Neste estudo são apresentadas as análises espaciais e temporais dos dados sinóticos coletados durante quatro campanhas oceanográficas do programa “REVIZEE/SCORE-N” realizadas em março-abril de 1995, outubro-novembro de 1997, abril-maio de 1999 e agosto-setembro de 2001. Em complemento às análises dos dados hidrológicos, foram utilizados resultados do modelo numérico CLIPPER - Experimento ATL6 (1/6 deg.). A ênfase deste artigo é avaliar o deslocamento sazonal e espacial da pluma de água Amazônica nas regiões localizadas à sudoeste, noroeste e em frente à foz do rio Amazonas. Dados hidrológicos e resultados do modelo demonstram que durante os meses de março-maio a pluma do rio Amazonas move-se para sudoeste, ao longo da costa norte brasileiro, tendendo a diminuir o deslocamento da pluma para sudoeste durante os meses de agosto-setembro. De outubro a novembro, não foi observado ou registrado o deslocamento da pluma para sudoeste. Resultados do modelo revelam anéis gerados pela retroflexão da Corrente Norte do Brasil (CNB) em torno de 7º N, e também a influência de água proveniente do rio Amazonas em volta desses anéis durante o mês de agosto.

This article investigates the productivity and production function of thirteen large Brazilian textile and clothing companies before and after the end of the Agreement on Textiles and Clothing (AVT) that abolished import quotas in 2005. For this purpose, we estimate the stochastic production frontier in panel data between 1997 and 2008 and simultaneously an explanatory equation for the (in)efficiency of firms, as proposed by Battese and Coelli (1995). The results indicated that more efficient firms are the oldest. The total factor productivity of firms tended to fall, even after the end of quotas, increasing productivity only from 2007. Overall, firms from Santa Catarina were more efficient than those of other states.

The research discusses the pulmonary function of the students of SORRI that are part of the Project for the extension of the Department of Physical Education in Bauru Swimming for People with Disabilities during the aquatic activities, noting the changes in efficiency class of breathing with the practice of aquatic activity, by the analysis of the volume and respiratory capacity. The respiratory control is essential in the process of adaptation to the liquid medium, because a student who fails to immerse the face in the water will not be able to adopt a horizontal position sufficiently stable. The practice of aquatic activities requires a great effort of breathing. Therefore, the practice of aquatic activities influence favorably the breathing, because the movements performed in the water tone the diaphragm, which is the essential muscle of the breathing, allowing an improvement in pulmonary ventilation. For the purposes of this study, the sample was composed of 10 students of the SORRI of the city of Bauru forming part of the project Swimming for People with Disabilities, practicing swimming once a week for 1 hour. For the collection of lung volumes and capacities was used a transducer of air flow and a unit of data collection, model MP36, both of the brand Biopac connected to a computer, where the data were collected and recorded for later analysis. Two tests were carried out in a day with each participant in the project of swimming, and a test at the beginning of the lesson, at rest, and another after a series of 10 breaths carried out within the swimming pool. These tests were performed in the months of March and April. The analysis of the data was through the medium of the figures and also individually, noting the changes in respiratory function of students practicing aquatic activities, without which there would be no comparison between the participants. Sugarcane bagasse cellulose was subjected to the extremely low acid (ELA) hydrolysis in 0.07% H2SO4 at 190, 210 and 225 degrees C for various times. The cellulose residues from this process were characterized by TGA, XRD, GPC, FIR and SEM. A kinetic study of thermal decomposition of the residues was also carried out, using the ASTM and Kissinger methods. The thermal studies revealed that residues of cellulose hydrolyzed at 190, 210 and 225 degrees C for 80,40 and 8 min have initial decomposition temperature and activation energy for the main decomposition step similar to those of Avicel PH-101. XRD studies confirmed this finding by showing that these cellulose residues are similar to Avicel in crystallinity index and crystallite size in relation to the 110 and 200 planes. FTIR spectra revealed no significant changes in the cellulose chemical structure and analysis of SEM micrographs demonstrated that the particle size of the cellulose residues hydrolyzed at 190 and 210 degrees C were similar to that of Avicel. This article investigates the effect of product market liberalisation on employment allowing for interactions between policies and institutions in product and labour markets. Using panel data for OECD countries over the period 19802002, we present evidence that product market deregulation is more effective at the margin when labour market regulation is high. The data also suggest that product market liberalisation may promote employment-enhancing labour market reforms.

