Recent studies have shown the existence of two important inhibitory mechanisms for the control of NaCl and water intake: one mechanism involves serotonin in the lateral parabrachial nucleus (LPBN) and the other depends on alpha(2)-adrenergic/imidazoline receptors probably in the forebrain areas. In the present study we investigated if alpha(2)-adrenergic/imidazoline and serotonergic inhibitory mechanisms interact to control NaCl and water intake. Male Holtzman rats with cannulas implanted simultaneously into the lateral ventricle (LV) and bilaterally into the LPBN were used. The ingestion of 0.3 M NaCl and water was induced by treatment with the diuretic furosemide (10 mg/kg of body weight)+the angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor captopril (5 mg/kg) injected subcutaneously 1 h before the access of rats to water and 0.3 M NaCl. Intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) injection of the alpha(1)-adrenergic/imidazoline agonist clonidine (20 nmol/l RI) almost abolished water (1.6 +/- 1.2, vs. vehicle: 7.5 +/- 2.2 ml/2 h) and 0.3 M NaCl intake (0.5 +/- 0.3, vs. vehicle: 2.2 0.8 ml/2 h). Similar effects were produced by bilateral injections of the 5HT(2a/2b) serotonergic agonist 2,5-dimetoxy-4-iodoamphetamine (DOI, 5 mug/0.2 mul each site) into the LPBN on water (3.6 +/- 0.9 ml/2 h) and 0.3 M NaCl intake (0.4 +/- 0.2 m1/2 h). Injection of the (alpha(2)-adrenergic/imidazoline antagonist idazoxan (320 nmol) i.c.v. completely blocked the effects of clonidine on water (8.4 +/- 1.5 ml/2 h) and NaCl intake (4.0 +/- 1.2 ml/2 h), but did not change the effects of LPBN injections of DOI on water (4.2 +/- 1.0 ml/2 h) and NaCl intake (0.7 +/- 0.2 ml/2 h). Bilateral injections of methysergide (4 mug/0.2 mul each site) into the LPBN increased 0.3 M NaCl intake (6.4 +/- 1.9 ml/2 h), not water intake. The inhibitory effect of i.c.v. clonidine on water and 0.3 M NaCl was still present after injections of methysergide into the LPBN (1.5 +/- 0.8 and 1.7 +/- 1.4 ml/2 h, respectively). The results show that the inhibitory effects of the activation of a,-adrenergic/imidazoline receptors in the forebrain are still present after blockade of the LPBN serotonergic mechanisms and vice versa for the activation of serotonergic mechanisms of the LPBN. Therefore, each system may act independently to inhibit NaCl and water intake. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

Toxocara vitulorum, a parasite of the small intestine of cattle and water buffaloes, is mainly acquired by calves via the colostrum/milk from infected cows. To understand the development of immune responses in calves, antibody levels to a soluble extract antigen (Ex) from T. vitulorum infective larvae were measured by an indirect ELISA with sera of 15 buffalo calves, which were sampled every 15 days for the first 180 days after birth and 9 buffalo cows during the perinatal period. From all serum samples examined during the first 180 days, antibody level was lowest and highest in calves at 1 day of age before and after suckling colostrum, respectively, suggesting that the origin of antibodies was the colostrum. Immediately after birth, antibody levels in suckled calves remained at high levels until day 15, began to decrease to lower levels between 15 and 30 days and remained relatively stable until 120 days. By comparing the immune responses of these animals with their parasitological status it was considered possible to determine if passively acquired or actively produced antibodies provided protection against the infection. High numbers of T. vitulorum eggs in the feces between 30 and 60 days indicated that passively acquired antibodies did not provide protection against the infection, at least during these first days, and the maximum fecal egg counts during 30-45 days were coincident with decreased antibody levels. Between 60 and 120 days, when serum antibodies were detected at reduced, but stable levels, adult nematodes were expelled from the intestines and no more T. vitulorum eggs were found, suggesting development of acquired resistance. However, the potential and functional protective role of the antibodies against T. vitulorum infection and the process of self-cure requires further investigation. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. B.V. In this paper we describe the production of zirconia-based foams by a novel thermostimulated sol-gel route, that employs the foaming of colloidal suspensions prior to the sol-gel transition promoted by small increase of temperature (congruent to3 degreesC). This method produces gelled bodies having porosity >70% in the wet stage, and can be used to produce complex-shaped components. The effect of a foaming agent (Freon11 or CCl3F) and surfactant content on the formation and stability of the foams was analyzed. The rheologic measurements demonstrate that by increasing the surfactant concentration, the gelation time decreases increasing foam stability. As the surfactant concentration and quantity of foaming agent increase, the density decreases and the porosity increases. Hg porosimetry results show that the dry foam presents a bimodal pore size distribution. The family of sub-micrometer pores was attributed to the formation of a microemulsion between Freon11 and water. Scanning electron microscopy analysis shows that the foam structure consists of a three-dimensional network of spherical pores, which may be open and interconnected or closed, at larger or smaller porosities, respectively. Finally these results show that the thermostimulated sol-gel transition provides a potential route for ceramic foam manufacture. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

In this study we investigated the influence of a ventromedial hypothalamus (VMH) lesion with ibotenic acid on water and sodium intake and presser responses induced by combined treatment of the median preoptic nucleus (MnPO) with angiotensin Il (ANG II) and adrenergic agonists (phenylephrine, norepinephrine, isoproterenol and clonidine). Male Holtzman rats with a stainless steel cannula implanted into the MnPO and bilateral sham (vehicle) or VMH lesions with ibotenic acid were used. The ingestion of water and sodium and mean arterial pressure (MAP) were determined in separate groups submitted to sodium depletion with the diuretic furosemide (20 mg/rat). ANG II (10 pmol) injection into the MnPO of sham-lesioned rats induced water and sodium intake and presser responses. VMH-lesion reduced ANG II-induced water intake and increased saline intake, In sham rats phenylephrine (80 nmol) into MnPO increased, whereas norepinephrine (80 nmol) and clonidine (40 nmol) reduced ANG II-induced water intake while sodium intake was reduced only by clonidine into MnPO. In VMH-lesioned rats, phenylephrine reduced, noradrenaline increased and clonidine produced no effect on ANG II-induced water intake. In lesioned rats ANG II-induced sodium intake was reduced by phenylephrine and noradrenaline, whereas clonidine produced no change. ANG II-induced presser response was reduced in VMH-lesioned rats, but the presser response combining ANG II and phenylephrine or noradrenaline in VMH-lesioned rats was bigger than sham rats. These results show that the VMH is important for the changes in water and sodium intake and cardiovascular responses induced by angiotensinergic and adrenergic activation of the MnPO. Four lignin samples were extracted from sugar cane bagasse using four different alcohols (methanol, ethanol, n-propanol, and 1-butanol) via the organosolv-CO2 supercritical pulping process. Langmuir films were characterized by surface pressure vs mean molecular area (Pi-A) isotherms to exploit information at the molecular level carrying out stability tests, cycles of compression/expansion (hysteresis), subphase temperature variations, and metallic ions dissolved into the water subphase at different concentrations. Briefly, it was observed that these lignins are relatively stable on the water surface when compared to those obtained via different extraction processes. Besides, the Pi-A isotherms are shifted to smaller molecular areas at higher subphase temperatures and to larger molecular areas when the metallic ions are dissolved into the subphase. The results are related to the formation of stable aggregates (domains) onto the water subphase by these lignins, as shown in the Pi-A isotherms. It was found as well that the most stable lignin monolayer onto the water subphase is that extracted with 1-butanol. Homogeneous Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of this lignin could be produced as confirmed by UV-vis absorption spectroscopy and the cumulative transfer parameter. In addition, FTIR analysis showed that this lignin LB film is structured in a way that the phenyl groups are organized preferentially parallel to the substrate surface. Further, these LB films were deposited onto gold interdigitated electrodes and ITO and applied in studies involving the detection of Cd+2 ions in aqueous solutions at low concentration levels throughimpedance spectroscopy and electrochemical measurements. FTIR spectroscopy was carried out before and after soaking the thin films into Cd+2 aqueous solutions, revealing a possible physical interaction between the lignin phenyl groups and the heavy metal ions. The importance of using nanostructured systems is demonstrated as well by comparing both LB and cast films.

