This article aims to analyse the reasons for the intensive use of childlabour in the 19th century and its subsequent decline in the first thirdof the 20th century in the context of an economy with a highly flexiblelabour supply like that of Catalonia. During the second half of the 19thcentury,factors relating to family economies, such as numerous familiesand low wages for adults, along with the technologies of the time thatrequired manual labour resources, would appear to explain the intensiveuse of child labour to the detriment of schooling. The technologicalchanges that occurred during the first third of the 20th century, thedemographic transition and adult wage increase (for both men and women)explain the schooling of children up to the age of 15 and theconsequent practical abolition of child labour in that new era ofeconomic modernisation.

Constant interest rate (CIR) projections are often criticized on the grounds that they are inconsistent with the existence of a unique equilibrium in a variety of forward-looking models. This note shows howto construct CIR projections that are not subject to that criticism, using a standard New Keynesian model as a reference framework.

We lay out a small open economy version of the Calvo sticky price model, and show how the equilibrium dynamics can be reduced to simple representation in domestic inflation and the output gap. We use the resulting framework to analyze the macroeconomic implications of three alternative rule-based policy regimes for the small open economy: domestic inflation and CPI-based Taylor rules, and an exchange rate peg. We show that a key difference amongthese regimes lies in the relative amount of exchange rate volatility that they entail. We also discuss a special case for which domestic inflation targeting constitutes the optimal policy, and where a simple second order approximation to the utility of the representative consumer can be derived and used to evaluate the welfare losses associated with the suboptimal rules.

During the development and testing of a radioreceptor assay (RRA) for human IL-1, we have detected and identified the presence of auto-antibodies to IL-1 in normal human plasma (NHP). The RRA is based on the competition between human 125I-labeled rIL-1 alpha and standard or unknown quantities of IL-1 alpha or IL-1 beta for binding to a limited amounts of IL-1 receptor (IL-1R) isolated from the EL4 mouse thymoma cell line. NHP from 20 out of 100 unselected blood donors were found to completely inhibit the binding of 125I-labeled IL-1 alpha to its receptor, suggesting the presence in these NHP samples of either abnormal amounts of IL-1 or of a factor binding to the 125I-labeled IL-1 alpha. Special care was taken to ascertain that the inhibitory factors were antibodies and not soluble IL-1 receptor antagonist. When plasma samples with inhibiting activity were incubated with labeled IL-1 alpha and chromatographed on a Sephadex G200 column, they were found to contain 125I-labeled complexes with an apparent molecular weight of 150-200kD. The IL-1 binding factor could be eliminated from plasma by incubation with protein A-Sepharose, suggesting that it consisted in IgG antibodies directed against IL-1. Furthermore, the antibody nature of the inhibiting factor was confirmed by its binding to purified rIL-1 coupled to Sepharose. Screening of 200 NHP samples by incubation with 100 pg of 125I-labeled IL-1 followed by precipitation with 12% of polyethylene glycol (PEG) confirmed that about 25% of NHP contain detectable IgG antibodies to IL-1 alpha, while only 2% of NHP contain antibodies to IL-1 beta. No correlation between the presence of these anti-IL-1 antibodies and any particular major histocompatibility complex or any pathological conditions was detected. We suggest that all serum samples assayed for IL-1 alpha or IL-1 beta content should be pretested with the PEG precipitation assay described here.

This paper proposes a dynamic framework to study the timing of balance of paymentscrises. The model incorporates two main ingredients: (i) investors have private information; (ii)investors interact in a dynamic setting, weighing the high returns on domestic assets against the incentives to pull out before the devaluation. The model shows that the presence of disaggregated information delays the onset of BOP crises, giving rise to discrete devaluations. It also shows that high interest rates can be eective in delaying and possibly avoiding the abandonment of the peg. The optimal policy is to raise interest rates sharply as fundamentals become very weak. However, this policy is time inconsistent, suggesting a role for commitment devices such as currency boards or IMF pressure.

