A rapid and efficient method to identify the weak points of the complex chemical structure of low band gap (LBG) polymers, designed for efficient solar cells, when submitted to light exposure is reported. This tool combines Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) using the 'spin trapping method' coupled with density functional theory modelling (DFT). First, the nature of the short life-time radicals formed during the early-stages of photo-degradation processes are determined by a spin-trapping technique. Two kinds of short life-time radical (R and R′O) are formed after 'short-duration' illumination in an inert atmosphere and in ambient air, respectively. Second, simulation allows the identification of the chemical structures of these radicals revealing the most probable photochemical process, namely homolytical scission between the Si atom of the conjugated skeleton and its pendent side-chains. Finally, DFT calculations confirm the homolytical cleavage observed by EPR, as well as the presence of a group that is highly susceptible to photooxidative attack. Therefore, the synergetic coupling of a spin trapping method with DFT calculations is shown to be a rapid and efficient method for providing unprecedented information on photochemical mechanisms. This approach will allow the design of LBG polymers without the need to trial the material within actual solar cell devices, an often long and costly screening procedure.

This short review article explores the practical use of diamond-like carbon (DLC) produced by plasma enhanced chemical vapour deposition (PECVD). Using as an example issues relating to the DLC coating of a hand-held surgical device, we draw on previous works using atomic force microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, tensiometry and electron paramagnetic resonance. Utilising data from these techniques, we examine the surface structure, substrate-film interface and thin film microstructure, such as sp2/sp3 ratio (graphitic/diamond-like bonding ratio) and sp2 clustering. We explore the variations in parameters describing these characteristics, and relate these to the final device properties such as friction, wear resistance, and diffusion barrier integrity. The material and device characteristics are linked to the initial plasma and substrate conditions.

In a study of the vanadyl (VO2þ)-humic acids system, the residual vanadyl ion suppressed fluorescence and specific electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and NMR signals. In the case of NMR, the proton rotating frame relaxation times (T1qH) indicate that this suppression is due to an inefficient H-C cross polarization, which is a consequence of a shortening of T1qH. Principal components analysis (PCA) facilitated the isolation of the effect of the VO2þ ion and indicated that the organic free radical signal was due to at least two paramagnetic centres and that the VO2þ ion preferentially suppressed the species whose electronic density is delocalized over O atoms (greater g-factor). additionally, the newly obtained variables (principal components ? PC) indicated that, as the result of the more intense tillage a relative increase occurred in the accumulation of: (i) recalcitrant structures; (ii) lignin and long-chain alkyl structures; and (iii) organic free radicals with smaller g-factors.

Time-resolved resonance Raman spectroscopy (TR3) has been used to study the effect of solvent polarity on the mechanism and nature of intermediates formed in photoinduced electron-transfer reaction between triplet flouranil ((FL)-F-3) and tetramethylbenzene (TMB). Comparison of the TR3 spectra in polar, nonpolar, and medium polar media suggests that formation of radical anion due to electron-transfer reaction between (FL)-F-3 and TMB is favored in more polar solvents, whereas ketyl radical formation is more favored in less polar media. Compared to ketyl radical, the extent of radical anion formation is negligible in nonpolar solvents. Therefore, it is inferred that in nonpolar media ketyl radical is mainly generated by hydrogen-transfer reaction in the encounter complex between (FL)-F-3 and TMB. In solvents of medium polarity, the ion-pair decay leads to the formation of both ketyl radical and ketyl radical formed from the encounter between triplet state and the donor. Thus, competition between the formation of ketyl radical and ion pair is influenced by the solvent polarity. The nature of the ion pair in different solvent polarity has been investigated from the changes observed in the vibrational frequency of (fluoranil) FL part of the complex.

We perform Raman scattering experiments on natural graphite in magnetic fields up to 45 T, observing a series of peaks due to interband electronic excitations over a much broader magnetic field range than previously reported. We also explore electron-phonon coupling in graphite via magnetophonon resonances. The Raman G peak shifts and splits as a function of magnetic field, due to the magnetically tuned coupling of the E 2g optical phonons with the K- and H-point inter-Landau-level excitations. The analysis of the observed anticrossing behavior allows us to determine the electron-phonon coupling for both K- and H-point carriers. In the highest field range (>35 T) the G peak narrows due to suppression of electron-phonon interaction. © 2012 American Physical Society.

