In this work, a study of the nematic (N)-isotropic (I) phase transition has been made in a series of odd non-symmetric liquid crystal dimers, the alpha-(4-cyanobiphenyl-4'-yloxy)-omega-(1-pyrenimine-benzylidene-4'-oxy) alkanes, by means of accurate calorimetric and dielectric measurements. These materials are potential candidates to present the elusive biaxial nematic (N-B) phase, as they exhibit both molecular biaxiality and flexibility. According to the theory, the uniaxial nematic (N-U)-isotropic (I) phase transition is first-order in nature, whereas the N-B-I phase transition is second-order. Thus, a fine analysis of the critical behavior of the N-I phase transition would allow us to determine the presence or not of the biaxial nematic phase and understand how the molecular biaxiality and flexibility of these compounds influences the critical behavior of the N-I phase transition.

Real-time phase shift Mach-Zehnder interference technique, imaging technique, and computer image processing technique were combined to perform a real-time diagnosis of NaClO3 crystal, which described both the dissolution process and the crystallization process of the NaClO3 crystal in real-time condition. The dissolution fringes and the growth fringes in the process were obtained. Moreover, a distribution of concentration field in this process was obtained by inversion calculation. Finally, the buoyancy convection phenomenon caused by gravity in the crystal growth process was analyzed. The results showed that this convection phenomenon directly influences the growth rate of each crystal face in the crystal.

The investigation of the effect of micro impurity on crystal growth by optical microscopy has been validated. The results showed that the growth rate of a lysozyme crystal was affected even if the concentration of impurity of fluorescent-labeled lysozyme (abbreviation, F-lysozyme) was very small. Different concentrations of F-lysozyme had different effects on crystal growth rate. The growth rate decreased much more as F-lysozyme concentration increased. The density of incorporated F-lysozyme on different grown layers of a lysozyme crystal during crystal growth was obtained from the results of flat-bottomed etch pits density. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. We have improved the ordinary total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy (TIRFM). Two improvements have been achieved, one is the interface between opaque material and solution can be observed, another is the interface far away (usually several ten micro meters) the objective lens can be observed. By this improved TIRFM, the adsorption of protein molecules at a crystal/solution interface had been successfully observed. We have obtained the results of relationship between the amount of adsorbed protein molecules on bunched steps and the height of bunched steps of a protein crystal.

We report on the upconversion luminescence of a pure YVO4 single crystal excited by an infrared femtosecond laser. The luminescent spectra show that the upconversion luminescence comes from the transitions from the lowest excited states T-3(1), T-3(2) to the ground state (1)A(1) of the VO43-. The dependence of the fluorescence intensity on the pump power density of laser indicates that the conversion of infrared irradiation to visible emission is dominated by three-photon excitation process. We suggest that the simultaneous absorption of three infrared photons promotes the VO43- to excited states, which quickly cascade down to lowest excited states, and radiatively relax to ground states, resulting in the broad characteristic fluorescence of VO43-. A theoretical investigation of the nonlinear copropagation of two optical pulses of different frequencies in a photonic crystal fiber is presented. Different phenomena are observed depending on whether the wavelength of the signal pulse is located in the normal or the anomalous dispersion region. In particular, it is found that the phenomenon of pulse trapping occurs when the signal wavelength is located in the normal dispersion region while the pump wavelength is located in the anomalous dispersion region. The signal pulse suffers cross-phase modulation by the Raman shifted soliton pulse and it is trapped and copropagates with the Raman soliton pulse along the fiber. As the input peak power of the pump pulse is increased, the red-shift of the Raman soliton is considerably enhanced with the simultaneous further blue-shift of the trapped pulse to satisfy the condition of group velocity matching.

An optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification system is demonstrated to provide 32.9% pump-to-signal conversion efficiency . Special techniques are used to make the signal and pump pulses match with each other in both spectral and temporal domains. The broadband 9.5-mJ pulses are produced at the repetition rate of 1 Hz with the gain of over 1.9 x 10(8). The output energy fluctuation of 7.8% is achieved for the saturated amplification process against the pump fluctuation of 10%.

This paper reports self-organized nanostructures observed on the surface of ZnO crystal after irradiation by a focused beam of a femtosecond Ti:sapphire laser with a repetition rate of 250 kHz. For a linearly polarized femtosecond laser, the periodic nanograting structure on the ablation crater surface was promoted. The period of self-organization structures is about 180 nm. The grating orientation is adjusted by the laser polarization direction. A long range Bragg-like grating is formed by moving the sample at a speed of 10 mu m/s. For a circularly polarized laser beam, uniform spherical nanoparticles were formed as a result of Coulomb explosion during the interaction of near-infrared laser with ZnO crystal.
