The use of gate-to-drain capacitance (C-gd) measurement as a tool to characterize hot-carrier-induced charge centers in submicron n- and p-MOSFET's has been reviewed and demonstrated. By analyzing the change in C-gd measured at room and cryogenic temperature before and after high gate-to-drain transverse field (high field) and maximum substrate current (I-bmax) stress, it is concluded that the degradation was found to be mostly due to trapping of majority carriers and generation of interface states. These interface states were found to be acceptor states at top half of band gap for n-MOSFETs and donor states at bottom half of band gap for p-MOSFETs. In general, hot electrons are more likely to be trapped in gate oxide as compared to hot holes while the presence of hot holes generates more interface states. Also, we have demonstrated a new method for extracting the spatial distribution of oxide trapped charge, Q(ot), through gate-to-substrate capacitance (C-gb) measurement. This method is simple to implement and does not require additional information from simulation or detailed knowledge of the device's structure. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

The scoring of occupational categories has along history. After reviewing the historical background, we develop and discuss the properties of two new Australian scales based on current theorising in stratification research. The first is based on the operation of the labour market and scores occupations to reflect their central role in converting educational credentials into market income. The second is based on patterns of social interaction and scores occupations to reflect the choices that people make in marriage markets. While these two scales are not theoretically or empirically equivalent, they are closely related and provide equally valid, but alternative, ways of measuring the underlying stratification order of modern societies.

Objective: The aims of this study were to examine working memory in the acute-subacute phase of schizophrenia and mania and to examine correlations between working memory and specific symptom domains. Method: Visuospatial working memory and symptom profiles were assessed in three groups (schizophrenia group, n=19; mania, n=12; controls, n=19) on two occasions separated by 4 weeks. Results: Both patient groups had significant deficits on working memory compared to the well controls and the schizophrenia and mania groups were equally impaired. All groups showed equivalent improvement over time. In the patient groups, impaired working memory was significantly correlated with the presence of both negative symptoms and positive thought disorder. Conclusion: Impaired wet-king memory is found in both schizophrenia and mania during the acute-subacute phases. Further research is required in order to clarify the neurocognitive mechanisms linking impaired working memory with both negative symptoms and positive thought disorder.

This paper reviews current research and contemporary theories of subcortical participation in the motor control of speech production and language processing. As a necessary precursor to the discussion of the functional roles of the basal ganglia and thalamus, the neuroanatomy of the basal ganglial-thalamocortical circuitry is described. Contemporary models of hypokinetic and hyperkinetic movement disorders based on recent neuroanatomical descriptions of the multi-segmented circuits that characterise basal ganglion anatomy are described. Reported effects of surgically induced lesions in the globus pallidus and thalamus on speech production are reviewed. In addition, contemporary models proposed to explain the possible contribution of various subcortical structures to language processing are described and discussed in the context of evidence gained from observation of the effects of circumscribed surgically induced lesions in the basal ganglia and thalamus on language function. The potential of studies based on examination of the speech/language outcomes of patients undergoing pallidotomy and thalamotomy to further inform the debate relating to the role of subcortical structures in speech motor control and language processing is highlighted. We show that stochastic electrodynamics and quantum mechanics give quantitatively different predictions for the quantum nondemolition (QND) correlations in travelling wave second harmonic generation. Using phase space methods and stochastic integration, we calculate correlations in both the positive-P and truncated Wigner representations, the latter being equivalent to the semi-classical theory of stochastic electrodynamics. We show that the semiclassical results are different in the regions where the system performs best in relation to the QND criteria, and that they significantly overestimate the performance in these regions. Background: Adrenaline is localized to specific regions of the central nervous system (CNS), but its role therein is unclear because of a lack of suitable pharmacologic agents. Ideally, a chemical is required that crosses the blood-brain barrier, potently inhibits the adrenaline-synthesizing enzyme PNMT, and does not affect other catecholamine processes. Currently available PNMT inhibitors do not meet these criteria. We aim to produce potent, selective, and CNS-active PNMT inhibitors by structure-based design methods. The first step is the structure determination of PNMT. Results: We have solved the crystal structure of human PNMT complexed with a cofactor product and a submicromolar inhibitor at a resolution of 2.4 Angstrom. The structure reveals a highly decorated methyltransferase fold, with an active site protected from solvent by an extensive cover formed from several discrete structural motifs. The structure of PNMT shows that the inhibitor interacts with the enzyme in a different mode from the (modeled) substrate noradrenaline. Specifically, the position and orientation of the amines is not equivalent. Conclusions: An unexpected finding is that the structure of PNMT provides independent evidence of both backward evolution and fold recruitment in the evolution of a complex enzyme from a simple fold. The proposed evolutionary pathway implies that adrenaline, the product of PNMT catalysis, is a relative newcomer in the catecholamine family. The PNMT structure reported here enables the design of potent and selective inhibitors with which to characterize the role of adrenaline in the CNS. Such chemical probes could potentially be useful as novel therapeutics.

