BACKGROUND: The Framework Convention on Tobacco Control makes a number of recommendations aimed at restricting the marketing of tobacco products. Tobacco industry political activity has been identified as an obstacle to Parties' development and implementation of these provisions. This study systematically reviews the existing literature on tobacco industry efforts to influence marketing regulations and develops taxonomies of 1) industry strategies and tactics and 2) industry frames and arguments. METHODS: Searches were conducted between April-July 2011, and updated in March 2013. Articles were included if they made reference to tobacco industry efforts to influence marketing regulations; supported claims with verifiable evidence; were written in English; and concerned the period 1990-2013. 48 articles met the review criteria. Narrative synthesis was used to combine the evidence. RESULTS: 56% of articles focused on activity in North America, Europe or Australasia, the rest focusing on Asia (17%), South America, Africa or transnational activity. Six main political strategies and four main frames were identified. The tobacco industry frequently claims that the proposed policy will have negative unintended consequences, that there are legal barriers to regulation, and that the regulation is unnecessary because, for example, industry does not market to youth or adheres to a voluntary code. The industry primarily conveys these arguments through direct and indirect lobbying, the promotion of voluntary codes and alternative policies, and the formation of alliances with other industrial sectors. The majority of tactics and arguments were used in multiple jurisdictions. CONCLUSIONS: Tobacco industry political activity is far more diverse than suggested by existing taxonomies of corporate political activity. Tactics and arguments are repeated across jurisdictions, suggesting that the taxonomies of industry tactics and arguments developed in this paper are generalisable to multiple jurisdictions and can be used to predict industry activity.

=== / The author sums up briefly the main aspects and problems to do with the pricing of derived products. The theory of derivative pricing uses the redundancy among products on the market to arrive at relative product prices. But this can be done only on a complete market, so that only with a complete market does it become possible to omit from the theory and the practice built upon it the concept of utility functions, and for that reason the principle of risk-neutral pricing is misleading. To put it another way, the theory of derived products is capable of freeing itself from the concept of utility functions only at a price where in practice it places impossible restrictions on the market structure. This it is essential to emphasize in market practice and in teaching.

_____ Significant numbers of companies have the problem that demand for their products are sporadic in nature. Demand of such products is not continual in time; its demand is diffused, is random with large proportion of zero values in the analyzed time series. The sporadic character of a demand pattern actually means that available information on the demand of previous selling periods is leaky resulting in lower quality of data available. In these cases traditional forecasting techniques do not result in reliable forecast. Special forecasting algorithms have been developed during the last decade dealing with this problem. The paper introduces these techniques and offers suggestions for application. It also presents the case study of a Hungarian pharmaceutical wholesaler company. Based on real data we develop a topology of the company's product portfolio, carry out forecasts using different techniques including those developed for products with sporadic demand and also analyze the quality of these forecasts.

The purpose of this research was to study interfering products in fire debris analysis, including their identification and characterization. Different substrates were classified, burned, extracted and analyzed in order to identify all the interfering products that they may release. It has been shown that these products come from three different sources: substrate background products, pyrolysis products and possibly combustion products. Different parameters in the creation of these products were evaluated such as the extinguishment process as well as the weathering of the sample prior to the analysis. It has been shown that the presence of these products is not always constant and thus, makes it difficult to extrapolate data to similar cases. Furthermore, some of these products are similar to the ones found in ignitable liquids. Finally, it shows one more time how important it is to collect and analyze control samples in fire debris analysis. ^

Cyanobacteria are photosynthetic prokaryotes that can be found in freshwater and marine environments as well as in soil. These organisms produce a variety of different biologically active compounds exhibiting anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-cancer properties among others. In this study, cyanobacterial isolates were screened for their ability to produce extracellular antibacterial products. Cyanobacteria were isolated from fresh water and soil samples collected in the Pembroke Pines, FL area. Twenty- seven strains of cyanobacteria were isolated belonging to the following genera: Limnothrix, Nostoc, Fischerella, Anabaena, Pseudoanabaena, Lyngbya, Leptolyngbya, Tychonema, and Calothrix. Individual strains were grown in liquid culture in laboratory conditions. Following 14-day cultivation, the culture liquid was filtered and tested for activity against the following bacteria: Escherichia coli, Bacillus megatarium, Staphylococcus aureus, and Micrococcus luteus. Among all genera of cyanobacterial strains tested, Fischerella exhibited the greatest inhibitory activity. An attempt was made to isolate the active compound from the culture liquid of the active strains. Lipophilic extracts from culture liquid were obtained from three selected Fischerella strains. The extracts proved to have varying levels of activity against the tested bacteria. Inhibitory activity from all three Fischerella strains was detected against B. megatarium and M luteus. The only strain that was active against S. aureus was Fischerella sp. 114-12 while none of the extracts showed activity against E. coli. This kind of screening has potential pharmaceutical and agricultural benefits, including possible discovery of novel antibiotics.

