We obtain constraints on possible anomalous interactions of the top quark with the electroweak vector bosons arising from the precision measurements at the Z pole. In the framework of SU(2)L ⊕ U(1)Y chiral Lagrangians, we examine all effective CP-conserving operators of dimension five which induce fermionic currents involving the top quark. We constrain the magnitudes of these anomalous interactions by evaluating their one-loop contributions to the Z pole physics. Our analysis shows that the operators that contribute to the LEP observables get bounds close to the theoretical expectation for their anomalous couplings. We also show that those which break the SU(2)C custodial symmetry are more strongly bounded. © 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.

In this letter we apply an alternative approach, recently developed, to the description of massless particles of arbitrary spin to the case of spin-two particles. This provides a non-geometrical approach to the theory of linearized gravitation. Within this method the chiral components of a spinor field are treated as independent field variables. The free field Lagrangian is built up from the requirement of chiral invariance. This formulation is parallel to the neutrino theory and leads to a formulation that generalizes, to particles of spin-two, the two-component neutrino theory. At the free field level the analog of curvature tensor, spin connection tensor, and metric tensor are independent quantities. By introducing left-right asymmetric linear interactions of these chiral components we get the linearized gravitation theory.

In the context of the standard model the quantization of the electric charge occurs only family by family. When we consider the three families together with massless neutrinos the electric charge is not quantized any more. Here we show that a chiral bilepton gauge model based on the gauge group SU(3)C ⊗ SU(3)L ⊗ U(1)N explains the quantization of the electric charge when we take into account the three families of fermions. This result does not depend on the neutrino masses. Charge quantization occurs whether the neutrinos are massless or Dirac or Majorana massive fields.

We study the presence of symmetry transformations in the Faddeev-Jackiw approach for constrained systems. Our analysis is based in the case of a particle submitted to a particular potential which depends on an arbitrary function. The method is implemented in a natural way and symmetry generators are identified. These symmetries permit us to obtain the absent elements of the sympletic matrix which complement the set of Dirac brackets of such a theory. The study developed here is applied in two different dual models. First, we discuss the case of a two-dimensional oscillator interacting with an electromagnetic potential described by a Chern-Simons term and second the Schwarz-Sen gauge theory, in order to obtain the complete set of non-null Dirac brackets and the correspondent Maxwell electromagnetic theory limit. ©1999 The American Physical Society.

We point out that if the Majoron-like scheme is implemented within a 3-3-1 model, there must exist at least three different mass scales for the scalar vacuum expectation values in the model. ©1999 The American Physical Society.

Group theoretical-based techniques and fundamental results from number theory are used in order to allow for the construction of exact projectors in finite-dimensional spaces. These operators are shown to make use only of discrete variables, which play the role of discrete generator coordinates, and their application in the number symmetry restoration is carried out in a nuclear BCS wave function which explicitly violates that symmetry. © 1999 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. In a 3-3-1 model in which the lepton masses arise from a scalar sextet it is possible to break spontaneously a global symmetry which implies in a pseudoscalar Majoron-like Goldstone boson. This Majoron does not mix with any other scalar fields and for this reason it does not couple, at the tree level, to either the charged leptons or to the quarks. Moreover, its interaction with neutrinos is diagonal. We also argue that there is a set of parameters in which the model can be consistent with the invisible Z0 width and that heavy neutrinos can decay sufficiently rapid by Majoron emission, having a lifetime shorter than the age of the universe. ©1999 The American Physical Society.

The classification of the regularization ambiguity of a 2D fermionic determinant in three different classes according to the number of second-class constraints, including the new Faddeevian regularization, is examined and extended. We find a new and important result that the Faddeevian class, with three second-class constraints, possesses a free continuous one parameter family of elements. The criterion of unitarity restricts the parameter to the same range found earlier by Jackiw and Rajaraman for the two-constraint class. We studied the restriction imposed by the interference of right-left modes of the chiral Schwinger model (χQED2) using Stone's soldering formalism. The interference effects between right and left movers, producing the massive vectorial photon, are shown to constrain the regularization parameter to belong to the four-constraint class which is the only nonambiguous class with a unique regularization parameter. ©1999 The American Physical Society.

