Manual de uso del software Ocean Data View (ODV)

El presente manual de uso del software de visualización de datos “Ocean Data View” (ODV) describe la exploración, análisis y visualización de datos oceanográficos según el formato de la colección mundial de base de datos del océano “World Ocean Database” (WOD). El manual comprende 6 ejercicios prácticos donde se describe paso a paso la creación de las metavariables, la importación de los datos y su visualización mediante mapas de latitud, longitud y gráficos de dispersión, secciones verticales y series de tiempo. Se sugiere el uso extensivo del ODV para la visualización de datos oceanográficos por el personal científico del IMARPE.

Operaciones de pesca con chinchorro manual en Huacho, 2003

En las playas de Atahuanca, Lobiños y Playa Chica de Huacho, del 24 de febrero al 2 de marzo 2003, se desarrolló la pesca con chinchorro manual, la captura total fue 312,77 kg, correspondiendo a lisa el mayor porcentaje (39,55%). La CPUE varió entre 500 kg.h-1 y 8,77 kg.h-1. El rango de tallas varió para lisa entre 22 y 39 cm, mismis entre 11 y 31 cm; la correlación entre longitud y peso fue altamente significativa para lisa con r=0,961 y mismis r=0,997. Las correlaciones de los parámetros de longitud y el perímetro a la marca de la red registraron valores significativos con un r = 0,961 para la lisa y r = 0,973 para el mismis. Las hembras de lisa estuvieron en estadio III (26,32%) y II (21,05%) y los machos en estadio II y IV (15,79%). Las hembras de mismis estuvieron en estadio III (7,41%) y los machos en estadios IV (44,44%) y V (18,52%). Las operaciones de pesca experimental se efectuaron a 6 m de profundidad. La presencia de los recursos costeros est uvo asociada a un rango de 17,1 a 17,4 °C.

Comportamiento y respuesta selectiva de la red manual chinchorro en Huarmey-Áncash

El estudio se realizó en otoño (30 de abril al 9 de mayo) e invierno (5 al 14 de julio) del 2009 con la finalidad de evaluar el comportamiento y respuesta selectiva de la red manual chinchorro manual en la zona de Huarmey - Región Áncash. Se realizaron 28 lances de pesca en las zonas de El Huaro, Culebras, Tuquillo, Huanchaquito, y para calamar en El Castillo, Gramadal, Las Zorras. La red manual chinchorro está dirigida a la pesquería multiespecífica, la composición de la capturas fue mayor en el copo (83% fase I, 92% fase II), seguido de las alas (13% fase I, 2% fase II) y el sobrecopo (4% fase I, 6% fase II), las principales especies capturadas fueron Doryteuthis gahi, Sciaena deliciosa, Odontesthes regia, Urotrygon asterias, Paralichthys adspersus, Mugil cephalus, Scomber japonicus. De las especies capturadas que cuentan con una talla mínima legal de captura (TMC), se registró más de 65% de ejemplares juveniles, lo que es un indicador de la baja respuesta selectiva y del impacto negativo al ecosistema.

Why did Swiss citizens refuse a comprehensive second-hand smoke ban?

The ill effects of second-hand smoke are now well documented. To protect the population from exposure to tobacco smoke, comprehensive smoking bans are necessary as expressed in the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control and its guidelines. Switzerland has only a partial smoking ban full of exceptions which has been in effect since 2010, which reproduces the so-called Spanish model. In September 2012, the Swiss citizens refused a proposal for a more comprehensive ban. This case study examines the reasons behind this rejection and draws some lessons that can be learnt from it.

Model-based Segmentation and Fusion of 3D Computed Tomography and 3D Ultrasound of the Eye for Radiotherapy Planning

Computed Tomography (CT) represents the standard imaging modality for tumor volume delineation for radiotherapy treatment planning of retinoblastoma despite some inherent limitations. CT scan is very useful in providing information on physical density for dose calculation and morphological volumetric information but presents a low sensitivity in assessing the tumor viability. On the other hand, 3D ultrasound (US) allows a highly accurate definition of the tumor volume thanks to its high spatial resolution but it is not currently integrated in the treatment planning but used only for diagnosis and follow-up. Our ultimate goal is an automatic segmentation of gross tumor volume (GTV) in the 3D US, the segmentation of the organs at risk (OAR) in the CT and the registration of both modalities. In this paper, we present some preliminary results in this direction. We present 3D active contour-based segmentation of the eye ball and the lens in CT images; the presented approach incorporates the prior knowledge of the anatomy by using a 3D geometrical eye model. The automated segmentation results are validated by comparing with manual segmentations. Then, we present two approaches for the fusion of 3D CT and US images: (i) landmark-based transformation, and (ii) object-based transformation that makes use of eye ball contour information on CT and US images.

Hand development and sequence of ossification in the forelimb of the European shrew Crocidura russula (Soricidae) and comparisons across therian mammals.

