The capturability of a realistic generalized true proportional navigation (RGTPN) guidance law, against a nonmaneuvering target, is analyzed. The RGTPN law is obtained by relaxing the somewhat unrealistic assumption of constant closing velocity, made in all earlier studies on generalized true proportional navigation (GTPN), and incorporating the actual time-varying value in the guidance law. Closed-form solutions for the complete capture region of RGTPN is obtained in terms of both zero and acceptable non-zero miss distances. It is shown that the capture region of RGTPN in the initial relative velocity space is significantly smaller than that of GTPN, for reasonable values of navigation constant (N) and angular direction (eta) of the missile commanded latax. However, for certain values of N and eta, capturability of RGTPN is found to be better. It is also shown that if in one of the versions of GTPN, which uses constant values of both the closing velocity and the line-of-sight (LOS) angular velocity in the guidance law, the corresponding realistic time-varying quantities are used, the capture region actually expands to cover the whole of the initial relative velocity space. A number of examples are given to compare the capture performance of RGTPN with other versions of the GTPN guidance laws.

beta protein, a key component of Red-pathway of phage lambda is necessary for its growth and general genetic recombination in recombination-deficient mutants of Escherichia coli. To facilitate studies on structure-function relationships, we overexpressed beta protein and purified it to homogeneity. A chemical cross-linking reagent, glutaraldehyde, was used to stabilize the physical association of beta protein in solution. A 67-kDa band, corresponding to homodimer, was identified after separation by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Stoichiometric measurements indicated a site-size of 1 monomer of beta protein/5 nucleotide residues. Electrophoretic gel mobility shift assays suggested that beta protein formed stable nucleoprotein complexes with 36-mer, but not with 27- or 17-mer DNA. Interestingly, the interaction of beta protein with DNA and the stability of nucleoprotein complexes was dependent on the presence of MgCl2, and the binding was abolished by 250 mM NaCl. The K-d of beta protein binding to 36-mer DNA was on the order of 1.8 x 10(-6) M. Photochemical cross-linking of native beta protein or its fragments, generated by chymotrypsin, to 36-mer DNA was performed to identify its DNA-binding domain. Characterization of the cross-linked peptide disclosed that amino acids required for DNA-binding specificity resided within a 20-kDa peptide at the N-terminal end. These findings provide a basis for further understanding oi the structure and function of beta protein.

The variation of the viscosity as a function of the sequence distribution in an A-B random copolymer melt is determined. The parameters that characterize the random copolymer are the fraction of A monomers f, the parameter lambda which determines the correlation in the monomer identities along a chain and the Flory chi parameter chi(F) which determines the strength of the enthalpic repulsion between monomers of type A and B. For lambda>0, there is a greater probability of finding like monomers at adjacent positions along the chain, and for lambda<0 unlike monomers are more likely to be adjacent to each other. The traditional Markov model for the random copolymer melt is altered to remove ultraviolet divergences in the equations for the renormalized viscosity, and the phase diagram for the modified model has a binary fluid type transition for lambda>0 and does not exhibit a phase transition for lambda<0. A mode coupling analysis is used to determine the renormalization of the viscosity due to the dependence of the bare viscosity on the local concentration field. Due to the dissipative nature of the coupling. there are nonlinearities both in the transport equation and in the noise correlation. The concentration dependence of the transport coefficient presents additional difficulties in the formulation due to the Ito-Stratonovich dilemma, and there is some ambiguity about the choice of the concentration to be used while calculating the noise correlation. In the Appendix, it is shown using a diagrammatic perturbation analysis that the Ito prescription for the calculation of the transport coefficient, when coupled with a causal discretization scheme, provides a consistent formulation that satisfies stationarity and the fluctuation dissipation theorem. This functional integral formalism is used in the present analysis, and consistency is verified for the present problem as well. The upper critical dimension for this type of renormaliaation is 2, and so there is no divergence in the viscosity in the vicinity of a critical point. The results indicate that there is a systematic dependence of the viscosity on lambda and chi(F). The fluctuations tend to increase the viscosity for lambda<0, and decrease the viscosity for lambda>0, and an increase in chi(F) tends to decrease the viscosity. Interest in the applicability of fluctuation theorems to the thermodynamics of single molecules in external potentials has recently led to calculations of the work and total entropy distributions of Brownian oscillators in static and time-dependent electromagnetic fields. These calculations, which are based on solutions to a Smoluchowski equation, are not easily extended to a consideration of the other thermodynamic quantity of interest in such systems-the heat exchanges of the particle alone-because of the nonlinear dependence of the heat on a particle's stochastic trajectory. In this paper, we show that a path integral approach provides an exact expression for the distribution of the heat fluctuations of a charged Brownian oscillator in a static magnetic field. This approach is an extension of a similar path integral approach applied earlier by our group to the calculation of the heat distribution function of a trapped Brownian particle, which was found, in the limit of long times, to be consistent with experimental data on the thermal interactions of single micron-sized colloids in a viscous solvent.

A sample of 96 compact flat-spectrum extragalactic sources, spread evenly over all galactic latitudes, has been studied at 327 MHz for variability over a time interval of about 15 yr. The variability shows a dependence on galactic latitude being less both at low and high latitudes and peaking around absolute value of b approximately 15-degrees. The latitude dependence is surprisingly similar in both the galactic centre and anticentre directions. Assuming various single and multi-component distributions for the ionized, irregular interstellar plasma, we have tried to generate the observed dependence using a semi-qualitative treatment of refractive interstellar scintillations. We find that it is difficult to fit our data with any single or double component cylindrical distribution. Our data suggests that the observed variability could be influenced by the spiral structure of our Galaxy.

