We have measured conductance histograms of atomic point contacts made from the noble-transition-metal alloys CuNi, AgPd, and AuPt for a concentration ratio of 1:1. For all alloys these histograms at low-bias voltage (below 300 mV) resemble those of the noble metals, whereas at high bias (above 300 mV) they resemble those of the transition metals. We interpret this effect as a change in the composition of the point contact with bias voltage. We discuss possible explanations in terms of electromigration and differential diffusion induced by current heating.

A tight-binding model is developed to describe the electron-phonon coupling in atomic wires under an applied voltage and to model, their inelastic current-voltage spectroscopy. Particular longitudinal phonons are found to have greatly enhanced coupling to the electronic states of the system. This leads to a large drop in differential conductance at threshold energies associated with these phonons. It is found that with increasing tension these energies decrease, while the size of the conductance drops increases, in agreement with experiment.

Synthesis of free standing conducting polypyrrole film using room temperature melt as the electrolyte is reported. We also report variation in the contribution of ionic conductance with temperature of the polymer film by four probe method and electrochemical properties like diffusion coefficient and ionic mobility of AlCl-4 doped polypyrrole film. An attempt has been made to arrive at the stability of charge carrier concentration over a temperature range of 295 to 350 K under vacuum. The film was characterized by optical techniques and scanning electron micrography.

Electrical transport and structural properties of platinum nanowires, deposited using the focussed ion beam method have been investigated. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy reveals metal-rich grains (atomic composition 31% Pt and 50% Ga) in a largely non-metallic matrix of C, O and Si. Resistivity measurements (15-300 K) reveal a negative temperature coefficient with the room-temperature resistivity 80-300 times higher than that of bulk Pt. Temperature dependent current-voltage characteristics exhibit non-linear behaviour in the entire range investigated. The conductance spectra indicate increasing non-linearity with decreasing temperature, reaching 4% at 15 K. The observed electrical behaviour is explained in terms of a model for inter-grain tunnelling in disordered media, a mechanism that is consistent with the strongly disordered nature of the nanowires observed in the structure and composition analysis.

The present paper proposes for the first time, a novel design methodology based on the optimization of source/drain extension (SDE) regions to significantly improve the trade-off between intrinsic voltage gain (A(vo)) and cut-off frequency (f(T)) in nanoscale double gate (DG) devices. Our results show that an optimally designed 25 nm gate length SDE region engineered DG MOSFET operating at drain current of 10 mu A/mu m, exhibits up to 65% improvement in intrinsic voltage gain and 85% in cut-off frequency over devices designed with abrupt SIDE regions. The influence of spacer width, lateral source/drain doping gradient and symmetric as well as asymmetrically designed SDE regions on key analog figures of merit (FOM) such as transconductance (g(m)), transconductance-to-current ratio (g(m)/I-ds), Early voltage (V-EA), output conductance (g(ds)) and gate capacitances are examined in detail. The present work provides new opportunities for realizing future low-voltage/low-power analog circuits with nanoscale SDE engineered DG MOSFETs. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Small rodents with a large surf ace-area-to-volume ratio and a high thermal conductance are likely to experience conditions where they have to expend large: amounts of energy in order to maintain a constant body temperature at low ambient temperatures. The survival of small rodents is thus dependent on their ability to reduce heat loss and increase heat production at low ambient temperatures. Two such animals are the social subterranean rodents Cryptomys damarensis (the Damaraland mole-rat) and Cryptomys hottentotus natalensis (the Natal mole-rat). This study examined the energy savings associated with huddling as a behavioural thermoregulatory mechanism to conserve energy in both these species. Individual oxygen consumption (VO2) was measured in groups ranging in size from one to 15 huddling animals for both species at ambient temperatures of 14, 18, 22, 26 and 30 degrees C. Savings in energy (VO2) were then compared between the two species. Significant differences in VO2 (p

Subterranean mammals (those that live and forage underground) inhabit a challenging microenvironment, with high levels of carbon dioxide and low levels of oxygen. Consequently, they have evolved specialised morphological and physiological adaptations. For small mammals that inhabit high altitudes, the effects of cold are compounded by low oxygen partial pressures. Hence, subterranean mammals living at high altitudes are faced with a uniquely demanding physiological environment, which presumably necessitates additional physiological adjustments. We examined the thermoregulatory capabilities of two populations of Lesotho mole-rat Cryptomys hottentotus mahali that inhabit a 'low' (1600 in) and a 'high' (3200 m) altitude. Mole-rats from the high altitude had a lower temperature of the lower critical point, a broader thermoneutral zone, a lower thermal conductance and greater regulatory non-shivering thermogenesis than animals from the lower altitude. However, minimum resting metabolic rate values were not significantly different between the populations and were low compared with allometric predictions. We suggest that thermoregulatory costs may in part be met by animals maintaining a low resting metabolic rate. High-altitude animals may adjust to their cooler, more oxygen-deficient environment by having an increased non-shivering thermogenesis whilst maintaining low thermal conductance. The ability of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to reinforce and enhance the electrical conductivity of polymer matrices is a function of both the aspect ratio and surface chemistry of the CNTs. Hitherto, due to the variability in MWCNT synthesis methods it has not been possible to study the effect of MWCNT aspect ratio and functionality on polymer composite properties. This paper was the first to report the correlation between MWCNT aspect ratio and functionality on the formation of electrical and rheological percolated networks. Furthermore, the fundamental ballistic conductance of MWCNTs made using arc discharge and chemical vapour deposition techniques was reported.

