Different types of land use are usually present in the areas adjacent to many shallow karst cavities. Over time, the increasing amount of potentially harmful matter and energy, of mainly anthropic origin or influence, that reaches the interior of a shallow karst cavity can modify the hypogeal ecosystem and increase the risk of damage to the Palaeolithic rock art often preserved within the cavity. This study proposes a new Protected Area status based on the geological processes that control these matter and energy fluxes into the Altamira cave karst system. Analysis of the geological characteristics of the shallow karst system shows that direct and lateral infiltration, internal water circulation, ventilation, gas exchange and transmission of vibrations are the processes that control these matter and energy fluxes into the cave. This study applies a comprehensive methodological approach based on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to establish the area of influence of each transfer process. The stratigraphic and structural characteristics of the interior of the cave were determined using 3D Laser Scanning topography combined with classical field work, data gathering, cartography and a porosity–permeability analysis of host rock samples. As a result, it was possible to determine the hydrogeological behavior of the cave. In addition, by mapping and modeling the surface parameters it was possible to identify the main features restricting hydrological behavior and hence direct and lateral infiltration into the cave. These surface parameters included the shape of the drainage network and a geomorphological and structural characterization via digital terrain models. Geological and geomorphological maps and models integrated into the GIS environment defined the areas involved in gas exchange and ventilation processes. Likewise, areas that could potentially transmit vibrations directly into the cave were identified. This study shows that it is possible to define a Protected Area by quantifying the area of influence related to each transfer process. The combined maximum area of influence of all the processes will result in the new Protected Area. This area will thus encompass all the processes that account for most of the matter and energy carried into the cave and will fulfill the criteria used to define the Protected Area. This methodology is based on the spatial quantification of processes and entities of geological origin and can therefore be applied to any shallow karst system that requires protection.

During limb development, expression of the TALE homeobox transcription factor Meis1 is activated by retinoic acid in the proximal-most limb bud regions, which give rise to the upper forelimb and hindlimb. Early subdivision of the limb bud into proximal Meis-positive and distal Meis-negative domains is necessary for correct proximo-distal (P-D) limb development in the chick, since ectopic Meis1 overexpression abolishes distal limb structures, produces a proximal shift of limb identities along the P-D axis, and proximalizes distal limb cell affinity properties. To determine whether Meis activity is also required for P-D limb specification in mammals, we generated transgenic mice ectopically expressing Meis1 in the distal limb mesenchyme under the control of the Msx2 promoter. Msx2:Meis1 transgenic mice display altered P-D patterning and shifted P-D Hox gene expression domains, similar to those previously described for the chicken. Meis proteins function in cooperation with PBX factors, another TALE homeodomain subfamily. Meis-Pbx interaction is required for nuclear localization of both proteins in cell culture, and is important for their DNA-binding and transactivation efficiency. During limb development, Pbx1 nuclear expression correlates with the Meis expression domain, and Pbx1 has been proposed as the main Meis partner in this context; however, we found that Pbx1 deficiency did not modify the limb phenotype of Msx2:Meis1 mice. Our results indicate a conserved role of Meis activity in P-D specification of the tetrapod limb and suggest that Pbx function in this context is either not required or is provided by partners other than Pbx1.

Fission track analysis was applied to the Precambrian suites of Madagascar in order to identify the lower-temperature cooling histories and their relationships to the Phanerozoic events that affected the island. Apatite ages range from 431 to 68 Ma, and zircon ages range from 452 to 238 Ma. Thermochronologically, the island can be divided into a southern, central, and northern region each with a subdivision on an east-west basis. The southern region is sharply separated from the central region by strongly contrasting apparent apatite ages over the northwest-southeast striking Ranotsara Shear Zone (RSZ). The change in apparent ages over the RSZ is indicative of later reactivation along younger brittle faults. The central region has the oldest ages of the island and has a diffuse contact to the third region northward. Along the entire western margin of the Precambrian basement initial Paleozoic exhumation was followed by heating (burial by sediments) during Jurassic and Cretaceous times. A decrease in ages along the eastern margin from 119 to 68 Ma coincides with the predicted positions of the Marion hot spot after effects of erosion are considered. On the other hand, these ages may represent progressive opening of the margin in a southward direction together with associated denudation of the rift shoulder. The eastern part of the central region has remained very stable since at least Devonian times, undergoing only long-term very slow exhumation at rates of 1–5 m/Myr.