A new method to extract MOSFET's threshold voltage VT by measurement of the gate-to-substrate capacitance C-gb of the transistor is presented. Unlike existing extraction methods based on I-V data, the measurement of C-gb does not require de drain current to now between drain and source thus eliminating the effects of source and drain series resistance R-S/D, and at the same time, retains a symmetrical potential profile across the channel. Experimental and simulation results on devices with different sizes are presented to justify the proposed method.

Color Doppler ultrasound is a new method for documenting fluid leakage in the setting of video-urodynamic testing. In order to compare color Doppler ultrasound with traditional fluoroscopic imaging we performed a prospective blinded comparative clinical study. Fifty-two consecutive patients undergoing urodynamic investigations for symptoms of incontinence or prolapse were examined using fluoroscopy and translabial color Doppler ultrasound to document stress leakage. The investigators were blinded to each other's results. Both tests were performed at maximum bladder capacity and with an indwelling 5 Fr microtransducer catheter, in both the supine and the erect positions. Equivalent results for both methods were obtained in 48 out of 52 patients (Cohen's kappa = 0.82). It was therefore concluded that translabial color Doppler ultrasound imaging can reliably demonstrate leakage through the female urethra on Valsalva maneuver or coughing.

This research is part of a project whose scope was to investigate the engineering properties of new non-commercial alloy formulations based on the Cu rich corner of the Cu-Fe-Cr ternary system with the primary aim of exploring the development of a new cost-effective high-strength, high-conductivity copper alloy. The aim of the present work was to increase the electrical conductivity and strength of the Cu-0.7wt%Cr-0.3wt%Fe alloy through selective minor additions (less than or equal to0.15 wt%) of elements expected to promote precipitation of dissolved Fe: Ti, B, P, Ni & Y. Such quaternary alloys with reduced Fe in solid solution would be expected to have properties equivalent to or better than those of the Cu-1%Cr reference alloy (Alloy Z). The investigation showed that none of the trace element additions significantly improved the size of the age hardening response or the peak aged electrical conductivity of Alloy A, although further work is required on the influence of Ti. Additions of P and B were detrimental. Other trace additions had little or no effect apart from causing some slight changes to the precipitation kinetics. The mechanical properties of the Cu-0.7%Cr-0.3%Fe alloy made with less expensive high carbon ferrochrome were found to be inferior to those of the equivalent alloy made with low carbon ferrochrome. The aim of this project was to investigate the properties of copper rich Cu-Fe-Cr alloys for the purpose of developing a new cost effective, high-strength, high-conductivity copper alloy. This paper reports on the influence of cold work. The age hardening response of the Cu-0.7%Cr-2.0%Fe alloy was minimal, but the resistance to softening was superior to that reported for any commercial high-strength, high-conductivity (HSHC) copper alloy with comparable mechanical and electrical properties. For example, an excess of 85% of the original hardness of the 40% cold worked alloy is retained after holding at 700 degreesC for 1 hour, whereas commercial HSHC Cu-Fe-P alloys have been reported to soften significantly after 1 hours exposure at less than 500 degreesC. The Cu-0.7Cr-2.0Fe alloy would therefore be expected to be more suitable for applications with a significant risk of exposure to elevated temperatures. Optical microscope examination of cold worked and aged microstructures confirmed the high resistance to recrystallization for Cu-0.7%Cr-2.0%Fe. The Zener-Smith drag term, predicting the pinning effect of second phase particles on dislocations in cold worked microstructures, was calculated using the precipitate characteristics obtained from TEM, WDS and resistivity measurements. The pinning effect of the precipitate dispersions in the peak-aged condition was determined to be essentially equivalent for the Cu-0.7%Cr-0.3%Fe and Cu-0.7%Cr-2.0%Fe alloys. A lower recrystallisation temperature in the Cu-0.7%Cr-0.3%Fe alloy was therefore attributed to faster coarsening kinetics of the secondary precipitates resulting from a higher Cr concentration in the precipitates at lower iron content. Utilizing an in vitro laminitis explant model, we have investigated how bacterial broth cultures and purified bacterial proteases activate matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and alter structural integrity of cultured equine lamellar hoof explants. Four Gram-positive Streptococcus spp. and three Gram-negative bacteria all induced a dose-dependent activation of MMP-2 and MMP-9 and caused lamellar explants to separate. MMP activation was deemed to have occurred if a specific MMP inhibitor, batimastat, blocked MMP activity and prevented lamellar separation. Thermolysin and streptococcal pyrogenic exotoxin B (SpeB) both separated explants dose-dependently but only thermolysin was inhibitable by batimastat or induced MMP activation equivalent to that seen with bacterial broths. Additionally, thermolysin and broth MMP activation appeared to be cell dependent as MMP activation did not occur in isolation. These results suggest the rapid increase in streptococcal species in the caecum and colon observed in parallel with carbohydrate induced equine laminitis may directly cause laminitis via production of exotoxin(s) capable of activating resident MMPs within the lamellar structure. Once activated, these MMPs can degrade key components of the basement membrane (BM) hemidesmosome complex, ultimately separating the BM from the epidermal basal cells resulting in the characteristic laminitis histopathology of hoof lamellae. While many different causative agents have been evaluated in the past, the results of this study provide a unifying aetiological mechanism for the development of carbohydrate induced equine laminitis. BACKGROUND: Because subcutaneous and splanchnic oxygenation indices are sensitive indicators of evolving hemorrhagic shock and adequacy of resuscitation, we postulated that these indices might have an equivalent role in the monitoring of severely burned patients. This observational study was undertaken to examine changes in tissue oxygenation indices during burn resuscitation. METHODS: Seven patients with major burns (54 +/- 21% total body surface area) were studied during the first 36 hours of fluid resuscitation. Silastic tubing was placed in the subcutaneous tissue just beneath both normal skin and deep partial thickness burn. Fiberoptic sensors inserted into the tubing measured subcutaneous oxygen and carbon dioxide tensions in the burnt skin (PO2scb and PCO2scb) and normal skin (PO2scn and PCO2scn) continuously. Gastric intramucosal pH (pHi) and the mucosal CO2 (PCO2m) gap were calculated using gastric tonometers. Mean arterial pressure, arterial pH, lactate, and pHi measurements were obtained for 36 hours. RESULTS: There were no significant differences in mean arterial pressure, arterial pH, or lactate concentrations throughout the study period, whereas indices of tissue oxygenation showed deterioration: pHi decreased from 7.2 +/- 0.1 to 6.7 +/- 0.3 (p = 0.06), the PCO2m gap increased from 12 +/- 17 to 108 +/- 123 mm Hg (p < 0.01), PO2scn decreased from 112 +/- 18 to 50 +/- 11 mm Hg (p < 0.01), PO2scb decreased from 62 +/- 23 to 29 +/- 16 mm Hg (p < 0.01), PCO2scn increased from 42 +/- 4 to 46 +/- 10 mm Hg (p = 0.2), and PCO2scb increased from 42 +/- 10 to 52 +/- 5 mm Hg (p = 0.05). CONCLUSION: Despite adequate global indices of tissue perfusion after 36 hours of resuscitation, tissue monitoring indicated significant deterioration in the splanchnic circulation and in the normal and burnt skin.