PURPOSE: The presence of novel KCNQ currents was investigated in guinea pig bladder interstitial cells of Cajal and their contribution to the maintenance of the resting membrane potential was assessed. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Enzymatically dispersed interstitial cells of Cajal were patch clamped with K(+) filled pipettes in voltage clamp and current clamp modes. Pharmacological modulators of KCNQ channels were tested on membrane currents and the resting membrane potential. RESULTS: Cells were stepped from -60 to 40 mV to evoke voltage dependent currents using a modified K(+) pipette solution containing ethylene glycol tetraacetic acid (5 mM) and adenosine triphosphate (3 mM) to eliminate large conductance Ca activated K channel and K(adenosine triphosphate) currents. Application of the KCNQ blockers XE991, linopirdine (Tocris Bioscience, Ellisville, Missouri) and chromanol 293B (Sigma) decreased the outward current in concentration dependent fashion. The current-voltage relationship of XE991 sensitive current revealed a voltage dependent, outwardly rectifying current that activated positive to -60 mV and showed little inactivation. The KCNQ openers flupirtine and meclofenamic acid (Sigma) increased outward currents across the voltage range. In current clamp mode XE991 or chromanol 293B decreased interstitial cell of Cajal resting membrane potential and elicited the firing of spontaneous transient depolarizations in otherwise quiescent cells. Flupirtine or meclofenamic acid hyperpolarized interstitial cells of Cajal and inhibited any spontaneous electrical activity. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides electrophysiological evidence that bladder interstitial cells of Cajal have KCNQ currents with a role in the regulation of interstitial cell of Cajal resting membrane potential and excitability. These novel findings provide key information on the ion channels present in bladder interstitial cells of Cajal and they may indicate relevant targets for the development of new therapies for bladder instability.

HL-1 is a line of immortalized cells of cardiomyocyte origin that are a useful complement to native cardiomyocytes in studies of cardiac gene regulation. Several types of ion channel have been identified in these cells, but not the physiologically important inward rectifier K(+) channels. Our aim was to identify and characterize inward rectifier K(+) channels in HL-1 cells. External Ba(2+) (100?µM) inhibited 44?±?0.05% (mean?±?s.e.m., n?=?11) of inward current in whole-cell patch-clamp recordings. The reversal potential of the Ba(2+)-sensitive current shifted with external [K(+)] as expected for K(+)-selective channels. The slope conductance of the inward Ba(2+)-sensitive current increased with external [K(+)]. The apparent Kd for Ba(2+) was voltage dependent, ranging from 15?µM at -150 ?mV to 148?µM at -75 ?mV in 120 ?mM external K(+). This current was insensitive to 10?µM glybenclamide. A component of whole-cell current was sensitive to 150?µM 4,4'-diisothiocyanatostilbene-2,2'-disulfonic acid (DIDS), although it did not correspond to the Ba(2+)-sensitive component. The effect of external 1 mM Cs(+) was similar to that of Ba(2+). Polymerase chain reaction using HL-1 cDNA as template and primers specific for the cardiac inward rectifier K(ir)2.1 produced a fragment of the expected size that was confirmed to be K(ir)2.1 by DNA sequencing. In conclusion, HL-1 cells express a current that is characteristic of cardiac inward rectifier K(+) channels, and express K(ir)2.1 mRNA. This cell line may have use as a system for studying inward rectifier gene regulation in a cardiomyocyte phenotype.

Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is the most common fatal inherited disease of Caucasians, affecting about 1 in 3000 births. Patients with CF have a recessive mutation in the gene encoding the CF transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR). CFTR is expressed in the epithelium of many organs throughout the exocrine system, however, inflammation and damage of the airways as a result of persistent progressive endobronchial infection is a central feature of CF. The inflammatory response to infection brings about a sustained recruitment of neutrophils to the site of infection. These neutrophils release various pro-inflammatory compounds including proteases, which when expressed at aberrant levels can overcome the endogenous antiprotease defence mechanisms of the lung. Unregulated, these proteases can exacerbate inflammation and result in the degradation of structural proteins and tissue damage leading to bronchiectasis and loss of respiratory function. Other host-derived and bacterial proteases may also contribute to the inflammation and lung destruction observed in the CF lung. Antiprotease strategies to dampen the excessive inflammatory response and concomitant damage to the airways remains an attractive therapeutic option for CF patients.

