Global land cover maps play an important role in the understanding of the Earth's ecosystem dynamic. Several global land cover maps have been produced recently namely, Global Land Cover Share (GLC-Share) and GlobeLand30. These datasets are very useful sources of land cover information and potential users and producers are many times interested in comparing these datasets. However these global land cover maps are produced based on different techniques and using different classification schemes making their interoperability in a standardized way a challenge. The Environmental Information and Observation Network (EIONET) Action Group on Land Monitoring in Europe (EAGLE) concept was developed in order to translate the differences in the classification schemes into a standardized format which allows a comparison between class definitions. This is done by elaborating an EAGLE matrix for each classification scheme, where a bar code is assigned to each class definition that compose a certain land cover class. Ahlqvist (2005) developed an overlap metric to cope with semantic uncertainty of geographical concepts, providing this way a measure of how geographical concepts are more related to each other. In this paper, the comparison of global land cover datasets is done by translating each land cover legend into the EAGLE bar coding for the Land Cover Components of the EAGLE matrix. The bar coding values assigned to each class definition are transformed in a fuzzy function that is used to compute the overlap metric proposed by Ahlqvist (2005) and overlap matrices between land cover legends are elaborated. The overlap matrices allow the semantic comparison between the classification schemes of each global land cover map. The proposed methodology is tested on a case study where the overlap metric proposed by Ahlqvist (2005) is computed in the comparison of two global land cover maps for Continental Portugal. The study resulted with the overlap spatial distribution among the two global land cover maps, Globeland30 and GLC-Share. These results shows that Globeland30 product overlap with a degree of 77% with GLC-Share product in Continental Portugal.

Abstract: The use of organic compost from residues of production and slaughter of small ruminants can increase dry matter production of elephant grass, in due function of quantity nutrients in this compost, thus reducing the animal production impacts in the environment and production costs in elephant grass fields. Due to the Lack of information in literature and the importance regarding organic fertilization in agriculture, the aim of this work was evaluate chemical and physical soil attributes, nutritional status in plants and production of elephant grass in function of doses of organic compound of residues of production and slaughter of small ruminants. The experimental design was in split-plot, with the main treatment the doses (0; 13,3; 26,6; 39,9; 52,3; 79,8 t ha-1 ) of organic compost and one additional treatment with mineral fertilization and secondary treatments was the cycles (1, 2, 3 and 4) with 4 blocks, and 28 plots. The measured variables were physical and chemical attributes in the soil, nutritional diagnosis in plants and production of elephant grass. For cycle factor the organic fertilization increased gravimetric and volumetric humidity, yet, occurred decrease of density in function of cycles. With the doses of organic compost increased organic matter, ammonium, nitrate, ammonium + nitrate, phosphor and base saturation; and decreased the value of potential acidity; and increased content of N and P in plants. The doses of organic compost increased the elephant grass production. The mineral fertilization increased the elephant grass production in relation of organic fertilization over the cycles.

The purpose of this dissertation is to study literary representations of Eastern Europe in the works of celebrated and less-known American authors, who visited and narrated the region between the mid-1960s and early 2000s. The main critical body focuses on Eastern Europe before 1989 and encompasses three major voices of American literature: John Updike, Joyce Carol Oates, and Philip Roth. However, in the last chapter I also explore American literary perceptions of the area following the collapse of communism. Importantly, the term “Eastern Europe” as used in this dissertation is charged with significance. I approach it not only as a space on the map or the geopolitical construct which emerged in the aftermath of the Second World War, but rather as a conceptual category and a repository of meanings built out of fact and fantasy: specific historical, political and cultural realities interlaced with subjective worldviews, preconceptions, and mental images. The critical framework of this dissertation is twofold. I reach for the concept of liminality to elucidate the indeterminacy and malleability which lies at the heart of the object of study—the idea, image, and experience of Eastern Europe. Bearing in mind the nature of the works under analysis, all of which were inspired by actual visits behind the Iron Curtain, I propose to interpret these transatlantic literary journeys in terms of generative experience, where Eastern Europe is mapped as a liminal space of possibility; a contact zone between cultures and, potentially, the locus of self-discovery and individual transformation. If liminality is the metaphor or a lens that I employ in order to account for the nature of the analyzed works and the complex terrain they map, imagology, whose purpose is to study the processes of constructing selfhood and otherness in literature, provides me with the method and the critical vocabulary for analyzing selected literary representations. The dissertation is divided into six chapters, the last of which serves as coda to the previous discussion. The first two chapters constitute the critical foundation of this work. Then, in chapters 3, 4, and 5 I study American images of Eastern Europe in the works written by John Updike, Joyce Carol Oates, and Philip Roth, respectively. The last, sixth chapter of this dissertation is divided into two parts. In the first one, I discuss new critical perspectives and avenues of research in the study of Eastern Europe following the collapse of communism. Then, I carry out a joint analysis of four works written after 1989 by Eva Hoffman, Arthur Phillips, John Beckman, and Gary Shteyngart. The dissertation ends with conclusions in which I summarize my findings and reflections, and suggest implications for future research. As this dissertation seeks to demonstrate, Eastern Europe portrayed in the analyzed works oscillates between contradictory representations which are contingent upon a number of factors, most importantly who maps it and in what context. Even though each experience of Eastern Europe is distinct and fueled by the profiles, identities, and interests of the characters and their creators, I have found out that certain patterns of othering are present in all the works. Thus, my research seems to suggest that there is something of a recurrent literary image of Eastern Europe, which goes beyond the context of the Cold War. Accordingly, while this dissertation hopes to be a valid contribution to the study of literary and cultural mappings of Eastern Europe, it also generates new questions regarding the current, post-communist representation of the area and its relationship to the national tropes explored in my work.

