The purpose of this study was to evaluate methods for predicting availability of Zn in soils. Surface soil samples representing Podzolized soils from Lins and Marilia var. Marilia and var. Lins, medium texture Dark-Red Latosol, Dusky-Red Latosol and Terra Roxa Estruturada, were gathered from fields in Jaboticabal, SP, Brazil. Com was used as indicator plant in a greenhouse experiment. Availability of Zn was determined with: 0.5 M CaCl2, 2.0 N MgCl2, N CH3COONH4 (pH 6.0 and 4.8), 0.05 and 0.1 N HCl, 0.05 N H2SO4, 0.005 M DTPA (pH 7.3 and 6.0), 1.0% Na2-EDTA, 0.01 M EDTA + 1.0 M (NH4)2CO3 (pH 8.6) and 0.02 M EDTA + 0.5 M CH3COOH + 0.5 M CH3COONH4. By using the simple correlation coefficients (Zn extracted from soils x absorbed by plants it can be concluded that the complexant agents and acid solutions showed to be efficient. The salt solutions showed low extraction capacity, low correlation coefficients and less accuracy. By considering aspects as accuracy and easy management DTPA pH 7,3 and Na2-EDTA can be indicated as the most apropriates (r values, respectively, 0.873** and 0.868** and V.C. 7.52% and 7.98%).

This study investigated the effects of bilateral injections of the local anesthetic, lidocaine, into the lateral parabrachial nucleus (LPBN) on the dipsogenic and presser responses induced by intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) injection of angiotensin II (ANG II). Centrally injected ANG II (50 ng/l mu l) induced water intake (10.2 +/- 0.8 ml/h) and presser responses (22 +/- 1 mmHg). Prior bilateral injection of 10% lidocaine (200 nl) into the LPBN increased the water intake (14.2 +/- 1.4 ml/h), but did not change the presser response (17 +/- 1 mmHg) to i.c.v. ANG II. Lidocaine alone injected into the LPBN also induced a presser response (23 +/- 3 mmHg). These results showing that bilateral LPBN injection of lidocaine increase water intake induced by i.c.v. ANG II are consistent with electrolytic and neurotoxic lesion studies and suggest that the LPBN is associated with inhibitory mechanisms controlling water intake induced by ANG II. These results also provide evidence that it is feasible to reversibly anesthetize this brain area to facilitate fluid-related ingestive behavior.

The determination of the diet and feeding habits is one of the principal aspects of the study on fish biology, as feeding is a basic process and its study is necessary for the understanding of the populations' dynamic and ecology. The Sciaenidae family has a significant occurrence in the bay's demersal ichthyofauna, constituting an important fishing resource. The goal of this work was to analyze how the partitioning of available food resources takes place among the ten sciaenid species which live in the Flamengo Bay. One single survey, consisting of three trawls, was carried out with a fishing boat equipped with two otter-trawl. Diet analysis showed that all species are exclusively carnivore, using several items as food, but crustaceans are the main food ingested. The use of the ''Proportional Overlap Index'' showed possible overlapping between six couples of species but in the majority of cases, morphologic differences between these species, such as the mouth position, probably determine different foraging strategies.

1. Intracerebroventricular (I.C.V.) infusion (60 ng h-1) of Isoleu5-angiotensin II (Isoleu5-AngII) and des-amine-angiotensin II (des-amine-AngII) in rats caused increased drinking behaviour and an increase in arterial blood pressure.2. Des-amine-AngII caused similar increases in heart rate and arterial blood pressure as AngII.3. Previous I.C.V. injection of the antagonists [Leu8]-AngII, des-amine-[Leu8]-AngII and octanoyl-[Leu8]-AngII prevented the increases in heart rate and blood pressure produced by I.C.V. infusion of AngII and caused partial reduction of the dipsogenic response.4. The three antagonists had no effect on the increase in arterial blood pressure and heart rate caused by des-amine-AngII. The drinking response was reduced by previous injection of [Leu8]-AngII and des-amine-[Leu8]-AngII but not by octanoyl-[Leu8]-AngII.5. In conclusion, Isoleu5-AngII and des-amine-AngII increase drinking behaviour, arterial blood pressure and heart rate when infused into the cerebral ventricle of rats. The study with the antagonists showed that des-amine-AngII probably binds more strongly to AngII-receptors.

