Hydrogenation of tertiary amides, in particular, N-methylpyrrolidin-2-one, can be efficiently facilitated by a TiO(2)-supported bimetallic Pt/Re catalyst at low temperatures and pressures. Characterisation of the catalysts and kinetic tests have shown that the close interaction between the Re and Pt is crucial to the high activity observed. DFT calculations were used to examine a range of metal combinations and show that the role of the uncoordinated Re is to activate the C=O and that of the Pt is as a hydrogenation catalyst, removing intermediates from the catalyst surface. The rate enhancement observed on the TiO(2) support is thought to be due to the presence of oxygen vacancies allowing adsorption and weakening of the C=O bond. (C) 2011 Elsevier Inc. New routes for the preparation of highly active TiO2-supported Cu and CuZn catalysts have been developed for C-O coupling reactions. Slurries of a titania precursor were dip-coated onto glass beads to obtain either structured mesoporous or non-porous titania thin films. The Cu and CuZn nanoparticles, synthesized using a reduction by solvent method, were deposited onto calcined films to obtain a Cu loading of 2 wt%. The catalysts were characterized by inductively coupled plasma (ICP) spectroscopy, temperature-programmed oxidation/reduction (TPO/TPR) techniques, Cu-63 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning and transmission electron microscopy (S/TEM-EDX) and X-ray photo-electron spectroscopy (XPS). The activity and stability of the catalysts obtained have been studied in the C-O Ullmann coupling of 4-chloropyridine and potassium phenolate. The titania-supported nanoparticles retained catalyst activity for up to 12 h. However, catalyst deactivation was observed for longer operation times due to oxidation of the Cu nanoparticles. The oxidation rate could be significantly reduced over the CuZn/TiO2 catalytic films due to the presence of Zn. The 4-phenoxypyridine yield was 64% on the Cu/nonporous TiO2 at 120 degrees C. The highest product yield of 84% was obtained on the Cu/mesoporous TiO2 at 140 degrees C, corresponding to an initial reaction rate of 104 mmol g(cat)(-1) s(-1). The activation energy on the Cu/mesoporous TiO2 catalyst was found to be (144 +/- 5) kJ mol(-1), which is close to the value obtained for the reaction over unsupported CuZn nanoparticles (123 +/- 3 kJ mol(-1)) and almost twice the value observed over the catalysts deposited onto the non-porous TiO2 support (75 +/- 2 kJ mol(-1)).

High activity and stability during oxidation of methanol under the relatively anode environment are two main evaluation criterias for an effective anode electrocatalyst in direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC). Mesoporous WC samples with hollow structure were prepared by gas-solid reaction at the atmosphere of CH(4)/H(2) by using airflow spray dried ammonium metatungstate (AMT). The platinum supported on this material by impregnation-vapor phase deoxidation method served as a less expensive electro anode catalyst. XRD and SEM results showed that Pt particles were well dispersed on the surface of WC. The results showed that the Pt/WC-PME exhibited an attractive catalytic activity, and methanol oxidation process in Pt/WC-PME is affected by liquid-phase mass transfer. The results also indicated that the oxidation can be improved by raising temperatures.

We compared the ability of five strains of the ericoid mycorrhizal fungus Hymenoscyphus ericae to utilise glutamine, ammonium or nitrate at high or low carbon (C) availability. The pattern of intraspecific variation in growth was affected by C availability. When C supply was high, growth differences between strains were explained by the total amount of nitrogen (N) taken up, suggesting variation in uptake kinetics. Under C-limiting conditions, strain differences were linked with their nitrogen use efficiency, implying intraspecific differences in N metabolism. The relationship between growth on glutamine and pH shifts in the media indicated that there was intraspecific variation in glutamine transporters. In addition, the correlation between pH changes and the amount of glutamine-N recovered as ammonium in the media indicated that there were intraspecific variations within the enzymatic pathways involved in glutamine metabolism. Our findings, compared with those of a previous study involving the same ericoid strains, draw attention to the temporal variation in nitrogen source utilisation by ericoid mycorrhizal fungi when maintained in axenic culture.

