As exploration of our solar system and outerspace move into the future, spacecraft are being developed to venture on increasingly challenging missions with bold objectives. The spacecraft tasked with completing these missions are becoming progressively more complex. This increases the potential for mission failure due to hardware malfunctions and unexpected spacecraft behavior. A solution to this problem lies in the development of an advanced fault management system. Fault management enables spacecraft to respond to failures and take repair actions so that it may continue its mission. The two main approaches developed for spacecraft fault management have been rule-based and model-based systems. Rules map sensor information to system behaviors, thus achieving fast response times, and making the actions of the fault management system explicit. These rules are developed by having a human reason through the interactions between spacecraft components. This process is limited by the number of interactions a human can reason about correctly. In the model-based approach, the human provides component models, and the fault management system reasons automatically about system wide interactions and complex fault combinations. This approach improves correctness, and makes explicit the underlying system models, whereas these are implicit in the rule-based approach. We propose a fault detection engine, Compiled Mode Estimation (CME) that unifies the strengths of the rule-based and model-based approaches. CME uses a compiled model to determine spacecraft behavior more accurately. Reasoning related to fault detection is compiled in an off-line process into a set of concurrent, localized diagnostic rules. These are then combined on-line along with sensor information to reconstruct the diagnosis of the system. These rules enable a human to inspect the diagnostic consequences of CME. Additionally, CME is capable of reasoning through component interactions automatically and still provide fast and correct responses. The implementation of this engine has been tested against the NEAR spacecraft advanced rule-based system, resulting in detection of failures beyond that of the rules. This evolution in fault detection will enable future missions to explore the furthest reaches of the solar system without the burden of human intervention to repair failed components.

There is general consensus that context can be a rich source of information about an object's identity, location and scale. In fact, the structure of many real-world scenes is governed by strong configurational rules akin to those that apply to a single object. Here we introduce a simple probabilistic framework for modeling the relationship between context and object properties based on the correlation between the statistics of low-level features across the entire scene and the objects that it contains. The resulting scheme serves as an effective procedure for object priming, context driven focus of attention and automatic scale-selection on real-world scenes.

The Aitchison vector space structure for the simplex is generalized to a Hilbert space structure A2(P) for distributions and likelihoods on arbitrary spaces. Central notations of statistics, such as Information or Likelihood, can be identified in the algebraical structure of A2(P) and their corresponding notions in compositional data analysis, such as Aitchison distance or centered log ratio transform. In this way very elaborated aspects of mathematical statistics can be understood easily in the light of a simple vector space structure and of compositional data analysis. E.g. combination of statistical information such as Bayesian updating, combination of likelihood and robust M-estimation functions are simple additions/ perturbations in A2(Pprior). Weighting observations corresponds to a weighted addition of the corresponding evidence. Likelihood based statistics for general exponential families turns out to have a particularly easy interpretation in terms of A2(P). Regular exponential families form finite dimensional linear subspaces of A2(P) and they correspond to finite dimensional subspaces formed by their posterior in the dual information space A2(Pprior). The Aitchison norm can identified with mean Fisher information. The closing constant itself is identified with a generalization of the cummulant function and shown to be Kullback Leiblers directed information. Fisher information is the local geometry of the manifold induced by the A2(P) derivative of the Kullback Leibler information and the space A2(P) can therefore be seen as the tangential geometry of statistical inference at the distribution P. The discussion of A2(P) valued random variables, such as estimation functions or likelihoods, give a further interpretation of Fisher information as the expected squared norm of evidence and a scale free understanding of unbiased reasoning

La enseñanza basada en las competencias es más compleja que la aplicación de saberes y la realización de casos prácticos específicos, puesto que es necesario ejecutar también las operaciones mentales abstractas que permitan al estudiante consolidar los conocimientos, y demostrar las habilidades y las actitudes necesarias para ser competente. Para que el alumno universitario aprenda este proceso debe, en primer lugar, ser consciente de esta necesidad y debe saber identificar las operaciones mentales implicadas y saber representarlas o expresarlas de forma manuscrita o esquematizada. Estas operaciones no son, según alumnos y profesores, tareas fáciles, pero si son, sin embargo, elementos que se perciben como muy necesarios para aprender estrategias de razonamiento y pensamiento crítico que repercutirán positivamente en la calidad de los cuidados de enfermería realizados en el paciente y en la comunidad en un futuro más o menos próximo. La asignatura optativa de tercer curso Resolución de casos desde un enfoque enfermero del Departamento de Enfermería Fundamental y Medico-quirúrgica de la Universidad de Barcelona nace con la intención de dar respuesta a la necesidad del estudiante de mejorar sus habilidades profesionales enseñando el marco teórico de estrategias de razonamiento clínicos para resolver casos simulados del entorno sanitario y profesional, de forma más efectiva y completa. La presente comunicación tiene por objetivos principales presentar el marco teórico que sustenta el proyecto docente implementado y exponer las características metodológicas desarrolladas

Behavior-based navigation of autonomous vehicles requires the recognition of the navigable areas and the potential obstacles. In this paper we describe a model-based objects recognition system which is part of an image interpretation system intended to assist the navigation of autonomous vehicles that operate in industrial environments. The recognition system integrates color, shape and texture information together with the location of the vanishing point. The recognition process starts from some prior scene knowledge, that is, a generic model of the expected scene and the potential objects. The recognition system constitutes an approach where different low-level vision techniques extract a multitude of image descriptors which are then analyzed using a rule-based reasoning system to interpret the image content. This system has been implemented using a rule-based cooperative expert system