Background: In addition to the oncogenic human papillomavirus (HPV), several cofactors are needed in cervical carcinogenesis, but whether the HPV covariates associated with incident i) CIN1 are different from those of incident ii) CIN2 and iii) CIN3 needs further assessment. Objectives: To gain further insights into the true biological differences between CIN1, CIN2 and CIN3, we assessed HPV covariates associated with incident CIN1, CIN2, and CIN3. Study Design and Methods: HPV covariates associated with progression to CIN1, CIN2 and CIN3 were analysed in the combined cohort of the NIS (n = 3,187) and LAMS study (n = 12,114), using competing-risks regression models (in panel data) for baseline HR-HPV-positive women (n = 1,105), who represent a sub-cohort of all 1,865 women prospectively followed-up in these two studies. Results: Altogether, 90 (4.8%), 39 (2.1%) and 14 (1.4%) cases progressed to CIN1, CIN2, and CIN3, respectively. Among these baseline HR-HPV-positive women, the risk profiles of incident GIN I, CIN2 and CIN3 were unique in that completely different HPV covariates were associated with progression to CIN1, CIN2 and CIN3, irrespective which categories (non-progression, CIN1, CIN2, CIN3 or all) were used as competing-risks events in univariate and multivariate models. Conclusions: These data confirm our previous analysis based on multinomial regression models implicating that distinct covariates of HR-HPV are associated with progression to CIN1, CIN2 and CIN3. This emphasises true biological differences between the three grades of GIN, which revisits the concept of combining CIN2 with CIN3 or with CIN1 in histological classification or used as a common end-point, e.g., in HPV vaccine trials.

We report the first tungsten isotopic measurements in stardust silicon carbide (SiC) grains recovered from the Murchison carbonaceous chondrite. The isotopes (182,183,184,186)Wand (179,180)Hf were measured on both an aggregate (KJB fraction) and single stardust SiC grains (LS+ LU fraction) believed to have condensed in the outflows of low-mass carbon-rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars with close-to-solar metallicity. The SiC aggregate shows small deviations from terrestrial (= solar) composition in the (182)W/(184)Wand (183)W/(184)Wratios, with deficits in (182)W and (183)W with respect to (184)W. The (186)W/(184)W ratio, however, shows no apparent deviation from the solar value. Tungsten isotopic measurements in single mainstream stardust SiC grains revealed lower than solar (182)W/(184)W, (183)W/(184)W, and (186)W/(184)W ratios. We have compared the SiC data with theoretical predictions of the evolution of W isotopic ratios in the envelopes of AGB stars. These ratios are affected by the slow neutron-capture process and match the SiC data regarding their (182)W/(184)W, (183)W/(184)W, and (179)Hf/(180)Hf isotopic compositions, although a small adjustment in the s-process production of (183)W is needed in order to have a better agreement between the SiC data and model predictions. The models cannot explain the (186)W/(184)W ratios observed in the SiC grains, even when the current (185)W neutron-capture cross section is increased by a factor of two. Further study is required to better assess how model uncertainties (e. g., the formation of the (13)C neutron source, the mass-loss law, the modeling of the third dredge-up, and the efficiency of the (22)Ne neutron source) may affect current s-process predictions.

Semisupervised learning is a machine learning approach that is able to employ both labeled and unlabeled samples in the training process. In this paper, we propose a semisupervised data classification model based on a combined random-preferential walk of particles in a network (graph) constructed from the input dataset. The particles of the same class cooperate among themselves, while the particles of different classes compete with each other to propagate class labels to the whole network. A rigorous model definition is provided via a nonlinear stochastic dynamical system and a mathematical analysis of its behavior is carried out. A numerical validation presented in this paper confirms the theoretical predictions. An interesting feature brought by the competitive-cooperative mechanism is that the proposed model can achieve good classification rates while exhibiting low computational complexity order in comparison to other network-based semisupervised algorithms. Computer simulations conducted on synthetic and real-world datasets reveal the effectiveness of the model.

