The human respiratory tract of individuals with normal lung function maintains a fine-tuned balance, being asymptomatically colonised by the normal microbiota in the upper airways and sterile in the lower tract. This equilibrium may be disrupted by the exposure to insults such as cigarette smoke. In the respiratory tract, the complex and noxious nature of inhaled cigarette smoke alters host-microorganisminteraction dynamics at all anatomical levels, causing infections in many cases. Moreover, continuous exposure to cigarette smoke itself causes deleterious effects on the host that can trigger the development of chronic respiratory diseases, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and lung cancer. COPD is an irreversible airflow obstruction associated with emphysema, fibrosis, mucus hypersecretion and persistent colonisation of the lower airways by opportunistic pathogens. COPD patients keep a stable (without exacerbation) but progressively worsening condition and suffer periodic exacerbations caused, in most cases, by infections. Although smoking and smoking-associated diseases are associated with a high risk of infection, most therapies aim to reduce inflammatory parameters, but do not necessarily take into account the presence of persistent colonisers. The effect of cigarette smoke on host-pathogen interaction dynamics in the respiratory tract, together with current and novel therapies, is discussed. Copyright©ERS 2012.

The current study monitors both the short- and long-term hydration characteristics of concrete using discretized conductivity measurements from initial gauging, through setting and hardening, the latter comprising both the curing and post-curing periods. In particular, attention is directed to the near-surface concrete as it is this zone which protects the steel from the external environment and has a major influence on durability, performance and service-life. A wide range of concrete mixes is studied comprising both plain Portland cement concretes and concretes containing fly-ash and ground granulated blast furnace slag. The parameter normalised conductivity was used to identify four distinct stages in the hydration process and highlight the influence of supplementary cementitious materials (SCM) on hydration and hydration kinetics. A relationship has been presented to account for the temporal decrease in conductivity, post 10-days hydration. The testing procedure and methodology presented lend itself to in-situ monitoring of reinforced concrete structures. (c) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Objective: We report three cases of lateral outfracture of the inferior turbinate, which demonstrate a range of changes in the size, position and shape of the inferior turbinate.

Method: During a study of the validity of computer modelling of nasal airflow, computed tomography scans of the noses of patients who had undergone lateral outfracture of the inferior turbinate were collected. The pre-operative scan was compared with the post-operative scan six weeks later.

Results: In one patient, there was only a small lateral displacement of the inferior turbinate. In the other two cases, appreciable reduction in the volume of one inferior turbinate was noted, in addition to minor changes in the shape.

Conclusion: Lateral outfracture of the inferior turbinate produces varied and inconsistent changes in morphology which may affect the shape, size and position of the turbinate.

The effect of superficial air velocity on lovastatin production by Aspergillus terreus PL10 using wheat bran and wheat straw was investigated in a 7 l and a 1200 l packed bed reactor. Mass transfer and reaction limitations on bioconversion in the 1200 l reactor was studied based on a central composite design of experiments constructed using the superficial air velocity and solid substrate composition as variables and lovastatin production as response.
The surface response prediction showed a maximum lovastatin production of 1.86 mg g-1 dry substrate on day 5 of the bioconversion process when the reactor was operated using 0.19 vvm airflow rate (23.37 cm min-1 superficial air velocity) and 54% substrate composition (wC). Lovastatin production did not increase significantly with superficial air velocity in the 7 l reactor. Variation in temperature and exit CO2 composition was recorded, and the Damköhler number was calculated for lovastatin production at these two scales. The results showed that in larger reactors mass transfer limitation controlled bioconversion while in smaller reactors bioconversion was controlled by reaction rate limitations. In addition, mass transfer limitations in larger reactors reduced the rate of metabolic heat removal, resulting in hot spots within the substrate bed.

