Monopoly power and trade protection: cross- industry evidence

This paper investigates the impact of industry concentration on trade policy. Annual panel-databases of Brazilian industries for the years 1988 through 1994 were used. The regressions reported here are robust to openness indicator. concentration index, control variables and sample size, and suggest that the higher the concentration of a given industry the higher its leveI of trade protection. In the period of study the country experienced a major trade liberalization, but the results in the paper show that the reduction in protection was smaller in more concentrated sectors. Assuming that concentration is ;1 gCl()d proX\' for mOllopoh' po\\'er as it reduces the free-rider problem in coordinating a lobby the results in this paper indicates that interest groups with control over specific markets in fact are able to obtain policy advantages that reduce (international) competition.

EXTRALIMITAL RECORDS OF THE MEXICAN FREE-TAILED BAT (TADARIDA BRASILIENSIS MEXICANA) IN THE CENTRAL UNITED STATES AND THEIR BIOLOGICAL SIGNIFICANCE

Two new records of Tadarida brasiliensis mexicana are reported from Nebraska. The literature records of this taxon from the central United States are summarized. In this region of North America, these bats occupy a “natal range” where the species carries on regular reproductive activities and the populations are relatively stable, including California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Oklahoma. To the north of the natal range of T. b. mexicana is a “pioneering zone” where, under favorable conditions, the species is capable of reproducing and conducting its normal activities. The pioneering zone of the Mexican free-tailed bat includes Barber and Comanche counties in Kansas and as far north as Mesa and Saguache counties in southwestern Colorado. Finally, to the north of the pioneering zone, there is a much larger area that is proposed as the “exploring zone” in which only a few individuals of the species are found. Reproductive activities do not occur on any regular basis in the exploring zone, which encompasses the remainder of Colorado and Kansas as well as the states of Wyoming, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, and southeastern South Dakota.

Le Zone Franche Urbane: Mercato europeo e Ordinamenti tributari

Lo studio delle Zone Franche Urbane all’interno del Diritto tributario europeo non ha potuto prescindere da una introduttiva delimitazione del lavoro, capace di distinguere le diverse tipologie di zone franche esistenti nei Paesi intra/extra Ue. Attraversando i casi-studio di Madeira, delle Azzorre, fino alla istituenda Zona Franca di Bruxelles, Zone d’Economie Urbaine stimulée (ZEUS), si è giunti alla constatazione dell’assenza di una definizione di Zona Franca Urbana: analizzando le esperienze normative vissute in Francia e in Italia, si è potuto tratteggiare il profilo territoriale, soggettivo e oggettivo del sistema agevolativo rivolto al recupero delle aree urbane degradate. La funzione strumentale della fiscalità, esplicitata per mezzo delle ZFU, ha condotto ad una verifica di diritto interno per controllare la legittimità delle scelte nazionali in ragione dei principi costituzionali nazionali, come anche una di diritto europeo per evitare che le scelte nazionali, anche se legittime sul piano interno, possano per gli stessi effetti incentivanti alle attività d'impresa presentarsi come una forma territoriale di aiuti di Stato fiscali. Evidenziando il rapporto tra le ZFU e il Mercato europeo si è voluto, da un lato, effettuare una ricostruzione sistemica necessaria per un’interpretazione delle ZFU che metta in luce le componenti di tale strumento orientate al perseguimento di un interesse socioeconomico, che in prima battuta generi una contraddizione, una deroga ai principi costituzionali e comunitari, per poi “sciogliersi” in una coerente applicazione degli stessi; dall’altro, tentare di elevare le ZFU a misura sistemica dell’Ordinamento europeo. Si è svolto, infine, un ragionamento in termini di federalismo fiscale con riferimento alle ZFU, trovando una adeguata collocazione nel percorso di devoluzione intrapreso dal legislatore nazionale, avendo quali interlocutori privilegiati le Regioni a Statuto Speciale.

Capillary zone electrophoresis determination of carbohydrate-deficient transferrin using the new CEofix reagents under high-resolution conditions

Capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) with a dynamic double coating based on the new CEofix reagents is shown to provide high-resolution separations of serum transferrin (Tf) isoforms, a prerequisite for the monitoring of unusual and complex Tf patterns, including those seen with genetic variants and disorders of glycosylation. A 50 microm I.D. fused-silica capillary of 60 cm total length, an applied voltage of 20 kV and a capillary temperature of 30 degrees C results in 15 min CZE runs of high assay precision and thus provides a robust approach for the determination of carbohydrate-deficient transferrin (CDT, sum of asialo-Tf and disialo-Tf in relation to total Tf) in human serum. Except for selected samples of patients with severe liver diseases and sera with high levels of paraproteins, interference-free Tf patterns are detected. Compared with the use of the previous CEofix reagents for CDT under the same instrumental conditions, the resolution between disialo-Tf and trisialo-Tf is significantly higher (1.7 versus 1.4). The CDT levels of reference and patient sera are comparable, suggesting that the new assay can be applied for screening and confirmation analyses. The high-resolution CZE assay represents an attractive alternative to HPLC and can be regarded as a candidate of a reference method for CDT.

Early implant placement following single-tooth extraction in the esthetic zone: biologic rationale and surgical procedures

Early implant placement is one treatment option for implant therapy following single-tooth extraction in the anterior maxilla. The surgical technique presented here is characterized by tooth extraction without flap elevation, a 4- to 8-week soft tissue healing period, implant placement in a correct three-dimensional position, simultaneous contour augmentation on the facial aspect with guided bone regeneration using a bioabsorbable collagen membrane combined with autogenous bone chips and a low-substitution bone filler, and tension-free primary wound closure. The surgical step-by-step procedure is presented with a case report. In addition, the biologic rationale is discussed.