The dentary, a component of the transient marginal dentition found in the mandible of juveniles of the living Australian lungfish Neoceratodus forsteri, is a tooth plate exactly comparable to the tooth plates with radiating ridges that make up the marginal dentitions of Devonian dipnoans like Andreyevichthys, Orlovichthys and Ichnomylax. In N. forsteri, the dentary consists of two ridges, set almost in line with each other, and growing by the addition of cusps, of increasing sizes, to the extremity of each ridge. It is therefore equivalent to two ridges of a more normal tooth plate with radiating ridges. Despite its appearance, as a long row of sharp cusps ankylosed to a slender bone, and its position, embedded in soft tissue above the anterolabial margin of Meckel's cartilage, it is a tooth plate and is not comparable to the marginal dentitions of other vertebrates. Structure and development of the transient marginal dentition of this lungfish is another indication that dipnoans may not be the sister group of tetrapods.

A two-dimensional numerical simulation model of interface states in scanning capacitance microscopy (SCM) measurements of p-n junctions is presented-In the model, amphoteric interface states with two transition energies in the Si band gap are represented as fixed charges to account for their behavior in SCM measurements. The interface states are shown to cause a stretch-out-and a parallel shift of the capacitance-voltage characteristics in the depletion. and neutral regions of p-n junctions, respectively. This explains the discrepancy between - the SCM measurement and simulation near p-n junctions, and thus modeling interface states is crucial for SCM dopant profiling of p-n junctions. Objective To assist with strategic planning for the eradication,of malaria in Henan Province, China, which reached the consolidation phase of malaria control in 1992, when only 318 malaria cases were reported, Methods We conducted a prospective two-year study of the costs for Henan's malaria control programme. We used a cost model that could also be applied to other malaria programmes in-mainland China, and analysed the cost of the three components of Henan's malaria programme. suspected malaria case management,, vector surveillance,,and population blood surveys. Primary cost data were collected from the government, and data on suspected malaria patient's were collected in two malaria counties (population 2 093 100). We enlisted the help of 260 village doctors. in six-townships or former communities (population 247 762), and studied all 12 315 reported cases of suspected malaria in catchment areas in 1994 and 1995. Findings The average-annual government investment in malaria control was estimated to be US$ 111 516 (case-management 59%; active blood surveys 25%;vector surveillance 12%; and contingencies and special projects 4%). The average cost (direct and indirect) for-patients seeking-treatment for suspected malaria was US$ 3.48, equivalent,to 10 days' income for rural residents. Each suspected malaria case cost the government an, average of US$ 0.78. Conclusion Further cuts in government funding will increase future costs, when epidemic malaria returns; investment in malaria control should therefore continue at least at current levels,of US$ 0.03 per person a risk.
