Colourless single crystals of [Ag-3(Dat)(2)](NO3)(3) were obtained from a reaction of silver(l) nitrate and 3,5-dimethyl-4-amino-1,2,4-triazole (Dat). In the crystal structure (orthorhombic, Fdd2, Z = 8, a = 1100.1(2), b = 3500.3(2), c = 1015.4(3) pm, R, = 0.0434) there are two crystallographically non-equivalent silver sites in a one (Ag1) to two ratio (Ag2). Both resemble linear N-Ag-N coordination although angles are 163 degrees and 144 degrees, respectively Each Dat ligand coordinates with the two ring nitrogen atoms at 216 to 219 pm and with one amino-nitrogen atom at 229 pro. According to the composition [Ag-3(Dat)(2)](3+) = [(Dat)Ag-3/2](3+), a polymeric structure is built with all Ag+ ions bridging.

Colourless single crystals of [Hg(CF3)(2)(Pur)](4) and [Hg(CF3)(2)(Dat)](2) were obtained from aqueous and etheric solutions of the respective components Purine, (imidazo[4,5-d]pyrimidine, Pur), 3,5-dimethyl-4 '-amino-triazole (Dat) and bis(trifluoromethyl)mercury(II), Hg(CF3)(2). [Hg(CF3)(2)(Pur)](4) crystallizes with the tetragonal system (P-4, Z = 8, a = 1486.8(2), c = 1026.2(l) pm, R-all = 0.0657) with tetrameric molecules consisting of four purine molecules bridged by slightly bent Hg(CF3)2 molecules forming a cage with the CF3 ligands surrounding this cage. The two modifications of [Hg(Dat)(CF3)2]2 (1: 170 K, triclinic, P-1, Z = 2, a 814.9(2), b = 845.4(2), c = 968.4(3) pm, alpha = 106.55(2)degrees, beta= 103.41(2)degrees, gamma = 110.79(2)degrees, R-all = 0.1189; II: monoclinic, P2(1)/c, Z = 8, a = 879.8(2), b = 1731.0(3), c = 1593.9(3) pm, beta = 106.89(2)degrees, R-all = 0.1199) both contain dimeric molecules that are stacked parallel to one crystal axis to strands which are arranged in a parallel fashion in I and rotated against each other in 11 by 110 degrees. In both, the tetrameric [Hg(CF3)(2)(Pur)](4) and the dimeric [Hg(CF3)(2)(Dat)](2) the Hg(CF3)(2) molecules are slightly bent (around 167 and 170 degrees) and rather weakly attached to the N-donor ligands Pur and Dat with Hg-N distances around 272 pm, although in both cases the Hg atoms bridge between two ligand molecules.

Poly(vinyl alcohol)-borate complexes were evaluated as a potentially novel drug delivery platform suitable for in vivo use in photodynamic antimicrobial chemotherapy (PACT) of wound infections. An optimised formulation (8.0%w/w PVA, 2.0% w/w borax) was loaded with 1.0 mg ml(-1) of the photosensitisers Methylene Blue (MB) and meso-tetra (N-methyl-4-pyridyl) porphine tetra tosylate (TMP). Both drugs were released to yield receiver compartment concentrations (>5.0 mu g ml(-1)) found to be phototoxic to both planktonic and bicifilm-grown methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), a common cause of wound infections in hospitals. Newborn calf serum, used to simulate the conditions prevalent in an exuding wound, did not adversely affect the properties of the hydrogels and had no significant effect on the rate of TMP-mediated photodynamic kill of MRSA, despite appreciably reducing the fluence rate of incident light. However, MB-mediated photodynamic kill of MRSA was significantly reduced in the presence of calf serum and when the clinical isolate was grown in a biofilm. Results support the contention that delivery of MB or TMP using gel-type vehicles as part of PACT could make a contribution to the photodynamic eradication of MRSA from infected wounds. Polyol sugars, displaying a plurality Of hydroxyl groups, were shown to modulate tetra hydroxyborate (borate) cross-linking in lidocaine hydrochloride containing poly(vinyl alcohol) scini-solid hydrogels. Without polyol, demixing of borate cross-linked PVA hydrogels into two distinct phases was noticeable upon lidocaine hydrochloride addition, preventing further use as a topical System. D-Mannitol incorporation was found to be particularly suitable in cicumventing network constriction induced by ionic and pH effects upon adding the hydrochloride salt of lidocaine. A test formulation (4% w/v lidocaine HCl, 2% W/V D-mannitol, 10% w/v PVA and 2.5%, w/v THB) was shown to constitute an effective delivery system, which was characterised by an initial burst release and a drug release mechanism dependent on temperature, changing from a diffusion-controlled system to one with the properties of a reservoir system. The novel flow properties and innocuous adhesion of PVA-tetrahydroxyborate hydrogels Support their application for drug delivery to exposed epithelial surfaces, Such as lacerated wounds. Furthermore, addition of a polyol, such as mannitol, allows incorporation of soluble salt forms of active therapeutic agents by modulation of cross-linking density. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. CAN 122:105736 AN 1995:237497 CAPLUS (Copyright (C) 2009 ACS on SciFinder (R)) Abstract A novel biotransformation system for the redn. of carbon-carbon double bonds in 5-benzylidenethiazolidine-2,4-diones to give the corresponding 5-benzylthiazolidine-1,4-diones, using whole cells of red yeasts, is described. These reduced compds., which are recovered in good yield, are of potential use in the treatment of non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus. The mild reaction conditions developed allow redn. of 5-benzylidenethiazolidine-2,4-diones contg. other functionalities which are not compatible with alternative redn. methods. The biocatalytic redn. is enantioselective and the synthesis of R-(+)-5-(4-{2-[methyl(2-pyridyl)amino]ethoxy}benzyl)thiazolidine-2,4-dione by Rhodotorula rubra CBS 6469 and structure confirmation by X-ray crystallog. is detailed. Optimization of reaction conditions (including immobilization) for these whole cell redn. system is described.