Studies of HeLa cells and serum- and glucocorticoid-regulated kinase 1 (SGK1) knockout mice identified threonine residues in the n-myc downstream-regulated gene 1 protein (NDRG1-Thr(346/356/366)) that are phosphorylated by SGK1 but not by related kinases (Murray et al., Biochem J 385:1-12, 2005). We have, therefore, monitored the phosphorylation of NDRG1-Thr(346/356/366) in order to explore the changes in SGK1 activity associated with the induction and regulation of the glucocorticoid-dependent Na+ conductance (G (Na)) in human airway epithelial cells. Transient expression of active (SGK1-S422D) and inactive (SGK1-K127A) SGK1 mutants confirmed that activating SGK1 stimulates NDRG1-Thr(346/356/366) phosphorylation. Although G (Na) is negligible in hormone-deprived cells, these cells displayed basal SGK1 activity that was sensitive to LY294002, an inhibitor of 3-phosphatidylinositol phosphate kinase (PI3K). Dexamethasone (0.2 mu M) acutely activated SGK1 and the peak of this response (2-3 h) coincided with the induction of G (Na), and both responses were PI3K-dependent. While these data suggest that SGK1 might mediate the rise in G (Na), transient expression of the inactive SGK1-K127A mutant did not affect the hormonal induction of G (Na) but did suppress the activation of SGK1. Dexamethasone-treated cells grown on permeable supports formed confluent epithelial sheets that generated short circuit current due to electrogenic Na+ absorption. Forskolin and insulin both stimulated this current and the response to insulin, but not forskolin, was LY294002-sensitive and associated with the activation of SGK1. While these data suggest that SGK1 is involved in the control of G (Na), its role may be minor, which could explain why sgk1 knockout has different effects upon different tissues.

The many-electron-correlated scattering (MECS) approach to quantum electronic transport was investigated in the linear-response regime [I. Bâldea and H. Köppel, Phys. Rev. B 78, 115315 (2008). The authors suggest, based on numerical calculations, that the manner in which the method imposes boundary conditions is unable to reproduce the well-known phenomena of conductance quantization. We introduce an analytical model and demonstrate that conductance quantization is correctly obtained using open system boundary conditions within the MECS approach.

The present paper demonstrates the suitability of artificial neural network (ANN) for modelling of a FinFET in nano-circuit simulation. The FinFET used in this work is designed using careful engineering of source-drain extension, which simultaneously improves maximum frequency of oscillation f(max) because of lower gate to drain capacitance, and intrinsic gain A(V0) = g(m)/g(ds), due to lower output conductance g(ds). The framework for the ANN-based FinFET model is a common source equivalent circuit, where the dependence of intrinsic capacitances, resistances and dc drain current I-d on drain-source V-ds and gate-source V-gs is derived by a simple two-layered neural network architecture. All extrinsic components of the FinFET model are treated as bias independent. The model was implemented in a circuit simulator and verified by its ability to generate accurate response to excitations not used during training. The model was used to design a low-noise amplifier. At low power (J(ds) similar to 10 mu A/mu m) improvement was observed in both third-order-intercept IIP3 (similar to 10 dBm) and intrinsic gain A(V0) (similar to 20 dB), compared to a comparable bulk MOSFET with similar effective channel length. This is attributed to higher ratio of first-order to third-order derivative of I-d with respect to gate voltage and lower g(ds), in FinFET compared to bulk MOSFET. Ionic conductivities of twelve protic ionic liquids (PILs) and their mixtures with water over the whole composition range are reported at 298.15 K and atmospheric pressure. The selected PILs are the pyrrolidinium-based PILs containing nitrate, acetate or formate anions; the formate-based PILs containing diisopropylethylammonium, amilaminium, quinolinium, lutidinium or collidinium cations; and the pyrrolidinium alkylcarboxylates, [Pyrr][CnH2n+1COO] with n = 5–8. This study was performed in order to investigate the influence of molecular structures of the ions on the ionic conductivities in aqueous solutions. The ionic conductivities of the aqueous solutions are 2–30 times higher than the conductivities of pure PILs. The maximum in conductivity varies from ww=0.41???to???0.74 and is related to the nature of cations and anions. The molar conductance and the molar conductance at infinite dilution for (PIL + water) solutions are then determined. Self-diffusion coefficients of the twelve protic ionic liquids in water at infinite dilution and at 298.15 K are calculated by using the Nernst–Haskell, the original and the modified Wilke–Chang equations. These calculations show that similar values are obtained using the modified Wilke–Chang and the Nernst–Haskell equations. Finally, the effective hydrodynamic (or Stokes) radius of the PILs was determined by using the Stokes–Einstein equation. A linear relationship was established in order to predict this radius as a function of the anion alkyl chain length in the case of the pyrrolidinium alkylcarboxylates PILs.