Phylo-zonations (or lineage-zonations) are based upon morphological changes within individual evolutionary lineages. These zonations, although potentially of use for stratigraphic subdivision and correlation, often suffer from a lack of quantitative exactness in the definitions of chronospecies. Thus exact reproducibility is hindered for stratigraphic determinations. The potential of morphometrically defined phylo-zonations is demonstrated on a temperate South Pacific Late Cenozoic lineage of planktonic foraminifera (Globorotalia conoidea through intermediate forms to Globorotalia inflata in DSDP Site 284) exhibiting phyletic gradualism. Our sampling interval is about 0.1 m.y. during the last 8 m.y. Changes in the number of chambers in the final whorl, test conicalness, percentage of keeled forms, and test roundness or inflatedness, are used to quantitatively define the following five chronospecies: G. conoidea (Late Miocene; 6.1->8.3 m.y.), G. conomiozea (latest Miocene ; 5.3-6.1 m.y.), G. puncticulata sphericomiozea (earliest Pliocene; 4.5-5.3 m.y.), G. puncticulata puncticulata (Early-Middle Pliocene; 2.9-4.5 m.y.), and G. inflata (Late Pliocene-Quaternary; 0-2.9 m.y.). This phylo-zonation is directly applicable to temperate cool subtropical Southern Hemisphere areas where the evolution took place (Kennett, 1967, 1973; Scott, 1979). It is still not known if the lineage occurs elsewhere; thus the applicability of the phylo-zonation over broader areas is still uncertain. Trends in general size and aperture shape seem to be climatically controlled, and thus may be only of local stratigraphic utility. The practical applications of morphometric phylo-zonation for stratigraphy is to a large extent dependent upon the amount of time and effort required to statistically define the trends. Experiments with large numbers of subsamples from this lineage demonstrate that accurate stratigraphic determinations are possible from measurements on only 15 specimens per sample, except for those very close to chronospecies boundaries.

Within the monitoring programme of the Helsinki Commission (HELCOM) the mesozooplankton of the Bornholm Basin (ICES subdivision 25, station BMP-K2) was sampled by the WP-2 net (lOOfJm) 5-8 times a year in 1988-1992. Abundance, biomass, secondary production and productivity (P/B) were given for mesozooplankton groups and copepod species. Environmental factors recorded were temperature, chlorophyll a and primary production. Within copepods, the dominant species were Temora longicornis and Pseudocalanus minutus with yearly peak values of 40-50% of the monthly copepod numbers and biomasses. The annual production of Temora longicornis was highest (6.5g C/m**2/y). The biomass of all copepods was at its maximum in June (mean = 2.25g C/m**2), especially in 1992 (3.65g C/m**2). The differences between results from two methods used to calculate the production of copepods were greatest in June and July. The cladocerans were only important in summer and the appendicularians only in spring. The productivity (P/B) of the appendicularians was highest of all mesozooplankton groups. Numbers and the biomass of the meroplankton were one or two orders of magnitude below the holoplanktic groups.

A relatively complete lower Paleocene to lower Oligocene sequence was recovered from the Southern High of Shatsky Rise at Sites 1209, 1210, and 1211. The sequence consists of nannofossil ooze and clay-rich nannofossil ooze. Samples from these sites have been the target of intensive calcareous nannofossil biostratigraphic investigations. Calcareous nannofossils are moderately preserved in most of the recovered sequence, which extends from nannofossil Zones CP1 to CP16. Most traditional zonal markers are present; however, the rarity and poor preservation of key species in the uppermost Paleocene and lower Eocene inhibits zonal subdivision of part of this sequence.