Lovastatin biosynthesis depends on the relative concentrations of dissolved oxygen and the carbon and nitrogen resources. An elucidation of the underlying relationship would facilitate the derivation of a controller for the improvement of lovastatin yield in bioprocesses. To achieve this goal, batch submerged cultivation experiments of lovastatin production by Aspergillus flavipus BICC 5174, using both lactose and glucose as carbon sources, were performed in a 7 liter bioreactor and the data used to determine how the relative concentrations of lactose, glucose, glutamine and oxygen affected lovastatin yield. A model was developed based on these results and its prediction was validated using an independent set of batch data obtained from a 15-liter bioreactor using five statistical measures, including the Willmott index of agreement. A nonlinear controller was designed considering that dissolved oxygen and lactose concentrations could be measured online, and using the lactose feed rate and airflow rate as process inputs. Simulation experiments were performed to demonstrate that a practical implementation of the nonlinear controller would result in satisfactory outcomes. This is the first model that correlates lovastatin biosynthesis to carbon-nitrogen proportion and possesses a structure suitable for implementing a strategy for controlling lovastatin production.

This paper presents the results of field geophysical testing and laboratory testing of peat from Carn Park and Roosky raised bogs in the Irish Midlands. The motivation for the work was highlight the importance of these areas and to begin to attempt to understand the reasons for the failure of the bogs despite them having surface slopes of some 1°. It was found that the peat is typical of that of Irish raised bogs being up to 8m thick towards the “high” dome of the bogs. The peat is characterised by low density, high water content, high organic content, low undrained shear strength and high compressibility. The peat is also relatively permeable at in situ stress. Geophysical electrical resistivity tomography and ground penetrating radar data shows a clear thinning of the peat in the area of the failures corresponding to a reduction in volume from dewatering by edge drains/peat harvesting. This finding is supported by detailed water content measurements. It was also shown that the peat base topography is relatively flat and indicates that the observed surface movement has come from within the peat rather than from the material below the peat. Potential causes of the failures include conventional slope instability, the effect of seepage forces or the release of built-up gas in the peat mass. Further measurements are required in order to study these in more detail.

Contaminants discharging from on-site wastewater treatment systems (OSWTSs) can impact groundwater quality, threatening human health and surface water ecosystems. Risk of negative impacts becomes elevated in areas of extreme vulnerability with high water tables, where thin unsaturated intervals limit vadose zone attenuation. A combined geophysical/hydrogeological investigation into the effects of an OSWTS, located over a poorly productive aquifer (PPA) with thin subsoil cover, aimed to characterise effluent impacts on groundwater. Groundwater, sampled from piezometers down-gradient of the OSWTS percolation area displayed spatially erratic, yet temporally consistent, contaminant distributions. Electrical resistivity tomography identified an area of gross groundwater contamination close to the percolation area and, when combined with seismic refraction and water quality data, indicated that infiltrating effluent reaching the water table discharged to a deeper more permeable zone of weathered shale resting on more competent bedrock. Subsurface structure, defined by geophysics, indicated that elevated chemical and microbiological contaminant levels encountered in groundwater samples collected from piezometers, down-gradient of sampling points with lower contaminant levels, corresponded to those locations where piezometers were screened close to the weathered shale/competent rock interface; those immediately up-gradient were too shallow to intercept this interval, and thus the more impacted zone of the contaminant plume. Intermittent occurrence of faecal indicator bacteria more than 100 m down gradient of the percolation area suggested relatively short travel times. Study findings highlight the utility of geophysics as part of multidisciplinary investigations for OSWTS contaminant plume characterisation, while also demonstrating the capacity of effluent discharging to PPAs to impact groundwater quality at distance. Comparable geophysical responses observed in similar settings across Ireland suggest the phenomena observed in this study are more widespread than previously suspected.

