From the late 1860s, opera for Dvorák, along with many composers of the Czech national revival, was an abiding preoccupation. This article examines Dvorak’s relationship with his librettists, his approach to their texts, and the extent to which he was prepared to mould their content. While there is no surviving correspondence between Dvorák and the librettist of his last opera, Jaroslav Vrchlický, a copy of the libretto of Armida with annotations in both Vrchlický’s and Dvorák’s hands was found in 2007 among the writer’s papers. Although Dvorák’s stage sense has often been called into question, it is clear that his interventions in the libretto of Armida, in the first and last acts in particular, show a practical, theatrical approach that did much to enhance the dramatic impact of Armida’s first entry and the final chorus of the opera.

Glucagon-like peptide-1(7-36)amide (tGLP-1) has attracted considerable potential as a possible therapeutic agent for type 2 diabetes. However, tGLP-1 is rapidly inactivated in vivo by the exopeptidase dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP IV), thereby terminating its insulin releasing activity. The present study has examined the ability of a novel analogue, His(7)-glucitol tGLP-1 to resist plasma degradation and enhance the insulin-releasing and antihyperglycemic activity of the peptide in 20-25-week-old obese diabetic ob/ob mice. Degradation of native tGLP-1 by incubation at 37 degreesC with obese mouse plasma was clearly evident after 3 h (35% intact). After 6 h, more than 87% of tGLP-1 was converted to GLP-1(9-36)amide and two further N-terminal fragments, GLP-1(7-28) and GLP-1(9-28). In contrast, His7-glucitol tGLP-1 was completely resistant to N-terminal degradation. The formation of GLP-1(9-36)amide from native tGLP-1 was almost totally abolished by addition of diprotin A, a specific inhibitor of DPP IV. Effects of tGLP-1 and His7-glucitol tGLP-1 were examined in overnight fasted obese mice following i.p. injection of either peptide (30 nmol/kg) together with glucose (18 mmol/kg) or in association with feeding. Plasma glucose was significantly lower and insulin response greater following administration of His7-glucitol tGLP-1 as compared to glucose alone. Native tGLP-1 lacked antidiabetic effects under the conditions employed, and neither peptide influenced the glucose-lowering action of exogenous insulin (50 units/kg). Twice daily s.c. injection of ob/ob mice with His(7)-glucitol tGLP-1 (10 nmol/kg) for 7 days reduced fasting hyperglycemia and greatly augmented the plasma insulin response to the peptides given in association with feeding. These data demonstrate that His(7)-glucitol tGLP-1 displays resistance to plasma DPP IV degradation and exhibits antihyperglycemic activity and substantially enhanced insulin-releasing action in a commonly used animal model of type 2 diabetes. A Web-service based approach is presented which enables geographically dispersed users to share software resources over the Internet. A service-oriented software sharing system has been developed, which consists of shared applications, client applications and three types of services: application proxy service, proxy implementation service and application manager service. With the aids of the services, the client applications interact with the shared applications to implement a software sharing task. The approach satisfies the requirements of copyright protection and reuse of legacy codes. In this paper, the role of Web-services and the architecture of the system are presented first, followed by a case study to illustrate the approach developed.

For any proposed software project, when the software requirements specification has been established, requirements changes may result in not only a modification of the requirements specification but also a series of modifications of all existing artifacts during the development. Then it is necessary to provide effective and flexible requirements changes management. In this paper, we present an approach to managing requirements changes based on Booth’s negotiation-style framework for belief revision. Informally, we consider the current requirements specification as a belief set about the system-to-be. The request of requirements change is viewed as new information about the same system-to-be. Then the process of executing the requirements change is a process of revising beliefs about the system-to-be. We design a family of belief negotiation models appropriate for different processes of requirements revision, including the setting of the request of requirements change being fully accepted, the setting of the current requirements specification being fully preserved, and that of the current specification and the request of requirements change reaching a compromise. In particular, the prioritization of requirements plays an important role in reaching an agreement in each belief negotiation model designed in this paper.

Purpose: The aim of this study is to compare the sensitivity of different metrics to detect differences in complexity of intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) plans following upgrades, changes to planning parameters, and patient geometry. Correlations between complexity metrics are also assessed.
