Polyurethane composites reinforced with curaua fiber at 5, 10 and 20% mass/mass proportions were prepared by using the conventional melt-mixing method. The influence of curaua fibers on the thermal behavior and polymer cohesiveness in polyurethane matrix was evaluated by dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) and by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). This specific interaction between the fibers and the hard segment domain was influenced by the behavior of the storage modulus E` and the loss modulus EaEuro(3) curves. The polyurethane PU80 is much stiffer and resistant than the other composites at low temperatures up to 70A degrees C. All samples were thermoplastic and presented a rubbery plateau over a wide temperature range above the glass transition temperature and a thermoplastic flow around 170A degrees C.

A multiphase deterministic mathematical model was implemented to predict the formation of the grain macrostructure during unidirectional solidification. The model consists of macroscopic equations of energy, mass, and species conservation coupled with dendritic growth models. A grain nucleation model based on a Gaussian distribution of nucleation undercoolings was also adopted. At some solidification conditions, the cooling curves calculated with the model showed oscillations (""wiggles""), which prevented the correct prediction of the average grain size along the structure. Numerous simulations were carried out at nucleation conditions where the oscillations are absent, enabling an assessment of the effect of the heat transfer coefficient on the average grain size and columnar-to-equiaxed transition.

The electrochemical behaviour of a near-beta Ti-13Nb-13Zr alloy for the application as implants was investigated in various solutions. The electrolytes used were 0.9 wt% NaCl solution, Hanks` solution and a culture medium known as minimum essential medium (MEM) composed of salts, vitamins and amino acids, all at 37 degrees C. The electrochemical behaviour was investigated by the following electrochemical techniques: open circuit potential measurements as a function of time, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and determination of polarisation curves. The obtained results showed that the Ti alloy was passive in all electrolytes. The EIS results were analysed using an equivalent electrical circuit representing a duplex structure oxide layer, composed of an inner barrier layer, mainly responsible for the alloy corrosion resistance, and an outer and porous layer that has been associated to osteointegration ability. The properties of both layers were dependent on the electrolyte used. The results suggested that the thickest porous layer is formed in the MEM solution whereas the impedance of the barrier layer formed in this solution was the lowest among the electrolytes used. The polarisation curves showed a current increase at potentials around 1300 mV versus saturated calomel electrode (SCE), and this increase was also dependent on the electrolyte used. The highest increase in current density was also associated to the MEM solution suggesting that this is the most aggressive electrolyte to the Ti alloy among the three tested solutions.

The aim of this work is to study MnO reduction by solid carbon. The influence of size of carbon particles, slag basicity, and bath temperature on MnO reduction was investigated. Fine Manganese ore particles were used as a source of MnO. Three sizes of carbon particles were used; 0.230 mm, 0.162 mm and 0.057 mm, binary basicity of 1 and 1.5 and temperatures of 1550, 1550 and 1600 degrees C. Curves were drawn for Mn content in the bath as a function of time and temperature for the several studied parameters. The MnO reduction rates were determined using these data. In this work, the rheological behavior of block copolymers with different morphologies (lamellar, cylindrical, spherical, and disordered) and their clay-containing nanocomposites was studied using small amplitude oscillatory shear. The copolymers studied were one asymmetric starblock styrene-butadiene-styrene copolymer and four styrene-ethylene/butylenes-styrene copolymers with different molecular architectures, one of them being modified with maleic anhydride. The nanocomposites of those copolymers were prepared by adding organophilic clay using three different preparation techniques: melt mixing, solution casting, and a hybrid melt mixing-solution technique. The nanocomposites were characterized by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy, and their viscoelastic properties were evaluated and compared to the ones of the pure copolymers. The influence of copolymer morphology and presence of clay on the storage modulus (G`) curves was studied by the evaluation of the changes in the low frequency slope of log G` x log omega (omega: frequency) curves upon variation of temperature and clay addition. This slope may be related to the degree of liquid- or solid-like behavior of a material. It was observed that at temperatures corresponding to the ordered state, the rheological behavior of the nanocomposites depended mainly on the viscoelasticity of each type of ordered phase and the variation of the slope due to the addition of clay was small. For temperatures corresponding to the disordered state, however, the rheological behavior of the copolymer nanocomposites was dictated mostly by the degree of clay dispersion: When the clay was well dispersed, a strong solid-like behavior corresponding to large G` slope variations was observed.

