Cellulose acetate polymeric membranes had been prepared by a procedure of two steps, combining the method of phase inversion and the technique of hydrolysis-deposition. The first step was the preparation of the membrane, and together was organomodified with tetraethylortosilicate and 3-aminopropyltrietoxysilane. Parameters that exert influence in the complexation of the metallic ion, as pH, time of complexation, metal concentration, had been studied in laboratory using tests of metal removal. The membranes had presented resistance mechanics and reactivity to cations, being able to be an alternative for the removal, daily pay-concentration or in the study of the lability of metals complexed.

This study aimed the use of coal mining waste as a new adsorbent for H3O+ and removal of Al (III), Fe (III) and Mn (II) from acid mine drainage. Data from kinetic and equilibrium of the adsorption of H3O+ followed the pseudo second-order and Langmuir isotherm models. The maximum adsorption capacity of H3O+ was 316 mmol kg-1. The adsorbent removed 100% of Al (III), 100% of Fe (III) and 89% of Mn (II), suggesting its use as an alternative for the treatment of acid mine drainage.

This work applied a 2² factorial design to the optimization of the extraction of seven elements (calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, zinc, copper and manganese) in brachiaria leaves, determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. The factors sample mass and digestion type were evaluated at two levels: 200/500 mg, and dry/wet, respectively. Principal component analysis allowed simultaneous discrimination of all the significant effects in one biplot. Wet digestion and mass of 200 mg were considered the best conditions. The decrease of 60% in sample mass allowed to save costs and reagents. The method was validated through the estimation of figures of merit.

A simple, fast and inexpensive method was developed to determine essential elements in pellets of rice samples using energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (EDXRF). The accuracy and precision were evaluated using Standard Reference Material (rice flour NIST 1568a), and yielding relative standard deviation below 5%. The paired t-test showed good agreement within 95% confidence values. The detection limits (3σ) of Mn and Zn were 5.1 and 2.2 mg kg-1, respectively. The proposed method proved to be effective when used to determine Mn and Zn in commercial samples of rice without go by stage of decomposition.

A sequential extraction procedure was applied to wheat and soybean seed samples. The total protein content (determined by two distinct methods: Bradford and bicinchoninic acid-BCA) and distribution of Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn in each fraction was determined. The sequential extraction employed four different solutions: water, 0.5 mol L-1 NaCl, ethanol/water (70:30 v v-1) and 0.5 mol L-1 NaOH. For both samples, the highest concentration of metals was observed in those extracts associated with globulin-type proteins using NaCl solution. Regarding protein content, higher levels were obtained using the BCA method.

A simultaneous solid phase extraction procedure for enrichment of Cu(II), Cd(II) and Mn(II) has been developed. The method is based on adsorption of Cu(II), Cd(II) and Mn(II) ions on polyethylene glycol-silica gel pre-conditioned with acetate buffer (pH 5.5). The adsorbed metal ions are eluted with nitric acid (1 mol L -1) and determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. The calibration graph was linear in the range of 2-140 ng mL-1 for Cu(II), 1-40 ng mL-1 for Cd(II) and 4-100 ng mL-1 for Mn(II). The limits of detection were 0.66, 0.33 and 1.20 ng mL-1 for Cu(II), Cd(II) and Mn(II), respectively.

The metal distribution in the surface sediment fractions of the Cachoeira River was evaluated based on the fractionation method using a five-step sequential extraction. The determination of metals was made by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry (F AAS). Zn, Pb and Cu exhibit higher concentrations in the residual fraction of the sediment from sites that receive discharges from urban and industrial zones. High levels of Ni (60 ± 1 to 447 ± 9 µg L-1) were found in the river water, which may be detrimental to the "health" of rural communities that utilize the river water for domestic purposes without treatment.

This paper describes the evaluation of a new method of sample preparation using a cold finger system with continuous water flow for rice analysis by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. The limits of detection for Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn for the proposed method were 0.36, 1.84, 2.12 and 0.16 mg kg-1, respectively. The RSDs were lower than 6.0% for all elements and the CRM analyzed showed values with 95% agreement. The proposed method is simple and safe for the proposed objective and does not require the use of mixtures of acid or special equipment for sample preparation.

The Direct Black 22 dye was electrooxidized at 30 mA cm-2 in a flow cell using a BDD or β-PbO2 anode, varying pH (3, 7, 11), temperature (10, 25, 45 °C), and [NaCl] (0 or 1.5 g L-1). In the presence of NaCl, decolorization rates were similar for all conditions investigated, but much higher than predicted through a theoretical model assuming mass-transport control; similar behavior was observed for COD removal (at pH 7, 25 °C), independently of the anode. With no NaCl, COD removals were also higher than predicted with a theoretical model, which suggests the existence of distinct dye degradation pathways.

A simple procedure is described for the determination of scopolamine by square-wave voltammetry using a cathodically pretreated boron-doped diamond electrode. Cyclic voltammetry studies indicate that the oxidation of scopolamine is irreversible at a peak potential of 1.59 V (vs. Ag/AgCl (3.0 mol L-1 KCl)) in a 0.50 mol L-1 sulfuric acid solution. Under optimized conditions, the analytical curve obtained was linear (r = 0.9996) for the scopolamine concentration range of 1.0 to 110 µmol L-1, with a detection limit of 0.84 µmol L-1. The method was successfully applied to the determination of scopolamine in pharmaceutical formulations with minimum sample preparation.