Objectives. This study compared the residual monomer (RM) in four hard chair-side reline resins (Duraliner II-D, Kooliner-K, Tokuso Rebase Fast-TRF and Ufi Gel hard-UGH) and one heat-polymerized denture base resin (Lucitone 550-L), which was processed using two polymerization cycles (short-LS and long-LL). It was also investigated the effect of two after polymerization treatments on this RM content.Methods. Specimens (n = 18) of each material were produced following the manufacturers' instructions and then divided into three groups. Group I specimens were left untreated (GI-control). Specimens of group II (GII) were given post-polymerization treatment by microwave irradiation. In group III (GIII), specimens were submitted to immersion in water at 55 degrees C (reline resins-10 min; denture base resin L-60min). The RM was analyzed using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and expressed as a percentage of RM. Data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's test (alpha = 0.05).Results. Comparing control specimens, statistical differences were found among all materials (p < 0.05), and the results can be arranged as K (1.52%) > D (0.85%) > UGH (0.45%) > LL (0.24%) > TRF (0.14%) > LS (0.08%). Immersion in hot water (GIII) promoted a significant (p < 0.05) reduction in the RM for all materials evaluated compared to control (GI), with the exception of LL specimens. Materials K, UGH and TRF exhibited significantly (p < 0.05) lower values of RM after microwave irradiation (GII) than in the control specimens.Significance. The reduction in RM promoted by water-bath and microwave post-polymerization treatments could improve the mechanical properties and biocompatibility of the relining and denture base materials. The acid and ultrasound catalyzed hydrolysis of solventless TEOS-water mixtures are studied, as a function of the initial additions of ethanol to the mixtures, by means of flux calorimetry measurements. A device was specially designed for this purpose. Under acid conditions, our proposed method has been able to resolve hydrolysis from other condensation reactions, by detecting the exothermal hydrolysis reaction heat. The process has been explained by a dissolution and reaction mechanism. Ultrasound forces the dissolution process to start the reaction. The alcohol produced in the reaction helps the dissolution process to further enhance the hydrolysis. Initial amounts of pure ethanol added to the mixtures shorten the start time of the reaction, due to an additional effect of dissolution, and diminish the reaction rate, as a result of the solvent dilution effect. Our dissolution and reaction mechanism modeling describes the main points arising from the experimental data and yields k(H) = 0.24 M(-1) min(-1) for the second-order hydrolysis rate constant at 39 degrees C.

The acid hydrolysis under ultrasound stimulation of solventless tetraethoxysilane(TEOS)-water mixtures was studied at 40 degrees C, by means of a heat flux calorimetric method, as a function of the initial water/TEOS molar ratio (r) ranging from 2 to 10. The method is based on the time record of the exothermic heat peak of hydrolysis, arising after an induction time under ultrasound stimulation, which is a measure of the reaction rate. The hydrolysed quantity was found to be approximately independent of the water/TEOS molar ratio, even for r < 4. Polycondensation reaction takes place mainly for low water/TEOS molar ratio in order to supply water to allow almost complete hydrolysis. The overall process of dissolution and hydrolysis has reasonably been described by a previous modelling. The dissolution process of water in TEOS, under ultrasound stimulation and acid conditions, was found to be rather dependent of the alcohol produced in the hydrolysis reaction instead of the initial water quantity present in the mixture.

