Conjugated polymers and conjugated polymer blends have attracted great interest due to their potential applications in biosensors and organic electronics. The sub-100 nm morphology of these materials is known to heavily influence their electromechanical properties and the performance of devices they are part of. Electromechanical properties include charge injection, transport, recombination, and trapping, the phase behavior and the mechanical robustness of polymers and blends. Electrical scanning probe microscopy techniques are ideal tools to measure simultaneously electric (conductivity and surface potential) and dielectric (dielectric constant) properties, surface morphology, and mechanical properties of thin films of conjugated polymers and their blends.rnIn this thesis, I first present a combined topography, Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM), and scanning conductive torsion mode microscopy (SCTMM) study on a gold/polystyrene model system. This system is a mimic for conjugated polymer blends where conductive domains (gold nanoparticles) are embedded in a non-conductive matrix (polystyrene film), like for polypyrrole:polystyrene sulfonate (PPy:PSS), and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS). I controlled the nanoscale morphology of the model by varying the distribution of gold nanoparticles in the polystyrene films. I studied the influence of different morphologies on the surface potential measured by KPFM and on the conductivity measured by SCTMM. By the knowledge I gained from analyzing the data of the model system I was able to predict the nanostructure of a homemade PPy:PSS blend.rnThe morphologic, electric, and dielectric properties of water based conjugated polymer blends, e.g. PPy:PSS or PEDOT:PSS, are known to be influenced by their water content. These properties also influence the macroscopic performance when the polymer blends are employed in a device. In the second part I therefore present an in situ humidity-dependence study on PPy:PSS films spin-coated and drop-coated on hydrophobic highly ordered pyrolytic graphite substrates by KPFM. I additionally used a particular KPFM mode that detects the second harmonic electrostatic force. With this, I obtained images of dielectric constants of samples. Upon increasing relative humidity, the surface morphology and composition of the films changed. I also observed that relative humidity affected thermally unannealed and annealed PPy:PSS films differently. rnThe conductivity of a conjugated polymer may change once it is embedded in a non-conductive matrix, like for PPy embedded in PSS. To measure the conductivity of single conjugated polymer particles, in the third part, I present a direct method based on microscopic four-point probes. I started with metal core-shell and metal bulk particles as models, and measured their conductivities. The study could be extended to measure conductivity of single PPy particles (core-shell and bulk) with a diameter of a few micrometers.

A synthetic route was designed for the incorporation of inorganic materials within water-based miniemulsions with a complex and adjustable polymer composition. This involved co-homogenization of two inverse miniemulsions constituting precursors of the desired inorganic salt dispersed within a polymerizable continuous phase, followed by transfer to a direct miniemulsion via addition to an o/w surfactant solution with subsequent homogenization and radical polymerization. To our knowledge, this is the first work done where a polymerizable continuous phase has been used in an inverse (mini)emulsion formation followed by transfer to a direct miniemulsion, followed by polymerization, so that the result is a water-based dispersion. The versatility of the process was demonstrated by the synthesis of different inorganic pigments, but also the use of unconventional mixture of vinylic monomers and epoxy resin as the polymerizable phase (unconventional as a miniemulsion continuous phase but typical combination for coating applications). Zinc phosphate, calcium carbonate and barium sulfate were all successfully incorporated in the polymer-epoxy matrix. The choice of the system was based on a typical functional coatings system, but is not limited to. This system can be extended to incorporate various inorganic and further materials as long as the starting materials are water-soluble or hydrophilic. rnThe hybrid zinc phosphate – polymer water-based miniemulsion prepared by the above route was then applied to steel panels using autodeposition process. This is considered the first autodeposition coatings process to be carried out from a miniemulsion system containing zinc phosphate particles. Those steel panels were then tested for corrosion protection using salt spray tests. Those corrosion tests showed that the hybrid particles can protect substrate from corrosion and even improve corrosion protection, compared to a control sample where corrosion protection was performed at a separate step. Last but not least, it is suggested that corrosion protection mechanism is related to zinc phosphate mobility across the coatings film, which was proven using electron microscopy techniques.