The selective hydrogenation of ,-unsaturated aldehydes and ketones has been studied using ketoisophorone and cinnamaldehyde as model substrates using manganese oxide octahedral molecular sieve (OMS-2) based catalysts. For the first time, OMS-2 has been shown to be an efficient and selective hydrogenation catalyst. High selectivities for either the CC or CO double bond at approximate to 100% conversion were achieved by using OMS-2 and platinum supported on OMS-2 catalysts. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations showed that the dissociation of H2 on OMS-2 was water assisted and occurred on the surface Mn of OMS-2(001) that had been modified by an adsorbed H2O molecule. The theoretically calculated activation barrier was in good agreement with the experimentally determined value for the hydrogenation reactions, indicating that H2 dissociation on OMS-2 is likely to be the rate-determining step. A significant increase in the rate of reaction was observed in the presence of Pt as a result of the enhancement of H2 dissociative adsorption and subsequent reaction on the Pt or spillover of the hydrogen to the OMS-2 support. The relative adsorption strengths of ketoisophorone and cinnamaldehyde on the OMS-2 support compared with the Pt were found to determine the product selectivity.

Although many gold heterogeneous catalysts have been shown to exhibit significant activity and high selectivity for a wide range of reactions in both the liquid and gas phases, they are prone to irreversible deactivation. This is often associated with sintering or loss of the interaction of the gold with the support. Herein, we report on the use of methyl iodide as a method of dispersing gold nanoparticles supported on silica, titania, and alumina supports. In the case of titania- and alumina-based catalysts, the gold was transformed from nanometer particles into small clusters and some atomically dispersed gold. In contrast, although there was a drop in the gold particle size on the silica support following CH3I treatment, the size remained in the submicrometer range. The structural changes were correlated with changes in the selectivity and activity for ethanol dehydration and benzyl alcohol oxidation. From these observations, it is clear that this treatment provides a method by which deactivated gold catalysts can be reactivated via redispersion of the gold.

The role of sodium surface species in the modification of a platinum (Pt) catalyst film supported on 8 mol% yttria-stabilised-zirconia (YSZ) was investigated under a flow of 20 kPa oxygen at 400 °C. Cyclic and linear sweep voltammetry were used to investigate the kinetics of the oxygen charge transfer reaction. The Pt/YSZ systems of both ‘clean’ and variable-coverage sodium-modified catalyst surfaces were also characterised using SEM, XPS and work function measurements using the Kelvin probe technique.

Samples with sodium coverage from 0.5 to 100% were used. It was found that sodium addition modifies the binding energy of oxygen onto the catalyst surface. Cyclic voltammetry experiments showed that higher overpotentials were required for oxygen reduction with increasing sodium coverage. In addition, sodium was found to modify oxygen storage and/or adsorption and diffusion increasing current densities at higher cathodic overpotential. Ex situ XPS measurements showed the presence of sodium hydroxide, carbonate and/or oxide species on the catalyst surface, while the Kelvin probe technique showed a decrease of approximately 250 meV in the work function of samples with more than 50% sodium coverage (compared to a nominally ‘clean’ sample).

On-stream deactivation during a water gas shift (WGS) reaction over gold supported on a ceria-zirconia catalyst was examined. Although the fresh catalyst has very high low temperature (<200 degrees C) for WGS activity, a significant loss of CO conversion is found under steady-state operations over hours. This has been shown to be directly related to the concentration of water in the gas phase. The same catalyst also undergoes thermal deactivation above 250 degrees C, and using a combined experimental and theoretical approach, a common deactivation mechanism is proposed. In both cases, the gold nanoparticles, which are found under reaction conditions, are thought to detach from the oxide support either through hydrolysis, <200 degrees C, or thermally, > 200 degrees C. This process reduces the metal-support interaction, which is considered to be critical in determining the high activity of the catalyst.

The chemisorption and reactivity of SO2 on Pt{111} have been studied by HREELS, XPS, NEXAFS and temperature-programmed desorption. At 160 K SO2 adsorbs intact at high coverages, with eta(2) S-O coordination to the surface. On annealing to 270 K, NEXAFS indicates the SO2 molecular plane essentially perpendicular to the surface. Preadsorbed O-a reacts with SO2 to yield adsorbed SO4, identified as the key surface species responsible for SO2-promoted catalytic alkane oxidation. Coadsorbed CO or propene efficiently reduce SO2 overlayers to deposit S-a, and the implications of this for catalytic systems are discussed.