This paper presents the use of a mobile robot platform as an innovative educational tool in order to promote and integrate different curriculum knowledge. Hence, it is presented the acquired experience within a summer course named ldquoapplied mobile roboticsrdquo. The main aim of the course is to integrate different subjects as electronics, programming, architecture, perception systems, communications, control and trajectory planning by using the educational open mobile robot platform PRIM. The summer course is addressed to a wide range of student profiles. However, it is of special interests to the students of electrical and computer engineering around their final academic year. The summer course consists of the theoretical and laboratory sessions, related to the following topics: design & programming of electronic devices, modelling and control systems, trajectory planning and control, and computer vision systems. Therefore, the clues for achieving a renewed path of progress in robotics are the integration of several knowledgeable fields, such as computing, communications, and control sciences, in order to perform a higher level reasoning and use decision tools with strong theoretical base

L'objectiu d'aquest treball és explicar i fer la crítica de la Teoria de la Veritat recentment defensada per Apel. En primer lloc, el consens i pragmàtica de la Teoria de la Veritat d'Apel es presenta en relació amb el projecte de la Teoria Crítica de la Societat de Habermas i el problema dels fonaments en el raonament ètic. En segon lloc, la seva versió idealitzada i transcendental de la Veritat que invoca la noció de convergència en una comunitat ideal d'investigadors lliures és analitzada. Finalment, les entranyes de l'esperit wingensteinià i després de l'últim anàlisi de Putnam, s’ha intentat fer una avaluació crítica. El resultat de tot això serà una més modesta concepció de la Veritat com a tan sols una qualitat de la praxi lingüística humana, però no la seva primera pedra

In the context of the digital business ecosystems, small organizations cooperate between them in order to achieve common goals or offer new services for expanding their markets. There are different approaches for these cooperation models such as virtual enterprises, virtual organizations or dynamic electronic institutions which in their lifecycle have in common a dissolution phase. However this phase has not been studied deeply in the current literature and it lacks formalization. In this paper a first approach for achieving and managing the dissolution phase is proposed, as well as a CBR process in order to support it in a multi-agent system

The paper focuses on taking advantage of large amounts of data that are systematically stored in plants (by means of SCADA systems), but not exploited enough in order to achieve supervisory goals (fault detection, diagnosis and reconfiguration). The methodology of case base reasoning (CBR) is proposed to perform supervisory tasks in industrial processes by re-using the stored data. The goal is to take advantage of experiences, registered in a suitable structure as cam, avoiding the tedious task of knowledge acquisition and representation needed by other reasoning techniques as expert systems. An outlook of CBR terminology and basic concepts are presented. The adaptation of CBR in performing expert supervisory tasks, taking into account the particularities and difficulties derived from dynamic systems, is discussed. A special interest is focused in proposing a general case definition suitable for supervisory tasks. Finally, this structure and the whole methodology is tested in a application example for monitoring a real drier chamber

This paper introduces how artificial intelligence technologies can be integrated into a known computer aided control system design (CACSD) framework, Matlab/Simulink, using an object oriented approach. The aim is to build a framework to aid supervisory systems analysis, design and implementation. The idea is to take advantage of an existing CACSD framework, Matlab/Simulink, so that engineers can proceed: first to design a control system, and then to design a straightforward supervisory system of the control system in the same framework. Thus, expert systems and qualitative reasoning tools are incorporated into this popular CACSD framework to develop a computer aided supervisory system design (CASSD) framework. This paper shows the impact of the atomic capabilities concept to include control-oriented knowledge of linear control systems in the decisions making structure of physical agents. These agents operate in a real environment managing physical objects (e.g. their physical bodies) in coordinated tasks. This approach is presented using an introspective reasoning approach and control theory based on the specific tasks of passing a ball and executing the offside manoeuvre between physical agents in the robotic soccer testbed. Experimental results and conclusions are presented, emphasising the advantages of our approach that improve the multi-agent performance in cooperative systems

El presente trabajo contiene un análisis profundo sobre el concepto de Competitividad Nacional y la pertinencia de su medición. El principal objetivo del estudio es aclarar la esencia de tan trascendental y utilizado término, así como la lógica imperante en los más reconocidos índices de medición de la competitividad de las naciones a nivel mundial. En el capítulo 1 se presentan los primeros pasos en el proceso de elucidación, metodología que se eligió para examinar a fondo el término; incluye la revisión histórica del concepto y las posiciones de reconocidas personalidades en el campo entorno a la definición del mismo. El segundo capítulo contiene un razonamiento personal sobre la naturaleza del término y lo que significa ser competitivo como país y, continuando con la metodología del capítulo anterior, se extraen las ideas clave y comunes de los autores citados para concluir con una propuesta de definición de Competitividad Nacional. El tercer capítulo es una presentación de los índices de medición del Foro Económico Mundial (Reporte Global de Competitividad) y de la escuela de negocios IMD (Anuario Mundial de Competitividad), para culminar esta sección con un análisis comparativo entre ambos. El cuarto capítulo es un análisis crítico sobre la validez de estos índices. Por último, el lector encontrará las conclusiones y reflexiones finales de la investigación.
