Objective To investigate the effect of lipophilicity on the percutaneous penetration of a homologous series of alcohols through canine skin Design Skin harvested from Greyhound thorax was placed in Franz-type diffusion cells and the in vitro passage of radio-labelled (C-14) alcohols (ethanol, butanol, hexanol and octanol (Log P 0.19 - 3.0)) through separate skin sections was measured in replicates of five. Permeability coefficient (k(P), cm/h), maximum flux (J(max), mol/cm(2)/h) and residue remaining within the skin were determined. Results The k(P) increased with increasing lipophilicity (6.2 x 10(-4) +/- 1.6 x 10(-4) cm/h for ethanol to 1.8 x 10(-2) 3.6 x 10(-3) cm/h for octanol). Alcohol residues remaining within each skin sample followed a similar pattern. An exponential decrease in Jmax with increasing lipophilicity was observed. Conclusion Changes in canine skin permeability occur with increasing alcohol lipophilicity. This finding has practical consequences for the design of topical formulations and optimisation of drug delivery through animal skin.

Purpose: This study measured reliability between stroke patients' and significant others' scores on items on the Reintegration to Normal Living (RNL) Index and whether there were any scoring biases. Method The 11-item RNL Index was administered to 57 pairs of patients and significants six months after stroke rehabilitation. The index was scored using a 10-point visual analogue scale. Patient and significant other demographic information and data on patients' clinical, functional and cognitive status were collected. Reliability was measured using the intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) and percent agreement. Results: Overall poor reliability was found for the RNL Index total score (ICC=.36, 95% CI. 07 to .59) and the daily functioning subscale (ICC=.24, 95% CI -.003 to .46) and moderate reliability was found for the perception of self subscale (ICC=.55, 95 % CI .28 to .73). There was a moderate bias for patients to rate themselves as achieving better reintegration than was indicated by significant others, although no demographic or clinical factors were associated with this bias. Exact match agreement was best for the subjective items and worse for items reflecting mobility around the community and participation in a work activity. Conclusions: Caution is needed when interpreting patient information reported by significant others on the RNL Index. The use of a shorter scale to rate the RNL Index requires investigation.
Unexpected clobetasol propionate profile in human stratum corneum after topical application in vitro

Purpose. The validity of using drug amount-depth profiles in stratum corneum to predict uptake of clobetasol propionate into stratum corneum and its transport into deeper skin layers was investigated. Methods. In vitro diffusion experiments through human epidermis were carried out using Franz-type glass diffusion cells. A saturated solution of clobetasol propionate in 20% (V/V) aqueous propylene glycol was topically applied for 48 h. Steady state flux was calculated from the cumulative amount of drug permeated vs. time profile. Epidermal partitioning was conducted by applying a saturated drug solution to both sides of the epidermis and allowing time to equilibrate. The tape stripping technique was used to define drug concentration-depth profiles in stratum corneum for both the diffusion and equilibrium experiments. Results. The concentration-depth profile of clobetasol propionate in stratum corneum for the diffusion experiment is biphasic. A logarithmic decline of the drug concentration over the first four to five tape strips flattens to a relatively constant low concentration level in deeper layers. The drug concentration-depth profile for the equilibrium studies displays a similar shape. Conclusions. The shape of the concentration-depth profile of clobetasol propionate is mainly because of the variable partitioning coefficient in different stratum corneum layers.

Conventional methods to determine surface diffusion of adsorbed molecules are proven to be inadequate for strongly adsorbing vapors on activated carbon. Knudsen diffusion permeability (B-k) for strongly adsorbing vapors cannot be directly estimated from that of inert gases such as helium. In this paper three models are considered to elucidate the mechanism of surface diffusion in activated carbon. The transport mechanism in all three models is a combination of Knudsen diffusion, viscous flow and surface diffusion. The collision reflection factor f (which is the fraction of molecules undergoing collision to the solid surface over reflection from the surface) of the Knudsen diffusivity is assumed to be a function of loading. It was found to be 1.79 in the limit of zero loading, and decreases as loading increases. The surface diffusion permeability increases sharply at very low pressures and then starts to decrease after it has reached a maximum (B(mum)s) at a threshold pressure. The initial rapid increase in the total permeability is mainly attributed to surface diffusion. Interestingly the B(mum)s for all adsorbates appear at the same volumetric adsorbed phase concentration, suggesting that the volume of adsorbed molecules may play an important role in the surface diffusion mechanism in activated carbon. We present a theory for the transport of molecules adsorbed in slit and cylindrical nanopores at low density, considering the axial momentum gain of molecules oscillating between diffuse wall reflections. Good agreement with molecular dynamics simulations is obtained over a wide range of pore sizes, including the regime of single-file diffusion where fluid-fluid interactions are shown to have a negligible effect on the collective transport coefficient. We show that dispersive fluid-wall interactions considerably attenuate transport compared to classical hard sphere theory.

