Advanced High Strength Steels (AHSS) offer outstanding characteristics for efficient and economic use of steel. The unique features of AHSS are direct result of careful heat treatment that creates martensite in the steel microstructure. Martensite and carbon content in the microstructure greatly affects the mechanical properties of AHSS, underlining more importance on microstructural discontinuities and their multiphase characteristics. In this paper, we present the Multiscale Particle-In-Cell (MPIC) method for microstructural modelling of AHSS. A specific particle method [1] usually used in fluid mechanics is adapted and implemented in a parallel multiscale framework. This multiscale method is based on homogenisation theories; with Particle-In-Cell (PIC) method in both micro and macroscale, and offers several advantages in comparison to finite element (FE) based formulation. Application of this method to a benchmark uniaxial tension test is presented and compared with conventional FE solutions.

An aqueous extract of the edible microalga, Chlorella pyrenoidosa (CP) (1), has recently been tested for its immunomodulatory effects in a human clinical trial. Here, the CP extract was dialyzed and fractionated using Sephadex G 100 chromatography. The effects of a dialyzed aqueous CP extract, fraction 2, on mast cell mediator release in vitro and ovalbumin-induced allergic airway inflammation in vivo were examined. In vitro, treatment of mouse bone marrow-derived mast cells with 2 for 18 h significantly inhibited antigen (trinitrophenyl-BSA)-induced IL-5 production. In vivo, treatment of mice with 2 during ovalbumin sensitization and stimulation process significantly reduced eosinophil and neutrophil infiltration in the airways. Moreover, fractions obtained by size exclusion chromatography of 2 inhibited IgE-dependent cytokine GM-CSF production from human cord blood-derived mast cells. Taken together, these results suggest that 2 is composed of biopolymers with anti-allergic potential.

Ultrafine grained materials produced by severe plastic deformation methods possess attractive mechanical properties such as high strength compared with traditional coarse grained counterparts and reasonable ductility. Between existing severe plastic deformation methods the Equal Channel Angular Pressing is the most promising for future industrial applications and can produce a variety of ultrafine grained microstructures in materials depending on route, temperature and number of passes during processing. Driven by a rising trend of miniaturisation of parts these materials are promising candidates for microforming processes. Considering that bi-axial deformation of sheet (foil) is the major operation in microforming, the investigation of the influence of the number of ECAP passes on the bi-axial ductility in micro deep drawing test has been examined by experiments and FE simulation in this study. The experiments have showed that high force was required for drawing of the samples processed by ECAP compare to coarse grained materials. The limit drawing ratio of ultrafine grained samples was in the range of 1.9–2.0 with ECAP pass number changing from 1 to 16, while a higher value of 2.2 was obtained for coarse grained copper. However, the notable decrease in tensile ductility with increase in strength was not as pronounced for bi-axial ductility. The FE simulation using standard isotropic hardening model and von Mises yielding criterion confirmed these findings.

Background - Alterations in folate status are associated with colorectal carcinogenesis. Folate’s role has been postulated to be either via prevention of changes in DNA methylation or uracil misincorporation.
Objective - To investigate the effect of folic acid supplementation on colonocyte folate status and DNA biomarkers.
Design - Twenty individuals harbouring colonic adenomas were randomised to receive folic acid (600 g daily) or placebo for 6 months post polypectomy. Systemic and colonocyte folate status was determined at baseline and following the intervention. Modified Comet assays were used to determine uracil misincorporation and global DNA hypomethylation at the site adjacent to the polyp and a site distal to the polyp.
Outcomes - Supplementation resulted in increased colonocyte folate, which approached significance, at the site adjacent to the polyp (P= 0.06) but not distal to the polyp (P= 0.36); correspondingly there was a reduction in uracil misincorporation at the site adjacent to the polyp (P = 0.02) and the distal site showed no such trend (P= 0.39). There were no significant changes in global DNA hypomethylation at either site post-intervention.
Conclusions - Folic acid supplementation resulted in increased colonocyte folate and decreased uracil misincorporation at the site of the adenoma but not distal to the adenoma. This supports the hypothesis that localised areas of folate deficiency may exist in human colonic mucosa which respond to folic acid supplementation through increasing colonocyte folate and improving folate-related DNA biomarkers of cancer risk.

