellent support for enzyme immobilization by virtue of its facile synthesis, superior chemical and physical stabilities, and large retention capacity. We selected industrially important starch hydrolyzing enzymes a-amylase and glucoamylase for the study. In this work the selected enzymes were immobilized via adsorption and covalent bonding methods.To optimize the catalytic efficiency and stability of the resulting biocatalysts, the attempt was made to understand the immobilization effects on enzymatic properties. The effect of pH of the immobilization medium, time of immobilization on the immobilization efficiency was observed. The starch hydrolyzing activity of free 0:-amylase and glucoamylase were compared with immobilized forms. Immobilization on solid supports changes the microenvironment of the enzyme there by influences the pH and temperature relationship on the enzymatic activity. Hence these parameters also optimized. The reusability and storage stability of immobilized enzymes an important aspect from an application standpoint, especially in industrial applications. Taking in to consideration of this, the reusability and the long tenn storage stability of the immobilized enzyme investigated.

A planar monopole antenna suitable for broadband wireless communication is designed and developed. With the use of a truncated ground plane, the proposed printed monopole antenna offers nearly 60% 2:1 VSWR bandwidth and good radiation characteristics for the frequencies across the operating band. A parametric study of the antenna is performed based on the optimized design, and a prototype of the antenna suitable for 2.4-GHz WLAN application is presented. The antenna can be easily integrated into wireless circuitry and is convenient for application in laptop computers.

The specific objectives of the study are to assess the effectiveness of the various personnel management practices followed in the cooperative sector, to analyse the nature and extent of compensating the employees in co—operatives, to measure the level of job satisfaction derived by the employees, to evaluate the industrial relations existing in the co-operative organizations and to suggest, if found necessary, ways and means of toning up the personnel management practices followed in the co-operative sector in Kerala

Prevalence of faecal coliform bacteria and the survival of Escherichia coli, Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Salmonella paratyphi were studied in the water and sediment from Vembanadu Lake in the presence and absence of protozoan predators. The density of faecal coliform bacteria ranged between mean MPN value 5080–9000/100 ml in water and 110,000–988,000/1 g in sediment (p <0.01), which was 110 times greater than in overlying water. The laboratory microcosm studies revealed that E. coli, V. parahaemolyticus and S. paratyphi showed significantly higher survival (p <0.05) potential in sediment than in overlying water both in the presence and absence of protozoan predators. The results indicate that Vembanadu Lake sediment constitutes a reservoir of pathogenic bacteria and exhibits potential health hazard from possible resuspension and subsequent ingestion during recreational activities. Therefore, assessment of bacterial concentration in freshwater lake sediments used for contact and non-contact recreation is of considerable significance for the proper assessment of microbial pollution of the overlying water and the management and protection of related health risk at specific recreational sites. In addition, assessment of the bacterial concentration in sediments can be used as a relatively stable indicator of long-term mean bacterial concentration in the water column above.

There are a number of genes involved in the regulation of functional process in marine bivalves. In the case of pearl oyster, some of these genes have major role in the immune/defence function and biomineralization process involved in the pearl formation in them. As secondary filter feeders, pearl oysters are exposed to various kinds of stressors like bacteria, viruses, pesticides, industrial wastes, toxic metals and petroleum derivatives, making susceptible to diseases. Environmental changes and ambient stress also affect non-specific immunity, making the organisms vulnerable to infections. These stressors can trigger various cellular responses in the animals in their efforts to counteract the ill effects of the stress on them. These include the expression of defence related genes which encode factors such as antioxidant genes, pattern recognition receptor proteins etc. One of the strategies to combat these problems is to get insight into the disease resistance genes, and use them for disease control and health management. Similarly, although it is known that formation of pearl in molluscs is mediated by specialized proteins which are in turn regulated by specific genes encoding them, there is a paucity of sufficient information on these genes.In view of the above facts, studies on the defence related and pearl forming genes of the pearl oyster assumes importance from the point of view of both sustainable fishery management and aquaculture. At present, there is total lack of sufficient knowledge on the functional genes and their expressions in the Indian pearl oyster Pinctada fucata. Hence this work was taken up to identify and characterize the defence related and pearl forming genes, and study their expression through molecular means, in the Indian pearl oyster Pinctada fucata which are economically important for aquaculture at the southeast coast of India. The present study has successfully carried out the molecular identification, characterization and expression analysis of defence related antioxidant enzyme genes and pattern recognition proteins genes which play vital role in the defence against biotic and abiotic stressors. Antioxidant enzyme genes viz., Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase (Cu/Zn SOD), glutathione peroxidise (GPX) and glutathione-S-transferase (GST) were studied. Concerted approaches using the various molecular tools like polymerase chain reaction (PCR), random amplification of cDNA ends (RACE), molecular cloning and sequencing have resulted in the identification and characterization of full length sequences (924 bp) of the Cu/Zn SOD, most important antioxidant enzyme gene. BLAST search in NCBI confirmed the identity of the gene as Cu/Zn SOD. The presence of the characteristic amino acid sequences such as copper/zinc binding residues, family signature sequences and signal peptides were found out. Multiple sequence alignment comparison and phylogenetic analysis of the nucleotide and amino acid sequences using bioinformatics tools like BioEdit,MEGA etc revealed that the sequences were found to contain regions of diversity as well as homogeneity. Close evolutionary relationship between P. fucata and other aquatic invertebrates was revealed from the phylogenetic tree constructed using SOD amino acid sequence of P. fucata and other invertebrates as well as vertebrates
