Blue-green and red photoluminescence (PL) emission in structurally disordered CaTiO3:Sm (CT:Sm) powders was observed at room temperature with laser excitation at 350.7 nm. The perovskite-like titanate CT:Sm powders prepared by a soft chemical processing at different temperatures of annealing were structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES). The results indicate that the generation of the broad PL band is related to order-disorder degree in the perovskitelike structure. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Samarium doped PbTiO3 (PT:Sm) and pure PbTiO3 (PT) powders were obtained by polymeric precursor method. These powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and theoretical calculations using the CRYSTAL98 program. The effect of the samarium atom is taken into account only indirectly. The experimental models were compared with the cubic (ideal) and tetragonal theoretical models. The structure deformations existent in the experimental compounds were analyzed from the tiny structural differences that lead to perturbations in the crystal orbital splittings. This paper proposes an efficient alternative methodology for defining structural distortions. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Barium titanate thin films were prepared by the polymeric precursor method and deposited onto Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and micro-Raman spectroscopy were used to investigate the formation of the BaTiO3 perovskite phase. Afterwards, the films were submitted to post-annealing treatments in oxygen and nitrogen atmospheres at 300 degreesC for 2 h, and had their dielectric properties measured. It was observed that the electric properties of the thin films are very sensitive to the nature of the post-annealing atmosphere. This study demonstrates that post-annealing in an oxygen atmosphere increases the dielectric relaxation phenomenon and that post-annealing in a nitrogen atmosphere produces a slight dielectric relaxation. Ferroelectric PbTiO3 thin films were successfully prepared on a Pt(111)Ti/SiO2/Si(100) substrate for the first time by spin coating, using the polymeric precursor method. X-ray diffraction patterns of the films indicate that they are polycrystalline in nature. This method allows low temperature (500 degrees C) synthesis and high electrical properties. The multilayer PbTiO3 thin films were granular in structure with a grain size of approximately 110-120 nm. A 380-nm-thick film was obtained by carrying out four cycles of the spin-coating/heating process. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) analyses showed the surface of these thin films to be smooth, dense and crack-free with low surface roughness (=3.4 nm). At room temperature and at a frequency of 100 kHz, the dielectric constant and the dissipation factor were, respectively, 570 and 0.016. The C-V characteristics of perovskite thin film prepared at low temperature show normal ferrolectric behavior. The remanent polarization and coercive field for the films deposited were 13.62 mu C/cm(2) and 121.43 kV/cm, respectively. The high electrical property values are attributed to the excellent microstrutural quality and chemical homogeneity of thin films obtained by the polymeric precursor method. (C) 2000 Elsevier B.V. Calcium copper titanate (CaCu3Ti4O12) ceramic varistors were prepared by solid-state method. The samples were several times heat treated in vacuum and the evolution of electrical characteristics were monitored by current density versus electric field measurements and impedance spectroscopy. Repeated heat treatments in vacuum (900 degrees C for 1 h, 0.01 Torr) lead to a desorption of oxygen adsorbed at the grain boundaries and consequently to a degradation of the varistor properties. During further successive heat treatments some oxygen from the grain interior moves to the grain boundary thereby partially restoring the varistor properties. Gaussian basis sets (24s14p, 30s19p14d, and 33s21p14d for O (P-3), Ti (S-5), and Ba (S-1) atoms, respectively), are designed with the strategy of the Generator Coordinate Hartree-Fock method. The basis sets are then contracted to [6s4p], [10s5p4d], and [16s9p5d] to O, Ti, and Ba atoms, respectively, and used in calculations of total and orbital energies of (TiO+2)-Ti-1 and (BaO)-Ba-1 fragments for quality evaluation in molecular studies. For O atom, the [6s4p] basis set is enriched with d polarization function and used along with the [10s5p4d] and [16s9p5d] basis sets for the theoretical study of the piezoelectric effect of perovskite (BaTiO3). The results of this work evidence that the piezoelectric properties in BaTiO3 can be caused by electrostatic interactions. