Reversible work extraction from identical quantum systems via collective operations was shown to be possible even without producing entanglement among the sub-parts. Here, we show that implementing such global operations necessarily imply the creation of quantum correlations, as measured by quantum discord. We also reanalyze the conditions under which global transformations outperform local gates as far as maximal work extraction is considered by deriving a necessary and sufficient condition that is based on classical correlations.

Automatically determining and assigning shared and meaningful text labels to data extracted from an e-Commerce web page is a challenging problem. An e-Commerce web page can display a list of data records, each of which can contain a combination of data items (e.g. product name and price) and explicit labels, which describe some of these data items. Recent advances in extraction techniques have made it much easier to precisely extract individual data items and labels from a web page, however, there are two open problems: 1. assigning an explicit label to a data item, and 2. determining labels for the remaining data items. Furthermore, improvements in the availability and coverage of vocabularies, especially in the context of e-Commerce web sites, means that we now have access to a bank of relevant, meaningful and shared labels which can be assigned to extracted data items. However, there is a need for a technique which will take as input a set of extracted data items and assign automatically to them the most relevant and meaningful labels from a shared vocabulary. We observe that the Information Extraction (IE) community has developed a great number of techniques which solve problems similar to our own. In this work-in-progress paper we propose our intention to theoretically and experimentally evaluate different IE techniques to ascertain which is most suitable to solve this problem.

Accurate modelling of the internal climate of buildings is essential if Building Energy Management Systems (BEMS) are to efficiently maintain adequate thermal comfort. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models are usually utilised to predict internal climate. Nevertheless CFD models, although providing the necessary level of accuracy, are highly computationally expensive, and cannot practically be integrated in BEMS. This paper presents and describes validation of a CFD-ROM method for real-time simulations of building thermal performance. The CFD-ROM method involves the automatic extraction and solution of reduced order models (ROMs) from validated CFD simulations. ROMs are shown to be adequately accurate with a total error below 5% and to retain satisfactory representation of the phenomena modelled. Each ROM has a time to solution under 20seconds, which opens the potential of their integration with BEMS, giving real-time physics-based building energy modelling. A parameter study was conducted to investigate the applicability of the extracted ROM to initial boundary conditions different from those from which it was extracted. The results show that the ROMs retained satisfactory total errors when the initial conditions in the room were varied by ±5°C. This allows the production of a finite number of ROMs with the ability to rapidly model many possible scenarios.

Objective: This study aimed to compare two different tooth replacement strategies for partially dentate older patients namely; removable partial dentures (RPDs) and functionally orientated treatment based on the shortened dental arch (SDA) concept. Method: 88 partially dentate older patients (mean age 69.4 years) completed a randomised controlled clinical trial. 43 patients received RPDs and 45 received functionally orientated treatment where resin bonded bridgework was used to provide 10 pairs of occluding contacts. Patients were followed for 1 year after treatment intervention. The impact of treatment on oral health-related quality of life (OHrQOL) and cost effectiveness were used as outcome measures. Each patient completed the short form of the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) at baseline, 6 months and 1 year after treatment intervention. All costs involved in providing and maintaining each intervention were recorded including dental laboratory bills, materials and professional time. Result: Both the RPD (p=0.004) and the functionally orientated (p<0.001) treatment groups demonstrated statistically significant improvements in OHrQOL 1 year after treatment intervention. On average 9.4 visits were required to complete and maintain the RPDs over the 1 year period as compared to 5.3 visits for the functionally orientated group. The average laboratory cost for the RPDs was $537.45 per patient versus $367.89 for functionally orientated treatment. The cost of achieving the Minimally Important Difference of 5 scale points in OHIP-14 score with RPDs was $732.17. For the functionally orientated group the cost was $356.88. Therefore, functionally orientated treatment was more than twice as cost effective (1:2.05). Conclusion: For partially dentate older patients, functionally orientated treatment based on the SDA concept resulted in sustained, significant improvements in OHrQOL. Provision of functionally orientated treatment was also more than twice as cost effective compared to conventional treatment using RPDs.

Objectives: This study aimed to compare the cost effectiveness of conventional treatment using partial dentures with functionally-orientated treatment based on the shortened dental arch concept to replace missing teeth for partially dentate elders.
Methods: 44 partially dentate patients aged 65 years and older were recruited following routine dental assessment at a university dental hospital. Patients consented to and were randomly assigned to the two treatment arms. The conventional treatment group received a removable partial denture to replace all missing natural teeth. The functionally-orientated group were restored to a shortened dental arch of 10 occluding contacts using resin bonded bridgework. The costs associated with each treatment were recorded including laboratory charges, treatment time and opportunity costs. The impact on quality of life (OHRQoL) was measured using the 14-item Oral Health Impact Profile.
Results: Both groups reported improvements in OHRQoL after completion of treatment. For the conventional group, the mean OHIP-14 score decreased from 12.4 pre-operatively to 3.3 post-operatively (p<0.001). In the functionally-orientated group the OHIP-14 score decreased from 11.4 to 1.8 following treatment (p<0.001). On average the conventional treatment group required 8.3 clinic visits as compared to 4.4 visits for the functionally-orientated group. The mean total treatment time was 183 minutes 19 seconds for the conventional group versus 124 minutes 8 seconds for the functionally-orientated group. The conventional treatment group had an average of 6.33 teeth replaced at a laboratory cost of 337.31 Euros. The functionally-orientated group had an average of 2.64 teeth replaced at a laboratory cost of 244.05 Euros.
Conclusions: Restoration to a shortened dental arch using functionally-orientated treatment resulted in a similar improvement in OHRQoL with fewer clinic visits, less operative time and at a lower laboratory cost compared with conventional treatment.