The surface corrosion process associated with the hydrolysis of fluorozirconate glass, ZBLAN (53ZrF(4), 20BaF(2), 20NaF, 4LaF(2), 3AlF(3)) was investigated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), grazing-incidence small angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS), X-ray reflectivity (XRR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). After a short exposure period (25 min) of the glass surface to deionized water the XPS data indicate an increase of the oxygen content accompanied by a decrease of fluorine concentration. The analysis of the chemical bonding structure identified the predominant surface reaction products as zirconium hydroxyfluoride and oxyfluoride species. The second most abundant glass component, bariumfluoride, remains almost unaffected by oxygen, while sodium fluoride is completely removed from the attacked surface region. The detected structural and compositional changes are related to the selective dissolution of the glass components leading to the formation of a new surface phase. This process is accompanied by a visible surface roughening caused by reprecipitated species, observed by SEM. The modification of the glass surface is responsible for an increase of the GISAXS intensity. The scattering was attributed to nanovoids formed at the surface region of the glass with an average size of 2.4 +/- 0.05 nm. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A simplified dissolution and reaction modeling was employed to study the hydrolysis of heterogeneous tetraethoxysilane (TEOS)-water-HCl mixtures under ultrasound stimulation. The nominal pH was changed from 0.8 to 2.0. The acid specific hydrolysis rate constant was determined as k = 6.1 mol(-1) 1 min(-1) [H+](-1) at 39 degreesC, in good agreement with the literature. Along the heterogeneous step of the reaction, the ultrasound maintains an additional quantity of water under a virtual state of dissolution besides the water dissolved due to the homogenizing effect of the alcohol produced in the reaction. The forced virtually dissolved water is probably represented by water at the TEOS-water interface during the heterogeneous step of the reaction. The mean radius of the heterogeneity represented by water dispersed in TEOS phase, while hydrolysis has not started yet, was evaluated as about 290 A. The HCl concentration accordingly increases the hydrolysis rate constant but its fundamental role on the immiscibility gap of the TEOS-water-ethanol system has not been unequivocally established. The toxic effects of chronic ethanol ingestion were evaluated in male adult rats for 300 days. The animals were divided into three groups: the controls received only tap water as liquid diet; the chronic ethanol ingestion group received only ethanol solution (30%) in semivoluntary research; and the withdrawal group received the same treatment as chronic ethanol-treated rats until 240 days, after which they reverted to drinking water. Chronic ethanol ingestion induced increased lipoperoxide levels and acid phosphatase activities in seminal vesicles. Cu-Zn superoxide dismutase (SOD) decreased from its basal level 70.8 +/- 3.5 to 50.4 +/- 1.6 U/mg protein at 60 days of chronic ethanol ingestion. As changes in GSH-PX activity were observed in rats after chronic ethanol ingestion, while SOD activities were decreased in these animals, it is assumed that superoxide anion elicits lipoperoxide formation and induces cell damage before being converted to hydrogen peroxide by SOD. Ethanol withdrawal induced increased SOD activity and reduced seminar vesicle damage, indicating that the toxic effects were reversible, since increased SOD activity was adequate to scavenge superoxide radical formation. Superoxide radical is an important intermediate in the toxicity of chronic ethanol ingestion. Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier B.V. Ltd

The present experiments were conducted to investigate the role of the alpha (1A)-, alpha (1B), beta (1),- and beta (2)-adrenoceptors of the lateral hypothalamus (LH) on the water and salt intake responses elicited by subfornical organ (SFO) injection of angiotensin II (ANG II) in rats. 5-methylurapidil (an alpha (1A)-adrenergic antagonist), cyclazosin (an alpha (1B)-adrenergic antagonist) and ICI-118,551 (a beta (2)-adrenergic antagonist) injected into the LH produced a dose-dependent reduction, whereas efaroxan (an alpha (2)-antagonist) increased the water intake induced by administration of ANG II into the SFO. These data show that injection of 5-methylurapidil into the LH prior to ANG II into the SFO increased the water and sodium intake induced by the injection of ANG II. The present data also show that atenolol (a beta (1)-adrenergic antagonist), ICI-118,551, cyclazosin, or efaroxan injected into the LH reduced in a dose-dependent manner the water and sodium intake to angiotensinergic activation of SFO. Thus, the alpha (1)- and beta -adrenoceptors of the LH are possibly involved with central mechanisms dependent on ANG II and SFO that control water and sodium intake. (C) 2000 Elsevier B.V. B.V. The kinetics of ultrasound-stimulated and HCl-catalyzed hydrolysis of solventless TEOS-water mixtures was studied as a function of temperature ranging from 10 degrees C up to 65 degrees C by means of flux calorimetry measurements. A specially designed device was utilized for this purpose. The exothermic peak arising few minutes after sonication began has been attributed mainly to the hydrolysis reaction. The overall hydrolysis process, which was measured through the irradiation time up to the hydrolysis peak, was found to be thermally activated, with an apparent activation energy Delta E = 36.4 kJ/mol. The alcohol produced at the early hydrolysis due to sonication seems to further enhance the reaction, via a parallel autocatalytic path, which is controlled by a faster pseudo second order rate constant (k'). Our modeling yielded k' = 6.3 x 10(-2) M(-1) min(-1) at 20 degrees C, which is in a reasonable agreement with the literature, and an activation energy Delta E = 40.4 kJ/mol for the specific process of hydrolysis in presence of alcohol.