Lightning strike is one of the challenges that the aerospace industry is facing in an effort to increase the percentage of composite materials used in aircraft structures. Lightning strike damage is due to high orthotropic electric resistivity of the composite panels, which leads to high thermal loads that cause decomposition of the epoxy and delimitations of the laminates. Yet, experimental testing of lightning strike on aircraft panels is expensive due to the large number of design parameters that can control the inflicted damage. A coupled thermal-electrical finite element analysis is used to investigate the design variables space that can affect lightning strike damage on epoxy/graphite composite panels. The contribution of this study is modeling the composite panels’ material properties as temperature dependent, which was excluded by other researchers. A number of practical solutions to minimize the damage effect are proposed. Two set of experimental results are used to verify the numerical ones. One experimental set for plain composite panel, and second one for composite panels with joints

Accurate conceptual models of groundwater systems are essential for correct interpretation of monitoring data in catchment studies. In surface-water dominated hard rock regions, modern ground and surface water monitoring programmes often have very high resolution chemical, meteorological and hydrological observations but lack an equivalent emphasis on the subsurface environment, the properties of which exert a strong control on flow pathways and interactions with surface waters. The reasons for this disparity are the complexity of the system and the difficulty in accurately characterising the subsurface, except locally at outcrops or in boreholes. This is particularly the case in maritime north-western Europe, where a legacy of glacial activity, combined with large areas underlain by heterogeneous igneous and metamorphic bedrock, make the structure and weathering of bedrock difficult to map or model. Traditional approaches which seek to extrapolate information from borehole to field-scale are of limited application in these environments due to the high degree of spatial heterogeneity. Here we apply an integrative and multi-scale approach, optimising and combining standard geophysical techniques to generate a three-dimensional geological conceptual model of the subsurface in a catchment in NE Ireland. Available airborne LiDAR, electromagnetic and magnetic data sets were analysed for the region. At field-scale surface geophysical methods, including electrical resistivity tomography, seismic refraction, ground penetrating radar and magnetic surveys, were used and combined with field mapping of outcrops and borehole testing. The study demonstrates how combined interpretation of multiple methods at a range of scales produces robust three-dimensional conceptual models and a stronger basis for interpreting groundwater and surface water monitoring data.

Recent experiments on Au break junctions [Phys. Rev. Lett. 88 (2002) 216803] have characterized the nonlinear conductance of stretched short Au nanowires. They reveal in the voltage range 10-20 meV the signatures of dissipation effects, likely due to phonons in the nanowire, reducing the conductance below the quantized value of 2e(2)/h. We present here a theory, based on a model tight-binding Hamiltonian and on non-equilibrium Green's function techniques, which accounts for the main features of the experiment. The theory helps in revealing details of the experiment which need to be addressed with a more realistic, less idealized, theoretical framework. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The new Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) 2011 document recommends a combined assessment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) based on current symptoms and future risk.

A large database of primary-care COPD patients across the UK was used to determine COPD distribution and characteristics according to the new GOLD classification. 80 general practices provided patients with a Read code diagnosis of COPD. Electronic and hand searches of patient medical records were undertaken, optimising data capture.

Data for 9219 COPD patients were collected. For the 6283 patients with both forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) and modified Medical Research Council scores (mean¡SD age 69.2¡10.6 years, body mass index 27.3¡6.2 kg?m-2), GOLD 2011 group distributions were: A (low risk and fewer symptoms) 36.1%, B (low risk and more symptoms) 19.1%, C (high risk and fewer symptoms) 19.6% and D (high risk and more symptoms) 25.3%. This is in contrast with GOLD 2007 stage classification: I (mild) 17.1%, II (moderate) 52.2%, III (severe) 25.5% and IV (very severe) 5.2%. 20% of patients with FEV1 o50% predicted had more than two exacerbations in the previous 12 months. 70% of patients with FEV1 ,50% pred had fewer than two exacerbations in the previous 12 months.

This database, representative of UK primary-care COPD patients, identified greater proportions of patients in the mildest and most severe categories upon comparing 2011 versus 2007 GOLD classifications. Discordance between airflow limitation severity and exacerbation risk was observed.