Aims: Cataract surgery is one of the most common surgeries performed, but its overuse has been reported. The threshold for cataract surgery has become increasingly lenient; therefore, the selection process and surgical need has been questioned. The aim of this study was to evaluate the changes associated with cataract surgery in patient-reported vision-related quality of life (VR-QoL).

Methods: A prospective cohort study was conducted. Consecutive patients referred to cataract clinics in an NHS unit in Scotland were identified. Those listed for surgery were invited to complete a validated questionnaire (TyPE) to measure VR-QoL pre- and post-operatively. TyPE has five different domains (near vision, distance vision, daytime driving, night-time driving, and glare) and a global score of vision. The influence of pre-operative visual acuity (VA) levels, vision, and lens status of the fellow eye on changes in VR-QoL were explored.

Results: A total of 320 listed patients were approached, of whom 36 were excluded. Among the 284 enrolled patients, 229 (81%) returned the questionnaire after surgery. Results revealed that the mean overall vision improved, as reported by patients. Improvements were also seen in all sub-domains of the questionnaire.

Conclusion: The majority of patients appear to have improvement in patient-reported VR-QoL, including those with good pre-operative VA and previous surgery to the fellow eye. VA thresholds may not capture the effects of the quality of life on patients. This information can assist clinicians to make more informed decisions when debating over the benefits of listing a patient for cataract extraction.

Background: Northern Ireland has the worst oral health in the UK and its children have among the highest levels of tooth decay in Europe (DHSSPS, 2007).
Aim: The aim of this study is to investigate the factors influencing tooth brushing behaviour among Year 6 primary schoolchildren using the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB).
Method: Seven semi-structured focus groups involving 56 children were conducted during which children were asked questions about the factors that influence whether or not they brush their teeth. Thematic analysis was used with the purpose of eliciting the belief-based measures for all the TPB constructs.
Results: The findings suggest that children are knowledgeable about their teeth and are aware of the importance of maintaining good oral health; although a number of barriers to consistent tooth brushing exist.
Discussion: The findings will be used to inform stage 2 of the research project; questionnaire development to identify the factors influencing young people’s motivations to improve their tooth brushing behaviour and to assess their relative importance.

A number of tetraalkylammonium methylcarbonate and hydrogencarbonate based ionic liquids are shown to be capable of reacting with the naphthenic acids contained in Doba crude oil via a neutralisation reaction. Spectral studies show that the ionic liquids neutralisation mechanism involves the formation of an ionic liquid-naphthenate complex, liberating methanol and carbon dioxide. Extraction of the neutralised complex into a separate methanol phase and subsequent regeneration using aqueous carbonic acid results in ∼70% of the ionic liquid being recovered for recycle. Isolation of the naphthenic acids shows that these make up to 0.85 wt% of the crude oil. Speciation of the naphthenic acids shows a mixture of monocyclic, through to tetracyclic structures with carbon numbers in the range C12-C40.

Glibenclamide (GLIB), an oral antidiabetic medication of the sulphonylurea drugs family, was stoichiometrically imprinted using tetrabutylammonium methacrylate as the functional monomer, for the first time in molecular imprinting, and utilising the sulphonylurea affinity for carboxylate anions. Solution association between the drug and the novel functional monomer was studied by 1H-NMR titrations, whereby evidence of sulphonylurea deprotonation followed by the formation of “narcissistic” GLIB dimers was found when tested in CDCl3, while an affinity constant in excess of 105 L mol-1 was measured in DMSO-d6. Detailed analysis of GLIB binding on the subsequently prepared imprinted and non-imprinted polymers confirmed deactivation of binding sites by exchange of a proton between GLIB and methacrylate, followed by extraction of the tetrabutylammonium counterion from the polymer matrix, resulting in overall reduced binding capacities and affinities by the imprinted material under equilibrium conditions. An optimised MI-SPE protocol, which included a binding site re-activation step, was developed for the extraction of GLIB from blood serum, whereby recoveries of up to 92.4% were obtained with exceptional sample clean-up.

This paper uses the history of rubber extraction to explore competing attempts to control the forest environments of Assam and beyond in the second half of the nineteenth century. Forest communities faced rival efforts at environmental control from both European and Indian traders, as well as from various centres of authority within the Raj. Government attempts to regulate rubber collection were undermined by the weak authority of the Raj in these regions, leading to widespread smuggling. Partly in response to the disruptive influence of rubber traders on the frontier, the Raj began to restrict the presence of outsiders in tribal regions, which came to be understood as distinct areas outside British control. When rubber yields from the forests nearest the Brahmaputra fell in the wake of intensive exploitation, India's scientific foresters demanded and from 1870 obtained the ability to regulate the Assamese forests, blaming indigenous rubber tapping strategies for the declining yields and arguing that Indian rubber could be ‘equal [to] if not better' than Amazonian rubber if only tappers would change their practices. The knowledge of the scientific foresters was fundamentally flawed, however, and their efforts to establish a new type of tapping practice failed. By 1880, the government had largely abandoned attempts to regulate wild Indian rubber, though wild sources continued to dominate the supply of global rubber until after 1910.
