Themorphologies and structures of single crystals of syndiotactic poly(propene-co-1-butene) (PPBU) with 1-butene contents of 2.6, 4.2, 9.9, 16.2, and 47.9 mol % are studied by transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction. The electron diffraction results show that the 1-butene units are included in the crystalline phase of the sPP homopolymer. A small amount of 1-butene (<4.2 mol %) has no significant influence on the antichiral chain packing of sPP. With increasing content of 1-butene units, an increasing packing disorder is observed in the PPBU copolymers. The antichiral packing model is, however, always the predominant chain packing structure of the copolymers with the analyzed composition. Bright-field electron microscopy observation shows that the PPBU single crystals exhibit always regular rectangular or lathlike shapes with preferred growth direction along their crystallographic b-axes owing to their packing features. The incorporated 1-butene units influence the crystallization behavior of sPP distinctly. With the increase of the 1-butene units, the aspect ratio of the single crystals increases. Furthermore, the typical transverse microcracks and ripples of the highly stereoregular sPP are no more so prominent for the copolymers. The microcracks are occasionally observed in the single crystals of copolymers with low 1-butene content (less than or equal to4.2 mol %), while transverse ripples are only seen in the crystals of the copolymer having a 1-butene content of 9.9 mol %. With a further increase in the content of 1-butene units, the copolymers behave like the low stereoregular sPP, where neither cracks nor ripples are observed any more.

Naphthalene-labeled polypropylene (PP) was prepared by melt reaction of maleic anhydride-grafted-polypropylene (PP-g-MA) with 1-aminonaphthalene in a Barabender mixer chamber. The structure of the product was analyzed with fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), ultraviolet (UV) and fluorescence. The results showed that naphthyl groups grafted onto the PP molecular chains through the imide bonds formed between MA and 1-aminonaphthalene. The content of the chromophores was 1.8 X 10(-4) mol g(-1) measured by elemental analysis. Isothermal crystallization behavior was studied by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). Labeled PP had a higher crystallization rate than PP-g-MA. Wide-angle X-Ray diffraction (WAXD) analysis revealed that labeled PP had higher crystallinity than PP-g-MA.

Heterogeneous electron transfer rate constants (k(s)) and diffusion coefficients (D) of the ferrocene and its derivatives. in a new synthetic comb polymer solvent, poly(dimethylsiloxane-g-monomethylether polyethylene glycol) (SCP), and several other polymer solvents were estimated by using microelectrodes. Also, the influence of various supporting electrolytes on k(s) and D of ferrocene was studied. It was shown that k(s) and D of ferrocene decreased with increasing anionic size of the supporting electrolyte, but k(s) tended to increase with increasing radius of the solvated cation. Also, the cationic size of the supporting electrolytes had little effects on D. The values of k(s) and D for the ferrocene derivatives in the polymer solvents were in sharp contrast to those in monomeric solvents. Thus. the k(s) values were proportional to D in the polymer solvents. which indicates that solvent dynamics control of the electrode reaction. The values of k(s) and D of ferrocene in SCP were larger than those in other polymer solvents indicating that SCP is a good polymer solvent. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Rare earth complex Eu(phen)(2)Cl-3 was introduced into a SiO2-PEG-400 hybrid material by a sol-ger method. The result indicated that Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) could associate with Eu3+ and change the surroundings of Eu3+ in the hybrid material, greatly improving the decay time. Transparent SiO2-PEG400 hybrid doped with a very small amount of Eu(phen)(2)Cl-3 has better mechanical properties and can retain excellent luminescence properties of the rare earth complex. Using poly(styrene-co-maleic anhydride) as the backbone and poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether as side chains, three kinds of comblike polymers of different side chain length were synthesized. The Li-salt complexes and their firms were prepared. The dynamic mechanical properties were investigated. It was found that the main chain was rigid and the side chain was flexible in this comblike polymer system. Based on the time-temperature equivalence principle, a master curve was constructed. By selecting T-alpha as reference temperature, Arrhenius plots of shift factor and iso-free-volume plots were attained. The values of WLF parameters C-1 and C-2 increase with increasing salt concentration. By reference to T-0 = 50 degrees C, the relation between the average relaxation time 1g tau(c) and Li-salt concentration C is linear. The master curves are displaced progressively to higher frequencies as the M-w of side chains is increased. The relation between the average relaxation time 1g tau(n) and M-w of side chains is also linear. And the master curves are movable with the change of salts. It shows the effect of different kinds of salt on relaxation time.

