BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to assess sex-associated differences in lung cancer patients in Eastern Switzerland. METHODS All 670 lung cancer patients referred to the cancer center in St. Gallen between January 2000 and December 2005 were retrospectively analyzed. We investigated sex-associated differences in age, smoking habits, histology, stage, treatment and survival. RESULTS There were 474 (71%) men and 196 (29%) women with lung cancer. Mean age at the time of diagnosis was 64 years for women and 67 years for men (p = 0.01). Of the patients <55 years of age, 47 (24%) were women and only 65 (14%) were men. Men smoked significantly more than women (median pack-years: 50 vs. 30; p < 0.001). Of the heavy smokers (>40 pack-years), 278 (56%) were men and 68 (33%) were women. More men had squamous cell carcinoma (36%) than women (17%). Conversely, more women presented with adenocarcinoma (48%) than men (27%). No significant sex-associated differences were observed when analyzing first treatments received. Median overall survival was 10 months for both sexes. CONCLUSIONS In Eastern Switzerland, women with lung cancer were younger, more likely to have smoked significantly less and more likely to have adenocarcinoma, compared to men with lung cancer. These findings are consistent with those found in other western populations.

BACKGROUND & AIMS The interaction of KIR with their HLA ligands drives the activation and inhibition of natural killer (NK) cells. NK cells could be implicated in the development of liver fibrosis in chronic hepatitis C. METHODS We analysed 206 non-transplanted and 53 liver transplanted patients, selected according to their Metavir fibrosis stage. Several variables such as the number of activator KIR or the HLA ligands were considered in multinomial and logistic regression models. Possible confounding variables were also investigated. RESULTS The KIRs were not significant predictors of the fibrosis stage. Conversely, a significant reduction of the HLA-C1C2 genotype was observed in the most advanced fibrosis stage group (F4) in both cohorts. Furthermore, the progression rate of fibrosis was almost 10 times faster in the subgroup of patients after liver transplantation and HLA-C1C2 was significantly reduced in this cohort compared to non-transplanted patients. CONCLUSION This study suggests a possible role of KIR and their ligands in the development of liver damage. The absence of C1 and C2 ligands heterozygosity could lead to less inhibition of NK cells and a quicker progression to a high level of fibrosis in patients infected by HCV, especially following liver transplantation. Introduction. A vast majority of studies conducted in both developed and developing nations have focused on the epidemiology of HBV (Hepatitis B virus) and HCV (Hepatitis C virus) in high-risk populations; low-risk populations have been neglected. Recently Hwang et al conducted a unique large cross-sectional study in American university students that focused on cosmetic procedures and drug use for acquiring these infections among a low-risk young adult population In Houston. ^ Methods. This study is a secondary data analysis of the cross-sectional study conducted by Hwang et al. Data for this anonymous study were collected from 7,960 college students, among whom were the 2,561 non US/Canadian born students included in this study. All students completed a self-administered questionnaire and provided a blood sample. The epidemiology of HBV/HCV and risk factors for acquiring HBV/HCV infection was studied by comparing those with HBV/HCV infection versus those without. Both univariate and multivariate logistic regression was used to analyze the data. ^ Results. Overall prevalence of HBV and HCV infections were 22% and 0.8% respectively. By multivariable analysis, the factors that were independently associated with increased prevalence of HBV infection were increasing age per year (OR=1.06, 95% C.I=1.04-1.08), Black or Asian race (OR=6.21, 95% C.I=3.14-12.27), history of household contact with hepatitis (OR=1.87, 95% C.I=1.15-3.05), and having sexual partner with hepatitis (OR=5.20, 95% C.I=1.5-18.00). For HCV these factors included increasing age per year (OR= 1.08, 95% C.I=1.03-1.14), history of blood transfusion prior to 1991 (OR=25.45, 95% C.I=7.58-85.40), and Injection drug use. (OR=78.15, 95% C.I=12.19-500.85). Cosmetic procedures like tattooing were not significant risk factors for either HBV or HCV infection. ^ Conclusions. In a low-risk adult foreign born population, cosmetic procedures are not significant risk factors for HBV or HCV infection. The prevention strategies of these infections in this population should focus on safe sexual practices/abstinence and HBV vaccination should be provided to adolescents and sexually active adults. ^