Er3+ doped SnO2 xerogels have been obtained from aqueous colloidal suspensions. Emission and excitation spectra were obtained and allowed the identification of two main families of sites for Er3+. In the first one Er3+ substitutes for Sn4+ in the SnO2 cassiterite structure. In the second Er3+ are found adsorbed at the SnO2 particle surface. For the first family of sites the technological important infrared Er3+ emission about 1.5 mum is efficiently excited through absorption at the SnO2 conduction band at 3.8 eV. on the other hand the emission due to adsorbed ions appears inhomogeneously broadened by the statistical distribution of sites available for Er3+ ions at the surface of the particles. Moreover it is not excited by the host. The emission of this second family of sites could be also excited by an energy transfer mechanism involving Yb3+ ions also adsorbed a posteriori at particles surface. Barium strontium titanate (Ba0.65Sr0.35TiO3) nanocrystalline thin films, which were produced by the soft chemical method, were crystallized at low temperature using a domestic microwave oven. A SiC susceptor were used to absorb the microwave energy and rapidly transfer the heat to the film. Low microwave power and short time have been used. The films obtained are crack-free, well-adhered, and fully crystallized. The microstructure displayed a polycrystalline nature with nanograin size. The metal-BST-metal structure of the thin films treated at 700 degrees C show food electric properties. The ferroelectric nature of the BST35 thin film was indicated by buttertly- shaped C-V curves. The capacitance-frequency curves reveal that the dielectric constant may reach a value up to 800 at 100kHz. The dissipation factor was 0.01 at 100kHz. The charge storage density as function of applied voltage graph showed that the charge storage densities are suitable for use in trench type 64 Mb ( 1-5 mu C/cm(2) and 265 Mb (2-11 mu C/cm(2)) DRAMs. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. The effect of Sb doping in SnO2 thin films prepared by the sol-gel dip-coating (SGDC) process is investigated. Electronic and structural properties are evaluated through synchrotron radiation measurements by EXAFS and XANES. These data indicate that antimony is in the oxidation state W, and replaces tin atoms (Sn4+), at a grain surface site. Although the substitution yields net free carrier concentration, the electrical conductivity is increased only slightly, because it is reduced by the high grain boundary scattering. The overall picture leads to a shortening of the grain boundary potential, where oxygen vacancies compensate for oxygen adsorbed species, decreasing the trapped charge at grain boundary. Ferroelectric PbTiO3 thin films were successfully prepared on a Pt(111)Ti/SiO2/Si(100) substrate for the first time by spin coating, using the polymeric precursor method. X-ray diffraction patterns of the films indicate that they are polycrystalline in nature. This method allows low temperature (500 degrees C) synthesis and high electrical properties. The multilayer PbTiO3 thin films were granular in structure with a grain size of approximately 110-120 nm. A 380-nm-thick film was obtained by carrying out four cycles of the spin-coating/heating process. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) analyses showed the surface of these thin films to be smooth, dense and crack-free with low surface roughness (=3.4 nm). At room temperature and at a frequency of 100 kHz, the dielectric constant and the dissipation factor were, respectively, 570 and 0.016. The C-V characteristics of perovskite thin film prepared at low temperature show normal ferrolectric behavior. The remanent polarization and coercive field for the films deposited were 13.62 mu C/cm(2) and 121.43 kV/cm, respectively. The high electrical property values are attributed to the excellent microstrutural quality and chemical homogeneity of thin films obtained by the polymeric precursor method. (C) 2000 Elsevier B.V. In this study we investigated: (a) the effects of intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) injections of moxonidine (an alpha(2)-adrenergic and imidazoline receptor agonist) on the ingestion of water and NaCl induced by 24 h of water deprivation; (b) the effects of i.c.v. injection of moxonidine on central angiotensin II (ANG II)- and carbachol-induced water intake; (c) the effects of the pre-treatment with i.c.v, idazoxan (an alpha(2)-adrenergic and imidazoline receptor antagonist) and RX 821002 (a selective alpha(2)-adrenergic antagonist) on the antidipsogenic action of central moxonidine. Male Holtzman rats had stainless steel cannulas implanted in the lateral cerebral ventricle. Intracerebroventricular injection of moxonidine (5 and 20 nmol/1 mu l) reduced the ingestion of 1.5% NaCl solution (4.1 +/- 1.1 and 2.9 +/- 2.5 ml/2 h, respectively vs. control = 7.4 +/- 2.1 ml/2 h) and water intake (2.0 +/- 0.6 and 0.3 +/- 0.2 ml/h, respectively vs. control = 13.0 +/- 1.4 ml/h) induced by water deprivation, Intracerebroventricular moxonidine (5 nmol/1 mu l) also reduced i.c.v. ANG Ii-induced water intake (2.8 +/- 0.9 vs. control = 7.9 +/- 1.7 ml/1 h) and i.c.v. moxonidine (10 and 20 nmol/1 mu l) reduced i.c.v. carbachol-induced water intake (4.3 +/- 1.7 and 2.1 +/- 0.9, respectively vs. control = 9.2 +/- 1.0 ml/1 h). The pre-treatment with i.c.v. idazoxan (40 to 320 nmol/1 mu l) abolished the inhibitory effect of i.c.v, moxonidine on carbachol-induced water intake. Intracerebroventricular idazoxan (320 nmol/1 mu l) partially reduced the inhibitory effect of moxonidine on water deprivation-induced water intake and produced only a tendency to reduce the antidipsogenic effect of moxonidine on ANG Ii-induced water intake. RX 821002 (80 and 160 nmol/1 mu l) completely abolished the antidipsogenic action of moxonidine on ANG Ii-induced water intake. The results show that central injections c: moxonidine strongly inhibit water and NaCl ingestion. They also suggest the involvement of central alpha(2)-adrenergic receptors in the antidipsogenic action of moxonidine. (C) 1999 Elsevier B.V.

