Radical catalyzed thiol-ene reaction has become a useful alternative to the Huisgen-type click reaction as it helps to expand the variability in reaction conditions as well as the range of clickable entities. Thus, direct generation of hyper-branched polymers bearing peripheral allyl groups that could be clicked using a variety of functional thiols would be of immense value. A specifically designed AB(2) type monomer, that carries two allyl benzyl ethers groups and one alcohol functionality, was shown to undergo self-condensation under acid-catalyzed melt-transetherification to yield a hyperbranched polyether that carries numerous allyl end-groups. Importantly, it was shown that the kinetics of polymerization is not dramatically affected by the change of the ether unit from previously studied methyl benzyl ether to an allyl benzyl ether. The peripheral allyl groups were readily clicked quantitatively, using a variety of thiols, to generate an hydrocarbon-soluble octadecyl-derivative, amphiphilic systems using 2-mercaptoethanol and chiral amino acid (N-benzoyl cystine) derivatized hyperbranched structures; thus demonstrating the versatility of this novel class of clickable hyperscaffolds. A novel (main chain)-(side chain) vinyl polyperoxide, poly(alpha-(tert-butylperoxymethyl)styrene peroxide) (MCSCPP), an alternating copolymer of alpha-(tert-butylperoxymethyl)styrene (TPMS) and oxygen, has been synthesized by the oxidative polymerization of TPMS. The MCSCPP was characterized by H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, IR, DSC, EI-MS, and GC-MS studies. The overall activation energy (E(a)) for the degradation of MCSCPP was found to be 27 kcal/mol. Formaldehyde and alpha-(tert-butylperoxy)acetophenone (TPAP) were identified as the primary degradation products of MCSCPP; TPAP was found to undergo further degradation. The side chain peroxy groups were found to be thermally more stable than those in the main chain. Polymerization of styrene in the presence of MCSCPP as initiator, at 80 degrees C, follows classical kinetics. The presence of peroxy segments in the polystyrene chain was confirmed by both H-1 NMR and thermal decomposition studies. Interestingly, unlike other vinyl polyperoxides, the MCSCPP initiator shows an increase in molecular weight with conversion.

Hyperbranched polyurethanes, with varying oligoethyleneoxy spacer segments between the branching points, have been synthesized by a one-pot approach starting from the appropriately designed carbonyl azide that incorporates the different spacer segments. The structures of monomers and polymers were confirmed by IR and H-1-NMR spectroscopy. The solution viscosity of the polymers suggested that they were of reasonably high molecular weight. Reversal of terminal functional groups was achieved by preparing the appropriate monohydroxy dicarbonyl azide monomer. The large number of terminal isocyanate groups at the chain ends of such hyperbranched macromolecules caused them to crosslink prior to its isolation. However, carrying out the polymerization in the presence of 1 equiv of a capping agent, such as an alcohol, resulted in soluble polymers with carbamate chain ends. Using a biphenyl-containing alcohol as a capping agent, we have also prepared novel hyperbranched perbranched polyurethanes with pendant mesogenic segments. These mesogen-containing polyurethanes, however, did not exhibit liquid crystallinity probably due to the wholly aromatic rigid polymer backbone. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