Functional and smart materials have gained large scientific and practical interest in current research and development. The Heusler alloys form an important class of functional materials used in spintronics, thermoelectrics, and for shape memory alloy applications. An important aspect of functional materials is the adaptability of their physical properties. In this work functional polycrystalline bulk and epitaxial thin film Heusler alloys are characterized by means of spectroscopic investigation methods, X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX). With EDX the homogeneity of the samples is studied extensively. For some cases of quaternary compounds, for example Co2(MnxTi1−x)Sn and Co2(Mn0.5Dy0.5)Sn, an interesting phase separation in two nearly pure ternary Heusler phases occurs. For these samples the phase separation leads to an improvement of thermoelectric properties. XMCD as the main investigation method was used to study Co2TiZ (Z = Si, Sn, and Sb), Co2(MnxTi1−x)Si, Co2(MnxTi1−x)Ge, Co2Mn(Ga1−xGex), Co2FeAl, Mn2VAl, and Ni2MnGa Heusler compounds. The element-specific magnetic moments are calculated. Also, the spin-resolved unoccupied density of states is determined, for example giving hints for half-metallic ferromagnetism for some Co-based compounds. The systematic change of the magnetic moments and the shift of the Fermi energy is a proof that Heusler alloys are suitable for a controlled tailoring of physical properties. The comparison of the experimental results with theoretical predictions improves the understanding of complex materials needed to optimize functional Heusler alloys.

The purpose of this work is to introduce to the Italian audience one of the best known works written by the Russian novelist Aleksej Ivanov. The title of the book we refer to is Geograf glubus propil, [The geography drank his globe away]. The novel features peculiarities and themes that can be interesting also for non-Russian readers, being also an example of how Russian contemporary literature has evolved through the years. Nevertheless, it has already been translated in French and Serbian. In last years, the author has become increasingly famous in Russia: he has won many prices and has published a large number of books, many of which were awarded with different literature prizes. Moreover, a film based on the plot of the novel analyzed has been released in 2013, carrying the same name of the book. The film received positive feedback from both cinema critics and mass audience. The following work has been divided into two parts: an introductory part where the author and his book are presented, together with the main character and his peculiarities. It is then explained the context in which the book was created, the purpose of the author and how the book was perceived by readers. In addition to that, I listed some of the problems I had to face while translating , and the solutions I found in order to solve them. The second part is fully dedicated to the translation itself.

Benzodifuran-functionalised pyrene and anthracene fluorophores 1 and 2 were obtained in reasonable yields. Their single crystal structures, electrochemical, optical absorption, and fluorescence characteristics have been described. They show strong luminescence with high quantum yields of 0.53 for 1 and 0.48 for 2. Magnetic measurements for the 2D coordination polymer [Mn(Pht(Pyz(H2O)2]n (1), in which metal centres are linked together by pyrazine (Pyz) and 1,6-bridging o-phthalate ligand (Pht2-), revealed antiferromagnetic interactions between Mn(II) ions.

Adding conductive carbon fillers to insulating thermoplastic resins increases composite electrical and thermal conductivity. Often, as much of a single type of carbon filler is added to achieve the desired conductivity, while still allowing the material to be molded into a bipolar plate for a fuel cell. In this study, varying amounts of three different carbons (carbon black, synthetic graphite particles, and carbon fiber) were added to Vectra A950RX Liquid Crystal Polymer. The in-plane thermal conductivity of the resulting single filler composites were tested. The results showed that adding synthetic graphite particles caused the largest increase in the in-plane thermal conductivity of the composite. The composites were modeled using ellipsoidal inclusion problems to predict the effective in-plane thermal conductivities at varying volume fractions with only physical property data of constituents. The synthetic graphite and carbon black were modeled using the average field approximation with ellipsoidal inclusions and the model showed good agreement with the experimental data. The carbon fiber polymer composite was modeled using an assemblage of coated ellipsoids and the model showed good agreement with the experimental data.

In recent times, the demand for the storage of electrical energy has grown rapidly for both static applications and the portable electronics enforcing the substantial improvement in battery systems, and Li-ion batteries have been proven to have maximum energy storage density in all rechargeable batteries. However, major breakthroughs are required to consummate the requirement of higher energy density with lower cost to penetrate new markets. Graphite anode having limited capacity has become a bottle neck in the process of developing next generation batteries and can be replaced by higher capacity metals such as Silicon. In the present study we are focusing on the mechanical behavior of the Si-thin film anode under various operating conditions. A numerical model is developed to simulate the intercalation induced stress and the failure mechanism of the complex anode structure. Effect of the various physical phenomena such as diffusion induced stress, plasticity and the crack propagation are investigated to predict better performance parameters for improved design.