A measurement of the multi-strange Xi(-) and Omega(-) baryons and their antiparticles by the ALICE experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is presented for inelastic proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. The transverse momentum (p(T)) distributions were studied at mid-rapidity (vertical bar y vertical bar < 0.5) in the range of 0.6 < p(T) < 8.5 GeV/c Xi(-) for and Xi(+) baryons, and in the range of 0.8 < P-T < 5 GeV/c for Omega(-) and<(Omega)over bar>(+). Baryons and antibaryons were measured as separate particles and we find that the baryon to antibaryon ratio of both particle species is consistent with unity over the entire range of the measurement. The statistical precision of the current data has allowed us to measure a difference between the mean p(T) of Xi(-) ((Xi) over bar)(+) and Omega(-) ((Omega) over bar (+)). Particle yields, mean pi, and the spectra in the intermediate pi range are not well described by the PYTHIA Perugia 2011 tune Monte Carlo event generator, which has been tuned to reproduce the early LHC data. The discrepancy is largest for Omega(-)((Omega) over bar (+)). This PYTHIA tune approaches the pi spectra of Xi(-) and Xi(+) baryons below p(T) <0.85 GeV/c and describes the Xi(-) and Xi(+) spectra above p(T) > 6.0 GeV/c. We also illustrate the difference between the experimental data and model by comparing the corresponding ratios of (Omega(-) +(Omega) over bar (+))/(Xi(-) + Xi(+)) as a function of transverse mass. In recent years, new precision experiments have become possible withthe high luminosity accelerator facilities at MAMIand JLab, supplyingphysicists with precision data sets for different hadronic reactions inthe intermediate energy region, such as pion photo- andelectroproduction and real and virtual Compton scattering.By means of the low energy theorem (LET), the global properties of thenucleon (its mass, charge, and magnetic moment) can be separated fromthe effects of the internal structure of the nucleon, which areeffectively described by polarizabilities. Thepolarizabilities quantify the deformation of the charge andmagnetization densities inside the nucleon in an applied quasistaticelectromagnetic field. The present work is dedicated to develop atool for theextraction of the polarizabilities from these precise Compton data withminimum model dependence, making use of the detailed knowledge of pionphotoproduction by means of dispersion relations (DR). Due to thepresence of t-channel poles, the dispersion integrals for two ofthe six Compton amplitudes diverge. Therefore, we have suggested to subtract the s-channel dispersion integrals at zero photon energy($nu=0$). The subtraction functions at $nu=0$ are calculated through DRin the momentum transfer t at fixed $nu=0$, subtracted at t=0. For this calculation, we use the information about the t-channel process, $gammagammatopipito Nbar{N}$. In this way, four of thepolarizabilities can be predicted using the unsubtracted DR in the $s$-channel. The other two, $alpha-beta$ and $gamma_pi$, are free parameters in ourformalism and can be obtained from a fit to the Compton data.We present the results for unpolarized and polarized RCS observables,%in the kinematics of the most recent experiments, and indicate anenhanced sensitivity to the nucleon polarizabilities in theenergy range between pion production threshold and the $Delta(1232)$-resonance.newlineindentFurthermore,we extend the DR formalism to virtual Compton scattering (radiativeelectron scattering off the nucleon), in which the concept of thepolarizabilities is generalized to the case of avirtual initial photon by introducing six generalizedpolarizabilities (GPs). Our formalism provides predictions for the fourspin GPs, while the two scalar GPs $alpha(Q^2)$ and $beta(Q^2)$ have to befitted to the experimental data at each value of $Q^2$.We show that at energies betweenpion threshold and the $Delta(1232)$-resonance position, thesensitivity to the GPs can be increased significantly, as compared tolow energies, where the LEX is applicable. Our DR formalism can be used for analysing VCS experiments over a widerange of energy and virtuality $Q^2$, which allows one to extract theGPs from VCS data in different kinematics with a minimum of model dependence.

In Sub-Saharan Africa, non-democratic events, like civil wars and coup d'etat, destroy economic development. This study investigates both domestic and spatial effects on the likelihood of civil wars and coup d'etat. To civil wars, an increase of income growth is one of common research conclusions to stop wars. This study adds a concern on ethnic fractionalization. IV-2SLS is applied to overcome causality problem. The findings document that income growth is significant to reduce number and degree of violence in high ethnic fractionalized countries, otherwise they are trade-off. Income growth reduces amount of wars, but increases its violent level, in the countries with few large ethnic groups. Promoting growth should consider ethnic composition. This study also investigates the clustering and contagion of civil wars using spatial panel data models. Onset, incidence and end of civil conflicts spread across the network of neighboring countries while peace, the end of conflicts, diffuse only with the nearest neighbor. There is an evidence of indirect links from neighboring income growth, without too much inequality, to reduce the likelihood of civil wars. To coup d'etat, this study revisits its diffusion for both all types of coups and only successful ones. The results find an existence of both domestic and spatial determinants in different periods. Domestic income growth plays major role to reduce the likelihood of coup before cold war ends, while spatial effects do negative afterward. Results on probability to succeed coup are similar. After cold war ends, international organisations seriously promote democracy with pressure against coup d'etat, and it seems to be effective. In sum, this study indicates the role of domestic ethnic fractionalization and the spread of neighboring effects to the likelihood of non-democratic events in a country. Policy implementation should concern these factors.