We present a model of fermion masses based on a minimal, non-Abelian discrete symmetry that reproduces the Yukawa matrices usually associated with U(2) theories of flavor. Mass and mixing angle relations that follow from the simple form of the quark and charged lepton Yukawa textures are therefore common to both theories. We show that the differing representation structure of our horizontal symmetry allows for new solutions to the solar and atmospheric neutrino problems that do not involve modification of the original charged fermion Yukawa textures, or the introduction of sterile neutrinos. We analyze the average performance of a general class of learning algorithms for the nondeterministic polynomial time complete problem of rule extraction by a binary perceptron. The examples are generated by a rule implemented by a teacher network of similar architecture. A variational approach is used in trying to identify the potential energy that leads to the largest generalization in the thermodynamic limit. We restrict our search to algorithms that always satisfy the binary constraints. A replica symmetric ansatz leads to a learning algorithm which presents a phase transition in violation of an information theoretical bound. Stability analysis shows that this is due to a failure of the replica symmetric ansatz and the first step of replica symmetry breaking (RSB) is studied. The variational method does not determine a unique potential but it allows construction of a class with a unique minimum within each first order valley. Members of this class improve on the performance of Gibbs algorithm but fail to reach the Bayesian limit in the low generalization phase. They even fail to reach the performance of the best binary, an optimal clipping of the barycenter of version space. We find a trade-off between a good low performance and early onset of perfect generalization. Although the RSB may be locally stable we discuss the possibility that it fails to be the correct saddle point globally. ©2000 The American Physical Society.

It is pointed out that erroneous Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer model equations have been used by Haranath Ghosh in his recent treatment of time-reversal symmetry-breaking superconductivity. Consequently, his numerical results are misleading, and his conclusions are not to the point.

Although the equations of motion for the Neveu-Schwarz (NS) and Ramond (R) sectors of open superstring field theory can be covariantly expressed in terms of one NS and one R string field, picture-changing problems prevent the construction of an action involving these two string fields. However, a consistent action can be constructed by dividing the NS and R states into three string fields which are real, chiral and antichiral. The open superstring field theory action includes a WZW-like term for the real field and holomorphic Chern-Simons-like terms for the chiral and antichiral fields. Different versions of the action can be constructed with either manifest d = 8 Lorentz covariance or manifest TV = 1 d = 4 super-Poincaré covariance. The lack of a manifestly d = 10 Lorentz covariant action is related to the self-dual five-form in the type-IIB R-R sector.

We have studied the theory of gauged chiral bosons and proposed a general theory, a master action, that encompasses different kinds of gauge field couplings in chiral bosonized theories with first-class chiral constraints. We have fused opposite chiral aspects of this master action using the soldering formalism and applied the final action to several well-known models. The Lorentz rotation permitted us to fix conditions on the parameters of this general theory in order to preserve the relativistic invariance. We also have established some conditions on the arbitrary parameter concerned in a chiral Schwinger model with a generalized constraint, investigating both covariance and Lorentz invariance. The results obtained supplement the one that shows the soldering formalism as a new method of mass generation. ©2001 The American Physical Society.

We use singularity theory to classify forced symmetry-breaking bifurcation problems f(z, λ, μ) = f1 (z, λ) + μf2(z, λ, μ) = 0, where f1 is double-struck O sign (2)-equivariant and f2 is double-struck D sign n-equivariant with the orthogonal group actions on z ∈ ℝ2. Forced symmetry breaking occurs when the symmetry of the equation changes when parameters are varied. We explicitly apply our results to the branching of subharmonic solutions in a model periodic perturbation of an autonomous equation and sketch further applications.
