The present work explores the temperature dependent transport behavior of n-InN nanodot/p-Si(100) heterojunction diodes. InN nanodot (ND) structures were grown on a 20 nm InN buffer layer on p-Si(100) substrates. These dots were found to be single crystalline and grown along 001] direction. The junction between these two materials exhibits a strong rectifying behavior at low temperatures. The average barrier height (BH) was determined to be 0.7 eV from current-voltage-temperature, capacitance-voltage, and flat band considerations. The band offsets derived from built-in potential were found to be Delta E-C=1.8 eV and Delta E-V=1.3 eV and are in close agreement with Anderson's model. A study of radio intensity variations at seven frequencies in the range 0.3 to 90 GHz for compact extragalactic radio sources classified as BL Lacs and high- and low-optical polarization quasars (HPQs and LPQs) is presented. This include the results of flux-density monitoring of 33 compact sources for three years at 327 MHz with the Ooty Synthesis Radio Telescope. The degrees of 'short-term' (tau less than about 1 yr) variability for the three optical types are found to be indistinguishable at low frequencies (less than 1 GHz), pointing to an extrinsic origin for the low-frequency variability. At high frequencies, a distinct dependence on optical type is present, the variability increasing from LPQs, through HPQs to BL Lacs. This trend persists even when only sources with ultra-flat radio spectra (alpha greater than -0.2) are considered. Implications of this for the phenomenon of high-frequency variability and the proposed unification schemes for different optical types of active galactic nuclei are discussed.

A hard roller under normal load is driven by the flat surface of a soft disc. Corrugations are generated on the disc when certain surface morphological, load, speed and mechanical property-oriented conditions are met. The evolutionary process of corrugation generation and the preconditions necessary for it are investigated morphologically and mechanically for four disc materials: mild steel, brass, PTFE and PMMA.

The intercalation of linear alkylamines (C1-C4) in the two-dimensional (2D) Ising antiferromagnet, FePS3, has been investigated. Intercalation proceeds with a dilation of the interlayer distance. The expansion (approximately 3.8 angstrom) is the same for all four amine molecules, suggesting that they are oriented flat with respect to the layers. From an analysis of the products of deintercalation, it is concluded that the intercalated species are the alkylammonium cations and neutral amine molecules. The intercalated compounds are highly moisture sensitive, as reflected in the chemical nature of the intercalated species. Charge neutrality of the lattice after intercalation is preserved by the loss of Fe2+ ions from the lattice. These Fe2+ ions are further oxidized to form superparamagnetic Fe2O3 clusters, as confirmed by Mossbauer spectra and magnetic measurements. This was further corroborated by in situ EPR studies. The Fe-57 Mossbauer spectra of the intercalated compounds showed evidence for two species other than Fe2O3. On the basis of the observed isomer shifts and quadrupole splittings, they have been assigned to Fe2+ in an environment similar to that in FePS3 and in a distorted FePS3 environment. The temperature and field dependence of the magnetic susceptibility of single crystals of the amine-intercalated FePS3 have been measured. Their magnetic behavior shows many of the features expected of a 2D Ising antiferromagnet with random defects, Fe1-xPS3, in agreement with the mechanism of intercalation.

Clustered VLIW architectures solve the scalability problem associated with flat VLIW architectures by partitioning the register file and connecting only a subset of the functional units to a register file. However, inter-cluster communication in clustered architectures leads to increased leakage in functional components and a high number of register accesses. In this paper, we propose compiler scheduling algorithms targeting two previously ignored power-hungry components in clustered VLIW architectures, viz., instruction decoder and register file. We consider a split decoder design and propose a new energy-aware instruction scheduling algorithm that provides 14.5% and 17.3% benefit in the decoder power consumption on an average over a purely hardware based scheme in the context of 2-clustered and 4-clustered VLIW machines. In the case of register files, we propose two new scheduling algorithms that exploit limited register snooping capability to reduce extra register file accesses. The proposed algorithms reduce register file power consumption on an average by 6.85% and 11.90% (10.39% and 17.78%), respectively, along with performance improvement of 4.81% and 5.34% (9.39% and 11.16%) over a traditional greedy algorithm for 2-clustered (4-clustered) VLIW machine. Analyzing Cache Performance Bottlenecks of STM Applications and addressing them with Compiler's help
Resumo:
Software transactional memory (STM) is a promising programming paradigm for shared memory multithreaded programs as an alternative to traditional lock based synchronization. However adoption of STM in mainstream software has been quite low due to its considerable overheads and its poor cache/memory performance. In this paper, we perform a detailed study of the cache behavior of STM applications and quantify the impact of different STM factors on the cache misses experienced by the applications. Based on our analysis, we propose a compiler driven Lock-Data Colocation (LDC), targeted at reducing the cache overheads on STM. We show that LDC is effective in improving the cache behavior of STM applications by reducing the dcache miss latency and improving execution time performance.