Ozon (O3) ist in der Atmosphäre ein wichtiges Oxidanz und Treibhausgas. Während die höchsten Konzentrationen in der Stratosphäre beobachtet werden und die vor der gefährlichen UV-Strahlung schützende Ozonschicht bilden, können sich signifikante Änderungen der Ozon-Konzentration in der Region der Tropopause auf das Klima der Erde auswirken. Des Weiteren ist Ozon eine der Hauptquellen für das Hydroxylradikal (OH) und nimmt damit entscheidend Einfluss auf die Oxidationskraft der Atmosphäre. Der konvektive Transport von Ozon und seinen Vorläufergasen aus Regionen nahe der Erdoberfläche in die freie Troposphäre beeinflusst das Budget dieser Spezies in der Tropopausenregion.rnDie Datengrundlage der Studie in der vorliegenden Arbeit basiert auf den flugzeuggetragenen Messkampagnen GABRIEL 2005 (Suriname, Südamerika) sowie HOOVER I 2006 und HOOVER II 2007 (beide in Europa). Mit dem zur Verfügung stehenden Datensatz wird das Ozonbudget in der freien, unbelasteten Hintergrundatmosphäre und in der durch hochreichende Konvektion gestörten, oberen Troposphäre untersucht. Anhand der auf in-situ Messungen von O3, NO, OH, HO2 und dem aktinischen Strahlungsfluss basierten Berechnung der Netto-Ozonproduktionsrate (NOPR) werden für das Messgebiet Ozontendenzen in der unbelasteten Troposphäre abgeleitet und mit Simulationen des globalen Chemie-Transport-Modells MATCH-MPIC verglichen. Mit Hilfe zweier Fallstudien in den Tropen in Südamerika und den mittleren Breiten in Europa werden die Auswirkungen von hochreichender Konvektion auf die obere Troposphäre quantifiziert.rnDie Ergebnisse zeigen für die Grenzschicht in niedrigen und mittleren Breiten eine eindeutige Tendenz zur Produktion von Ozon, was für den tropischen Regenwald in der Messregion nicht der allgemeinen Erwartung entsprach, nach der diese Region durch die Zerstörung von Ozon charakterisiert sein sollte. In der oberen Troposphäre ab etwa 7 km wird für die beiden Regionen eine leichte Tendenz zur Ozonproduktion beobachtet. Signifikante Unterschiede zeigen die Ergebnisse für die mittlere Troposphäre. Während die Tropen in dieser Region durch eine eindeutige Tendenz zur Zerstörung von Ozon charakterisiert sind, lässt sich über den mittleren Breiten zwar eine hohe photochemische Aktivität aber keine derart klare Tendenz feststellen. Die hohen Breiten zeichnen sich durch eine neutrale Troposphäre in Bezug auf die Ozontendenz aus und weisen kaum photochemische Aktivität auf. Der Vergleich dieser Ergebnisse mit dem MATCH-MPIC Modell zeigt in weiten Teilen der Messregionen eine grundlegende Übereinstimmung in der Tendenz zur Produktion oder Zerstörung von Ozon. Die absoluten Werte werden vom Modell aber generell unterschätzt. Signifikante Unterschiede zwischen in-situ Daten und Modellsimulationen werden in der Grenzschicht über dem tropischen Regenwald identifiziert.rnDer Einfluss der Konvektion ist durch eine signifikant erhöhte NOPR gekennzeichnet. In dieser Arbeit wird in den Tropen mit einem Median-Wert von 0.20 ppbv h−1 eine um den Faktor 3.6 erhöhte NOPR im Vergleich zur ungestörten oberen Troposphäre abgeschätzt. In den mittleren Breiten führt die um eine Größenordnung höhere NO-Konzentration zu einem Wert von 1.89 ppbv h−1, was einer Überhöhung um einen Faktor 6.5 im Vergleich zum ungestörten Zustand entspricht. Diese Ergebnisse zeigen für beide Regionen in der oberen Troposphäre eine erhöhte Ozonproduktion als Folge konvektiver Aktivität. rnrnHochreichende Konvektion ist zudem ein sehr effektiver Mechanismus für den Vertikaltransport aus der Grenzschicht in die obere Troposphäre. Die schnelle Hebung in konvektiven Wolken führt bei Spurengasen mit Quellen an der Erdoberfläche zu einer Erhöhung ihrer Konzentration in der oberen Troposphäre. Die hochgradig löslichen Spurenstoffe Formaldehyd (HCHO) und Wasserstoffperoxid (H2O2) sind wichtige Vorläufergase der HOx-Radikale. Es wird angenommen, dass sie aufgrund ihrer Löslichkeit in Gewitterwolken effektiv ausgewaschen werden.rnIn der vorliegenden Arbeit wird eine Fallstudie von hochreichender Konvektion im Rahmen des HOOVER II Projekts im Sommer 2007 analysiert. Am 19.07.2007 entwickelten sich am Nachmittag am Südostrand eines in nordöstlicher Richtung ziehenden mesoskaligen konvektiven Systems drei zunächst isolierte konvektive Zellen. Flugzeuggetragene Messungen in der Aus- und der Einströmregion einer dieser Gewitterzellen stellen einen exzellenten Datensatz bereit, um die Auswirkungen von hochreichender Konvektion auf die Verteilung verschiedener Spurengase in der oberen Troposphäre zu untersuchen. Der Vergleich der Konzentrationen von Kohlenstoffmonoxid (CO) und Methan (CH4) zwischen der oberen Troposphäre und der Grenzschicht deutet auf einen nahezu unverdünnten Transport dieser langlebigen Spezies in der konvektiven Zelle hin. Die Verhältnisse betragen (0.94±0.04) für CO und (0.99±0.01) für CH4. Für die löslichen Spezies HCHO und H2O2 beträgt dieses Verhältnis in der Ausströmregion (0.55±0.09) bzw. (0.61±0.08). Dies ist ein Indiz dafür, dass diese Spezies nicht so effektiv ausgewaschen werden wie angenommen. Zum besseren Verständnis des Einflusses der Konvektion auf die Budgets dieser Spezies in der oberen Troposphäre wurden im Rahmen dieser Arbeit Boxmodell-Studien für den Beitrag der photochemischen Produktion in der Ausströmregion durchgeführt, wobei die gemessenen Spezies und Photolysefrequenzen als Randbedingungen dienten. Aus den Budgetbetrachtungen für HCHO und H2O2 wird eine Auswascheffizienz von (67±24) % für HCHO und (41±18) % für H2O2 abgeschätzt. Das für H2O2 überraschende Ergebnis lässt darauf schließen, dass dieses Molekül in einer Gewitterwolke deutlich effektiver transportiert werden kann, als aufgrund seiner hohen Löslichkeit aus der Henry-Konstanten zu erwarten wäre. Das Ausgasen von gelöstem H2O2 beim Gefrieren eines Wolkentropfens, d.h. ein Retentionskoeffizient kleiner 1, ist ein möglicher Mechanismus, der zum beobachteten Mischungsverhältnis dieser löslichen Spezies in der Ausströmregion beitragen kann.