Although natural gas has been praised as a clean and abundant energy source, the varying impacts and uncertainties surrounding the process of extracting natural gas from unconventional sources, known as horizontal high-volume hydraulic fracturing (HVHF) or “fracking,” have raised important concerns. The practice of HVHF is expanding so quickly that the full impacts are not yet known. This thesis project, using a grounded theory methodological approach, explores the risks and benefits associated with HVHF as recognized by the residents of two Michigan counties, one that currently produces natural gas by HVHF (Crawford County) and one that does not (Barry County). Through an analysis of media content related to HVHF in each case study site and interviews with stakeholders in both counties, this study examines perceptions of risks and benefits by comparing two communities that differ in their level of experience with HVHF operations, contributing to our understanding of how perceptions of risks and benefits are shaped by natural gas development. The comparative analysis of the case study counties revealed similarities and differences between the case study counties. Overall, Barry County residents identified fewer benefits and more risks, and had stronger negative perceptions than Crawford County residents. This study contributes to the social science literature by developing a richer theoretical frame for understanding perceptions of HVHF and also shares recommendations for industry, organizations, regulators, and government leaders interested in effectively communicating with community stakeholders about the benefits and risks of HVHF.

/ABSTRACT: Based on the Directive 2007/60/CE related to the Assessment and Management of Flood Risks, on the Decree-Law n. o 344/2007 which approves the Regulation for Dam Safety, the increased urban areas and to the projections of climate models by the end of the century which is pointing to an increased frequency and intensity of occurrence of floods caused by intense rainfall events of short duration, establishing rules of operation for flood control in reservoirs becomes crucial. The Magos Reservoir belongs to the river Tagus basin, located in the county of Salvaterra de Magos and has as its main uses the irrigation and flood control. This study aims to establish the rules of operation (flow discharged restriction) of the Reservoir of Magos for flood control in the downstream reach. The methodology used in the present work includes the application of the Hydrological model HEC-HMS 3.1.0, the Hydraulic model HEC-RAS 3.1.3 and a reservoir simulation model HEC-ResSim 3.0 to calculate the hydrograph of peak discharge, floodplain zone and simulate reservoir operations, respectively. As a result, the rules of operation (maximum flow and minimum discharge) of Magos Reservoir for flood control in a downstream reach in case of flood event are presented.

Levulinic acid (LA) is a polyfunctional molecule obtained from biomass. Because of its structure, the United States Department of energy classified LA as one of the top 12 building block chemicals. Typically, it is valorized through chemical reduction to γ-valerolactone (GVL). It is usually done with H2 in batch systems with high H2 pressures and noble metal catalysts, making it expensive and less applicable. Therefore, alternative approaches such as catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) through the Meerwein–Ponndorf–Verley (MPV) reaction over heterogeneous catalysts have been studied. This uses organic molecules (alcohols) which act as a hydride transfer agent (H-donor), to reduce molecules containing carbonyl groups. Given the stability of the intermediate, reports have shown the batch liquid-phase CTH of levulinate esters with secondary alcohols, and remarkable results (GVL yield) have been obtained over ZrO2, given the need of a Lewis acid (LASites) and base pair for CTH. However, there were no reports of the continuous gas-phase CTH of levulinate esters. Therefore, high surface area ZrO2 was tested for gas-phase CTH of methyl levulinate (ML) using ethanol, methanol and isopropanol as H-donors. Under optimized conditions with ethanol (250 ℃), the reaction is selective towards GVL (yield 70%). However, heavy carbonaceous materials over the catalyst surface progressively blocked LASites changing the chemoselectivity. The in situ regeneration of the catalyst permitted a partial recovery of the LASites and an almost total recovery of the initial catalytic behavior, proving the deactivation reversible. Tests with methanol were not promising (ML conversion 35%, GVL yield 4%). As expected, using isopropanol provided complete conversion and a GVL yield of 80%. The reaction was also tested using bioethanol derived from agricultural waste. In addition, a preliminary study was performed for the hydrogenolysis of polyols to produce bioethanol, were Pd-Fe catalyst promoted the ethanol selective (37%) hydrogenolysis of glycerol.

