Sub-wavelength diameter holes in thin metal layers can exhibit remarkable optical features that make them highly suitable for (bio)sensing applications. Either as efficient light scattering centers for surface plasmon excitation or metal-clad optical waveguides, they are able to form strongly localized optical fields that can effectively interact with biomolecules and/or nanoparticles on the nanoscale. As the metal of choice, aluminum exhibits good optical and electrical properties, is easy to manufacture and process and, unlike gold and silver, its low cost makes it very promising for commercial applications. However, aluminum has been scarcely used for biosensing purposes due to corrosion and pitting issues. In this short review, we show our recent achievements on aluminum nanohole platforms for (bio)sensing. These include a method to circumvent aluminum degradation—which has been successfully applied to the demonstration of aluminum nanohole array (NHA) immunosensors based on both, glass and polycarbonate compact discs supports—the use of aluminum nanoholes operating as optical waveguides for synthesizing submicron-sized molecularly imprinted polymers by local photopolymerization, and a technique for fabricating transferable aluminum NHAs onto flexible pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes, which could facilitate the development of a wearable technology based on aluminum NHAs.

A compact electron cyclotron wave resonance (ECWR) source has been developed for the high rate deposition of hydrogenated tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C:H). The ECWR provides growth rates of up to 1.5 nm/s over a 4-inch diameter and an independent control of the deposition rate and ion energy. The ta-C:H was deposited using acetylene as the source gas and was characterized as having an sp3 content of up to 77%, plasmon energy of 27 eV, refractive index of 2.45, hydrogen content of about 30%, optical gap of up to 2.1 eV and RMS surface roughness of 0.04 nm. © 1999 Elsevier Science S.A. Over the past few decades, ferromagnetic spinwave resonance in magnetic thin films has been used as a tool for studying the properties of magnetic materials. A full understanding of the boundary conditions at the surface of the magnetic material is extremely important. Such an understanding has been the general objective of this thesis. The approach has been to investigate various hypotheses of the surface condition and to compare the results of these models with experimental data. The conclusion is that the boundary conditions are largely due to thin surface regions with magnetic properties different from the bulk. In the calculations these regions were usually approximated by uniform surface layers; the spins were otherwise unconstrained except by the same mechanisms that exist in the bulk (i.e., no special "pinning" at the surface atomic layer is assumed). The variation of the ferromagnetic spinwave resonance spectra in YIG films with frequency, temperature, annealing, and orientation of applied field provided an excellent experimental basis for the study.

This thesis can be divided into two parts. The first part is ferromagnetic resonance theory; the second part is the comparison of calculated with experimental data in YIG films. Both are essential in understanding the conclusion that surface regions with properties different from the bulk are responsible for the resonance phenomena associated with boundary conditions.

The theoretical calculations have been made by finding the wave vectors characteristic of the magnetic fields inside the magnetic medium, and then combining the fields associated with these wave vectors in superposition to match the specified boundary conditions. In addition to magnetic boundary conditions required for the surface layer model, two phenomenological magnetic boundary conditions are discussed in detail. The wave vectors are easily found by combining the Landau-Lifshitz equations with Maxwell's equations. Mode positions are most easily predicted from the magnetic wave vectors obtained by neglecting damping, conductivity, and the displacement current. For an insulator where the driving field is nearly uniform throughout the sample, these approximations permit a simple yet accurate calculation of the mode intensities. For metal films this calculation may be inaccurate but the mode positions are still accurately described. The techniques necessary for calculating the power absorbed by the film under a specific excitation including the effects of conductivity, displacement current and damping are also presented.

In the second part of the thesis the properties of magnetic garnet materials are summarized and the properties believed associated with the two surface regions of a YIG film are presented. Finally, the experimental data and calculated data for the surface layer model and other proposed models are compared. The conclusion of this study is that the remarkable variety of spinwave spectra that arises from various preparation techniques and subsequent treatments can be explained by surface regions with magnetic properties different from the bulk.

The electron transfer and structure of microperoxidase-11(MP-11) in solution and at electrode/solution interface were studied by electrochemical, resonance Raman and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopic techniques. Results show that the central iron in heme group was six-coordinated in solution, whereas it was converted to five-coordinated state as MP-11 was adsorbed on the surface of a roughened silver electrode, due to the reorientation of MP-11 molecules. The electrochemical properties of MP-11 were directly affected by the coordination state of heme iron.