A finite element method (FEM)-based study has been carried out for the design of flat microtensile samples to evaluate tensile properties of Pt-aluminide (PtAl) bond coats. The critical dimensions of the sample have been determined using a two-dimensional elastic stress analysis. In the present testing scheme, the ratio of the dimensions of the holding length to the fillet radius of the sample was found important to achieve failure within the gage length. The effect of gage length and grip head length also has been examined. The simulation predictions have been experimentally verified by conducting microtensile test of an actual PtAl bond coat at room temperature. The sample design and testing scheme suggested in this study have also been found suitable for evaluation of tensile properties at high temperature. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

larity solution is obtained for laminar 3D constant pressure flow with lateral streamline divergence. The similarity solution is shown to reduce to a Blasius solution for 2D flow over a flat plate. Measurements of velocity profiles are made to compare the similarity solution and are found to be in excellent agreement with the prediction

Design, fabrication and preliminary testing of a flat pump with millimetre thickness are described in this paper. The pump is entirely made of polymer materials barring the magnet and copper coils used for electromagnetic actuation. The fabrication is carried out using widely available microelectronic packaging machinery and techniques. Therefore, the fabrication of the pump is straightforward and inexpensive. Two types of prototypes are designed and built. One consists of copper coils that are etched on an epoxy plate and the other has wound insulated wire of 90 mu m diameter to serve as a coil. The overall size of the first pump is 25 mm x 25 mm x 3.6 mm including the 3.1 mm-thick NdFeB magnet of diameter 12 mm. It consists of a pump chamber of 20 mm x 20 mm x 0.8 mm with copper coils etched from a copper-clad epoxy plate using dry-film lithography and milled using a CNC milling machine, two passive valves and the pump-diaphragm made of Kapton film of 0.089 mm thickness. The second pump has an overall size of 35 mm x 35 mm x 4.4 mm including the magnet and the windings. A breadboard circuit and DC power supply are used to test the pump by applying an alternating square-wave voltage pulse. A water slug in a tube attached to the inlet is used to observe and measure the air-flow induced by the pump against atmospheric pressure. The maximum flow rate was found to be 15 ml/min for a voltage of 2.5 V and a current of 19 mA at 68 Hz.

The structure and organization of dodecyl sulfate (DDS) surfactant chains intercalated in an Mg-Al layered double hydroxide (LDH), Mg(1-x)Alx(OH)(2), with differing Al/Mg ratios has been investigated. The Mg-Al LDHs can be prepared over a range of compositions with x varying from 0.167 to 0.37 and therefore provides a simple system to study how the organization of the alkyl chains of the intercalated DDS anions change with packing density; the Al/Mg ratio or x providing a convenient handle to do so. Powder X-ray diffraction measurements showed that at high packing densities (x >= 0.3) the alkyl chains of the intercalated dodecyl sulfate ions are anchored on opposing LDH sheets and arranged as bilayers with an interlayer spacing of similar to 27 angstrom. At lower packing densities (x < 0.2) the surfactant chains form a monolayer with the alkyl chains oriented flat in the galleries with an interlayer spacing of similar to 8 angstrom. For the in between compositions, 0.2 <= x < 0.3, the material is biphasic. MD simulations were performed to understand how the anchoring density of the intercalated surfactant chains in the Mg-Al LDH-DDS affects the organization of the chains and the interlayer spacing. The simulations are able to reproduce the composition driven monolayer to bilayer transformation in the arrangement of the intercalated surfactant chains and in addition provide insights into the factors that decide the arrangement of the surfactant chains in the two situations. In the bilayer arrangement, it is the dispersive van der Waals interactions between chains in opposing layers of the anchored bilayer that is responsible for the cohesive energy of the solid whereas at lower packing densities, where a monolayer arrangement is favored, Coulomb interactions between the positively charged Mg-Al LDH sheets and the negatively charged headgroup of the DDS anion dominate.