A total of 76 species of macrolichens were recorded from 16 transects of 50 m x 10 m between altitudes of 2100 m and 4500 m in western parts of Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve of Garhwal Himalayas. Forty-one of these are lignicolous species occurring on woody, 14 are terricolous growing on soil and 10 are saxicolous inhabiting rocks only, The other 11 species occur on more than one major types of substrate, Lichen species diversity is at its highest in middle altitudes between 2700 m and 3700 m where all three major substrates are simultaneously available, Lichen species diversity of Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve appears to be under threat from deforestation and fires, as well as from loss of soil microhabitats due to overgrowth of weeds seemingly caused by cessation of summer grazing in alpine pastures.

The nuclear magnetic resonance imaging technique has been used to obtain images of different transverse and vertical sections in groundnut and sunflower seeds. Separate images have been obtained for oil and water components in the seeds. The spatial distribution of oil and water inside the seed has been obtained from the detailed analysis of the images. In the immature groundnut seeds obtained commercially, complementary oil and water distributions have been observed. Attempts have been made to explain these results.

Oxidative addition of tetrachloro-ortho-benzoquinone to lambda(3)-cyclotriphosphazanes, [EtNP(OR)](3) results in an unprecedented ring contraction-rearrangement to give diazadiphosphetidines (EtN)(2)[P(OR)(O2C6Cl4)] [P(O2C6Cl4)-[N(Et)P(OR)(2)}] (R = C6H4Br-4 or C(6)H(3)Me(2)-2,6), a process indicated to be thermodynamically favourable on the basis of PM3 calculations.

The weighted-least-squares method based on the Gauss-Newton minimization technique is used for parameter estimation in water distribution networks. The parameters considered are: element resistances (single and/or group resistances, Hazen-Williams coefficients, pump specifications) and consumptions (for single or multiple loading conditions). The measurements considered are: nodal pressure heads, pipe flows, head loss in pipes, and consumptions/inflows. An important feature of the study is a detailed consideration of the influence of different choice of weights on parameter estimation, for error-free data, noisy data, and noisy data which include bad data. The method is applied to three different networks including a real-life problem.

The paper examines the suitability of the generalized data rule in training artificial neural networks (ANN) for damage identification in structures. Several multilayer perceptron architectures are investigated for a typical bridge truss structure with simulated damage stares generated randomly. The training samples have been generated in terms of measurable structural parameters (displacements and strains) at suitable selected locations in the structure. Issues related to the performance of the network with reference to hidden layers and hidden. neurons are examined. Some heuristics are proposed for the design of neural networks for damage identification in structures. These are further supported by an investigation conducted on five other bridge truss configurations.

We use the Thomas-Fermi method to examine the thermodynamics of particles obeying Haldane exclusion statistics. Specifically, we study Calogero-Sutherland particles placed in a given external potential in one dimension. For the case of a simple harmonic potential (constant density of states), we obtain the exact one-particle spatial density and a {\it closed} form for the equation of state at finite temperature, which are both new results. We then solve the problem of particles in a $x^{2/3} ~$ potential (linear density of states) and show that Bose-Einstein condensation does not occur for any statistics other than bosons.

Analytical solutions of the generalized Bloch equations for an arbitrary set of initial values of the x, y, and z magnetization components are given in the rotating frame. The solutions involve the decoupling of the three coupled differential equations such that a third-order differential equation in each magnetization variable is obtained. In contrast to the previously reported solutions given by Torrey, the present attempt paves the way for more direct physical insight into the behavior of each magnetization component. Special cases have been discussed that highlight the utility of the general solutions. Representative trajectories of magnetization components are given, illustrating their behavior with respect to the values of off-resonance and initial conditions. (C) 1995 Academic Press, Inc.

Solution of generalized eigenproblem, K phi = lambda M phi, by the classical inverse iteration method exhibits slow convergence for some eigenproblems. In this paper, a modified inverse iteration algorithm is presented for improving the convergence rate. At every iteration, an optimal linear combination of the latest and the preceding iteration vectors is used as the input vector for the next iteration. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated for three typical eigenproblems, i.e. eigenproblems with distinct, close and repeated eigenvalues. The algorithm yields 29, 96 and 23% savings in computational time, respectively, for these problems. The algorithm is simple and easy to implement, and this renders the algorithm even more attractive.

This paper presents a new strategy for load distribution in a single-level tree network equipped with or without front-ends. The load is distributed in more than one installment in an optimal manner to minimize the processing time. This is a deviation and an improvement over earlier studies in which the load distribution is done in only one installment. Recursive equations for the general case, and their closed form solutions for a special case in which the network has identical processors and identical links, are derived. An asymptotic analysis of the network performance with respect to the number of processors and the number of installments is carried out. Discussions of the results in terms of some practical issues like the tradeoff relationship between the number of processors and the number of installments are also presented.

The presence of residual chlorine and organic matter govern the bacterial regrowth within a water distribution system. The bacterial growth model is essential to predict the spatial and temporal variation of all these substances throughout the system. The parameters governing the bacterial growth and biodegradable dissolved organic carbon (BDOC) utilization are difficult to determine by experimentation. In the present study, the estimation of these parameters is addressed by using simulation-optimization procedure. The optimal solution by genetic algorithm (GA) has indicated that the proper combination of parameter values are significant rather than correct individual values. The applicability of the model is illustrated using synthetic data generated by introducing noise in to the error-free measurements. The GA was found to be a potential tool in estimating the parameters controlling the bacterial growth and BDOC utilization. Further, the GA was also used for evaluating the sensitivity issues relating parameter values and objective function. It was observed that mu and k(cl) are more significant and dominating compared to the other parameters. But the magnitude of the parameters is also an important issue in deciding the dominance of a particular parameter. GA is found to be a useful tool in autocalibration of bacterial growth model and a sensitivity study of parameters.
