In the developed world, grid-connected photovoltaics (PVs) are the fastest-growing segment of the energy market. From 1999 to 2009, this industry had a 42% compound annual growth-rate. From 2009 to 2013, it is expected to grow to 45%, and in 2013 the achievement of grid parity - when the cost of solar electricity becomes competitive with conventional retail (including taxes and charges) grid-supplied electricity - is expected in many places worldwide. Grid-connected PV is usually perceived as an energy technology for developed countries, whereas isolated, stand-alone PV is considered as more suited for applications in developing nations, where so many individuals still lack access to electricity. This rationale is based on the still high costs of PV when compared with conventional electricity. We make the case for grid-connected PV generation in Brazil, showing that with the declining costs of PV and the rising prices of conventional electricity, urban populations in Brazil will also enjoy grid parity in the present decade. We argue that governments in developing nations should act promptly and establish the mandates and necessary conditions for their energy industry to accumulate experience in grid-connected PV, and make the most of this benign technology in the near future. Objective. To standardize the design of individually fitted implants based on computed tomographic (CT) images for use in medialization laryngoplasty without intraoperative voice monitoring. Study Design. Prospective tomographic and anatomical experimental study of 10 human cadaveric larynges. Methods. CT scans of 10 excised human larynges were analyzed to define the shape and size of ideal implants for medialization laryngoplasty. Silicone implants were designed according to CT parameters and used in simulated laryngoplasties in the laryngeal specimens. The efficacy of each implant in providing adequate medialization of the vocal fold was evaluated. Results. Diverse shapes and sizes of implants were obtained, reflecting variations in laryngeal anatomy. The implants enabled regular medialization of the entire extent of the free border of the vocal fold, including its posterior aspect. Medialization was considered adequate in all cases. Conclusions. This method proved to be a simple and efficient way to design individualized implants for medialization laryngoplasty, regardless of the size and shape of the larynx.

In recent years the need for the design of more sustainable processes and the development of alternative reaction routes to reduce the environmental impact of the chemical industry has gained vital importance. Main objectives especially regard the use of renewable raw materials, the exploitation of alternative energy sources, the design of inherently safe processes and of integrated reaction/separation technologies (e.g. microreactors and membranes), the process intensification, the reduction of waste and the development of new catalytic pathways. The present PhD thesis reports results derived during a three years research period at the School of Chemical Sciences of Alma Mater Studiorum-University of Bologna, Dept. of Industrial Chemistry and Materials (now Dept. of Industrial Chemistry “Toso Montanari”), under the supervision of Prof. Fabrizio Cavani (Catalytic Processes Development Group). Three research projects in the field of heterogeneous acid catalysis focused on potential industrial applications were carried out. The main project, regarding the conversion of lignocellulosic materials to produce monosaccharides (important intermediates for production of biofuels and bioplatform molecules) was financed and carried out in collaboration with the Italian oil company eni S.p.A. (Istituto eni Donegani-Research Center for non-Conventional Energies, Novara, Italy) The second and third academic projects dealt with the development of green chemical processes for fine chemicals manufacturing. In particular, (a) the condensation reaction between acetone and ammonia to give triacetoneamine (TAA), and (b) the Friedel-Crafts acylation of phenol with benzoic acid were investigated.

The mobile app development field has become a very complex task due to the increase of mobile devices and the diversity of the market existing platforms. After identifying that the most used platforms by the users are iOS and Android, and observing the evolution of both from the point of view of the interaction design, the basis for an interaction design frame are established. The design presents the basic structure of a mobile application in both platforms, identifying the existing similarities and differences among them. Moreover, the elements present in the design of the interaction are analysed, in order to establish similarities and equivalences among those elements. In addition, a case study was carried out in which the design frame was applied in a real application. Finally, a web tool which allow users to access the proposed information was developed, in order to have an easier access to the information.

ABSTRACT Energy planning decision making is a complex task due to the multiple options to follow and objectives to meet. In order to minimize this complexity, a wide variety of methods and supporting tools have been designed. Over the last decade, rural energization has been a priority for many governments, aiming to alleviate rural to urban migration. Rural energy planning decision making must rely on financial, environmental and social costs. The purpose of this work is to define an original energy planning model named Clean and Native Energy Generation (Generación Energética Autóctona Y Limpia, GEAYL), and carry out a case study on Granma Province, Cuba. This model is based on two previous models: PAMER & SEMA. GEAYL is a multiobjective-multicriteria energy planning model, which includes five functions to be optimized: F1, to minimize financial costs; F2, to minimize CO2 emissions; F3, to minimize NOx emissions; F4, to minimize SOx emissions; and F5, to maximize energy Social Acceptability. The coefficients corresponding to the first four functions have been obtained through specialized papers and official data, and the ones belonging to F5 through an Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), built as per a statistical enquiry carried out on energy users and experts. F5 and the AHP application are considered to be the novelty of this model. In order to establish the optimal energy supply, several methods have been applied: weighted sum, weighted product, Manhattan distance L1, Euclidean distance L2 and L3. Several weight vectors have been applied to the mentioned distances in order to conclude the decision makers potential preference structure. Among the conclusions of this work, it must be noted that function F5, Social Acceptability, has a clear influence on every energy supply alternative.