Nitric oxide has the potential to greatly improve intravascular measurements by locally inhibiting thrombus formation and dilating blood vessels. pH, the partial pressure of oxygen, and the partial pressure of carbon dioxide are three arterial blood parameters that are of interest to clinicians in the intensive care unit that can benefit from an intravascular sensor. This work explores fabrication of absorbance and fluorescence based pH sensing chemistry, the sensing chemistries' compatibility with nitric oxide, and a controllable nitric oxide releasing polymer. The pH sensing chemistries utilized various substrates, dyes, and methods of immobilization. Absorbance sensing chemistries used sol-gels, fumed silica particles, mesoporous silicon oxide, bromocresol purple, phenol red, bromocresol green, physical entrapment, molecular interactions, and covalent linking. Covalently linking the dyes to fumed silica particles and mesoporous silicon oxide eliminated leaching in the absorbance sensing chemistries. The structures of the absorbance dyes investigated were similar and bromocresol green in a sol-gel was tested for compatibility with nitric oxide. Nitric oxide did not interfere with the use of bromocresol green in a pH sensor. Investigated fluorescence sensing chemistries utilized silica optical fibers, poly(allylamine) hydrogel, SNARF-1, molecular interactions, and covalent linking. SNARF-1 covalently linked to a modified poly(allylamine) hydrogel was tested in the presence of nitric oxide and showed no interference from the nitric oxide. Nitric oxide release was controlled through the modulation of a light source that cleaved the bond between the nitric oxide and a sulfur atom in the donor. The nitric oxide donor in this work is S-nitroso-N-acetyl-D-penicillamine which was covalently linked to a silicone rubber made from polydimethylsiloxane. It is shown that the surface flux of nitric oxide released from the polymer films can be increased and decreased by increasing and decreasing the output power of the LED light source. In summary, an optical pH sensing chemistry was developed that eliminated the chronic problem of leaching of the indicator dye and showed no reactivity to nitric oxide released, thereby facilitating the development of a functional, reliable intravascular sensor.

The hydrogen ion activity (pH) is a very important parameter in environment monitoring, biomedical research and other applications. Optical pH sensors have several advantages over traditional potentiometric pH measurement, such as high sensitivity, no need of constant calibration, easy for miniaturization and possibility for remote sensing. Several pH indicators has been successfully immobilized in three different solid porous materials to use as pH sensing probes. The fluorescent pH indicator fluorescein-5-isothiocyanate (FITC) was covalently bound onto the internal surface of porous silica (pore size ~10 nm) and retained its pH sensitivity. The excited state pK* a of FITC in porous silica (5.58) was slightly smaller than in solution (5.68) due to the free silanol groups (Si-OH) on the silica surface. The pH sensitive range for this probe is pH 4.5 - 7.0 with an error less than 0.1 pH units. The probe response was reproducible and stable for at least four month, stored in DI water, but exhibit a long equilibrium of up to 100 minutes. Sol-gel based pH sensors were developed with immobilization of two fluorescent pH indicators fluorescein-5-(and-6)-sulfonic acid, trisodium salt (FS) and 8-hydroxypyrene- 1,3,6-trisulfonic acid (HPTS) through physical entrapment. Prior to immobilization, the indicators were ion-paired with a common surfactant hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) in order to prevent leaching. The sol-gel films were synthesized through the hydrolysis of two different precursors, ethyltriethoxysilane (ETEOS) and 3- glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS) and deposited on a quartz slide through spin coating. The pK a of the indicators immobilized in sol-gel films was much smaller than in solutions due to silanol groups on the inner surface of the sol-gel films and ammonium groups from the surrounding surfactants. Unlike in solution, the apparent pK a of the indicators in sol-gel films increased with increasing ionic strength. The equilibrium time for these sensors was within 5 minutes (with film thickness of ~470 nm). Polyethylene glycol (PEG) hydrogel was of interest for optical pH sensor development because it is highly proton permeable, transparent and easy to synthesize. pH indicators can be immobilized in hydrogel through physical entrapment and copolymerization. FS and HPTS ion-pairs were physically entrapped in hydrogel matrix synthesized via free radical initiation. For covalent immobilization, three indicators, 6,8-dihydroxypyrene-1,3- disulfonic acid (DHPDS), 2,7-dihydroxynaphthalene-3,6-disulfonic acid (DHNDS) and cresol red were first reacted with methacrylic anhydride (MA) to form methacryloylanalogs for copolymerization. These hydrogels were synthesized in aqueous solution with a redox initiation system. The thickness of the hydrogel film is controlled as ~ 0.5 cm and the porosity can be adjusted with the percentage of polyethylene glycol in the precursor solutions. The pK a of the indicators immobilized in the hydrogel both physically and covalently were higher than in solution due to the medium effect. The sensors are stable and reproducible with a short equilibrium time (less than 4 minutes). In addition, the color change of cresol red immobilized hydrogel is vivid from yellow (acidic condition) to purple (basic condition). Due to covalently binding, cresol red was not leaching out from the hydrogel, making it a good candidate of reusable "pH paper".