ZnO is a semiconductor material largely employed in the development of several electronic and optical devices due to its unique electronic, optical, piezo-, ferroelectric and structural properties. This study evaluates the properties of Ba-doped wurtzite-ZnO using quantum mechanical simulations based on the Density Functional Theory (DFT) allied to hybrid functional B3LYP. The Ba-doping caused increase in lattice parameters and slight distortions at the unit cell angle in a wurtzite structure. In addition, the doping process presented decrease in the band-gap (Eg) at low percentages suggesting band-gap engineering. For low doping amounts, the wavelength characteristic was observed in the visible range; whereas, for middle and high doping amounts, the wavelength belongs to the Ultraviolet range. The Ba atoms also influence the ferroelectric property, which is improved linearly with the doping amount, except for doping at 100% or wurtzite-BaO. The ferroelectric results indicate the ZnO:Ba is an strong option to replace perovskite materials in ferroelectric and flash-type memory devices.

A seleção de genótipos com resistência quantitativa à ferrugem da folha da aveia (Avena sativa), baseada nos componentes que a condicionam, necessita do conhecimento da associação destes componentes entre si e deles com a quantidade de doença no campo, representada pela área abaixo da curva de progresso da doença (AACPD). Este trabalho objetivou determinar estas correlações, a partir de resultados de ensaios realizados previamente, em que 31 genótipos de aveia branca tiveram sua reação à ferrugem determinada no campo e seus componentes de resistência quantificados. As correlações encontradas foram geralmente baixas, tanto dos componentes entre si, como deles com a intensidade da doença no campo. As correlações mais altas, e consistentes entre os anos, com a AACPD foram da eficiência de infecção em plântulas, do período de latência e do comprimento de pústulas em plantas adultas. Estes dados sugerem que os componentes citados podem ter uma influência um pouco maior que os demais sobre a expressão da resistência parcial a campo. Entretanto, a baixa correlação entre os componentes medidos, indica que a seleção de genótipos, nesta interação patógeno-hospedeiro, não deve ser realizada com base em apenas um componente de resistência. Os resultados sugerem que a expressão da resistência parcial à ferrugem da folha da aveia não é condicionada apenas por um componente de resistência, mas sim pelo efeito conjunto de todos eles. Além disto, é possível que mecanismos diferenciados estejam atuando em cada genótipo, de forma que os componentes de resistência mais importantes para um não sejam os mesmos para outro.

Muitos compostos modelo contendo porfirinas têm sido preparados num esforço para entender o sistema de fotossíntese e os processos de aproveitamento de energia solar. Sistemas doadores-receptores contendo porfirinas têm sido freqüentemente estudados para testar várias descrições teóricas sobre transferência de elétrons. O estudo de parâmetros fotoquímicos e fotofísicos como a distância para transferência de energia, geometria molecular e a diferença de potencial eletrônico, tem se mostrado importante para a definição da transferência eletrônica em porfirinas. Neste trabalho apresentamos a síntese, purificação e caracterização por espectroscopia UV/Vis, ¹H e 19F RMN, luminescência e tempos de vida de novos modelos moleculares de porfirinas, que permitam investigar esses parâmetros. Utilizou-se o dímero Zn,Mn(TPPF4)2pip e seus monômeros ZnTPPF4pipH e MnF5TPP. A caracterização do ZnMn(TPPF4)2pip, foi dificultada devido a presença de Mn+3, devido ao forte acoplamento dos orbitais dpi do manganês e o sistema pi da porfirina, que aumenta a interação manganês-porfirina mudando o espectro eletrônico UV/Vis e distorcendo os sinais de ¹H e 19F RMN do dímero. A presença de Mn+3 desloca E1/2 do anel porfirínico para valores mais negativos, o que resulta em reduções mais difíceis, impedindo a transferência de energia da Znporfirina para a Mnporfirina.

Este trabalho propõe um método simples, rápido e confiável para determinação direta e simultânea de Al, As, Fe, Mn e Ni em cachaça por espectrometria de absorção atômica em forno de grafite (GFAAS). A superfície superior da plataforma do tubo de grafite foi revestida com filme à base de tungstênio (WxCyOz).O programa de aquecimento otimizado (temperatura, tempo de rampa, tempo de patamar) foi o seguinte: secagem 1 (100ºC, 5 s, 5 s); secagem 2 (120ºC, 5 s, 5 s); pirólise (1300ºC, 10 s, 30 s); atomização (2200ºC, 1 s, 6 s) e limpeza (2550ºC, 1 s, 3s). Os desvios padrões relativos (n=3) foram < 4,4%, < 0,7%, < 11%, < 6,0%, < 1,2% para os elementos Al, As, Fe, Mn e Ni, respectivamente. A exatidão foi avaliada por meio de testes de adição e recuperação dos analitos em 8 amostras de cachaças comerciais, e as recuperações situaram-se nos seguintes intervalos: 80 - 105% (Al), 81 - 92% (As), 82 - 108% (Fe), 83 - 106% (Mn), 83 - 108% (Ni). Os limites de detecção calculados foram 9,7 µg L-1 Al, 2,3 µg L-1 As, 12 µg L-1 Fe, 14 µg L-1 Mn e 0,8 µg L-1 Ni.

The lability of Cd(II), Cr(III), Cu(II), Mn(II) and Pb(II) complexed by humic substances (HSs) was investigated by means of ion exchange on cellulose modified with p-aminobenzoic groups (Cell-PAB), using a batch procedure. The HSs were extracted from water samples using adsorption in a column packed with XAD 8 resin. The metal-HS complexes were prepared by adding solutions containing all the aforementioned metal ions ( Cd(II), Cr(III), Cu(II), Mn(II) and Pb(II) ). The results indicated that the distribution coefficients (Kd) of Cell-PAB decreased with the presence of HSs, and that the lability of metal fractions complexed by HSs decreases in pH values > 4.0, complexation time > 10 h and HS concentration > 500 mg L-1. The metal exchange between HSs and Cell-PAB exhibited the following order of metal ion lability: Cd < Pb < Mn @ Cr < Cu.