Ionic liquids (ILs) having either cations or anions derived from naturally occurring amino acids have been synthesized and characterized as amino acid-based ionic liquids (AAILs) In this work, the experimental measurements of the temperature dependence or density. viscosity, heat capacity, and thermal conductivity of several AAILs, namely, tributylmethylammonium serinate ([N-444][Ser], tributylmethylammonium taurmate ([N-444][Tau]) tributylmethylammonium lysinate a [N-444][ Lys]), tributylmethylammonium threonate ([N-444][Thr]), tetrabutylphosphonium serinate ([P-4444][Ser]), tetrabutylphosphonium taurmate ([P-4444][Tau]), tetrabutylphosphonium lysinate ([P-4444][Lys]), tetrabutylphosphonium threonate P-4444 Thr tetrabutylphosphonium prolinate P-4444 ((Pro(), tetrabutylphosphonium valinate ([P-4444][Val]), and tetrabutylphosphonium cysteinate ([P-4444][Cys]), are presented The influence of cations and anions on studied properties is discussed. On the basis of experimental data. the QSPR (quantitative structure property relationship) correlations and group contribution methods for thermophysical properties of AAILs have been developed, which form the basis for the development of the computer-aided molecular design (CAMD) of AAILs It has also been demonstrated that that the predictive data obtained by con elation methods ale in good agreement with the experimental data The correlations developed, herein. can thus be used to evaluate the studied thermophysical properties of AAILs for use in process design or in the CAMD of new AAILs

Objective: To investigate the effect of alcohol intake patterns on ischaemic heart disease in two countries with contrasting lifestyles, Northern Ireland and France.
Design: Cohort data from the Prospective Epidemiological Study of Myocardial Infarction (PRIME) were analysed. Weekly alcohol consumption, incidence of binge drinking (alcohol >50 g on at least one day a week), incidence of regular drinking (at least one day a week, and alcohol <50 g if on only one occasion), volume of alcohol intake, frequency of consumption, and types of beverage consumed were assessed once at inclusion. All coronary events that occurred during the 10 year follow-up were prospectively registered. The relation between baseline characteristics and incidence of hard coronary events and angina events was assessed by Cox's proportional hazards regression analysis.
Setting: One centre in Northern Ireland (Belfast) and three centres in France (Lille, Strasbourg, and Toulouse).
Participants: 9778 men aged 50-59 free of ischaemic heart disease at baseline, who were recruited between 1991 and 1994.
Main outcome measures: Incident myocardial infarction and coronary death ("hard" coronary events), and incident angina pectoris.
Results: A total of 2405 men from Belfast and 7373 men from the French centres were included in the analyses, 1456 (60.5%) and 6679 (90.6%) of whom reported drinking alcohol at least once a week, respectively. Among drinkers, 12% (173/1456) of men in Belfast drank alcohol every day compared with 75% (5008/6679) of men in France. Mean alcohol consumption was 22.1 g/day in Belfast and 32.8 g/day in France. Binge drinkers comprised 9.4% (227/2405) and 0.5% (33/7373) of the Belfast and France samples, respectively. A total of 683 (7.0%) of the 9778 participants experienced ischaemic heart disease events during the 10 year follow-up: 322 (3.3%) hard coronary events and 361 (3.7%) angina events. Annual incidence of hard coronary events per 1000 person years was 5.63 (95% confidence interval 4.69 to 6.69) in Belfast and 2.78 (95% CI 2.41 to 3.20) in France. After multivariate adjustment for classic cardiovascular risk factors and centre, the hazard ratio for hard coronary events compared with regular drinkers was 1.97 (95% CI 1.21 to 3.22) for binge drinkers, 2.03 (95% CI 1.41 to 2.94) for never drinkers, and 1.57 (95% CI 1.11 to 2.21) for former drinkers for the entire cohort. The hazard ratio for hard coronary events in Belfast compared with in France was 1.76 (95% CI 1.37 to 2.67) before adjustment, and 1.09 (95% CI 0.79 to 1.50) after adjustment for alcohol patterns and wine drinking. Only wine drinking was associated with a lower risk of hard coronary events, irrespective of the country.
Conclusions: Regular and moderate alcohol intake throughout the week, the typical pattern in middle aged men in France, is associated with a low risk of ischaemic heart disease, whereas the binge drinking pattern more prevalent in Belfast confers a higher risk.

Aims: The aim of the study was to assess whether alcohol-related mortality data in the UK should be extended to include contributory as well as underlying cause of death. Methods: A total of 101,320 deaths registered in Northern Ireland between 2001 and 2007 were analysed to determine the quantity and characteristics of those with an underlying or contributory alcohol-related cause of death. Results: Alcohol was found to be an underlying cause of death in 1690 cases (1.7% of deaths) and a contributory cause in a further 1105 cases. Analyses show that the addition of alcohol-related contributory causes of deaths would increase the male-female ratio, result in steeper socio-economic gradients and amplify the apparent rate of increase of alcohol-related deaths. The significant contribution of alcohol to external causes of death, such as accidents and suicide, is also more evident. Conclusions: Using only underlying cause of death undoubtedly underestimates the burden of alcohol-related harm and may provide an inaccurate picture of those most likely to suffer from an alcohol-related death, especially among younger men.

There is a need to develop effective catalytic methods for alcohol oxidation. Pd(II) complexes have shown great promise as catalysts, however a comparatively small number of ligands have been reported so far. Herein we report the use of commercially available anionic N,O-ligands to produce highly active catalysts.