This article describes the first comprehensive study on the use of a vinyl polyperoxide, namely poly(styrene peroxide) (PSP), an equimolar alternating copolymer of oxygen and styrene, as a photoinitiator for free radical polymerization of vinyl monomers like styrene. The molecular weight, yield, structure and thermal stability of polystyrene (PS) thus obtained are compared with PS made using a simple peroxide like di-t-butyl peroxide. Interestingly, the PS prepared using PSP contained PSP segments attached to its backbone preferably at the chain ends. This PSP-PS-PSP was further used as a thermal macroinitiator for the preparation of another block copolymer PS-b-PMMA by reacting PSP-PS-PSP with methyl methacrylate (MMA). The mechanism of block copolymerization has been discussed. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Poly(vinyl acetate peroxide) (PVACP) was prepared from vinyl acetate by free-radical-initiated oxidative polymerization. The polyperoxide was isolated and characterized by different spectroscopic methods. The extreme instability of PVACP was demonstrated by FTIR spectroscopy. The H-1- and C-13-NMR studies show the irregularities in the polyperoxide chain due to the cleavage reactions of the propagating peroxide radical. Thermal degradation studies using differential scanning calorimetry revealed that PVACP degrades at a lower temperature and the heat of degradation is in the same range as reported for other vinyl polyperoxides. A series of new photo-crosslinkable main-chain liquid-crystalline polymers containing bis(benzylidene)cycloalkanone units have been studied. These units in the polymers function as mesogens as well as photoactive centres. Polyesters with three different bis(4-hydroxybenzylidene)cycloalkanones corresponding to three cycloalkanones, namely cyclopentanone, cyclohexanone and cycloheptanone, have been prepared. Three dicarboxylic acids with ether linkages, which were derived from oligoethylene oxides, namely triethylene glycol, tetraethylene glycol and pentaethylene glycol, have been used as spacers in these polymers. Polymerization was carried out by both solution and interfacial polycondensation; the latter method gave high-molecular-weight polymers. Structural characterizations were done by ultra-violet, infra-red and H-1 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Liquid-crystalline properties were studied by differential scanning calorimetry and polarized-light optical microscopy. These polymers show a nematic mesophase. Liquid-crystalline transition temperatures were correlated with polymer structure. The decrease in transition temperature with increase in cycloalkanone ring size was explained in terms of the change in geometrical anisotropy of bis(benzylidene)cycloalkanone units. MNDO (modified neglect of differential overlap) calculations were performed on the model compounds, bis(4-acetyloxybenzylidene)cycloalkanone to elucidate the geometrical variation of the mesogenic units with cycloalkanone ring size. Studies of photolysis reveal the two kinds of photoreactions that proceed in these polymer systems, namely photoisomerization and photo-crosslinking. The former reaction disrupts the parallel stacking of the chromophores and is reflected as an increase in the ultra-violet spectral intensity. The favourability of these two reactions depends on the mobility of the polymer chains. When the photolysis was done below T-g, photo-crosslinking dominates over photoisomerization. Above T-g, photoisomerization is followed by photo-crosslinking. The photosensitivity of the polymers decreases with increase in size of the cycloalkanone ring.

A new series of multielement flame-retardant plasticizers containing polyethylene stibinite phosphate esters have been prepared by bulk polymerization from ethylene glycol with various antimony (III) aryloxydichlorides and arylphosphorodichloridates possessing various combinations of substituent [Cl,Br,NO2]. All the polymers are pink-coloured viscous fluids. They were characterized by inherent viscosity, density, IR, H-1, C-13 and P-31 NMR spectroscopy. The thermal behaviour of the polymers was compared by thermogravimetric analysis and correlated with their structures. The flammability studies were carried out by the limiting oxygen index test. The polymers containing P, Sb, N and Pr elements in their backbone show superior thermal-and flame-retardant characteristics than the other polymers. A comparative study was carried out with one of the synthesized polymers as a polymeric flame-retardant additive to plasticized PVC. The results showed improved LOI and mechanical properties to that of the conventional flame-retardant additive composition. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

A hybrid thermosetting maleimido epoxy compound 4-(N-maleimidophenyl) glycidylether (N-MPGE) containing Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) ions was prepared by curing N-MPGE and tetradentate Schiff base Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes. The curing polymerization reaction of N-MPGE with metal complexes as curing agents was studied. The cured samples were studied for thermal stability, chemical (acid/alkali/solvent) and water absorption resistance and homogeneity of the cured systems. The tetradentate Schiff base, 3-(Z)-2-piperazin-1-yl-ethylimino]-1,3-dihydro indol-2-one was synthesized by the condensation of Isatin (Indole-2, 3-dione) with 1-(2-aminoethyl)piperazine (AEP). Its complexes with Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) have been synthesized and characterized by microanalysis, conductivity, Uv-Visible, FT-IR, TGA and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The spectral data revealed that the ligand acts as a neutral tetradentate Schiff base and coordinating through the azomethine nitrogen, two piperazine nitrogen atoms and carbonyl oxygen.

Polyaniline (PANI) is one of the most extensively used conjugated polymers in the design of electrochemical sensors. In this study, we report electrochemical dye detection based on PANI for the adsorption of both anionic and cationic dyes from solution. The inherent property of PANI to adsorb dyes has been explored for the development of electrochemical detection of dye in solution. The PANI film was grown on electrode via electrochemical polymerization. The as grown PANI film could easily adsorb the dye in the electrolyte solution and form an insulating layer on the PANI coated electrode. As a result, the current intensity of the PANI film was significantly altered. Furthermore, PANI coated stainless steel (SS) electrodes show a change in the current intensity of Fe2+/Fe3+ redox peaks due to the addition of dye in electrolyte solution. PANI films coated on both Pt electrodes and non-expensive SS electrodes showed the concentration of dye adsorbed is directly proportional to the current intensity or potential shift and thus can be used for the quantitative detection of textile dyes at very low concentrations. We report the first synthesis of hyperbranched polyacetals via a melt transacetalization polymerization process. The process proceeds via the self-condensation of an AB(2) type monomer carrying a hydroxyl group and a dimethylacetal unit; the continuous removal of low boiling methanol drives the equilibrium toward polymer formation. Because of the susceptibility of the acetal linkage to hydrolysis, the polymer degrades readily under mildly acidic conditions to yield the corresponding hydroxyl aldehyde as the primary product. Furthermore, because of the unique topology of hyperbranched structures, the rate of polymer degradation was readily tuned by changing just the nature of the end-groups alone; instead of the dimethylacetal bearing monomer, longer chain dialkylacetals (dibutyl and dihexyl) monomers yielded hyperbranched polymers carrying longer alkyl groups at their molecular periphery. The highly branched topology and the relatively high volume fraction of the terminal alkyl groups resulted in a significant lowering of the ingress rates of the aqueous reagents to the loci of degradation, and consequently the degradation rates of the polymers were dramatically influenced by the hydrophobic nature of the terminal alkyl substituents. The simple synthesis and easy tunability of the degradation rates make these materials fairly attractive candidates for use as degradable scaffolds.