Angiotensin (Ang)II is involved in responses to hypovolaemia, such as sodium appetite and increase in blood pressure, Target areas subserving these responses for AngII include the cardiovascular system in the periphery and the circumventricular organs in the brain.2. Conflicting data have been reported for the role of systemic versus brain AngII in the mediation of sodium appetite.3. The role for systemic AngII and systemic AngII receptors in the control of blood pressure in hypovolaemia is well established. In contrast with systemic injections, i.c.v injections of AngII non-peptide AT(1) and AT(2) receptor antagonists, such as losartan and PD123319, do not reduce arterial pressure in sodium-depleted (furosemide injection plus removal of ambient sodium for 24 h) rats. Thus, brain AngII receptors are likely not important for cardiovascular responses to hypovolaemia induced by sodium depletion.4. Intracerebroventricular injections of losartan or PD 123319 increase arterial pressure when injected at relatively high doses. This hypertensive effect is unlikely to be an agonist effect on brain AngII receptors, Increases in arterial pressure produced by i.c.v, losartan are attenuated by lesions of the tissue surrounding the anterior third ventricle (AV3V). The hypertensive effect of i.c.v, AngII is abolished by lesions of the AV3V.5. Hypertension induced by AngII receptor antagonists is consistent with hypotension induced by AngII acting in the brain, However, the full physiological significance of this hypotensive effect mediated by brain AngII receptors remains to be determined.

Whereas genome sequencing defines the genetic potential of an organism, transcript sequencing defines the utilization of this potential and links the genome with most areas of biology. To exploit the information within the human genome in the fight against cancer, we have deposited some two million expressed sequence tags (ESTs) from human tumors and their corresponding normal tissues in the public databases. The data currently define approximate to23,500 genes, of which only approximate to1,250 are still represented only by ESTs. Examination of the EST coverage of known cancer-related (CR) genes reveals that <1% do not have corresponding ESTs, indicating that the representation of genes associated with commonly studied tumors is high. The careful recording of the origin of all ESTs we have produced has enabled detailed definition of where the genes they represent are expressed in the human body. More than 100,000 ESTs are available for seven tissues, indicating a surprising variability of gene usage that has led to the discovery of a significant number of genes with restricted expression, and that may thus be therapeutically useful. The ESTs also reveal novel nonsynonymous germline variants (although the one-pass nature of the data necessitates careful validation) and many alternatively spliced transcripts. Although widely exploited by the scientific community, vindicating our totally open source policy, the EST data generated still provide extensive information that remains to be systematically explored, and that may further facilitate progress toward both the understanding and treatment of human cancers.

In the present work, electroactive grain boundaries of highly dense metal oxide SnO2-based polycrystalline varistors were determined by electrostatic force microscopy (EFM). The EFM technique was applied to identify electroactive grain boundaries and thus estimate the amount of active grain boundary, which, in the metal oxide SnO2-based varistor, was calculated at around 85%, i.e., much higher than that found in traditional metal oxide ZnO-based varistors. The mean potential barrier height value obtained from the EFM analysis was in complete agreement with the values calculated from the C-V measurements, together with a complex capacitance plane analysis that validates the methodology proposed here.