The research project is focused on the investigation of the polymorphism of crystalline molecular material for organic semiconductor applications under non-ambient conditions, and the solid-state characterization and crystal structure determination of the different polymorphic forms. In particular, this research project has tackled the investigation and characterization of the polymorphism of perylene diimides (PDIs) derivatives at high temperatures and pressures, in particular N,N’-dialkyl-3,4,9,10-perylendiimide (PDI-Cn, with n = 5, 6, 7, 8). These molecules are characterized by excellent chemical, thermal, and photostability, high electron affinity, strong absorption in the visible region, low LUMO energies, good air stability, and good charge transport properties, which can be tuned via functionalization; these features make them promising n-type organic semiconductor materials for several applications such as OFETs, OPV cells, laser dye, sensors, bioimaging, etc. The thermal characterization of PDI-Cn was carried out by a combination of differential scanning calorimetry, variable temperature X-ray diffraction, hot-stage microscopy, and in the case of PDI-C5 also variable temperature Raman spectroscopy. Whereas crystal structure determination was carried out by both Single Crystal and Powder X-ray diffraction. Moreover, high-pressure polymorphism via pressure-dependent UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy and high-pressure Single Crystal X-ray diffraction was carried out in this project. A data-driven approach based on a combination of self-organizing maps (SOM) and principal component analysis (PCA) is also reported was used to classify different π-stacking arrangements of PDI derivatives into families of similar crystal packing. Besides the main project, in the framework of structure-property analysis under non-ambient conditions, the structural investigation of the water loss in Pt- and Pd- based vapochromic potassium/lithium salts upon temperature, and the investigation of structure-mechanical property relationships in polymorphs of a thienopyrrolyldione endcapped oligothiophene (C4-NT3N) are reported.

The importance of Helicobacter pylori as a human pathogen is underlined by the plethora of diseases it is responsible for. The capacity of H. pylori to adapt to the restricted host-associated environment andto evade the host immune response largely depends on a streamlined signalling network. The peculiar H. pylori small genome size combined with its paucity of transcriptional regulators highlights the relevance of post-transcriptional regulatory mechanisms as small non-coding RNAs (sRNAs). However, among the 8 RNases represented in H. pylori genome, a regulator guiding sRNAs metabolism is still not well studied. We investigated for the first time the physiological role in H. pylori G27 strain of the RNase Y enzyme. In the first line of research we provide a comprehensive characterization of the RNase Y activity by analysing its genomic organization and the factors that orchestrate its expression. Then, based on bioinformatic prediction models, we depict the most relevant determinants of RNase Y function, demonstrating a correlation of both structure and domain organization with orthologues represented in Gram-positive bacteria. To unveil the post-transcriptional regulatory effect exerted by the RNase Y, we compared the transcriptome of an RNase Y knock-out mutant to the parental wild type strain by RNA-seq approach. In the second line of research we characterized the activity of this single strand specific endoribonuclease on cag-PAI non coding RNA 1 (CncR1) sRNA. We found that deletion or inactivation of RNase Y led to the accumulation of a 3’-extended CncR1 (CncR1-L) transcript over time. Moreover, beneath its increased half-life, CncR1-L resembled a CncR1 inactive phenotype. Finally, we focused on the characterization of the in vivo interactome of CncR1. We set up a preliminary MS2-affinity purification coupled with RNA-sequencing (MAPS) approach and we evaluated the enrichment of specific targets, demonstrating the suitability of the technique in the H. pylori G27 strain.

Rail transportation has significant importance in the future world. This importance is tightly bounded to accessible, sustainable, efficient and safe railway systems. Precise positioning in railway applications is essential for increasing railway traffic, train-track control, collision avoidance, train management and autonomous train driving. Hence, precise train positioning is a safety-critical application. Nowadays, positioning in railway applications highly depends on a cellular-based system called GSM-R, a railway-specific version of Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM). However, GSM-R is a relatively outdated technology and does not provide enough capacity and precision demanded by future railway networks. One option for positioning is mounting Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers on trains as a low-cost solution. Nevertheless, GNSS can not provide continuous service due to signal interruption by harsh environments, tunnels etc. Another option is exploiting cellular-based positioning methods. The most recent cellular technology, 5G, provides high network capacity, low latency, high accuracy and high availability suitable for train positioning. In this thesis, an approach to 5G-based positioning for railway systems is discussed and simulated. Observed Time Difference of Arrival (OTDOA) method and 5G Positioning Reference Signal (PRS) are used. Simulations run using MATLAB, based on existing code developed for 5G positioning by extending it for Non Line of Sight (NLOS) link detection and base station exclusion algorithms. Performance analysis for different configurations is completed. Results show that efficient NLOS detection improves positioning accuracy and implementing a base station exclusion algorithm helps for further increase.
