Endodontic sealer residues on dentinal surface have negative effects on adhesion of adhesives system and/or can cause discoloration of the dental crown. Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of 95% ethanol in removal of residues of epoxy-based (AH Plus), methacrylate-based (Epiphany SE) or calcium-based (Sealapex) sealers on dentinal surface. Material and methods: Thirty-two bovine incisor dental crown fragments (0.5 mm x 0.5 mm) were treated with 17% EDTA and 2.5% NaOCl. The specimens were divided into three experimental groups (n = 10): G1 (AH Plus), G2 (Epiphany SE) and G3 (Sealapex). In each group was applied a coating of one endodontic sealer type and were left undisturbed for 5 minutes. After this period, the specimens were cleaned with 95% ethanol. The control group was composed by two specimens that did not receive any sealer or cleaning treatment. The sealer residues persistence after cleaning with 95% ethanol was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (x500) and a score system was applied. Data obtained were analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn tests (α = 5%). Results: Moderate amount of endodontic sealer residues were observed in all groups, regardless of the endodontic sealer compositions. G1, G2 and G3 presented similar amount of sealer residues on dentinal surface after cleaning with 95% ethanol (p > 0.05). Conclusion: 95% ethanol was inefficiency to remove completely AH Plus, Epiphany SE and Sealapex residues of sealer-contaminated dentin.

To evaluate the effect of oxalic acid in cervical hypersensitivity, used under two different resin restorations one based on methacrylate and another based on silorane. Methods: 19 patients with “LCNC with hypersensitivity” were distributed into 4 groups according to treatment: G1 (n = 31): 0.5% oxalic acid (Desenssiv, SSWhite) + Z250 (3MESPE), G2 (n = 31): 0.5% oxalic acid + Filtek Silorane - P90 (3MESPE), G3 (n = 30): Distilled water + Z250; G4 (n = 30): Distilled water + Filtek Silorane - P90. Two clinical calibrated (kappa> 0.75) evaluated the sensitivity of the teeth: Before treatment, at 30, 60 and 90 days post-treatment (VAS). Results: The 4 groups at 30, 60 and 90 days reduced HS compared with the baseline (p <0.05). G1 and G2 showed less HS than G3 and G4 (p <0.05). Conclusion: The 4 restorative procedures significantly reduce the hypersensitivity, 30, 60 and 90 days compared to the baseline.

The characteristics of tissue conditioners support microorganism development that can threaten the health of the dentures user. The object of this study was to evaluate the effect on antimicrobial activity, roughness and wettability surface of a tissue conditioners material combined with the antimicrobial polymer poly (2-tert-butilaminoethyl) methacrylate (PTBAEMA). Specimens of tissue conditioner (Coe Soft(®)) were divided into three groups, according to the concentration of PTBAEMA incorporated (0, 10 and 25%). Antimicrobial activity was assessed by adherence assay of one of the microorganisms, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus mutans and Candida albicans. Roughness measurements were made using a Mitutoyo SJ-400, and the mean arithmetic roughness values (Ra) obtained were used for the comparisons. The wettability properties were determined by contact angle measurements. The group containing 25% of PTBAEMA inhibited totally the S. aureus and S. mutans biofilm formation. A significant reduc tion in the S. aureus (Kruskal-Wallis, p = 0,001) and S. mutans (Kruscal-Wallis, p = 0,001) count for 10% PTBAEMA group compared with respective control group. No significant difference was found for C. albicans among PTBAEMA groups and control group (ANOVA, p > 0,05). Incorporating 10 and 25% PTBAEMA increased surface roughness and decreased contact angles (ANOVA and Tukey's post hoc tests, α = 5%). Incorporating 10% PTBAEMA into tissue conditioner increases wettability and roughness of tissue conditioner surface; and decreases the adhesion of S. mutans and S. aureus on material surface, but did not exhibit antimicrobial effect against C. albicans. The PTBAEMA incorporated into tissue conditioner could prevent biofilm formation on elderly patient.

Using the sol-gel process, organic-inorganic hybrid coatings were synthesized by incorporation of different concentrations of functionalized carbon nanotubes, to improve their mechanical strength and thermal resistance without changing its passivation character. The siloxane-PMMA hybrids were prepared by radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) with 3-methacryloxipropiltrimethoxisilane (MPTS) using the thermal initiator benzoyl peroxide (BPO), followed by acid catalyzed hydrolysis and condensation of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS). The analysis of pristine and functionalized carbon nanotubes was carried out using Scanning Electron Microscopy, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy and Raman Spectroscopy. Structural analysis of hybrids was performed by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, Atomic Force Microscopy and Raman Spectroscopy. For analysis of mechanical strength and thermal stability were performed mechanical compression tests and thermogravimetric analysis, respectively. Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy was used to evaluate the corrosion resistance in saline environment. The results showed an effective functionalization of carbon nanotubes with carboxyl groups and conservation of its structure. The hybrids showed high siloxane network connectivity and roughness of approximately 0.3 nm. The incorporation of carbon nanotubes in the hybrid matrix did not change significantly their thermal stability. Samples containing carbon nanotubes exhibit good corrosion resistance (on the order of MΩ in saline environment), but the lack of complete dispersion of carbon nanotubes in the hybrid, resulted in a loss of mechanical and corrosion resistance compared to hybrid matrix.

Objectives: This study aimed to assess dimensional changes in acrylic resin base and artificial teeth position after water storage and thermocycling using computer graphics measurements. Methods: Twenty-four waxed replicas were obtained from a previous upper complete denture. For linear measurements, points in cusps tips of left central incisor and second premolars and molars were marked in one of the prostheses with graphite and transferred to the others using an acrylic resin guide. The prostheses were scanned after waxing, polymerization and treatments and the images were exported to “AutoCad 2002 Today®” software for measurements. Results: There was no statistically significant difference in changes of each segment for each group and between the phases evaluated after polymerization and thermocycling. In groups I and III, the values after polymerization are higher than those after treatment, which suggests shrinkage while the prostheses in group II have expanded. Conclusion: The three groups exhibited artificial teeth movement after tests in comparison to the polymerized prosthesis. The prostheses submitted to water storage in kiln at 36ºC during seven days showed different behavior than the other groups.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of different disinfection solutions on flexural resistance of chemically-activated acrylic resin. Test pieces were made of clear acrylic resin using a rectangular mold and employing two techniques: wet polymerization under pressure (n = 20) and dry polymerization under pressure (n = 20). Test pieces were subdivided into four equal groups: distilled water (control), sodium bicarbonate, 1% sodium hypochlorite and effervescent ats. The 30-day cycling technique consisted of immersing the test pieces in 100 ml of solution for 10 min three times a day and placing them in closed containers containing artificial saliva at 37°C. Subsequently, the flexural resistance of samples was tested. Data were analyzed using two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with forces serving as the dependent variables and the polymerization technique and cleaning agents as independent variables. Post hoc multiple comparisons were performed using Tukey’s test. There was no statistically significant difference in the flexural strength between the two polymerization techniques. The greatest flexural strength was observed for the effervescent tablets group followed by the control and 1% sodium hypochlorite groups which were statistically similar. Thus, the sodium bicarbonate solution caused the lowest flexural resistance of the test pieces.