Aim: Models project that climate warming will cause the tree line to move to higher elevations in alpine areas and more northerly latitudes in Arctic environments. We aimed to document changes or stability of the tree line in a sub-Arctic model area at different temporal and spatial scales, and particularly to clarify the ambiguity that currently exists about tree line dynamics and their causes. Location: The study was conducted in the Tornetrask area in northern Sweden where climate warmed by 2.5 °C between 1913 and 2006. Mountain birch (Betula pubescens ssp. czerepanovii) sets the alpine tree line. Methods: We used repeat photography, dendrochronological analysis, field observations along elevational transects and historical documents to study tree line dynamics. Results: Since 1912, only four out of eight tree line sites had advanced: on average the tree line had shifted 24 m upslope (+0.2 m/year assuming linear shifts). Maximum tree line advance was +145 m (+1.5 m/year in elevation and +2.7 m/year in actual distance), whereas maximum retreat was 120 m downslope. Counter-intuitively, tree line advance was most pronounced during the cooler late 1960s and 1970s. Tree establishment and tree line advance were significantly correlated with periods of low reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) population numbers. A decreased anthropozoogenic impact since the early 20th century was found to be the main factor shaping the current tree line ecotone and its dynamics. In addition, episodic disturbances by moth outbreaks and geomorphological processes resulted in descent and long-term stability of the tree line position, respectively. Main conclusions: In contrast to what is generally stated in the literature, this study shows that in a period of climate warming, disturbance may not only determine when tree line advance will occur but if tree line advance will occur at all. In the case of non-climatic climax tree lines, such as those in our study area, both climate-driven model projections of future tree line positions and the use of the tree line position for bioclimatic monitoring should be used with caution.

During Leg 138, we measured reflectance spectra in the visible and near-infrared bands (455-945 nm) every few centimeters on split core surfaces from eastern tropical Pacific Ocean sediments. Here, we evaluate predictions of the content of biogenic calcite, biogenic opal, and nonbiogenic sediments from the reflectance spectra. For Sites 844 through 847, which contain a significant nonbiogenic component, reflectance spectra yielded a useful proxy for the percentages of CaCO3 over a wide range of values from nearly 0% to 100%, with root-mean-square (RMS) errors of about 9%. Direct estimates of "nonbiogenic" sediment percentages, approximated by 100 - (CaCO3 + opal), were reasonably successful (RMS error of 10%), however, were incorrect in some intervals. This suggests that mineralogy of the nonbiogenic material changes through time and that further subdivision of this component will be needed for useful estimation from reflectance. For percentages of biogenic opal, calibration equations appear to work well (RMS error of 6%) at concentrations of less than 30%, but for higher opal concentrations, reflectance equations often underestimate the true contents of opal. Improvements in multiparameter lithologic estimates from reflectance spectra may come from (1) expanding the wavelengths measured to better capture unique mineral reflectance bands, and (2) adding the ability to measure diffuse, rather than directional, reflectance to minimize the effects of surface roughness.

A facies-genetic and stratigraphic subdivision of the Quaternary sequence in the Shapkina River valley has been accomplished. The riverbank shows outcrops of three glacial complexes with different mineralogical-petrographic compositions and structural characteristics, which can be correlated and stratificated. Datings of intermoraine horizons (alluvial, marine, lacustrine, and lacustrine-boggy sediments) have been based on palynological and paleomicrotheriological data. The Middle Neopleistocene section can be divided into two till horizons corresponding to two autonomous glaciations (Pechora and Vychegda). They are separated by a member of subaqueous Rodionov sediments. The Pechora till formed in the course of glacier motions from the northeast. Glacial horizons are mainly composed of the Vychegda till transported from the Northwest terrigenous provenance. Lithology of the Upper Neopleistocene Polyarnyi till testifies to its formation in the upper course of the river from material transported from the Northeast terrigenous-mineralogical provenance in the upper course of the river and from the Fennoscandian glaciation center in the lower course of the river. The paper presents the first lithological investigation and substantiation of genesis of various facies of Neopleistocene intermoraine marine sediments (sediments of the beach and fore-beach zones and shallow-water shelf).