Generalized linear Poisson and logistic regression models were utilized to examine the relationship between temperature and precipitation and cases of Saint Louis encephalitis virus spread in the Houston metropolitan area. The models were investigated with and without repeated measures, with a first order autoregressive (AR1) correlation structure used for the repeated measures model. The two types of Poisson regression models, with and without correlation structure, showed that a unit increase in temperature measured in degrees Fahrenheit increases the occurrence of the virus 1.7 times and a unit increase in precipitation measured in inches increases the occurrence of the virus 1.5 times. Logistic regression did not show these covariates to be significant as predictors for encephalitis activity in Houston for either correlation structure. This discrepancy for the logistic model could be attributed to the small data set.^ Keywords: Saint Louis Encephalitis; Generalized Linear Model; Poisson; Logistic; First Order Autoregressive; Temperature; Precipitation. ^

Human peripheral blood monocytes (HPBM) were isolated by centrifugal elutriation from mononuclear cell enriched fractions after routine plateletapheresis and the relationship between maturation of HPBM to macrophage-like cells and activation for tumoricidal activity determined. HPBM were cultured for various times in RPMI 1640 supplemented with 5% pooled human AB serum and cytotoxicity to $\sp{125}$IUDR labeled A375M, a human melanoma cell line, and TNF-$\alpha$ release determined by cytolysis of actinomycin D treated L929 cells. Freshly isolated HPBM or those exposed to recombinant IFN-$\gamma$(1.0 U/ml) were not cytolytic and did not release TNF-$\alpha$ into culture supernatants. Exposure to bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS, 1.0 $\upsilon$g/ml) stimulated cytolytic activity and release of TNF-$\alpha$. Maximal release of TNF-$\alpha$ protein occurred at 8 hrs and returned to baseline by 72 hrs. Expression of TNF-$\alpha$ protein was determined by Western blotting. Neither freshly isolated nor IFN-$\gamma$ treated HPBM expressed TNF protein at any time during in vitro culture. LPS treated HPBM maximally expressed the 17KD TNF-$\alpha$ protein at 8 hrs, and protein was not detected after 36 hrs of in vitro culture. Expression of TNF-$\alpha$ mRNA was determined by Northern blotting. Freshly isolated HPBM express TNF-$\alpha$ mRNA which decays to basal levels by 6 hrs of in vitro culture. IFN-$\gamma$ treatment maintains TNF-$\alpha$ mRNA expression for up to 48 hrs of culture, after which it is undetectable. LPS induces TNF-$\alpha$ mRNA after 30 minutes of exposure with maximal accumulation occurring between 4 to 8 hrs. TNF mRNA was not detected in control HPBM at any time after 6 hrs or IFN-$\gamma$ treated HPBM after 48 hrs of in vitro culture. A pulse of LPS the last 24 hrs of in vitro culture induces the accumulation of TNF-$\alpha$ mRNA in HPBM cultured for 3, 5, and 7 days, with the magnitude of induction decreasing approximately 10 fold between 3 and 7 days. Induction of TNF-$\alpha$ mRNA occurred in the absence of detectable TNF-$\alpha$ protein or supernatant activity. Maturation of HPBM to macrophage-like cells controls competence for activation, magnitude and duration of the activation response. ^

Seasonal patterns in the partitioning of phytoplankton carbon during receding sea ice conditions in the eastern Bering Sea water column are presented using rates of 14C net primary productivity (NPP), phototrophic plankton carbon content, and POC export fluxes from shelf and slope waters in the spring (March 30-May 6) and summer (July 3-30) of 2008. At ice-covered and marginal ice zone (MIZ) stations on the inner and middle shelf in spring, NPP averaged 76 ± 93 mmol C/m**2/d, and in ice-free waters on the outer shelf NPP averaged 102 ± 137 mmol C/m**2/d. In summer, rates of NPP were more uniform across the entire shelf and averaged 43 ± 23 mmol C/m**2/d over the entire shelf. A concomitant shift was observed in the phototrophic pico-, nano-, and microplankton community in the chlorophyll maximum, from a diatom dominated system (80 ± 12% autotrophic C) in ice covered and MIZ waters in spring, to a microflagellate dominated system (71 ± 31% autotrophic C) in summer. Sediment trap POC fluxes near the 1% PAR depth in ice-free slope waters increased by 70% from spring to summer, from 10 ± 7 mmol C/m**2/d to 17 ± 5 mmol C/m**2/d, respectively. Over the shelf, under-ice trap fluxes at 20 m were higher, averaging 43 ± 17 mmol C/m**2/d POC export over the shelf and slope estimated from 234Th deficits averaged 11 ± 5 mmol C/m**2/d in spring and 10 ± 2 mmol C/m**2/d in summer. Average e-ratios calculated on a station-by-station basis decreased by ~ 30% from spring to summer, from 0.46 ± 0.48 in ice-covered and MIZ waters, to 0.33 ± 0.26 in summer, though the high uncertainty prevents a statistical differentiation of these data.
