Previously published measurements in a low-speed, single-stage, axial-flow turbine have been reanalyzed in the light of more recent understanding. The measurements include time-resolved hot-wire traverses and surface hot film gage measurements at the midspan of the rotor suction surface with three different rotor-stator spacings. This paper investigates the suction surface boundary layer transition process, using surface-distance time plots and boundary layer cross sections to demonstrate the unsteady and two-dimensional nature of the process.

This paper describes a series of tests conducted on a UK trunk road, in which the dynamic tyre forces generated by over 1500 heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) were measured using a load measuring mat containing 144 capacitive strip sensors. The data was used to investigate the relative road damaging potential of the various classes of vehicles, and the degree of spatial repeatability of tyre forces present in a typical highway fleet. Approximately half the vehicles tested were found to contribute to a spatially repeatable pattern of pavement loading. On average, air suspended vehicles were found to generate lower dynamic load coefficients than steel suspended vehicles. However, air suspended vehicles also generated higher mean levels of theoretical road damage (aggregate force) than steel suspended vehicles, indicating that the ranking of suspensions depends on the pavement damage criterion used.

The stability of the underground structure is very important not only from the point of view of the structure itself, but also from the point of view of other structures. Therefore, the evaluation of the process of deterioration can help us very much. In the first part of the paper the ageing of the structures in the scope of their life cycle will be described. The whole process of deterioration is important but limited to certain time intervals and is able to give signals about changes in macro-scale. The second part of the paper is focused on the adaptation of new methods: micro technology of monitoring - such as MEMS (Micro Electrical Mechanical Systems) and wireless technologies for data transfer. It is obvious that such new technologies have to be assessed for the ability to deliver data continuously and for their safety and solidity. At the end of the paper the application of the measurements on the Prague metro's lining is mentioned. © 2007 Taylor & Francis Group.

We have extended our previous work (Rawlings et al 2010 Phys. Rev. B 82 085404) on simulating magnetic force microscopy (MFM) images for magnetically soft samples to include an accurate representation of coated MFM tips. We used an array of square 500 nm nanomagnets to evaluate our improved MFM model. A quantitative comparison between model and experiment was performed for lift heights ranging from 20 to 100 nm. No fitting parameters were used in our comparison. For all lift heights the qualitative agreement between model and experiment was significantly improved. At low lift heights, where the magnetic signal was strong, the difference between theory and experiment was less than 30%.

We describe new results on the vibrations of rolling tyres, aimed at noise prediction for tyres of given design on a smooth road surface. This new approach incorporates our existing models, of smooth road-tyre interaction and belt vibration but includes additional features that are required for real tyre patterns. To this end, the model allows variable tread block size and grooves along the belt circumference; the density and angle of these grooves may also vary laterally. The key innovation is to treat the tyre belt as a laterally stacked series of rings, each of which is equipped with a set of viscoelastic springs around its circumference. It is shown how to use this construction to mimic the details of actual tyre patterns and, in conjunction with existing models, predict belt vibrations. The construction is applied to develop a ring discretisation for a real tyre that shows strong lateral variations. It is shown that the vibration amplitude is concentrated on a set of parallel lines in frequency-wavenumber space and that the tread pattern dictates the occurrence and spacing of these lines. Linkage to a boundary element calculation then allows quantification of the influence of tread parameters on radiated noise. Keywords: Vibration, tread pattern, tyre noise. This article describes the application of the light-attenuation technique as a tool for measuring dilution occurring in buoyancy-driven flows. Whilst this technique offers the experimental fluid dynamicist the ability to make rapid synoptic buoyancy measurements non-intrusively, its successful application requires careful selection of chemical dye, dye concentration, illumination and optics. After establishing the advantages offered by methylene blue as a dyeing agent, we assess the accuracy of buoyancy measurements made using this technique compared with direct measurements made with density meters. Density measurements obtained using light-attenuation differ from those obtained using the density meter by typically less than 3%. It is hoped that this article will provide useful advice with regards to its implementation in the field of buoyancy-driven flows. © 2011 Elsevier Inc.

In this study, we investigated non-ideal characteristics of a diamond Schottky barrier diode with Molybdenum (Mo) Schottky metal fabricated by Microwave Plasma Chemical Vapour Deposition (MPCVD) technique. Extraction from forward bias I-V and reverse bias C- 2-V measurements yields ideality factor of 1.3, Schottky barrier height of 1.872 eV, and on-resistance of 32.63 mö·cm2. The deviation of extracted Schottky barrier height from an ideal value of 2.24 eV (considering Mo workfunction of 4.53 eV) indicates Fermi level pinning at the interface. We attributed such non-ideal behavior to the existence of thin interfacial layer and interface states between metal and diamond which forms Metal-Interfacial layer-Semiconductor (MIS) structure. Oxygen surface treatment during fabrication process might have induced them. From forward bias C-V characteristics, the minimum thickness of the interfacial layer is approximately 0.248 nm. Energy distribution profile of the interface state density is then evaluated from the forward bias I-V characteristics based on the MIS model. The interface state density is found to be uniformly distributed with values around 1013 eV - 1·cm- 2. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

Shubnikov-de Haas measurements were carried out for In0.52Al0.48As/InxGa1-xAs metamorphic high-electron-mobility-transistor structures grown on GaAs substrates with different indium contents and/or different Si delta-doping concentrations. Zero-field (B-->0) spin splitting was found in samples with stronger conduction band bending in the InGaAs well. It was shown that the dominant spin splitting mechanism is attributed to the contribution by the Rashba term. We found that zero-field spin splitting not only occurs in the ground electron subband, but also in the first excited electron subband for a sample with Si delta-doping concentration of 6x10(12) cm(-2). We propose that this In0.52Al0.48As/InxGa1-xAs metamorphic high-electron-mobility-transistor structure grown on GaAs may be a promising candidate spin-polarized field-effect transistors. Erbium-implanted silicones were treated by lamp-heating rapid thermal annealing (RTA). Two types of erbium-related photoluminescence spectra appear under different anneal temperatures. 750 degrees C annealing optimizes the luminescence intensity, which does not change with anneal time. Exciton-mediated energy transfer model in erbium-doped silicon was presented. The emission intensity is related to optical active erbium concentration, lifetime of excited Er3+ ion and spontaneous emission time. The thermal quenching of the erbium luminescence in Si is caused by thermal ionization of erbium-bound exciton complex and nonradiative energy backtransfer processes, which correspond to the activation energy of 6.6 meV and 47.4 meV respectively.