OBJECTIVES This study sought to report the final 5 years follow-up of the landmark LEADERS (Limus Eluted From A Durable Versus ERodable Stent Coating) trial. BACKGROUND The LEADERS trial is the first randomized study to evaluate biodegradable polymer-based drug-eluting stents (DES) against durable polymer DES. METHODS The LEADERS trial was a 10-center, assessor-blind, noninferiority, "all-comers" trial (N = 1,707). All patients were centrally randomized to treatment with either biodegradable polymer biolimus-eluting stents (BES) (n = 857) or durable polymer sirolimus-eluting stents (SES) (n = 850). The primary endpoint was a composite of cardiac death, myocardial infarction (MI), or clinically indicated target vessel revascularization within 9 months. Secondary endpoints included extending the primary endpoint to 5 years and stent thrombosis (ST) (Academic Research Consortium definition). Analysis was by intention to treat. RESULTS At 5 years, the BES was noninferior to SES for the primary endpoint (186 [22.3%] vs. 216 [26.1%], rate ratio [RR]: 0.83 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.68 to 1.02], p for noninferiority <0.0001, p for superiority = 0.069). The BES was associated with a significant reduction in the more comprehensive patient-orientated composite endpoint of all-cause death, any MI, and all-cause revascularization (297 [35.1%] vs. 339 [40.4%], RR: 0.84 [95% CI: 0.71 to 0.98], p for superiority = 0.023). A significant reduction in very late definite ST from 1 to 5 years was evident with the BES (n = 5 [0.7%] vs. n = 19 [2.5%], RR: 0.26 [95% CI: 0.10 to 0.68], p = 0.003), corresponding to a significant reduction in ST-associated clinical events (primary endpoint) over the same time period (n = 3 of 749 vs. n = 14 of 738, RR: 0.20 [95% CI: 0.06 to 0.71], p = 0.005). CONCLUSIONS The safety benefit of the biodegradable polymer BES, compared with the durable polymer SES, was related to a significant reduction in very late ST (>1 year) and associated composite clinical outcomes. (Limus Eluted From A Durable Versus ERodable Stent Coating [LEADERS] trial; NCT00389220).

We investigated the atomic surface properties of differently prepared silicon and germanium (100) surfaces during metal-organic vapour phase epitaxy/chemical vapour deposition (MOVPE/MOCVD), in particular the impact of the MOVPE ambient, and applied reflectance anisotropy/difference spectroscopy (RAS/RDS) in our MOVPE reactor to in-situ watch and control the preparation on the atomic length scale for subsequent III-V-nucleation. The technological interest in the predominant opto-electronic properties of III-V-compounds drives the research for their heteroepitaxial integration on more abundant and cheaper standard substrates such as Si(100) or Ge(100). In these cases, a general task must be accomplished successfully, i.e. the growth of polar materials on non-polar substrates and, beyond that, very specific variations such as the individual interface formation and the atomic step structure, have to be controlled. Above all, the method of choice to grow industrial relevant high-performance device structures is MOVPE, not normally compatible with surface and interface sensitive characterization tools, which are commonly based on ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) ambients. A dedicated sample transfer system from MOVPE environment to UHV enabled us to benchmark the optical in-situ spectra with results from various surfaces science instruments without considering disruptive contaminants. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) provided direct observation of different terminations such as arsenic and phosphorous and verified oxide removal under various specific process parameters. Absorption lines in Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectra were used to identify specific stretch modes of coupled hydrides and the polarization dependence of the anti-symmetric stretch modes distinguished different dimer orientations. Scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) studied the atomic arrangement of dimers and steps and tip-induced H-desorption proved the saturation of dangling bonds after preparati- n. In-situ RAS was employed to display details transiently such as the presence of H on the surface at lower temperatures (T <; 800°C) and the absence of Si-H bonds at elevated annealing temperature and also surface terminations. Ge buffer growth by the use of GeH4 enables the preparation of smooth surfaces and leads to a more pronounced amplitude of the features in the spectra which indicates improvements of the surface quality.