In a world focused on the need to produce energy for a growing population, while reducing atmospheric emissions of carbon dioxide, organic Rankine cycles represent a solution to fulfil this goal. This study focuses on the design and optimization of axial-flow turbines for organic Rankine cycles. From the turbine designer point of view, most of this fluids exhibit some peculiar characteristics, such as small enthalpy drop, low speed of sound, large expansion ratio. A computational model for the prediction of axial-flow turbine performance is developed and validated against experimental data. The model allows to calculate turbine performance within a range of accuracy of ±3%. The design procedure is coupled with an optimization process, performed using a genetic algorithm where the turbine total-to-static efficiency represents the objective function. The computational model is integrated in a wider analysis of thermodynamic cycle units, by providing the turbine optimal design. First, the calculation routine is applied in the context of the Draugen offshore platform, where three heat recovery systems are compared. The turbine performance is investigated for three competing bottoming cycles: organic Rankine cycle (operating cyclopentane), steam Rankine cycle and air bottoming cycle. Findings indicate the air turbine as the most efficient solution (total-to-static efficiency = 0.89), while the cyclopentane turbine results as the most flexible and compact technology (2.45 ton/MW and 0.63 m3/MW). Furthermore, the study shows that, for organic and steam Rankine cycles, the optimal design configurations for the expanders do not coincide with those of the thermodynamic cycles. This suggests the possibility to obtain a more accurate analysis by including the computational model in the simulations of the thermodynamic cycles. Afterwards, the performance analysis is carried out by comparing three organic fluids: cyclopentane, MDM and R245fa. Results suggest MDM as the most effective fluid from the turbine performance viewpoint (total-to-total efficiency = 0.89). On the other hand, cyclopentane guarantees a greater net power output of the organic Rankine cycle (P = 5.35 MW), while R245fa represents the most compact solution (1.63 ton/MW and 0.20 m3/MW). Finally, the influence of the composition of an isopentane/isobutane mixture on both the thermodynamic cycle performance and the expander isentropic efficiency is investigated. Findings show how the mixture composition affects the turbine efficiency and so the cycle performance. Moreover, the analysis demonstrates that the use of binary mixtures leads to an enhancement of the thermodynamic cycle performance.