Hand development in the European shrew Crocidura russula is described, based on the examination of a cleared and double-stained ontogenetic series and histological sections of a c. 20-day-old embryo and a neonate. In the embryo all carpal elements are still mesenchymal condensations, and there are three more elements than in the adult stage: the 'lunatum', which fuses with the scaphoid around birth; a centrale, which either fuses with another carpal element or just disappears later in ontogeny; and the anlage of an element that later fuses with the radius. Carpal arrangement in the neonate and the adult is the same. In order to compare the relative timing of the onset of ossification in forelimb bones in C. russula with that of other therians, we built up two matrices of events based on two sets of data and used the event-pair method. In the first analysis, ossification of forelimb elements in general was examined, including that of the humerus, radius, ulna, the first carpal and metacarpal to ossify, and the phalanges of the third digit. The second analysis included each carpal, humerus, radius, ulna, the first metacarpal and the first phalanx to ossify. Some characters (= event-pairs) provide synapomorphies for some clades examined. There have been some shifts in the timing of ossification apparently not caused by ecological and/or environmental influences. In two species (Oryctolagus and Myotis), there is a tendency to start the ossification of the carpals relatively earlier than in all other species examined, the sauropsid outgroups included.

Per l’empresa un dels objectius principals és oferir al client la possibilitat de comprar els seus productes de manera còmode a través d’Internet, ja que accedint amb un nom d’usuari i una contrasenya podrà obtenir totes les referències de les que es disposa, podrà tramitar les comandes i controlar-ne l’estat fins el moment de l’entrega. A part de les seccions destinades a usuaris i clients s’ha creat una zona d’administració, on els responsables de l’empresa podran gestionar tots els productes, modificar i visualitzar les comandes. A més aprofitant que aquestes quedaran guardades a una base de dades juntament amb els productes venuts, s’integrarà el sistema de facturació de l’empresa, cosa que fins el moment es feia de manera manual i maldestre. També es programarà una part on els responsables podran insertar reparacions i vendes informàtiques que s’hagin de facturar o per fer-ne un us estadístic en un futur. Tot això ens portarà a implementar un sistema d’usuaris registrats amb diferents permisos i diferents nivells d’accés a l’aplicació, fins a un total de 5. S’ha intentat fer de l’aplicació, un sistema a mida i que compleixi tots els requisits que l’empresa ens ha demanat, amb la previsió que més endavant s’hi pugui implementar un sistema de gestió d’estocs i altres millores per oferir als seus clients un servei inigualable. Per tal de portar a terme tot aquest treball s’ha utilitzat una tecnologia de lliure distribució com és el llenguatge PHP i la base de dades MySQL, aquesta opció a part d’una filosofia es produeix per intentar minimitzar els costos de l’aplicatiu. La finalitat de l’empresa amb aquest projecte és oferir millor imatge i servei, efectivitat i rapidesa en tot el procés de vendes, així com reduir costos de facturació i també de publicitat, ja que es podrà potenciar molt més la pàgina web via internet.

Office of Location and Environment Manual, August 2009

This manual captures the experience of practitioners in the Iowa Department of Transportation’s (Iowa DOT’s) Office of Location and Environment (OLE). It also documents the need for coordinated project development efforts during the highway project planning, or location study phase and engineering design. The location study phase establishes: * The definition of, and need for, the highway improvement project * The range of alternatives and many key attributes of the project’s design * The recommended alternative, its impacts, and the agreed-to conditions for project approval The location study process involves developing engineering alternatives, collecting engineering and environmental data, and completing design refinements to accomplish functional designs. The items above also embody the basic content required for projects compliant with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) of 19691, which directs federal agencies to use a systematic, interdisciplinary approach during the planning process whenever proposed actions (or “projects”) have the potential for environmental impacts. In doing so, NEPA requires coordination with stakeholders, review, comment, and public disclosure. Are location studies and environmental studies more about the process or the documents? If properly conducted, they concern both—unbiased and reasonable processes with quality and timely documents. In essence, every project is a story that needs to be told. Engineering and environmental regulations and guidance, as documented in this manual, will help project staff and managers become better storytellers.

Manual de CATMARC, 2a edició: una primera lectura

Comentari crític a la segona edició del Manual del CATMARC. Es comenta la nova estructura adoptada i els criteris que sembla que s'han seguit. Si a la primera edició (1987) el format estava recolzat en l'Instltut Cátala de Bibliografía, la segona no presenta cap institució que l'avali. Al format originari s'afegeixen, sense aparent justificado, nous camps, alguns adaptáis d'USMARC. Camps d'ús local del SICAB que trenquen el caràcter de norma acceptadaque tenia CATMARC. El format d'autoritats modifica el d'USMARC, en el qual es basa. Un apéndix llista els canvis introduïts a la nova edició del format, tot indicant lurs fonts.

Hand-arm vibration syndrome with proximal ulnar artery occlusion.

The case of a man exposed during 25 years to vibration while maneuvering a heavy earth moving tractor is reported. The first clinical manifestation of hand-arm vibration syndrome was a bilateral Raynaud's phenomenon followed five years later by digital necrosis. The arteriography revealed a proximal and bilateral ulnar artery occlusion. Bilateral median nerve conduction abnormalities were also present. Vibration exposure level was much higher than the threshold level proposed by the European Commission. Laboratory examinations for vasculitis and other vascular diseases were all negative. The purpose of this report is to show that vibration can be responsible for proximal occlusion of a medium sized artery and severe neurovascular abnormalities which must be distinguished from the usual vasospastic Raynaud's phenomenon and the classical hypothenar hammer syndrome. An early and correct diagnosis is crucial because continued repetitive trauma can result in irreversible ischemic injury and loss of digits.