Polyaniline (PANI) has been studied as an active material for electrochemical capacitors. Polymerization of aniline to PANI has been carried out potentiodynamically on a stainless steel (SS) substrate, instead of Pt-based substrates generally employed for this application. The PANI/SS electrodes have been evaluated by assembling symmetrical capacitors in NaClO(4) + HClO(4) mixed electrolyte and subjecting them to galvanostatic charge/discharge cycles between 0 and 0.75 V. The effect of substrate has been assessed by comparing the capacitance of PANI/SS and PANI/Pt electrodes. The capacitance of PANI/SS electrode is higher than that of PANI/Pt electrode by several times. The effect of sweep rate of potentiodynamic deposition of PANI/SS on capacitance has been investigated. At a power density of 0.5 kW kg(-1), a capacitance value of 815 F g(-1) of PANI is obtained for the deposition sweep rate of 200 mV s(-1). Increase in thickness of PANI on the SS substrate results in an increase in capacitance of PANI. This value of capacitance is the highest ever reported for any electrochemical capacitor material. Thus, in addition to a favorable economic aspect involved in using SS instead of Pt or Pt-based substrate, the advantage of higher capacitance of PANI has also been achieved. Electrical conductivity and thermopower are studied in the conducting polymer polypyrrole doped with varying levels of the dopant hexafluoro phosphate (PF6). A single sample is prepared by galvanostatic electrochemical polymerization at -40 degreesC. From this sample, six samples having different dopant levels and correspondingly different conductivity are prepared by dedoping. Low temperature d.c. electrical conductivity measurement shows the metal-insulator transition from fully doped sample to dedoped samples. On the metallic side the data are fitted to the localization-interaction model. In critical regime, it follows the power law. On the insulating side, it is variable range hopping. Thermopower measurements are done in the temperature range 300 K to 20 K. Thermopower is linear for samples on the metallic side and becomes more and more non-linear on the insulating side. It is described using a combination of the linear metallic term and the non-linear hopping term. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Copolymers of aniline and ortholmeta-amino benzoic acid were synthesized by chemical polymerization using an inverse emulsion pathway. The copolymers are soluble in organic solvents, and the solubility increases with the amino benzoic acid content in the feed. The reaction conditions were optimized with emphasis on high yield and relatively good conductivity (2.5 X 10(-1) S cm(-1)). The copolymers were characterized by a number of techniques including UV-vis, FT-IR, FT-Raman, EPR and NNM spectroscopy, thermal analysis, SEM and conductivity. The influence of the carboxylic acid group ring substituent on the copolymers is investigated. The spectral studies reveal that the amino benzoic acid groups restrict the conjugation along the polymer chain. The SEM micrographs of the copolymers reveal regions of amorphous and crystalline domain. Thermal studies indicate a marginally higher thermal stability for poly(aniline-co-m-amino benzoic acid) compared to poly(aniline-co-o-amino benzoic acid). (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. A novel (main-chain)-(side-chain) vinyl polyperoxide, poly(dipentene peroxide)(PDP), an alternating copolymer of dipentene (DP) and oxygen, has been synthesized by thermal oxidative polymerization of DP. The PDP was characterized by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, FTIR, DSC, TGA, and EI-MS studies. The overall activation energies of the degradation from Kissinger’s method were 28 and 33 kcal/mol, respectively, for the endocyclic and acyclic peroxide units. The side-chain peroxy groups were found to be thermally more stable than the main chain. Above 45°C the rate of polymerization increases sharply at a particular instant showing an “autoacceleration” with the formation of knee point. The kinetics of autoacceleration has been studied at various temperatures (45–70°C) and pressures (50–250 psi). © 2000 John Wiley&Sons, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 79: 1549–1555, 2001