Insulin signaling is one of the main initiators of adipogenesis, the conversion from pre-adipocyte to adipocyte or lipid droplet. Rab proteins are the master regulator of intracellular trafficking and endosome fusion in endocytosis, making them potential regulators of insulin signaling in adipogenesis. Pre-adipocytes 3T3-Ll cells expressing several Rab5 constructs were used to examine the effect of dehydroleucodine (DhL ), a sesquiterpene lactone isolated from aerial parts of Artemisia douglasiana Besser. The results obtained identify Rab5 deactivation as a key step for adipogenesis by forming signaling endosomes. The addition of DhL significantly inhibited the lipid droplet accumulation in a dose-dependent manner and dramatically attenuated the synthesis of adipogenic transcriptional factors, C/EBPa and PPARy. Activation of AMPKa, Erk and Akt during adipocytic differentiation was not inhibited by treatment with DhL. This data suggest that DhL has an important role in Rab5 dependent adipogenesis by regulating several transcriptional factors including PP ARy expression, which is known to play an essential role during fat formation.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco industry interference has been identified as the greatest obstacle to the implementation of evidence-based measures to reduce tobacco use. Understanding and addressing industry interference in public health policy-making is therefore crucial. Existing conceptualisations of corporate political activity (CPA) are embedded in a business perspective and do not attend to CPA's social and public health costs; most have not drawn on the unique resource represented by internal tobacco industry documents. Building on this literature, including systematic reviews, we develop a critically informed conceptual model of tobacco industry political activity. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We thematically analysed published papers included in two systematic reviews examining tobacco industry influence on taxation and marketing of tobacco; we included 45 of 46 papers in the former category and 20 of 48 papers in the latter (n = 65). We used a grounded theory approach to build taxonomies of "discursive" (argument-based) and "instrumental" (action-based) industry strategies and from these devised the Policy Dystopia Model, which shows that the industry, working through different constituencies, constructs a metanarrative to argue that proposed policies will lead to a dysfunctional future of policy failure and widely dispersed adverse social and economic consequences. Simultaneously, it uses diverse, interlocking insider and outsider instrumental strategies to disseminate this narrative and enhance its persuasiveness in order to secure its preferred policy outcomes. Limitations are that many papers were historical (some dating back to the 1970s) and focused on high-income regions. CONCLUSIONS: The model provides an evidence-based, accessible way of understanding diverse corporate political strategies. It should enable public health actors and officials to preempt these strategies and develop realistic assessments of the industry's claims.

Vascular phloem loading has long been recognized as an essential step in the establishment of a systemic virus infection. Yet little is known about this process and the mechanisms that control it. In this study, an interaction between the replication protein of Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) and phloem specific auxin/indole acetic acid (Aux/IAA) transcriptional regulators was found to modulate virus phloem loading. Promoter expression studies show TMV 126/183 kDa interacting Aux/IAAs predominantly express and accumulate within the nuclei of phloem companion cells (CC). Furthermore, CC Aux/IAA nuclear localization is disrupted upon infection with an interacting virus but not during infection with a non-interacting virus. In situ analysis of virus spread shows the inability of TMV variants to disrupt Aux/IAA CC nuclear localization correlates with a reduced ability to load into the vascular tissue. Subsequent systemic movement assays also demonstrate that a virus capable of disrupting Aux/IAA localization is significantly more competitive at systemic movement than a non-interacting virus. Similarly, CC expression and over-accumulation of a degradation-resistant-interacting Aux/IAA protein was found to selectively inhibit TMV accumulation and phloem loading. Transcriptional expression studies demonstrate a role for interacting Aux/IAA proteins in the regulation of salicylic acid and jasmonic acid dependent host defense responses as well as virus specific movement factors including pectin methylesterase that are involved in regulating plasmodesmata size exclusion limits and promoting virus cell-to-cell movement. Further characterization of the phloem environment was done using two phloem specific promoters (pSUC2 and pSULTR2;2) to generate epitope-tagged polysomal-RNA complexes. Immuno-purification using the epitope tag allowed us to obtain mRNAs bound to polysomes (the translatome) specifically in phloem tissue. We found the phloem translatome is uniquely altered during TMV infection with 90% and 88% of genes down regulated in the pSUC2 and pSULTR2;2 phloem translatomes, compared to 31% of genes down regulated in the whole plant p35S translatome. Transcripts down regulated in phloem include genes involved in callose deposition at plasmodesmata, host defense responses, and RNA silencing. Combined, these findings indicate TMV reprograms gene expression within the vascular phloem as a means to enhance phloem loading and systemic spread.