Cold-rolled (0-19% of reduction) 0.5% Si electrical steel sheets were studied in detail, including macro and micro residual stress measurements, crystallographic texture, dc-hysteresis curves and iron losses. Even for the smallest deformation, losses increase significantly, with large increase of the hysteresis losses, whereas the anomalous losses reduce slightly. The residual microstresses are similar to 150-350 MPa, whereas residual macrostresses are compressive, similar to 50 MPa. The large increase of the hysteresis losses is attributed to the residual microstresses. The dislocation density estimated by X-ray diffraction is in reasonable agreement with that predicted from the Sablik et al. model for effect of plastic deformation on hysteresis. The intensity of the texture fibers {1 1 1}< u v w > and < 110 >//RD (RD = rolling direction) increases with the reduction. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The cost of a new ship design heavily depends on the principal dimensions of the ship; however, dimensions minimization often conflicts with the minimum oil outflow (in the event of an accidental spill). This study demonstrates one rational methodology for selecting the optimal dimensions and coefficients of form of tankers via the use of a genetic algorithm. Therein, a multi-objective optimization problem was formulated by using two objective attributes in the evaluation of each design, specifically, total cost and mean oil outflow. In addition, a procedure that can be used to balance the designs in terms of weight and useful space is proposed. A genetic algorithm was implemented to search for optimal design parameters and to identify the nondominated Pareto frontier. At the end of this study, three real ships are used as case studies. This work investigates the influence of the addition of cerium (IV) ions on the anticorrosion properties of organic-inorganic hybrid coatings applied to passivated tin coated steel. In order to evaluate the specific effect of cerium (IV) addition on nanostructural features of the organic and inorganic phases of the hybrid coating, the hydrolytic polycondensation of silicon alkoxide and the radical polymerization of the methyl methacrylate (MMA) function were induced separately. The corrosion resistance of the coatings was evaluated by means of linear polarization, Tafel type curves and electrochemical impedance measurements. The impedance results obtained for the hybrid coatings were discussed based on an electrical equivalent circuit used to fit the experimental data. The electrochemical results clearly showed the improvement of the protective properties of the organic-inorganic hybrid coating mainly when the cerium (IV) was added to the organic phase solution precursor, which seemed to be due to the formation of a more uniform and densely reticulated siloxane-PMMA film. This article reports experimental results obtained in a laboratory-scale photochemical reactor on the photodegradation of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) in aqueous solutions by means of the photo-Fenton and H(2)O(2)/UV processes. Dilute water solutions of PEG were fed to a batch reactor, mixed with pertinent reactants, and allowed to react under different conditions. Reaction progress was evaluated by sampling and analyzing the concentration of the total organic carbon (TOC) in solution as a function of the reaction time. Organic acids formed during oxidation were determined by HPLC analyses. The main acids detected in both processes were acetic and formic. Glycolic acid was detected only in the photo-Fenton process, and malonic acid was detected only in the H(2)O(2)/UV treatment, indicating that different reaction paths occur in these processes. The characteristics of both processes are discussed, based on the evolution of the TOC-time curves and the concentration profiles of the monitored organic acids. The experimental results constitute a contribution to the design of industrial processes for the treatment of wastewaters containing soluble polymers with similar properties.

In this work, a study on the role of the long-range term of excess Gibbs energy models in the modeling of aqueous systems containing polymers and salts is presented. Four different approaches on how to account for the presence of polymer in the long-range term were considered, and simulations were conducted considering aqueous solutions of three different salts. The analysis of water activity curves showed that, in all cases, a liquid-phase separation may be introduced by the sole presence of the polymer in the long-range term, regardless of how it is taken into account. The results lead to the conclusion that there is no single exact solution for this problem, and that any kind of approach may introduce inconsistencies.