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This work presents the preparation of SrBi2Nb2O9 (SBN) directly by the combustion synthesis. Strontium nitrate, niobium ammonium oxalate (NH4H2[NbO-(C2O4)(3)].3H(2)O) and bismuth oxide were used as oxidant reactants and urea as fuel. The influence of the fuel was evaluated by the addition of different fuel amounts (50%, 100%, 200% and 300%), 100% being the stoichiometric proportion. The XRD patterns showed that the SBN perovskite crystallized as the majority phase. The as-synthesized stoichiometric powder presented a specific surface area of around 13 m(2)/g and a mean grain size of around 16 nm. Dilatometric measurements showed that the maximum sintering rate occurs at 1275degreesC. The determination of the ferroparaelectric transition showed a Curie temperature (T-c) of 429degreesC. Stoichiometric CaWO4 and SrWO4 thin films were synthesized using a chemical solution processing, the so-called polymeric precursor method. In this soft chemical method, soluble precursors such as strontium carbonate, calcium carbonate and tungstic acid, as starting materials, were mixed in an aqueous solution. The thin films were deposited on glass substrates by means of the spinning technique. The surface morphology and crystal structure of the thin films were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Nucleation stages and surface morphology evolution of the thin films on glass substrates were studied by atomic force microscopy. The films nucleate at 300 degreesC, after the coalescence of small nuclei into larger grains yielding a homogeneous dense surface. XRD characterization of these films showed that the CaWO4 and SrWO4 phases crystallize at 400 degreesC from an inorganic amorphous phase. No intermediate crystalline phase was identified. The optical properties were also studied. It was found that CaWO4 and SrWO4 thin films have an optical band gap, E-gap=5.27 and 5.78 eV, respectively, of a direct transition nature. The excellent microstructural quality and chemical homogeneity confirmed that this soft solution processing provides an inexpensive and environmentally friendly route for the preparation of CaWO4 and SrWO4 thin films. Calcium modified lead titanate sol was synthesized using a soft solution processing, the so-called polymeric precursor method. In soft chemistry method, soluble precursors such as lead acetate trihydrate, calcium carbonate and titanium isopropoxide, as starting materials, were mixed in aqueous solution. Pb0.7Ca0.3TiO3 thin films were deposited on platinum-coated silicon and quartz substrates by means of the spinning technique. The surface morphology and crystal structure, dielectric and optical properties of the thin films were investigated. The electrical measurements were conducted on metal-ferroelectric-metal (MFM) capacitors. The typical measured small signal dielectric constant and dissipation factor at a frequency of 100 kHz were 299 and 0.065, respectively, for a thin film with 230 nm thickness annealed at 600degreesC for 2 h. The remanent polarization (2P(r)) and coercive field (E-c) were 32 muC/cm(2) and 100 kV/cm, respectively. Transmission spectra were recorded and from them, refractive index, extinction coefficient, and band gap energy were calculated. Thin films exhibited good optical transmissivity, and had optical direct transitions. The present study confirms the validity of the DiDomenico model for the interband transition, with a single electronic oscillator at 6.858 eV. The optical dispersion behavior of PCT thin film was found to fit well the Sellmeir dispersion equation. The band gap energy of the thin film, annealed at 600degreesC, was 3.56 eV. The results confirmed that soft solution processing provides an inexpensive and environmentally friendly route for the preparation of PCT thin films.

Strontium bismuth tantalate thin films were prepared on several substrates (platinized silicon (PvTi/SiO2/Si), n-type (100)-oriented and p-type (111)-oriented silicon wafers, and fused silica) by the solution deposition method. The resin was obtained by the polymeric precursor method, based on the Pechini process, using strontium carbonate, bismuth oxide, and tantalum ethoxide as starting reagents. Characterizations by XRD and SEM were performed for structural and microstructural evaluations. The electrical measurements, carried on the MFM configuration, showed P-r values of 6.24 muC/cm(2) and 31.5 kV/cm for the film annealed at 800 degreesC. The film deposited onto fused silica and treated at 700 degreesC presented around 80 % of transmittance.