Background: In the UK, DAFNE training in flexible intensive insulin therapy significantly reduced the negative impact of diabetes on quality of life (QoL) and improved blood glucose (BG) control without significantly increasing severe hypoglycaemia or body mass index (BMI). Analyses were conducted to predict who would benefit most from the generally highly successful DAFNE training and who might experience undesirable effects (e.g. weight gain).

Methods: Multiple regression was used to predict change in outcomes (6-months post-DAFNE) using baseline data: demographic, biomedical, ADDQoL (measure of the impact of diabetes on QoL), extended DTSQ (Diabetes Treatment Satisfaction Questionnaire), and other psychological measures including diabetes-specific well-being and locus of control.

Findings: Greatest improvement in ADDQoL scores was achieved by those reporting less dietary freedom and less treatment satisfaction at baseline (R2=0.21). BG improvement was predicted by higher baseline BG, lower perceived frequency of hypoglycaemia, greater expectations of DAFNE, and greater BMI (R2=0.30). Increase in BMI was predicted by less dietary freedom, DAFNE training centre, and less ‘satisfaction with insulin’ at baseline (R2=0.23).

Conclusions/Discussion: DAFNE has important benefits to offer. Lifting dietary restrictions had substantial benefits for QoL. BG improvement was predicted by baseline BG but also by expectations (perhaps reflecting greater optimism or determination). Prediction of weight gain was more complex. The influence of training centre will have involved implicit messages conveyed by Educators before and during DAFNE. While DAFNE was successful overall, outcomes are likely to be maximised for individuals if their expectations and personal goals are considered by DAFNE Educators.

The discharge of nutrient rich effluent from aquaculture systems into coastal waters is cause for concern. Direct filtration of aquaculture wastewater, using floating medium and sand with in line flocculation, and biological filtration using activated carbon, has the potential to improve water quality for recycling within aquaculture systems. This study looked at the performance of laboratory scale dual media and activated carbon filters in suspended solids and nutrient removal in the treatment of aquaculture wastewater. The dual media filter, with flocculant FeCl3 of 9mg/L, functioned best at a velocity of 7mJh with low headloss, and good turbidity and phosphorus removal (80% and 53% respectively). The activated carbon filter removed ammonia (84%) and nitrite (71 %) in the process of nitrification with a five-hour hydraulic retention time. This paper reports preliminary results from a longer term sustainable aquaculture project.

Discharging the nutrient rich aquaculture effluents into inland water bodies and oceans is becoming a serious concern due to the adverse effect that brings in the form of eutrophication and subsequent damages to those waters. A laboratory scale biological reactor consisting of a denitrifying compartment followed by a submerged membrane bioreactor (SMBR) compartment was used to treat 40 L d−1 of aquaculture effluent with an average concentration of 74 mg L−1 nitrate (NO3 − ). Sugar was added to the aquaculture effluent in order that to enter into the denitrifying compartment at a carbon: nitrogen ratio (C:N) of 2:1 and 4:1. A hollow fibre membrane with a pore size of 0.4 μm and a filtration area of 0.20 m2 was used in the SMBR and was operated at an average flux of 0.20 m3 m−2 d−1. An intermittent suction period of 12 min followed by a relaxation period of 3 min was maintained in the SMBR throughout the experiment. Different aeration rates of 1, 3, 5 and 10 Lpm were applied to the SMBR to determine the rate of membrane fouling and 5 Lpm aeration rate was found to be optimum with respect to the rate of fouling of membrane at a C:N ratio of 4:1. The average rate of fouling at 1, 3, 5 and 10 Lpm were 1.17, 0.70, 0.48 and 0.52 kPa d−1, respectively. The increase in the rate of fouling when the aeration was increased from 5 to 10 Lpm may be due to the breakage of suspended particles into finer particles which could have increased the fouling of membrane. It was also found that increasing the C:N ratio from 2:1 to 4:1 resulted in more cake being formed on the membrane surface as well as an increase in the reduction of NO3 − from 64% to 78%. Preliminary calculations show that 2.4 to 3.2 g of suspended solids could be accumulated per square meter of membrane surface before physical cleaning of membrane is required (at a transmembrane pressure of 20 kPa).