ABSTRACT Academic formation of professional architects, under the scientific and disciplinary approaches, isolate from space and social reality, as a model of knowledge and formation, leads to the development of a contemporary praxis of consultation and collective creation, taken by the designers as a starting point for the formal exploration of concerted urban design projects and social research. This project of formative research involving civil and academic initiative is based on a diagnostic method and participative design for the evaluation and intervention of Pamplona‘s architectural and urban heritage, specifically applied to the design of public space, in its historical center, based in the relationship that is built between the architects in formation and the community.

Rising demand for food, fiber, and biofuels drives expanding irrigation withdrawals from surface water and groundwater. Irrigation efficiency and water savings have become watchwords in response to climate-induced hydrological variability, increasing freshwater demand for other uses including ecosystem water needs, and low economic productivity of irrigation compared to most other uses. We identify three classes of unintended consequences, presented here as paradoxes. Ever-tighter cycling of water has been shown to increase resource use, an example of the efficiency paradox. In the absence of effective policy to constrain irrigated-area expansion using "saved water", efficiency can aggravate scarcity, deteriorate resource quality, and impair river basin resilience through loss of flexibility and redundancy. Water scarcity and salinity effects in the lower reaches of basins (symptomatic of the scale paradox) may partly be offset over the short-term through groundwater pumping or increasing surface water storage capacity. However, declining ecological flows and increasing salinity have important implications for riparian and estuarine ecosystems and for non-irrigation human uses of water including urban supply and energy generation, examples of the sectoral paradox. This paper briefly considers three regional contexts with broadly similar climatic and water-resource conditions – central Chile, southwestern US, and south-central Spain – where irrigation efficiency directly influences basin resilience. The comparison leads to more generic insights on water policy in relation to irrigation efficiency and emerging or overdue needs for environmental protection.

The Queensland Environmental Protection Agency monitored water quality at 133 sites in North Queensland waterways between Cooktown and Bundaburg from 1992 to 2001. Condition of the waterways was rated by comparing recent data with the Queensland Water Quality Guidelines. Long-term trends were analysed using a censored regression technique that incorporates the effects of flow, temperature, seasonality and allows for long-term non-linear trends. Many sites were in good condition; those in poor condition were usually impacted by point source discharges; those in moderate condition were usually impacted by agricultural land use. There were no consistent long-term trends across the whole region. Recommendations for future programs include incorporating pressure indicators, ensuring high standards of quality assurance, including covariates such as rainfall in trend assessment and continuing programs over more than 10 years to allow detection of trends due to changes in land-use. A new approach is developed to analyze the thermodynamic properties of a sub-critical fluid adsorbed in a slit pore of activated carbon. The approach is based on a representation that an adsorbed fluid forms an ordered structure close to a smoothed solid surface. This ordered structure is modelled as a collection of parallel molecular layers. Such a structure allows us to express the Helmholtz free energy of a molecular layer as the sum of the intrinsic Helmholtz free energy specific to that layer and the potential energy of interaction of that layer with all other layers and the solid surface. The intrinsic Helmholtz free energy of a molecular layer is a function (at given temperature) of its two-dimensional density and it can be readily obtained from bulk-phase properties, while the interlayer potential energy interaction is determined by using the 10-4 Lennard-Jones potential. The positions of all layers close to the graphite surface or in a slit pore are considered to correspond to the minimum of the potential energy of the system. This model has led to accurate predictions of nitrogen and argon adsorption on carbon black at their normal boiling points. In the case of adsorption in slit pores, local isotherms are determined from the minimization of the grand potential. The model provides a reasonable description of the 0-1 monolayer transition, phase transition and packing effect. The adsorption of nitrogen at 77.35 K and argon at 87.29 K on activated carbons is analyzed to illustrate the potential of this theory, and the derived pore-size distribution is compared favourably with that obtained by the Density Functional Theory (DFT). The model is less time-consuming than methods such as the DFT and Monte-Carlo simulation, and most importantly it can be readily extended to the adsorption of mixtures and capillary condensation phenomena.