New steroid-based chiral auxiliaries 6, 9, and 12 have been synthesized from readily available cholic acid. These new chiral auxiliaries place the reactive and the shielding sites in a 1,5 relationship to each other. Diels-Alder reaction of cyclopentadiene with corresponding acrylate esters (7, 10, and 13) have been examined. Acrylates 7 and 10 yielded cycloadducts with 29-88% diastereomeric excess with excellent endo selectivity in the presence of an excess of Lewis acids such as AlCl3, BF3.OEt(2), FeCl3, SnCl4, TiCl4, and ZnCl2. Treatment of acrylate 7 with cyclopentadiene in the presence of BF3.OEt(2) at -80 degrees C gave the endo adduct (>99%) with 88% de. Lewis acid catalyzed and uncatalyzed reactions of acrylates 7 and 10 with cyclopentadiene yielded cycloadducts with opposite stereochemistry. The chiral auxiliary was recovered in a nondestructive manner only via iodolactonization. Acrylate ester of alcohol 12 did not show any selectivity in either catalyzed and uncatalyzed reactions with cyclopentadiene. The presence of a flat aromatic surface at C-7 of the steroid was found to be essential to effect high diastereoselection.

A sample of 96 compact flat-spectrum extragalactic sources, spread evenly over all galactic latitudes, has been studied at 327 MHz for variability over a time interval of about 15 yr. The variability shows a dependence on galactic latitude being less both at low and high latitudes and peaking around absolute value of b approximately 15-degrees. The latitude dependence is surprisingly similar in both the galactic centre and anticentre directions. Assuming various single and multi-component distributions for the ionized, irregular interstellar plasma, we have tried to generate the observed dependence using a semi-qualitative treatment of refractive interstellar scintillations. We find that it is difficult to fit our data with any single or double component cylindrical distribution. Our data suggests that the observed variability could be influenced by the spiral structure of our Galaxy.

It is widely known that the compressed monolayers and bilayers of chiral lipids or fatty acids form helical morphologies, while the corresponding racemic modification gives only flat platelets without twist. No molecular explanation of this phenomenon is yet available, although subtle interactions at the chiral centers have often been proposed as the driving force behind the morphology of the aggregate to form a particular shape. In the present study, the morphologies of the chiral amphiphilic assemblies have been predicted on the basis of an effective pair potential between the molecules, which depends on the relative sizes of the groups attached to the chiral centers, the orientation of the amphiphilic molecules and also on the distance between them. It is shown that fur a pair of same kind of enantiomers, the minimum energy conformation favours a twist angle between them. This twist between the neighbouring molecules gives rise to the helicity of the aggregate. The present theory also shows from the molecular considerations that for a pair of mirror-image isomers (i.e. the racemic modification) the minimum energy conformation corresponds to the zero angle between the molecules, thus giving rise to flat platelets as observed in experiments. Another fascinating aspect of such chirality driven helical structures is that the sense (or the handedness) of the helix is highly specific about the chirality of the monomer concerned. The molecular theory shows, for the first time, that the sense of the helical structures in many cases is determined by the sizes of the groups attached to the chiral centers and the effective potential between them. The predicted senses of the helical structures are in complete agreement with the experimental results.

Six new vesicle-forming, cationic surfactant lipids are synthesized. Four of them contain 'flat' aromatic units at different locations of hydrophobic segments. In order to estimate the influence of aromatic units in the lipid monomer two other surfactant lipids of related structure with n-butyloxy units in the places of aromatic groups were also prepared. Transmission electron microscopy confirmed the vesicular membrane formation from these newly synthesized lipids. DSC or temperature-dependent keto-enol tautomerism of benzoylacetanilide-doped vesicles reveal a remarkable increase in the thermal stability of the membranes formed from aromatic surfactant lipids in contradistinction to their counterparts that contain n-butyloxy units. The enhanced thermal stability originates presumably as a consequence of inter-monomer stacking.

Analytical expressions which include depletion layer effects on low-injection carrier relaxation are being presented for the first time here. Starting from the continuity equation for the minority carriers, we derive expressions for the output signal pertinent to time-resolved microwave and luminescence experiments. These are valid for the time domain that usually overlaps with the time scales of surface processes, such as charge transfer and trapping. Apart from the usual pulse form of illumination, theoretical expressions pertaining to other forms of illumination such as switch-on and switch-off transient modes, a periodic mode, and a steady state and their various inter-relationships are derived here. The expressions obtained are seen to be generalizations of existing flat-band low-injection results in the Limit of early or initial band bendings. The importance of the depletion layer as an experimental parameter is clearly seen in the limit of larger band bendings wherein it is shown, unlike the flat-band case, to exhibit pure exponential forms of carrier relaxation. Our results are consistent with the main conclusions of the numerical and experimental work published recently. Furthermore, this work provides the actual functional relationships between the applied potential and observed carrier decay. This should enable one to extract the surface kinetic parameters, after deciding on the dominant mode of carrier relaxation at the interface, whether charge transfer or trapping, by studying the potential dependence of the fate of relaxation.
