Knowing the genetic parameters of productive and reproductive traits in milking buffaloes is essential for planning and implementing of a program genetic selection. In Brazil, this information is still scarce. The objective of this study was to verify the existence of genetic variability in milk yield of buffaloes and their constituents, and reproductive traits for the possibility of application of the selection. A total of 9,318 lactations records from 3,061 cows were used to estimate heritabilities for milk yield (MY), fat percentage (%F), protein percentage (%P), length of lactation (LL), age of first calving (AFC) and calving interval (CI) and the genetic correlations among traits MY, %F and %P. The (co) variance components were estimated using multiple-trait analysis by Bayesian inference method, applying an animal model, through Gibbs sampling. The model included the fixed effects of contemporary groups (herd-year and calving season), number of milking (2 levels), and age of cow at calving as (co) variable (quadratic and linear effect). The additive genetic, permanent environmental, and residual effects were included as random effects in the model. Estimated heritability values for MY, % F, % P, LL, AFC and CI were 0.24, 0.34, 0.40, 0.09, 0.16 and 0.05, respectively. The genetic correlation estimates among MY and % F, MY and % P and % F and % P were -0.29, -0.18 and 0.25, respectively. The production of milk and its constituents showed enough genetic variation to respond to a selection program. Negative estimates of genetic correlations between milk production and its components suggest that selection entails a reduction in the other.

The consuming of the natural resources in the agricultural sector does not represent only one external factor of the productive process, but also it implies in a bigger cost for the production, justified for this environmental degradation. In view of the necessity of evaluating the sustainment of the agricultural businesses, the use of performance indicators if makes of extreme importance. The measurement of the support through environmentalindicators is one of the most accepted forms of performing the evaluation of one given agricultural activity. In this context, the Base System for Eco-certification of Agricultural Businesses (Eco-cert Rural) developed by the Embrapa Environment at Jaguariúna/SP, has for purpose to present a method of evaluation of the agricultural businesses, not only of the point of view of the ecological performance, as well as considering the social, economic and organizational aspects. Through the analysis of the performance of the activity and the regularization of the disconformities found, it makes possible the eco-certification of the activities in the varied existing protocols, offering technologies designed to the sustainable development of the agricultural businesses. Using Eco-cert.Rural, this work evaluated the contribution of the use of mechanized harvest in sugar cane handling, front to the traditional system of manual harvest, using the fire. In the Sugar Cane Activity General Performance Index, Agrícola Rio Claro scored 2,08 of a maximum of 15. Amongst all the indicators, those wich reached performance worse had been related to the Use of Energy and the Income, by increasing fossil fuel consumptiom, and implying income concentration due to resignations of rural workers. However, the improvements on the environment quality by supressing manual harvest through fire are very significant. Beyond the great reduction in...(Complete abstract click electronic access below)

This study aimed to gather the determinants and indicators of environmental innovations through a literature review on the topic. But before it was made a presentation of concepts and typology of eco-innovation, with different points of view. The determinant more found by most authors was regulation, followed by market factors, cost reductions and company image. To highlight these determinants were presented some cases studies, including evidence in Brazil. Due to the short bibliography and case studies, there are few indicators of environmental innovation found, highlighting the investment in environmental R&D and patents

This paper aims at proposing a discussion on the role of education in a pragmatic plot. It intends to offer some contributions to the consolidation in the essence of sustainable development and of a contextualized sustainability as well as its respective dimensions. Therefore, some conceptual evolutions of such expressions and the implications for when they are being used, especially parallel to the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development, UNESCO (2005-2014) are presented. This paper also intends to promote some reflection on how much environmental and general education are important with regard to the challenge of multidimensional balance proposed, as seen from the perspective of a paradigm that has been constantly shaped since the Stockholm Conference of 1972, going through the given contributions in 1992 by The Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro – Eco 92 / Rio 92; and from there to the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, of Rio+20, in 2012.

This article describes a new approach of recycling the leather waste (shavings) using it as filler in natural rubber foams composites. The foams were prepared using different amounts of leather waste (0-60 parts per hundred of rubber) and submitted to morphological (SEM microscopy) and mechanical analyses (cyclic stress-strain compression). The increase of leather shavings on the composite causes an increase of viscosity in the mixture, which reflects in the foaming process. This results in smaller and fairly uniform cells. Furthermore, expanded rubber has the biggest cell size, with more than 70% of cell with 1000 mu m, while the composite with the higher concentration of leather has around 80% of total number of cells with 100-400 mu m. The mechanical parameters were found to depend on the leather dust concentration. Moreover, the stiffness rises with the increase of leather shavings; consequently, the compression force for expanded rubber was 0.126 MPa as well as the composite with higher concentration of leather was 7.55 MPa. The increasing number of space debris in operating regions around the earth constitutes a real threat to space missions. The goal of the research is to establish appropriate scientific-technological conditions to prevent the destruction and/or impracticability of spacecraft in imminent collision in these regions. A definitive solution to this problem has not yet been reached with the degree of precision that the dynamics of spatial objects (vehicle and debris) requires mainly due to the fact that collisions occur in chains and fragmentation of these objects in the space environment. This fact threatens the space missions on time and with no prospects for a solution in the near future. We present an optimization process in finding the initial conditions (CIC) to collisions, considering the symmetry of the distributions of maximum relative positions between spatial objects with respect to the spherical angles. For this, we used the equations of the dynamics on the Clohessy-Witshire, representing a limit of validation that is highly computationally costly. We simulate different maximum relative positions values of the corresponding initial conditions given in terms of spherical angles. Our results showed that there are symmetries that significantly reduce operating costs, such that the search of the CIC is advantageously carried out up to 4 times the initial processing routine. Knowledge of CIC allows the propulsion system operating vehicle implement evasive maneuvers before impending collisions with space debris.

The optimized δ-expansion is used to study vacuum polarization effects in the Walecka model. The optimized δ-expansion is a nonperturbative approach for field theoretic models which combines the techniques of perturbation theory and the variational principle. Vacuum effects on self-energies and the energy density of nuclear matter are studied up to script O sign(δ2). When exchange diagrams are neglected, the traditional relativistic Hartree approximation (RHA) results are exactly reproduced and, using the same set of parameters that saturate nuclear matter in the RHA, a new stable, tightly bound state at high density is found.