Alkali activated slag (AAS) is an alternative cementitious material. Sodium silicate solution is usually used to activate ground granulated blast furnace slag to produce AAS. As a consequence, the pore solution chemistry of AAS differs from that of Portland cement (PC). Although AAS offers many advantages over PC, such as higher strength, superior resistance to acid and sulphate environments and lower embodied carbon due to 100% PC replacement, there is a need to assess its performance against chloride induced corrosion duo to its different pore solution chemistry. For PC systems, resistivity measurement, as a type of nondestructive test, is usually used to evaluate its chloride diffusivity and the corrosion rate of the embedded steel. However, due to the different pore solution chemistry present in the different AAS systems, the application of this test in AAS concretes would be questionable as the resistivity of concrete is highly dependent on its conductivity of the pore solution. Therefore, a study was carried out using twelve AAS concretes mixes, the results of which are reported in this paper. The AAS mixes were designed with alkali concentration of 4%, 6% and 8% (Na2O% of the mass of slag) and modulus (Ms) of sodium silicate solution of 0.75, 1.00, 1.50 and 2.00. A PC concrete with the same binder content as the AAS concretes was also studied as a reference. The chloride diffusion coefficient was determined using a non-steady state chloride diffusion test (NT BUILD 443). The resistivity of the concretes before the diffusion test was also measured. Macrocell corrosion current (corrosion rate) for steel rods embedded in the concretes was measured whilst subjecting the concretes to a cyclic chloride ponding regime (1 day ponded with salt solution and 6 days drying). The results showed that the AAS concretes had lower chloride diffusivity with associated higher resistivity than the PC concrete. The measured corrosion rate was also lower for the AAS concretes. However, unlike the PC, in which a higher resistivity yields a lower diffusivity and corrosion rate, there was no relationship apparent between the resistivity and either the diffusivity or the corrosion rate of steel for the AAS concretes. This is assigned to the variation of the pore solution composition of the AAS concretes. This also means that resistivity measurements cannot be depended on for assessing the chloride induced corrosion resistance of AAS concretes.

This paper reports an approach by which laboratory based testing and numerical modelling can be combined to predict the long term performance of a range of concretes exposed to marine environments. Firstly, a critical review of the test methods for assessing the chloride penetration resistance of concrete is given. The repeatability of the different test results is also included. In addition to the test methods, a numerical simulation model is used to explore the test data further to obtain long-term chloride ingress trends. The combined use of testing and modelling is validated with the help of long-term chloride ingress data from a North Sea exposure site. In summary, the paper outlines a methodology for determining the long term performance of concrete in marine environments.

This letter presents the design of a thin microwave absorber which exhibits a -10 dB reflectivity bandwidth of 108% at normal incidence and 16% for simultaneous suppression of TE and TM polarised waves over the angular range 0-45° is presented. The structure consists of a 3 mm-thick metal backed frequency selective surface (FSS) with four resistively loaded hexagonal loop elements in each unit cell. The surface resistivity and width of the loops are carefully chosen to maximise the bandwidth by merging the reflection nulls that are generated by the multi-resonant absorber. Measurement and simulation results are in good agreement over the broad frequency range 7.8-24 GHz.

Natural ventilation is a sustainable solution to maintaining healthy and comfortable environmental conditions in buildings. However, the effective design, construction and operation of naturally ventilated buildings require a good understanding of complex airflow patterns caused by the buoyancy and wind effects. The work presented in this article employed a 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis in order to investigate environmental conditions and thermal comfort of the occupants of a highly-glazed naturally ventilated meeting room. This analysis was facilitated by the real-time field measurements performed in an operating building, and previously developed formal calibration methodology for reliable CFD models of indoor environments. Since, creating an accurate CFD model of an occupied space in a real-life scenario requires a high level of CFD expertise, trusted experimental data and an ability to interpret model input parameters; the calibration methodology guided towards a robust and reliable CFD model of the indoor environment. This calibrated CFD model was then used to investigate indoor environmental conditions and to evaluate thermal comfort indices for the occupants of the room. Thermal comfort expresses occupants' satisfaction with thermal environment in buildings by defining the range of indoor thermal environmental conditions acceptable to a majority of occupants. In this study, the thermal comfort analysis, supported by both field measurements and CFD simulation results, confirmed a satisfactory and optimal room operation in terms of thermal environment for the investigated real-life scenario. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.
