A metáfora fundamental do discurso de John Dewey

This work aims to identify the rootmetaphor of John Dewey’s philosophical and educational discourse, by means of rhetorical analyses parameters. This methodology is founded in Aristotle and in the works of Chaïm Perelman and other contemporary authors involved in the revision of Aristotelian philosophy. The article examines the essays “The philosophical work of Herbert Spencer” and “The influence of darwinism on philosophy”, published by John Dewey respectively in 1904 e 1909. They were written in the early years of Dewey in Columbia University, which intellectual environment was not dominated by Pragmatism, and for this reason they can be considered seminal in the structuring of the author’s arguments. The analysis reveals that Dewey is favorable to Darwinian evolutionism thesis and opposite to Spencer’s one. This positioning suggests that Dewey’s discourse is bound to the metaphor “undetermined route” because it situates evolution as a process devoid of previously listed purposes at a pre-determined plan, subject only to the relations that are established, so unpredictable, between organisms and the environmental conditions that surround. Analyzing Dewey’s ideas about education, the article concludes that “undetermined route” is the rootmetaphor of Dewey’s discourse, hypothesis that can contribute to discuss Dewey in the context of contemporary philosophy.

Reformismo social em John R. Commons

This research aims to discuss aspects of the thought of John R. Commons regarding their engagement with the reform of capitalism. He focuses on his interpretation of the socioeconomic context of American capitalism, which led him to distance himself from the Marxist revolutionary praxis and the authoritarian reformism offered by the variant of European fascism. Based on extensive literature review, the research rebuild through a historical and theoretical context, his thinking and show the evolution of his ideas throughout his life. Recreating the terms in which Commons defended his reformist project, called him reasonable capitalism.

The optimal lysine and threonine intake for Cobb broiler breeder hens using Reading model

This study aimed to determine the optimal intake of lysine and threonine for broiler breeder hens. Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the responses of birds to digestible lysine (Lys) and threonine (Thr). Eight treatments were assessed in both experiments, with six replicates of eight birds in the Lys experiment and ten birds in the Thr experiment. The dietary levels of Lys and Thr were obtained by a dilution technique. The experimental period was ten weeks for each amino acid studied, which included six weeks of adaptation and four weeks of data collection. The amino acid intake, egg mass and body weight were adjusted using a Reading model. Based on the model coefficients, the cost of the synthetic amino acids sources and the price of fertile eggs determined the intake of each amino acid to maximize. The minimum intake of Lys and Thr reduced egg production by 40 and 30%, respectively, the weight of the eggs decreased by 12 and 9% with the same intake of Lys and Thr, respectively. The models generated by predicting Lys and Thr intake were as follows: Lys=11 x E+31 x W and Thr=9.5 x E+32 x W, where E=egg mass, g/bird per day, and W=body weight, kg/bird. Based on the models, 3 kg birds with an egg mass production of 50 g/day require 643 mg/bird per day of Lys and 569 mg/bird per day of Thr. The optimum economic intake was calculated at 954 and 834 mg/bird per day for Lys and Thr, respectively, reflecting a dietary concentration of 0.636% Lys and 0.556% Thr for a feed intake of 150 g/bird per day. A review of the literature on the development of extracorporeal circulation techniques, their essential role in cardiovascular surgery, and the complications associated with their use, including hemolysis and inflammation. The advancement of extracorporeal circulation techniques has played an essential role in minimizing the complications of cardiopulmonary bypass, which can range from various degrees of tissue injury to multiple organ dysfunction syndrome. Investigators have long researched the ways in which cardiopulmonary bypass may insult the human body. Potential solutions arose and laid the groundwork for development of safer postoperative care strategies. Steady progress has been made in cardiopulmonary bypass in the decades since it was first conceived of by Gibbon. Despite the constant evolution of cardiopulmonary bypass techniques and attempts to minimize their complications, it is still essential that clinicians respect the particularities of each patient's physiological function.

The purpose of this research is to present de narrative techniques of the Stream of Consciousness in the novel Ask the dust, by American writer John Fante, as well as analyzing the technique applying it to the character/narrator Arturo Bandini. Among others, the emphasys was given to the interior monologue technique, for its large and intense use throughout the analyzed novel. This research was based specially on O Fluxo da consciência (1976), by Robert Humphrey, and Foco narrativo e fluxo da consciência (2012), de Alfredo Leme Coelho de Carvalho, both important researchers in the studied theme. This research, therefore, intends to demonstrate the geniality of the still little-known John Fante and point out the peculiarities of the so-called 'psychological fiction', that in the early 20th century united literature and psychology studies, becoming very popular in modern literature, with exponents like Virginia Woolf and James Joyce

The Charles Lonergan Cobb Papers consists mainly of correspondence but also includes photographs, biographical material, magazine and newspaper clippings, all relating to Cobb's career as a banker at People's National Bank( 1905-1949); and the People's National Bank and Trust Company(1949-1953) in Rock Hill, SC as well as his association with Winthrop College as a Board of Trustees' member(1938-1953). Subjects include, railroad cotton shipping service to South Carolina mill towns, crop loans in the early 1920s, location of the Celanese Chemical Plant in Rock Hill, the Winthrop College Board of Trustees, and a1946 article about Cobb that appeared in the Saturday Evening Post.