This article describes a study of the behavior of a mixture of amines and amides, commercially known as Dodigen 213-N (D-213 N), as a corrosion inhibitor for ASTM 1010 mild steel in 10% w/w HCl solution. The concentration range used was 1 x 10(-5) M to 8 x 10(-4) M. The weight loss and electrochemical techniques used were corrosion potential measurement, anodic and cathodic polarization curves, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The solution temperature was 50 +/- A 1 A degrees C and it was naturally aerated. The corrosion potential values shifted to slightly more positive values, thus indicating mixed inhibitor behavior. The anodic and cathodic polarization curves showed that D-213 N is an effective corrosion inhibitor, since both the anodic and the cathodic reactions were polarized in comparison with those obtained without inhibitor. For all concentrations the cathodic polarization curves were more polarized than the anodic ones. The inhibition efficiency was in the range 75-98%, calculated from values of weight loss and corrosion current density, i (corr), obtained by extrapolation of Tafel cathodic linear region.

In this paper, the performance of bis-1, 2-(triethoxysilyl) ethane (BTSE) as a pre-treatment to protect the AA 2024-T3 against corrosion has been investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), potentiodynamic polarization curves, and the scanning vibrating electrode technique (SVET). The microstructural and morphological characterizations were carried out via scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy and the chemical composition evaluated using contact angle measurements and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The electrochemical results showed that the additives improved the anticorrosion properties of the coating. The chemical characterization indicated that additives contribute to an increased degree of surface coverage, as well as to a more complete reticulation. The SVET results evidenced the self-healing abilities of Ce ions. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this work, the effect of cerium (IV) ammonium nitrate (CAN) addition on the polymerization of bis-[triethoxysilyl]ethane (BTSE) film applied on carbon steel was studied. The electrochemical characterization of the films was carried out in 0.1 mol L(-1) NaCl solution by open-circuit potential measurements, anodic and cathodic polarization curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Morphological and chemical characterization were performed by atomic force microscopy (AFM), contact angle measurements, infrared-spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance and thermogravimetric analysis. The results have clearly shown the improvement on the protective properties of the Ce(4+) modified film as a consequence of the formation of a more uniform and densely reticulated silane film. A mechanism is proposed to explain the accelerating role of Ce(4+) ions on the cross-linking of the silane layer. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This paper presents the results of experiments carried out in a laboratory-scale photochemical reactor on the photodegradation of different polymers in aqueous solutions by the photo-Fenton process. Solutions of three polymers, polyethyleneglicol (PEG), polyacrylamide (PAM), and polyvinylpyrrolidone(PVP), were tested under different. conditions. The reaction progress was evaluated by sampling and analyzing the total organic carbon concentration in solution (TOC) along the reaction time. The behavior of the different polymers is discussed, based oil the evolution of the TOC-time curves. Under specific reaction conditions, the formation and coalescence of solid particles was Visually observed. Solids formation occurred simultaneously to a sharp decrease in the TOC of the liquid phase. This may be favorable for the treatment of industrial wastewater containing polymers, since the photodegradation process can be Coupled with solid separation systems. which may reduce the treatment cost. The electrochemical behaviour of carbon steel coated with bis-[trimethoxysilylpropyl]amine (BTSPA) filled with silica nanoparticles in naturally aerated 0.1 mol L-1 NaCl solutions was evaluated. The coating was prepared by adding different concentrations of silica nanoparticles (100, 200, 300, 400 and 500 ppm) to the hydrolysis solution and then a second layer without silica nanoparticles was applied. The electrochemical behavior of the coated steel was evaluated by means of open-circuit potential (E-OC), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and polarization curves. Surface characterization was made by atomic force microscopy (AFM), and its hydrophobicity assessed by contact angle measurements. EIS diagrams have shown an improvement of the barrier properties of the silane layer with the silica addition, which was further improved on the bi-layer system. However, a dependence on the filler concentration was verified, and the best electrochemical response was obtained for samples modified with 300 ppm of silica nanoparticles. AFM images have shown a homogeneous distribution of the silica nanoparticles on the sample surface; however particles agglomeration was detected, which degraded the corrosion protection performance. The results were explained on the basis of the improvement of the barrier properties of the coating due to the filler addition and on the onset of defective regions on the more heavily filled coatings allowing easier electrolyte penetration.