PtRu/Ti anodes with varying Pt : Ru ratio were prepared by electrodeposition of a thin PtRu catalyst layer onto Ti mesh for a direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC). The morphology and structure of the catalyst layers were analyzed by SEM, EDX and XRD. The catalyst coating layer shows an alloy character. The relative activities of the PtRu/Ti electrodes were assessed and compared in half cell and single DMFC experiments. The results show that these electrodes are very active for the methanol oxidation and that the optimum Ru surface coverage was ca. 9 at.% for DMFC operating at 20°C and 11 at.% at 60°C. The PtRu/Ti anode shows a performance comparable to that of the conventional carbon-based anode in a DMFC operating with 0.25 M or 0.5 M methanol solution and atmosphere oxygen gas at 90°C. © the Owner Societies 2006.

The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity of Pt/C catalysts was investigated in electrolytes of 0.5 mol/L H2SO4 containing varying concentrations of methanol in a half-cell. It was found that the ORR activity was improved notably in an electrolyte of 0.5 mol/L H2SO4 containing 0.1 mol/L CH3OH as compared with that in 0.5 mol/L H2SO4, 0.5 mol/L H2SO4 containing 0.5 mol/L CH3OH, or 0.5 mol/L H2SO4 containing 1.0 mol/L CH3OH electrolytes. The same tendency for improved ORR activity was also apparent after commercial Nafion (R) NRE-212 membrane was hot-pressed onto the catalyst layers. The linear sweep voltammetry results indicate that the ORR activities of the Pt/C catalyst were almost identical in the 0.5 mol/L H2SO4 + 0.1 mol/L CH3OH solution before and after coated with the Nafion (R) membrane. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results demonstrated that the resistance of the Nafion (R) membrane is smaller in the electrolyte of 0.5 mol/L H2SO4 + 0.1 mol/L CH3OH than in other electrolytes with oxygen gas feed. This exceptional property of the Nafion (R) membrane is worth investigating and can be applied in fuel cell stacks to improve the system performance. Methods to control the dispersion of gold in supported heterogeneous catalysts are very valuable due to the strong nanoparticle size dependence on their activity and selectivity towards many reactions. Additionally, the ability to disperse large, inactive gold nanoparticles to smaller nanoparticles provides an opportunity to reactivate, stabilise and increase the lifetime of gold catalysts making them more practical for industrial applications. Previously it has been demonstrated that the use of gas phase iodomethane (J. Am. Chem. Soc., 2009, 131, 6973; Angew. Chem., Int. Ed., 2011, 50, 8912) was able to re-disperse gold from >20 nm particles to dimers and trimers. In the current work, we show that this technique can be applied using less hazardous halohydrocarbons treatments, both in the gas phase and the liquid phase. The ability of these individual halohydrocarbons to re-disperse gold as well as the extent to which leaching occurs is assessed.

Indium tin oxide (ITO) was used as a support for IrO2 catalyst in the oxygen evolution reaction. IrO2 nanoparticles were deposited in various loading on commercially available ITO nanoparticle, 17–28 nm in size using the Adam's fusion method. The prepared catalysts were characterised using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The BET surface area of the support (35 m2/g) was 3 times lower than the unsupported IrO2 (112.7 m2/g). The surface area and electronic conductivity of the catalysts were predominantly contributed by the IrO2. The supported catalysts were tested in a membrane electrode assembly (MEA) for electrolyser operation. The 90% IrO2-ITO gave similar performance (1.74 V@1 A/cm2) to that of the unsupported IrO2 (1.73 V@1 A/cm2) in the MEA polarisation test at 80 °C with Nafion 115 membrane which was attributed to a better dispersion of the active IrO2 on the electrochemically inactive ITO support, giving rise to smaller catalyst particle and thereby higher surface area. Large IrO2 particles on the support significantly reduced the electrode performance. A comparison of TiO2 and ITO as support material showed that, 60% IrO2 loading was able to cover the support surface and giving sufficient conductivity to the catalyst.