The toughness of polypropylene (PP)/ethylene-propylene-diene monomer rubber (EPDM) blends containing various EPDM contents as a function of the tensile speed was studied. The toughness of the blends was determined from the tensile fracture energy of the side-edge notched samples. A sharp brittle-tough transition was observed in the fracture energy versus interparticle distance (ID) curves when the crosshead speed < 102.4 mm/min. It was observed that the brittle-ductile transition of PP/EPDM blend occurred either by reducing ID or by decreasing the tensile speed. The correlation between the critical interparticle distance and tensile deformation rate was compared with that between the critical interparticle distance and temperature for PP/EPDM blends. A composite solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) of (PEO)(10)LiClO4-Al2O3 was prepared and Pt and stainless steel(SS) blocking electrodes were used for an impedance study. It was found that the semicircle in the high frequency range and the straight line in the low frequency range depend upon different blocking electrodes and polarization potentials applied in the experiments. In the equivalent circuit. two constant phase elements (CPE) have been used instead of the pure geometrical and double layer capacitances. respectively. A theoretical line calculated from their estimated values has a good correlation with the experiment data. Moreover. the equivalent circuit also can be used to explain the impedance properties of Pt and stainless steel (SS) blocking electrodes both in the high and the low frequency ranges. Using poly(styrene-co-maleic anhydride) as a backbone and poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether (PEGME) with different molecular weights as side chains, three comb-like polymers and their Li salt complexes were synthesized. The dynamic mechanical properties and conductivities were investigated. Results showed that the polymer electrolytes possess two glass transitions: alpha -transition and beta -transition, and the temperature dependence of the ionic conductivity shows WLF (Williams-Landel-Ferry) behavior. Based on the time-temperature equivalence principle, a master curve was constructed by selecting T-beta as reference temperature. The values of the WLF parameters (C-1 and C-2) were obtained and were found to be almost independent of the length of the PEGME side chain and the content of Li salt. By reference to T-0 = 50 degreesC. the relation between log tau (c) and c was found to be linear. The master curves are displaced progressively to higher frequencies as the molecular weight of the side chain is increased. The relation between log tau (n) and the molecular weight of the side chain is also linear. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Polyaniline (PAn) was doped with phosphonic acid containing hydrophilic tails. The solubility of the doped PAn in water was controlled by changing the length of hydrophilic chain in the dopant. When poly(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether (PEGME) with molecular weight M-w = 550 was used as the hydrophilic chain of the dopant, the doped PAn was entirely soluble in water. The film cast from aqueous solution showed good electrochemical redox reversibility, Aqueous solution blending of PAn with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG, M-w = 20 000) and poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP, M-w = 360 000) was achieved. Percolation threshold of the composite film was lower than 3 wt.%. Electrical conductivity of the composite film was in the range of 10(-1)-10(-5) S cm(-1), depending on molecular weight of the acid and the content of PAn in the composite. We here present a versatile process for the preparation of maghemite/polyaniline (gamma-Fe2O3/ PAn) nanocomposite films with macroscopic processibility, electrical conductivity, and magnetic susceptibility. The gamma-Fe2O3 nanoparticles are coated and the PAn chains are doped by anionic surfactants of omega-methoxypoly(ethylene glycol) phosphate (PEOPA), 4-dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid (DBSA), and 10-camphorsulfonic acid (CSA). Both the coated gamma-Fe2O3 and the doped PAn are soluble in common organic solvents, and casting of the homogeneous solutions gives free-standing nanocomposite films with gamma-Fe2O3 contents up to similar to 50 wt %. The morphology of the gamma-Fe2O3 nanoparticles are characterized by transmission electron microscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy, and X-ray diffractometry. The gamma-Fe2O3/PAn films prepared from chloroform/m-cresol solutions of DBSA-coated gamma-Fe2O3 and CSA-doped PAn are conductive (sigma = 82-237 S/cm) and superpapamagnetic, exhibiting no hysteresis at room temperature. The zero-field-cooled magnetization experiment reveals that the nanocomposite containing 20.8 wt % gamma-Fe2O3 has a blocking temperature (T-b) in the temperature region of 63-83 K.

The effect of accelerated weather aging an ethylene-propylene-diene monomer(EPDM) rubber used for outdoor insulation was studied by surface roughness measurement and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(xps). The surface roughness of EPDM rubber changed with aging time. The surface oxygen and aluminum content were found to increase and that of carbon, silicon and nitrogen to decrease with time. The detailed XPS analysis indicated that the concentration of carbon in C-C decreased and that of highly oxidized carbons in C-O, C=O and O=C-O increased with time, which was due to the oxidation of EPDM rubber polymer. The appearance of O=C-O on the surface of EPDM rubber was a signal that EPDM rubber became aged. The aging speed decreased with time. The aging mechanism is discussed also.

Cyclic voltammetry and in-situ microscopic FTIR spectroelectrochemistry were used for the electrochemical and vibrational characterizations of the reduction process of K3Fe (CN)(6) in polyethylene glycol(PEG) with LiClO4 as supporting electrolyte at a Pt microelectrode. The rate of electron transfer is a function of the concentration of the supporting electrolyte. The redox potentials and cyclic voltammetric currents vary with Li/O molar ratio. The bl-situ spectroelectrochemistry shows that the infrared spectra are influenced by the concentration of LiClO4. The bridging cyanide groups with a structure Fe-I-C drop N ... Fe-I-C drop N are formed during the reduction process of K3Fe (CN)(6). There may be an activated complex between the Lif cation and the complex anion.
