A simple, cheap and versatile, polyol-mediated fabrication method has been extended to the synthesis of tin oxide nanoparticles on a large scale. Ultrafine SnO2 nanoparticles with crystallite sizes of less than 5 nm were realized by refluxing SnCl2 . 2H(2)O in ethylene glycol at 195 degrees C for 4 h under vigorous stirring in air. The as-prepared SnO2 nanoparticles exhibited enhanced Li-ion storage capability and cyclability, demonstrating a specific capacity of 400 mAh g(-1) beyond 100 cycles. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. The Coulomb gauge has at least two advantages over other gauge choices in that bound states between quarks and studies of confinement are easier to understand in this gauge. However, perturbative calculations, namely Feynman loop integrations, are not well defined (there are the so-called energy integrals) even within the context of dimensional regularization. Leibbrandt and Williams proposed a possible cure to such a problem by splitting the space-time dimension into D = ω + ρ, i.e., introducing a specific parameter ρ to regulate the energy integrals. The aim of our work is to apply the negative dimensional integration method (NDIM) to the Coulomb gauge integrals using the recipe of split-dimension parameters and present complete results - finite and divergent parts - to the one- and two-loop level for arbitrary exponents of the propagators and dimension.

The growth of the mouse parotid glands during 7 and 35 days of postnatal life was studied by morphometric methods. The mass of the gland, the volume of each morphological compartment, and the cell number in each compartment were evaluated. The data obtained for each evaluated dimension were adjusted by an exponential equation, of the type Y = a.e KX, thus permitting the calculation of their mean duplication time (T D), i.e., an estimation of their growth rate. Analysis of the results showed a marked 1,424% increase in the gland mass during the whole studied period, with T D = 7.10 days. This growth occurred by increases in absolute volume of acini, intercalated ducts, striated ducts, excretory ducts and stroma, with percentual increases of 3,048%, 417%, 2,662%, 2,594% and 367%, respectively, and T Ds of 5.62, 11.71, 5.55, 5.47 and 14.45 days, respectively. Analysis of the cell number growth in each compartment showed increases of 1,904%, 285%, 1,228%, 1,090% and 286%, respectively, and T Ds of 6.62, 20.40, 7.19, 7.26 and 14.51 days, respectively. Based on the present results, we concluded that the growth of the mouse parotid glands from day 7 to day 35 of age occurred by intense cell accumulation, mainly in the acini, striated ducts and excretory ducts, with a growth rate sensibly higher than that of the intercalated ducts and stroma.

Alzheimer's dementia (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that causes motor and cognitive decline. The aim of this study was to analyze the influence of a specific physical activity program on the cognitive, depressive symptoms and functional capacity of patients with diagnosis of probable AD. The subject, a 79-year old woman, participated in this program for three months, with 50 min sessions three times a week. The instruments used were the Cambridge Cognitive Examination; the Geriatric Depression Scale; and the Battery of the American Alliance for Health Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. The results in relationship with the depressive symptoms and functional capacity were significantly positive. There were no changes in regards to the patient's cognitive functions. In conclusion, this physical activity program seems to be an important part of the treatment for patients with AD, as it improves the functional capacity and also stimulates cognitive tasks. © 2008 Asociacin Española de Fisioterapeutas.

Considering the operation of shunt active compensators, such as active power filters, this paper proposes possible compensation strategies by means of the recent formulation of the Conservative Power Theory (CPT). The CPT current's decomposition results in several current components, which are associated with specific load characteristics (power transfer, energy storage, unbalances and/or non linearities). These current components are used for the definition of different compensation strategies, which can be selective in terms of minimizing particular disturbing effects. In order to validate the applicability of these new compensation strategies, simulation and experimental results for three-phase four-wire systems are presented. © 2011 IEEE.