A generalized scattering matrix formalism is constructed to elucidate the interplay of electron resonance, coherence, dephasing, inelastic scattering, and heterogeneity, which play important roles in the physics of long-range electron transfer/transport. The theory consists of an extension of the standard Buttiker phase-breaking model and an analytical expression of the electron transmission coefficient for donor-bridge-acceptor systems with arbitrary length and sequence. The theory incorporates the following features: Dephasing-assisted off-resonance enhancement, inelasticity-induced turnover, resonance enhancement and its dephasing-induced suppression, dephasing-induced smooth superexchange-hopping transition, and heterogeneity effects. Procedures that allow the realization of resonance electron capture (REC) mode on a commercial triple-quadrupole mass spectrometer, after some simple modifications, are described, REC mass spectrometry (MS) and tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) experiments were performed and spectra for some compounds were recorded. In particular, the charge-remote fragmentation (CRF) spectra of [M - H](-) ions of docosanoic and docosenoic acids under low-energy collisionally activated dissociation (CAD) conditions were obtained, and showed that there were no significant differences for [M - H](-) ions produced at different resonances (i,e. for [M - H](-) ions with different structures). This observation was explained on the basis of results obtained from deuterium-labeled fatty acids, which showed that different CRF ions (but with the same m/z value in the absence of labels) could be produced by different mechanisms, and all of them were obviously realized under CAD conditions that made spectra practically indistinguishable. The other example, which compared the REC-MS/MS spectrum of [M - H](-) ions and EI-MS/MS spectrum of M+. ions of daidzein, demonstrated the potential of the REC-MS/MS technique for more complex structure elucidation. The reaction of [Cp*RhCl2](2) 1 with dilithium 1,2-dicarba-closo-dodecaborane(12)-1,2-dithiolate (a) and -diselenolate (b) afforded the 16-electron rhodium(III) half-sandwich complexes Cp*Rh[E2C2(B10H10)] [E=S (3a), Se (3b)]. The 18-electron trimethylphosphane rhodium(III) half-sandwiches Cp*Rh(PMe3)[E2C2(B10H10)] 4a-c were prepared from the reaction of Cp*RhCl2(PMe3) 2 with the same dichalcogenolates, including the ditelluride (c). The complexes 4a,b could also be obtained from the reaction of 3a,b with trimethylphosphane. The molecular geometry of 4b was determined by X-ray structural analysis. The 16-electron complexes 3 an monomeric in solution as shown by multinuclear magnetic resonance (H-1-, B-11-, C-13-, P-31- Se-77-, Rh-103-, Te-125-NMR). also in comparison with the data for the trimethylphosphane analogues 4a-c and for 6a in which the rhodium bears the eta(5)-1,3-C5H3 Bu-t(2) ligand. The Rh-103 nuclear shielding is reduced by 831 ppm (3a) and 1114 ppm (3b) with respect to the 18-electron complexes 4a,b. Similarly, the Se-77 nuclear shielding in 3b is reduced by 676.4 ppm with respect to that in 4b. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

In this conference we report cross sections for elastic collisions of low-energy electrons with the HCOOH…(H2O)n complexes, with n = 1, 2 and 3. The scattering cross sections were computed with the Schwinger multichannel method [K. Takatsuka and V. McKoy, Phys. Rev. A 24 , 2473 (1981); Phys. Rev. A 30 , 1734 (1984)] with pseudopotentials [M. H. F. Bettega, L. G. Ferreira, and M. A. P. Lima, Phys. Rev. A 47, 1111 (1993)] in the static-exchange and static-exchange plus polarization approximations, for energies from 0.5 eV to 6 eV. We considered some diÆerent hydrogen-bonded structures for the complexes that were generated with classical Monte Carlo simulations [K. Coutinho and S. Canuto, J. Chem. Phys. 113, 9132, (2000)]. The aim of this work is to investigate the effect of the surrounding water molecules on the π* shape resonance of the solute. Previous theoretical and experimental studies carried out in the gas phase reported a π* state for HCOOH at around 1.9 eV. For the n = 1 case and for all complexes, the stabilization of the resonance was observed (it appears at lower energy compared to the value obtained in the gas phase), as reported previously for the CH2O…H2O complexes [T. C. Freitas, M. A. P. Lima, S. Canuto, and M. H. F. Bettega, Phys. Rev. A 80, 062710 (2009)]. This result indicates that the presence of the solvent may affect the processes related to the π* state, such as the molecular dissociation by electron impact. For the n = 2 case we have observed both stabilization and destabilization of the π* resonance, that is associated with the hydrogen bond donor or acceptor role of the water molecules in the complexes. For the n = 3 case, preliminary static-exchange results show the stabilization of the π* state. We propose an explanation of the stabilization/destabilization of the π* state in terms of the polarization of the solute due to the surrounding water molecules and the net charge in the solute.