Simulation of the transport of methane in cylindrical silica mesopores have been performed using equilibrium and nonequilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) as well as dual control volume grand canonical molecular dynamics methods. It is demonstrated that all three techniques yield the same transport coefficient even in the presence of viscous flow. A modified locally averaged density model for viscous flow, combined with consideration of wall slip through a frictional condition, gives a convincing interpretation of the variation of the transport coefficient over a wide range of densities, and for various pore sizes and temperatures. Wall friction coefficients extracted from NEMD simulations are found to be consistent with momentum transfer arguments, and the approach is shown to be more meaningful than the classical slip length concept. Em geral, produtos agrícolas são produzidos em larga escala e essa produtividade cresce proporcionalmente ao seu consumo. Entretanto, outro fator também cresce de forma proporcional, as perdas pós-colheita, o que sugere a utilização de tecnologias para aumentar a utilização desses produtos mitigando o desperdício e aumentando sua a vida de prateleira. Além disso, oferecer o produto durante o período de entressafra. No presente trabalho, foi utilizado à tecnologia de secagem em leito de espuma aplicada a cenoura, beterraba, tomate e morango, produtos amplamente produzidos e consumidos no Brasil. Neste trabalho, os quatros produtos foram submetidos à secagem em leito de espuma em secador com ar circulado em temperaturas controladas de 40, 50, 60, 70 e 80 °C. A descrição da cinética de secagem foi realizada pelo ajuste de modelos matemáticos para cada temperatura do ar de secagem. Além disso, foi proposto um modelo matemático generalizado ajustado por regressão não linear. O modelo de Page obteve o melhor ajuste sobre os dados de secagem em todos os produtos testados, com um coeficiente de determinação (R²) superior a 98% em todas as temperaturas avaliadas. Além disso, foi possível modelar a influência da temperatura do ar sobre o parâmetro k do modelo de Page através da utilização de um modelo exponencial. O coeficiente de difusão efetiva aumentou com a elevação da temperatura, apresentando valores entre 10-8e 10-7 m².s-¹ para as temperaturas de processo. A relação entre o coeficiente de difusão efetiva e a temperatura de secagem pôde ser descrita pela equação de Arrhenius.

In cameras with radial distortion, straight lines in space are in general mapped to curves in the image. Although epipolar geometry also gets distorted, there is a set of special epipolar lines that remain straight, namely those that go through the distortion center. By finding these straight epipolar lines in camera pairs we can obtain constraints on the distortion center(s) without any calibration object or plumbline assumptions in the scene. Although this holds for all radial distortion models we conceptually prove this idea using the division distortion model and the radial fundamental matrix which allow for a very simple closed form solution of the distortion center from two views (same distortion) or three views (different distortions). The non-iterative nature of our approach makes it immune to local minima and allows finding the distortion center also for cropped images or those where no good prior exists. Besides this, we give comprehensive relations between different undistortion models and discuss advantages and drawbacks.

The objective of the present work was to evaluate 27 progenies of cocoa crosses considering the agronomic traits and select F1 plants within superior crosses. The experiment was installed in March 2005, in the Experimental Station Joaquim Bahiana (ESJOB), in Itajuipe, Bahia. The area of the experiment is of approximately 3 ha, with a total of 3240 plants. Thirteen evaluations of vegetative brooms, five of cushion brooms and 15 of number of pods per plant were accomplished. Thirty pollinations were made for each selected plant to test for self-compatibility. The production, based on the number of pods per plant, and resistance to witches´ broom indicated CEPEC 94 x CCN 10, RB 39 x CCN 51 and CCN 10 x VB 1151 as superior progenies. All selections tested were self-compatible. The analyses of progenies and individual tree data, associated to visual field observations, allowed the selection of 17 plants which were included in a network of regional tests to determine the phenotypic stability.

ABSTRACT The objective of this work was to study the distribution of values of the coefficient of variation (CV) in the experiments of papaya crop (Carica papaya L.) by proposing ranges to guide researchers in their evaluation for different characters in the field. The data used in this study were obtained by bibliographical review in Brazilian journals, dissertations and thesis. This study considered the following characters: diameter of the stalk, insertion height of the first fruit, plant height, number of fruits per plant, fruit biomass, fruit length, equatorial diameter of the fruit, pulp thickness, fruit firmness, soluble solids and internal cavity diameter, from which, value ranges were obtained for the CV values for each character, based on the methodology proposed by Garcia, Costa and by the standard classification of Pimentel-Gomes. The results obtained in this study indicated that ranges of CV values were different among various characters, presenting a large variation, which justifies the necessity of using specific evaluation range for each character. In addition, the use of classification ranges obtained from methodology of Costa is recommended.

Improving the treatment of obesity remains a critical challenge. Several health behaviour change models, often based on a social-cognitive framework, have been used to design weight management interventions (Baranowski et al., 2003). However, most interventions have only produced modest weight reductions (Wadden et al., 2002) and socialcognitive variables have shown limited power to predict weight outcomes (Palmeira et al., 2007). Other predictors, and possibl alte nati e e planatory models, are needed to better understand the mechanisms by which weight loss and other obesity treatment-outcomes are brought about (Baranowski, 2006). Self-esteem is one of these possible mechanisms, because is commonly reported to change during the treatment, although these changes are not necessarily associated with weight loss (Blaine et al., 2007; Maciejewski et al., 2005). This possibility should be more evident if the program integrates regular exercise, as it promotes improvements in subjective well-being (Biddle & Mutrie, 2001), with possible influences on long-term behavioral adherence (e.g. diet, exercise). Following the reciprocal effects model tenets (Marsh & Craven, 2006), we expect that the influences between changes in weight, selfesteem and exercise to be reciprocal and might present one of the mechanisms by which obesity treatments can be improved.