Electrically detected magnetic resonance (EDMR) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) were used to investigate emeraldine base polyaniline films. The magnetic susceptibility presented a Curie (localized spins)-Pauli (delocalized spins) transition at 240 K, when we also observed a transition in the dependence of the g factor with temperature (T). Peak-to-peak linewidth decreases with increasing temperature, reflecting that motional narrowing limits the hyperfine and dipolar broadening in this polymer. EDMR spectra could only be observed above 250 K in accordance to EPR results. Surface and bulk transport could be separated and their analysis reflected the effect of magnetic interaction with oxygen. (c) 2007 American Institute of Physics.

We present a microwave switchable frequency selective surface with high quality factor transmission resonance. The high quality resonance is achieved by excitation of the trapped-mode in array with two concentric metal rings in a cell on a silicon substrate. Optical activation of the silicon substrate permits to switch off the transmission band.

This thesis focuses on the controlled assembly of monodisperse polymer colloids into ordered two-dimensional arrangements. These assemblies, commonly referred to as colloidal monolayers, are subsequently used as masks for the generation of arrays of complex metal nanostructures on solid substrates.rnThe motivation of the research presented here is twofold. First, monolayer crystallization methods were developed to simplify the assembly of colloids and to produce more complex arrangements of colloids in a precise way. Second, various approaches to colloidal lithography are designed with the aim to include novel features or functions to arrays of metal nanostructures.rnThe air/water interface was exploited for the crystallization of colloidal monolayer architectures as it combines a two-dimensional confinement with a high lateral mobility of the colloids that is beneficial for the creation of high long range order. A direct assembly of colloids is presented that provides a cheap, fast and conceptually simple methodology for the preparation of ordered colloidal monolayers. The produced two-dimensional crystals can be transformed into non-close-packed architectures by a plasma-induced size reduction step, thus providing valuable masks for more sophisticated lithographic processes. Finally, the controlled co-assembly of binary colloidal crystals with defined stoichiometries on a Langmuir trough is introduced and characterized with respect to accessible configurations and size ratios. rnSeveral approaches to lithography are presented that aim at introducing different features to colloidal lithography. First, using metal-complex containing latex particles, the synthesis of which is described as well, symmetric arrays of metal nanoparticles can be created by controlled combustion of the organic material of the colloids. The process does not feature an inherent limit in nanoparticle size and is able to produce complex materials as will be demonstrated for FePt alloy particles. Precise control over both size and spacing of the particle array is presented. rnSecond, two lithographic processes are introduced to create sophisticated nanoparticle dimer units consisting of two crescent shaped nanostructures in close proximity; essentially by using a single colloid as mask to generate two structures simultaneously. Strong coupling processes of the parental plasmon resonances of the two objects are observed that are accompanied by high near-field enhancements. A plasmon hybridization model is elaborated to explain all polarization dependent shifts of the resonance positions. Last, a technique to produce laterally patterned, ultra-flat substrates without surface topographies by embedding gold nanoparticles in a silicon dioxide matrix is applied to construct robust and re-usable sensing architectures and to introduce an approach for the nanoscale patterning of solid supported lipid bilayer membranes. rn

Objective: To introduce a new technique for co-registration of Magnetoencephalography (MEG) with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). We compare the accuracy of a new bite-bar with fixed fiducials to a previous technique whereby fiducial coils were attached proximal to landmarks on the skull. Methods: A bite-bar with fixed fiducial coils is used to determine the position of the head in the MEG co-ordinate system. Co-registration is performed by a surface-matching technique. The advantage of fixing the coils is that the co-ordinate system is not based upon arbitrary and operator dependent fiducial points that are attached to landmarks (e.g. nasion and the preauricular points), but rather on those that are permanently fixed in relation to the skull. Results: As a consequence of minimizing coil movement during digitization, errors in localization of the coils are significantly reduced, as shown by a randomization test. Displacement of the bite-bar caused by removal and repositioning between MEG recordings is minimal (∼0.5 mm), and dipole localization accuracy of a somatosensory mapping paradigm shows a repeatability of ∼5 mm. The overall accuracy of the new procedure is greatly improved compared to the previous technique. Conclusions: The test-retest reliability and accuracy of target localization with the new design is superior to techniques that incorporate anatomical-based fiducial points or coils placed on the circumference of the head. © 2003 International Federation of Clinical Neurophysiology.