The stable oxygen and carbon isotopic composition of caliche in fluvial and supratidal rocks of the Abo Formation (Permian), south-central New Mexico, is controlled by palecoclimate and depositional environment. Fluvial caliche consists of low-Mg calcite nodules and vertically oriented tubules that display stage II texture. Micrite matrix support, brecciation, ooids/pisoliths, aveolar-septal texture, and peloids are common in the fluvial caliche and, along with red color and slickensides in the host shale, indicate pedogenesis in a well-oxidized vadose zone. In contrast, periodic waterlogging of the supratidal paleosols, probably due to high water table, is indicated by drab colors, carbonaceous flecks, horizontal rhizoliths, and the paucity of vadose textures in the stage II caliche nodules.Stable oxygen isotopes are similar in the fluvial and supratidal caliches and range from 21.6 to 30.5 parts per thousand (SMOW). The data exhibit a crude bimodality and delta-O-18 enrichment with a decrease in age (higher in the section). Consideration of these data in the context of delta-temperature relations suggests that 1) surface waters responsible for caliche formation increased in delta-O-18 (from roughly -8 to + 1 parts per thousand) over the 18 m.y. time interval that separated the lowest stratigraphic nodule horizon from the highest, 2) the increasing delta-O-18 values also reflect a warming trend (approximately 15-degrees to nearly 30-degrees-C) in the mean monthly temperature over this same time period, with perhaps an associated increase in Permian ocean temperatures, and 3) the significant variation in delta-O-18 from oldest to youngest caliche was probably enhanced by the amount effect, such that as the temperature increased, the amount of precipitation decreased, resulting in high delta-O-18 values.Caliches in the Abo are enriched in heavy carbon (-7.2 to -1.5 part per thousand PDB) compared to that of soil carbonate derived exclusively from C3 plants (-12 part per thousand PDB), and the supratidal caliches contain somewhat heavier carbon compared to the fluvial caliche. The delta-C-13 values for both environments increase with a decrease in caliche age. These results indicate that as the temperature increased and rainfall decreased with time, the level of C3 plant productivity apparently declined, allowing a greater influx of atmospheric CO2 into the soil. This can only occur when soil respiration rates are quite low or at very shallow depths (less than 10 cm), or both. Atmospheric CO2 seems to have invaded the supratidal soils to a somewhat greater extent than the fluvial soils.

In this study, we investigated the participation of adrenergic neurotransmission in angiotensin II- (ANGII)-induced water intake and urinary electrolyte excretion by means of injection of the alpha(1)-, alpha(2)-, and beta-adrenoceptor antagonists and ANGII into the medial preoptic area (MPOA) in rats. Prazosin (an alpha(1)-adrenergic antagonist) antagonized the water ingestion, Na+, K+ and urine excretion induced by ANGII, whereas yohimbine (an alpha(2)-adrenergic antagonist) enhanced the Na+, K+ and urine excretion induced by ANGII. Propranolol (a nonselective beta-adrenoceptor blocker) antagonized the water ingestion and enhanced the Na+ and urine excretion induced by ANGII. Previous treatment with prazosin reduced the presser responses to ANGII, whereas yohimbine had opposite effects. Previous injection of propranolol produced no effects in the presser responses to ANGII. These results suggest that the adrenergic neurotransmission in the MPOA may actively participate in ANGII-induced dipsogenesis, natriuresis, kaliuresis and diuresis in a process that involves alpha(1)-, alpha(2)-, and beta-adrenoceptors.