Background and aims: V itamin D is an important modulator o fnumerous c ellular processes, including innate and adaptive immunepathways. A recent large-scale genetic validation study performed withinthe framework of the Swiss Hepatitis C Cohort S tudy has demonstratedan association between t he 1α-hydroxylase promoter single nucleotidepolymorphism CYP27B1-1260 rs10877012 and sustained virologicresponse (SVR) after pegylated interferon-α ( PEG-IFN-α) plus ribavirintreatment of c hronic hepatitis C in patients w ith a p oor-response IL28Bgenotype. This suggests an intrinsic role o f vitamin D signaling in theresponse t o treatment of chronic hepatitis C, especially in patients withlimited sensitivity to IFN-α. In the present study, we investigated theeffect of 1,25-(OH)2 v itamin D3 (calcitriol) alone or in combination withIFN-α on the hepatitis C virus (HCV) life cycle in vitro. Methods: H uh-7.5 cells harboring Con1- or JFH-1-derived HCVreplicons or cell culture-derived HCV were exposed to 0.1-100 nMcalcitriol ± 1 -100 IU/ml IFN-α. The effect on HCV RNA replication andviral particle production was investigated by quantitative r eal-time PCR,immunoblot analyses, and infectivity titration analyses. The expression ofinterferon-stimulated genes (ISGs) and of calcitriol target genes wasassessed by quantitative real-time PCR.Results: Calcitriol had no relevant effect on the viability of Huh-7.5 cells.Calcitriol strongly induced and repressed the expression of the calcitrioltarget genes CYP24A1 and CCNC, respectively, confirming that Huh-7.5cells c an respond to c alcitriol signaling. P hysiological doses of calcitrioldid not significantly a ffect HCV RNA replication or i nfectious particleproduction in vitro, and calcitriol alone h ad no significant effect on theexpression of several ISGs. However, calcitriol in combination with IFN-αsubstantially increased the expression of ISGs compared to IFN-α alone. In addition, calcitriol plus IFN-α s ynergistically inhibited HCV RNAreplication. Conclusions: C alcitriol at physiological concentrations and IFN-α a ctsynergistically on the expression of I SGs and HCV RNA replication i nvitro. Experiments exploring the underlying mechanisms are underway.

A passive sampling device, called Monitor of NICotine (MoNIC), was constructed and evaluated by the laboratory of the Institute for Work and Health to determine nicotine in Environmental Tobacco Smoke (ETS). To support a large campaign on the subject of passive smoking, the CIPRET Valais gracefully distributed more than 1500 MoNIC badges to the Swiss population in order to measure ETS. Non-stimulated saliva was also collected to determine nicotine/cotinine levels of participating volunteers. The inhaled Cigarette Equivalents (CE) by non-smokers was calculated for non-smokers, based on a reference of 0.2 mg of nicotine per cigarette. Using the detected CE on the badge for non-smokers, and comparing it to the nicotine/cotinine levels in saliva, we could confirm the use of the CE concept for estimating exposure to ETS

Neural signatures of humans' movement intention can be exploited by future neuroprosthesis. We propose a method for detecting self-paced upper limb movement intention from brain signals acquired with both invasive and noninvasive methods. In the first study with scalp electroencephalograph (EEG) signals from healthy controls, we report single trial detection of movement intention using movement related potentials (MRPs) in a frequency range between 0.1 to 1 Hz. Movement intention can be detected above chance level (p<0.05) on average 460 ms before the movement onset with low detection rate during the on-movement intention period. Using intracranial EEG (iEEG) from one epileptic subject, we detect movement intention as early as 1500 ms before movement onset with accuracy above 90% using electrodes implanted in the bilateral supplementary motor area (SMA). The coherent results obtained with non-invasive and invasive method and its generalization capabilities across different days of recording, strengthened the theory that self-paced movement intention can be detected before movement initiation for the advancement in robot-assisted neurorehabilitation.

Two-dimensional agarose gel electrophoresis, psoralen cross-linking, and electron microscopy were used to study the effects of positive supercoiling on fork reversal in isolated replication intermediates of bacterial DNA plasmids. The results obtained demonstrate that the formation of Holliday-like junctions at both forks of a replication bubble creates a topological constraint that prevents further regression of the forks. We propose that this topological locking of replication intermediates provides a biological safety mechanism that protects DNA molecules against extensive fork reversals.
